Review: Christmas comes early for fans of Critical output as the label presents a luxurious double 12" various artists EP that bristles with talent from their razor sharp roster. Enei, DRS, Ulterior Motive, Phace, Jubei and label boss Kasra himself all feature on the killer Sequence One EP. Enei opens proceedings with the 24th century slab of future funk that is "Obsession", featuring typically dextrous lyrical assistance from MC DRS, whilst Ulterior Motive plunges you into the dark side with the jagged roller "Divergence". The second slab opens with "Freedom Of Filth" an equally jerky, industrially charged hard stepper whilst "The Rift" sees Kasra and Jubei get their sub bass on with immense consequences.

Review: The latest Critical Music drop pairs the fresh faced with the established, as newcomer Foreign Concept shares twelve inch billing with label boss Kasra. Shotgun calling duties fall on Foreign Concept with the finely sculpted excellence of "Mob Justice" which pairs drums that slap you in the face with sub bass. Flipside and Kasra allows some reverberant melody the space to breath over the tightly wound liquid drum step on "Show You" with the dark splurges of bass matched by the slightly ominous vocals that float around the shadows of the mix.

Review: Critical Music has always operated in its own unique niche within the drum & bass world, and label founder Kasra's own output has been largely responsible for that. This cheeky new 10" is a real heart-wrecher. The drums are sleek and minimal, rubbery and kinetic and make for a seductive groove that is embellished with super soulful vocals from Catching Cairo. On the flip side is a much more dark and deadly stepper: crunchy breaks get you moving and monstrous bass sprays about the mix with real menace. A brilliant two tracker with very different tunes on each side.

Review: A king selector and respected label director first and foremost, Critical bossman Kasra doesn't dish out sonic sermons very often. But when he does, it's always worth paying attention. Especially when Russian demon Enei is on board, too. Five tracks in total, we range from the swampy half time sludge of "Inside The Box" to the early Metalheadz ice and depth plunge breaks of "Words" via the peaktime heads down stepper "Arcana". The real highlight, though, is "Overthinking". Haunted pianos, ghostly breakbeat flickers and paranoid poetry from everyone's favourite MC, DRS, this is up there with "Count To 10". Yeah, it's that good.

Review: 2014 sees Kasra's Critical Music reach its twelfth year of serving up crucial future thinking drum and bass for the heads and the hips, and the label are opening proceedings for a landmark year in requisite fashion. The 19 track Underground Sonics label compilation is out later this month across various formats and features contributions from Noisia, Dub Phizix, Enei, Phace, Sam Binga and Kasra himself. This 12" sampler is a nice vinyl shaped taster for that compilation and long term Critical Music fans will be pleased to see the Kasra and Enei collaboration "Breath" sitting on the A Side, with the track a long time request for release! Down below Emperor drops the pressure with the low riding roller "Control".

Review: Serum and Critical Records boss Kasra join forces for three tracks that see the former's sharp edged sonics and the more atmospheric, experimental textures of the latter working in perfect harmony. 'Noodles' has a serious sci-fi vibe that harks back to the early days of Metalheadz, set to work across a sturdier, more rolling selection of steady, heavy beats. The shuddering bass and choppy rhythms of 'Fade Out' give space for plenty of modular synth action - ultimately a feature of all three tracks here - and affairs are topped off with an attitude=heavy spoken word sample. 'Blaze Heat' has a more hip-hop slanted vibe, slotting in neatly to the wall of drum & bass breakbeats, but again the over-riding focus is some fresh, unheard wigging out in the higher frequencies. Nice work all round, and a personnel combination with a lot to recommend it.

Review: The much revered Critical label reach their 54th release with this heavyweight package. As one of the few drum and bass labels to exercise strict quality control across all formats, they continue to lead by example. With a string of huge tunes under his belt, SPY has become a major player on the scene and he comes correct yet again with "Surface", a darkside roller with lashings of murky bass. Label boss Kasra keeps up the pace on flipside "Control", a deep and dirty number with sparse drums and a purely atmospheric vibe. Strictly for the headz.
