Nuh Chat EP
Cat: CRIT 078. Rel: 21 Jan 15

Drum And Bass
Tek Nah Chat (feat Redders) (3:07)
Elastic (3:16)
Sam Binga & Deft - "Steppin" (feat Redders) (2:45)
Chasic (3:50)
Review: Binga and Redders join forces once again for a unique hybrid of digi-dub, dancehall and D&B. "Tek Nah Chat" is spacey, gritty and primed for the dance as both characters' unique styles complement each other with physical rawness that no other producer/MC combo can boast (with, perhaps, the exception of Phizzy and Strategy) Further on we get all tripped out by the bending toplines and woozy synths of "Elastic", we get pranged out by the late night future grime "Steppin" and get thrusted back to the oldest of schools with the rampant jungle homage "Chasic". Not a dull moment, Binga is in a league of his own right now.

Bad Bish (feat The TT Artist) (2:52)
Reclaim (with Om Unit) (4:10)
Review: Bristol-based basssmith Binga comes correct with his debut long one: a tightly-stitched suite of beats, flavours, cultures and vocalists, it's an immense listen whether you come at this from a jungle perspective, a beats point of view or a straight-up D&B angle: from iced-out instrumental rollers such as "Dark Day" and the chubby-bass ridden "I Tol U" to twisted future dancehall like the title track "Wasted Days" and trippy turbo grime "Badman Skin". Complete with an all-star cast of mic caressers - TT The Artist, Rider Shafique, Warrior Queen and Binga's long-term compadre Redders - this is a heavyweight document that really showcases both Binga's capabilities and the creative potential of future genre smelting. Don't waste any more time.

Greatest Distance (feat Romaine)
Steppin VIP (feat Chimpo/Fox/Redders)
Review: Sam 'Binga' Simpson has always been a keen collaborator. In fact, his debut solo album - released under his previous Baobinga alias back in 2011 - was entitled Joint Ventures, and was entirely made up of co-productions. Wasted Days, the belated follow-up, is similarly minded, with the Bristol-based Hull exile being joined by an impressive roster of guest vocalists - Slick Don, TT The Artist, Rider Shafique and Warrior Queen amongst them - with old pals Om Unit and Chimpo also lending a hand. Impressive as it is, the genius of Wasted Days is in its' unique blend of bass music influences, with Simpson impressively fusing classic jungle, experimental D&B, footwork, ragga, dancehall, grime, IDM, smack-house and dubstep to create thrilling new hybrid workouts.

Greatest Distance (feat Romaine - Ivy Lab remix) (5:41)
AYO (feat Redders - Ivy Lab remix) (4:40)
Review: Ivy Lab get their mucky paws on two of the many highlights from Binga's ever-growing, impossible-to-categorise repertoire. "Greatest Distance" gets murked with trippy glitches and twitches before dropping into a salubrious two-step roll-out. Meanwhile on the flip last year's bash-anthem with Redders gets a deep space subversion with bulbous bass shots and sounds so stretched and twisted they could give the sturdiest minds some serious nightmares.

Review: Linking up for the first time since 'Thoroughbred', kindred spirits Sam Binga and Hyroglifics collide to create their biggest collaborative body of work to date; 'Wicked & Bad'. Not just a kooky title, it truly is loaded to the lips with naughty... The opening system shaker 'Wicked' with long-time compadre Redders, the ice cold electro thrills of 'Wits End', the Riko Dan-front bubbler 'Bad' and the trippy instrumental grime finale 'No Dice' are all primed with the wickedness, and indeed badness, one needs to survive in these nonviable times. Critical in more ways than one.

Review: Continuing to lead from the front after years at the top of its game, the next Critical release is a four track collaborative project which features Mefjus, Enei, Upgrade, Chimpo and TI. It's a seriously heavyweight dance floor ready record primed for maximum destruction. Bou & Upgrade kick things off with 'Creeper' a dark and devastating stepper with menacing vocals from Chimpo. Bou then links with Enei for a taught and bouncy cut with steely drums before Mefjus joins in for the drilling, frazzled synth work of 'Wormhole.' Last of all is the 'Road Runner', another red hot riddim with expertly designed bass.

Soundwaves
Review: A much loved figure across the D&B spectrum, Break brings us his next utterance on none other than Critical Music, who are enjoying their time in the limelight at the moment, following Kasra's recent Fabriclive mix. Here, we see Break doing what he does best in "Here We Go" as he goes in hard and fast, with pounding bass; those unmistakable Break er, breaks; and plenty of fury in the grinding synths which pepper this spectacular release. "Soundwaves", in some ways a slightly less intense cut, pairs a muffled reggae vocal, with almost impenetrable sub bass and low-end frequencies.

Daze Of Our Lives (4:59)
Life Changed (4:50)
Review: We shouldn't need to hype Critical Music up to you too much - the label is a true staple of underground drum & bass after all. Even so, it's exciting to see two powerful forces coming together, and Coco Bryce remains at the top of his game bowling onto this EP for the London imprint with the cheekily titled Nirwana EP. The title track is a delicate, melancholic affair with some smart vocal snippets arranged into an emotive framework before we drop into some outstanding Apache chops. 'Pull Up' meanwhile offers its own distinctive flair with jazzy key licks sprinkled in the breakdown before a coolly dispatched Think break kicks in across the mix. There are ravier synth stabs at work on 'Daze Of Our Lives' and 'Life Changed' lets a little dub slip into the mix, not least thanks to the proper sub line rounding out the bottom end of this typically classy joint with that distinctive Bryce flair about it.

Review: We are real suckers for the work of Dutch producer and drum & bass don Coco Brcye here at Juno HQ. To us, everything he does is gold, and so we're delighted to see him on the influential Critical Music label with a new, grey marbled 12" that packs a punch across his three originals. There is a darkness and menace to opener 'Dial M For Myor' that dissipates and is replaced by hi-tek soul on 'Change Of Heart' with its plunging bass and flurries of snares. 'Daktari' is the deepest and silkiest of the lot, with two remixes bolstering an already cool package.

Double Dipped
Review: London based drum and bass label Critical Music announce their staggering 55th release straight from the studio of SP:MC, Jubei and Dakuan, aka, Code 3, whose contributions to the genre haven't gone unnoticed in recent years. "What You Sayin" opens with simple two-tone chords and staggered break, eventually pounding into fearless snares and thudding subs. Intriguingly subtle at times, smooth keys dive and duck between the heavy drums and thunderous bass lines. The unique combination of the two tempos propel "What You Sayin" into the realm of D&B elegance. Over the page, "Double Dipped" intros with tremendous breaks, spaced out pads and a double bass that's far too easy to get lost in.

Codec (5:26)
Review: Manchester lynchpin Dub Phizix has already had his hand in one of this year's standout tracks in the monstrous Skeptical & Strategy collaboration "Marka" and his debut on the Critical Music imprint has him pitching up with some comparable heat. "Never Been" sees him team up with another regular on the Manchester D&B scene in Fox, and the interplay between the stripped down hyper flex and micro drum edits of the producer and the sick delivery of the vocalist has badness written all over it. Complementing this is the obese sounds of "Codec" with a huge square bass flex pressurising the simple steppah groove to the outer reaches of your attention - super fresh sounds on this one!

Control VIP (5:27)
Mindgames VIP (6:04)
Review: A piquant side-dish to the epic feast that is his debut album Dispositions, Emperor delivers two delicious VIPs that aren't on every format of the LP. "Control VIP" subverts the bassline while our emphasis is still fully squared on the mechanical snare slaps. "Mindgames VIP", meanwhile, is just mental incarnate. An absolute molten lava belter of a track, the levels of distortion on this are just unreal. Obscene.

Review: From the label: Jakarta based Jonathan Kusuma delivers a new EP on Cocktail d'Amore Music. After his European debut on Cosmo Vitelli's I'm A Cliche, followed by a successful EP on Berlin's imprint Love On The Rocks, the Indonesian artist keeps carrying the vessel of the Far East sound. The title track Black Magic is a fat disco-tribal inspired groove that builds fast, eventually climaxing with a cloud of acid synths and mystical vocals. Japanese duo Mascaras, Chida and Cos/Mes' 5ive, straighten up the groove giving a 4/4 beats restyling. The result is a Proto-Techno, Trance influenced soundscape, for foggy late-night dancefloors. Urban Sorcery is an Italo inspired maze of proto-acid synthesizers, sounding like an enchanted concrete-covered forest. 90's house inspired Redvox is an experiment of cosmic influences. As the vocal becomes part of the groove, the long pads fuel this spaceship pushing it to the borders of time and space.

Passed Up (5:21)
SMPL (5:38)
Mind Games (6:00)
Review: Yorkshire's darkest D&B talent Emperor steps up with yet another forthright slab or triple-track grit. "Passed Up" has a bass presence that's near-overwhelming thanks its bulbous drone that refuses to quit. "SMPL" strips things back and looks more towards the late 90s Ed Rush & Optical style techstyle - loopy with real mechanical bite, it's a surgical shamanistic heads down affair. Finally "Mind Games"; a ruthless bass ripper that's almost jump up in its attitude, you can't help but think of Ram Trilogy at their finest when this pops off. With potential to unite all sub genres and sides of the D&B dance, Emperor has well and truly smashed it here.

Review: One of D&B's most exciting prospects, Emperor steps up to Kasra's revered Critical with his first full EP. Known for his devastatingly fiery brand of drum & bass, here he playfully flips the switch with two much deeper, soulful cuts. "Begin" is a complex breathy beast; all dreamy and glitchy. Imagine Lamb produced by Calyx & TeeBee. All we need to say about "She Said" is this: "Brown Paper Bag" flavoured double bassline. Only funkier. Oh yes.

Emperor - "Precursor" (Mefjus remix)
Review: Hello! Two of drum & bass's most talented young individuals Emperor and Mefjus collide for two firing collaborative originals and two remixes of each other's work. As you'd expect, each one of them kicks like a mule on heat. "Disrupted" knocks from the left-side in a truly unique fashion thanks to its off-beat rhythm and jarred guttural bass while "Void Man Void" goes for that furry little jugular of yours with walloping bass and an array of neuro textures. Meanwhile on the remix tip, Emperor adds an added sense of tear-out grit to Mefjus's "Signal" while Mefjus injects a little more space and spooked out drama to Emperor's "Precursor". Truly outstanding.

Review: Neurofunk was always an enviable art, but for far too long it remained in the strict purview of artists deserting pop drum n' bass - and in turn trying to prove who was the cleverest sound designer on the scene. En Vy's new EP for Critical Music signals we've had an attitude change; this is 'neurofunk' that approaches the sound from a much more measured stance, swapping out all the crazed sound design turns and out-of-place Reese womps for more meditative and critical musicianship. The EP shows off a good ear for subgenre knowhow; 'UFO' has a jump-up feel to it that is nonetheless nicely skippy and pure, while 'Beautiful Dreamer' is by far the standout - with dreamy vocals compelling a tonal lead rhythm to produce an overall sub-heavy dream-vibe.

Review: Not seen since his debut album Machines was released on Critical in late 2012, St Petersburg's best Drum and Bass exponent Enei resurfaces in double plated fashion with the Liberation EP. Despite the absence, Aleksei Egorchenkov is on fine form for Critical here, experimenting with new tempos and new collaborators without any hint of sacrificing his skills for raw, next level drum and bass. Fellow Critical producer Emperor, Mancunian vocalist and producer Chimpo and singer songwriter Sam Wills feature across the two slabs of wax, with the tempo shifting "Headtop" featuring Chimpo a standout track.

Cracker (feat Eastcolors & Noel - Jubei remix)
Review: Kasra's Critical Audio is once again the showcase for the distinct production talents of Russia's Enei, serving up Stonehead, a four track selection presented across this heavy weight double 12 pack. All the hallmarks of an Enei arrangement are here, as the title track sets the mood with rigid click clacking rhythms dextrously rippling over beams of aggressive dark side bass. This sense of aggravation is matched by the vocal sample that literally barks at you. "No Fear" operates on a similar level, Riya's vocal contribution aligned with the tight stepping syncopation. Those seeking some sort of classic drum and bass solace will find respite in the amen heavy tear out sensation of "Moving Fast" and Jubei's rattling refix of "Cracker".

Review: Russia's D&B golden boy Enei hasn't released a bunk tune since he first emerged on Fokuz and Subway almost five years ago. So let's face it; he's not about to change this habit on his debut solo album. Yup, Machines is every bit - and club ready - as you'd expect it to be. Immersive bass depths laced with industrial force and just the right balance between clinical mastery and raw soul, it's Enei at his least bunk ever. Highlights include the hymnal dark bouncer "The Moment" (with DRS), the Reinforced-meets-"Up All Night" flavours of "Elephant" and the stark minimal theory of "Trainchaser".

Review: Russian D&B mastermind Enei is about to deliver his second album Rituals and if this sampler is anything to go by, we're in for a treat of industrial strength proportions. "Just One Look" shows Enei's more sentimental, emotional side as Charli adds a sense of soul that he's usually kept at arms distance in the past but we'll hopefully hear more of in the future. "Bad Proof" is more like the mechanical hell-raiser we first saw enter the game in 2008 - neuro-edged and heavier than a coachload of 80s darts players, Enei is on banging form and his album should be a next level deal.

Review: Russian D&B supremo Enei returns with his first full EP since his epic debut album Machines in late 2012. As you'd expect, it's yet another masterclass in solid rhythm and industrial strength sound design. "Goliath" opens the ceremony with a distinctive sermon from MC-du-jour DRS. As the title suggests, it's majestically monolithic. Further in we're bombarded with demonstrative dynamics; the techno-like loopiness of "Hotplate", the dramatic, rim-shot-striking tantalisation on "The Artefact" and the slimy, sludgy half-time twists on "Prometheus". Will Enei ever make a bad record? We somehow doubt it. Get to know.

Review: Rituals was a game changer LP for Enei. A chance to showcase a wickedly wide side to his repertoire, few knew how soulful the man behind some of the heaviest Russian tech D&B in recent times could be. Critical have ensured the quality is respected with three precision remixes; Break adds his relaxed, loose-groove charm to the goosebumping "Homeworld", Signal takes the sensuous roller "Just One Look" 20,000 leagues under the sea with pneumatic drums and textured vocals while Fre4knc irons out the gritty creases on the still-thunderous "Iron Curtain" for a well-oiled mechanical funk session. Three serious remixes and a nice reminder to listen to the album again.

Review: First there was Machines, then there was Rituals, now comes Enei's third album Humans and it's quite possibly his best and most accomplished one so far. Flexing from all-out rave fire ('No Man', 'Acid Shot') to slinky heads-down bubblers ('Move In Silence') to purring soulful vibes ('Show Me') to percussive hypnosis hurters ('Falling') and back again via massive grizzly dancefloor blow-outs ('Calm'), the London-based Russian maverick has delivered a serious trip that keeps things 100% dancefloor, fully heavyweight, fully DJ friendly but totally sick to listen to as an album experience. Nine thumbs up.

Danger Dance
Review: Not content with scooping up all the plaudits for Rockwell's recent killer Aria double twelve - you heard the Untold collab right? - Critical Sounds go East and go hard with this brutal tech step collab between Estonia's Enei and Russian's Noel and Eastcolours. "Cracker" twists screaming sub bass around crisp metallic syncopation and rolling snares that crash around brilliantly. On the flip Enei goes solo on the clipped digital half step of "Danger Dance" that demonstrates a schizophrenic understanding of beat programming that's reminiscent of Bricolage era Amon Tobin married with the contemporary sonic aesthetics of the aforementioned Jack Dunning.

Enei & MC DRS - "Obsession"
Ulterior Motive - "Divergence"
Phace - "Freedom Of Filth"
Jubei & Kasra - "The Rift"
Review: Christmas comes early for fans of Critical output as the label presents a luxurious double 12" various artists EP that bristles with talent from their razor sharp roster. Enei, DRS, Ulterior Motive, Phace, Jubei and label boss Kasra himself all feature on the killer Sequence One EP. Enei opens proceedings with the 24th century slab of future funk that is "Obsession", featuring typically dextrous lyrical assistance from MC DRS, whilst Ulterior Motive plunges you into the dark side with the jagged roller "Divergence". The second slab opens with "Freedom Of Filth" an equally jerky, industrially charged hard stepper whilst "The Rift" sees Kasra and Jubei get their sub bass on with immense consequences.

Bang It (with Stray)
Review: The Tag Team EP represents a killer return to Critical for South Coast producer Foreign Concept who really showcases the depths of his productions skills across the four tracks. As you'd expect from the EP title, this release is all about Foreign Concept flexing his collaborative muscles and he doesn't put a step wrong. Naturally there's some hi rolling drum and bass with the T Man featuring lead track and "Bang It" featuring Stray both premium grade examples of the art, but Foreign Concept demonstrates he can take the D&B template and apply it to hip hop on "Paper Cha$er" which is made all the memorable by the guest spot from New York MC Punchline of eMC fame.

Foreign Concept - "Mob Justice"
Foreign Concept & Kasra - "Show You"
Review: The latest Critical Music drop pairs the fresh faced with the established, as newcomer Foreign Concept shares twelve inch billing with label boss Kasra. Shotgun calling duties fall on Foreign Concept with the finely sculpted excellence of "Mob Justice" which pairs drums that slap you in the face with sub bass. Flipside and Kasra allows some reverberant melody the space to breath over the tightly wound liquid drum step on "Show You" with the dark splurges of bass matched by the slightly ominous vocals that float around the shadows of the mix.

Foreign Concept & Klax - "Ask Yourself"
Review: Easily Foreign Concept's biggest - and most anticipated - release to date, early versions and dubs have been spotted in mixes from Kasra and Stray for well over six months. Covering all the most exciting areas of D&B, each track tells its own story... "Make Meals" is a low-riding, sleazy hip-hop jam, "When You're Alone" is a startling ice cannon of a track, "Endless Fade" is a rich, string-drenched soulful roller while his collab with dubster Klax takes us deep into slippery, funky, spacey Exit territory. Tuck in, this meal is beyond tasty!
