Burning Memories EP
Cat: COLDR 004. Rel: 01 Apr 14
Bass
  1. Burning Memories
  2. Switchblade
  3. Trace Loops
  4. Northern Shadows
Review: Although it only has three releases behind it, Pinch's Cold Recordings, started last year as an "an outlet for new movements in the ever evolving UK hardcore continuum" has already given us some essential forward-thinking bass music from Elmono, Ipman and Batu. The label's fourth release, comes from Acre, a producer who put out an EP of killer grime fusions on Visionist's Lost Codes label last year, and is perhaps Cold's best release to date. The Burning Memories EP features four tracks which see Acre delve ever deeper into his singularly murky sound; the title track combines grime and jungle with slow, brooding techno coming in somewhere between the sounds of Mumdance and Beneath, while "Switchblade" is dominated by a heavy bass blast and crackling electric leads. "Trace Loops" is the most experimental track of all, combining morse code bleeps with a ghostly rhythm that sounds like zombified dubstep, while "Northern Shadows" takes things into peak time territory with a barrage of kicks and subs that are designed to demolish the floor. Big, big record from Acre here.

  2. Bangers (4:07)
  3. Quite (5:18)
  4. Flat Football (4:20)
Review: Charlie "Kasket" Baldwin returns to Pinch's formidable Cold Recordings stable, an imprint focused on "new movements in the ever-evolving UK hardcore continuum". For his second salvo for the label, Baldwin serves up four floor-friendly cuts, beginning with the off0kilter drum rhythms, savagely chopped hip-hop vocal samples and trippy stabs of "Lemons". Those searching for heavy sub-bass action should start with the pulverizing low end and polyrhythmic punch of "Bangers", before flipping the disc and dropping the needle on "Quite", a hot-stepping affair that draws influence from both dubstep and UK garage without particularly sounding like either. Further mind-altering insanity can be found on closer "Flat Football", a wild and entertaining mixture of scattergun drum hits and wayward electronics.

  3. Salad Holder (4:24)
  4. The 4th Wall (5:26)
Review: Pinch's vinyl-only Cold imprint has been serving some serious pounders since its first release back in 2013, and the music has always come from new and exciting talent, both in and out of the Bristol area. It's Elmono this time, and the artist is back after his debut on the label back three years ago. "Welcome To The Octagon" is what you would call a straight-laced techno cut, all tidy kicks, perfectly processed percussion, and a web of high-tech sonics. On the other hand, "Alpha Blob" is broken and stuttering, but still clean and masterfully executed, with the same going for the beautifully pale-faced "Salad Holder", and it's only until we get to "The 4th Wall" that the nastiness starts to spew out in the form of subtle acid. Killers.

Review: It's been a break out year for Jack 'Ipman' Gibbons who has put his name to a raft of killer transmissions either alongside regular collaborator Killawat or solo - with the recent Jigsaw Dub on Lion Charge a personal favourite here at Juno HQ. Arriving on Pinch's techno focused Cold Recordings with Ventricle, this double drop is probably Ipman's most illustrious release thus far and it's pretty impressive. Much like prior Cold transmissions from Batu and Elmomo, both "Ventricle" and "Decomposer" roll deep into the dark side of bass indebted techno and it will be interesting to see what Ipman has up his sleeve next year.

  4. Simple City (5:57)
Review: Welsh producer Kinzy has had some dalliances with releases for Under 5's in the past, but now the producer really comes of age with this release for Pinch's Cold Recordings imprint. It sounds very much at home on the label, reveling in icy atmospheres loaded with tension and crafty sound design. There's some righteous half-step intensity in the shape of "Simple City", dread-filled house twitch on "Pressure" and oddball trap manglings aplenty on "3Style". If you crave more of that chilly fix that Cold is focused on, then this is another essential addition to your beyond-the-grave arsenal.

Down (12")

  1. Down
  2. Search Party
Review: Tectonic bossman Pinch has whittled his forward-thinking stick to a point so hard it could poke the eye out of an unaware London pedestrian all the way from Bristol base. "Down" is a perfect example of how ahead of the game Pinch is and is plucked from his forthcoming genre smelting mix CD of the year contender with Mumdance. It's a lesson in sludgy, early-Warp style techno that's droning and paranoid, twisting his immersive signature into an entirely new context. Flip for "Search Party", a groove that shuffles and shakes on a fractious broken beat while an array of well-tamed wobbles twist and tease each other. Long may Pinch keep whittling...

Cat: COLDR 009. Rel: 31 May 17
Bass
  1. Water Bomb (5:08)
  2. Cold New Worlds (4:12)
Review: Having spent much of the last few years working with one of his idols, On U-Sound legend Adrian Sherwood, Rob 'Pinch' Ellis returns with a first solo single since January 2016. "Water Bomb" is a suitably bombastic affair, with Ellis creating a heavyweight rhythm out of manipulated recordings of running and splashing water. This is then combined with a typically heavy, thrusting bassline to create an intoxicating, futurist dubstep roller. Flip for "Cold New Worlds", where the tall Bristolian offers an altogether icier voyage into Autechre-influenced post-dubstep pastures. While suitably heavy and club-ready, it's also rather poignant.

  1. Atmospheric Entry (4:05)
  2. Bile (6:24)
  3. Prometheus (5:47)
  4. Fire, Walk With Me (4:56)
Review: Aside from the one Pinch 12", Cold Recordings has largely operated as a platform for the Tectonic boss to promote a new breed of bass fusionist talent; Elmono, Batu, Acre and Ipman have all had early releases on the label. This latest Cold 12" is quite the proposition, introducing the unheralded Latvian talent W3C, whose four-track single, Atmospheric Entry, is the equivalent of an aural slap to the chops. W3C engages us with a deadly quartet of cuts that see industrial techno meet rolling UK-style broken rhythms - how this sounds on a decent soundsystem is something we will be investigating this weekend. If you are a fan of Mumdance and Logos you need to get on this.
