CCCP Edits Schallplatten & CDs

Review: We were rather impressed by the first volume in the CCCP Edits series, a re-edit imprint seemingly dedicated to offering up reworks of obscure, largely unknown musical gems from Soviet-era Russia, so hopes are sky-high for this second instalment. We shouldn't have worried. Opener "Nochi" is a deep, woozy and off-kilter chunk of two-step garage/jazz-funk fusion, while "Ne Mojet Bit" is the most Balearic electro track we've heard in yonks. The fun continues on the flip, where the glassy-eyed deep pop-goes-two-step flex of "T=H2O" comes accompanied with the hip-house era breakbeat-house warmth (and jazzy keys) of standout track "Hare, Krishna".

Review: The long lost electronic sounds of Soviet-era Russia is what this young but already vital new label focusses on with its edits. The first few volumes have serve up some real treats and volume four is no such, either. 'Strana Nepuganykh' is a blissful post-rave sound with nice floaty breakbeats and pensive chords running throughout the mix. 'Poceluy' is more direct, with old school stabs and a busier, funkier break overlaid by some nice jazzy chords. There is a celestial charm to the bright white chords of 'Poi!' and then things get a little deeper on 'Ovosl Eendelsop,' which sounds like 90s Roni Size doing house music.

Over the last few years, we've heard plenty of reworks of obscure, Cold War-era cuts from Eastern Europe, though few from the then Soviet Union. The shadowy CCCP Edits series, which here makes its bow, promises to set the record straight. There's plenty to set the pulse racing, from the bubbly acid bass, bustling funk breaks and hip-house breaks of "Malodym" and "Ya Zdes" (the latter with added deep house drowsiness and Balearic intent), to the spoken male vocals, high-tempo electro beats and lo-fi guitars of "Knopochki". Best of all though is closing cut "Astrid", which isn't really Russian at all, but rather an extra-percussive, bass heavy samba-house rework of an old Astrud Gilberto track. We'll forgive them though as it's really rather good.

Review: The CCCP Edits label keeps on rolling out the jams and now we get a second offering of them in just a couple of months. The in-house team tackles a wide remit of sounds and adds their own spin - here we start with the kaleidoscopic colours of 'Sahar-Pesok' with its icy electro rhythms and serene sense of synth craft. 'Engineer Pohoj' is a darker bit of cyborg funk to jack the floor and 'Football' then flips the script with some big disco samples over broken beat rhythms that bring fun and originality in equal measure. 'V Shapke Profilja' closes out with some wonky bass and lush neon synth work for 5 am cruising.

Review: It's five up for the CCCP Edits label which deals in serving up nicely reworked jams from house and disco's past. The eponymous and mysterious production team is in fine form here with four more cuts out of Russia that all have Cyrillic names but have been transliterated for English audiences which means '??? ???? ????' becomes 'Moi Drug Tima'. It's a funky cut with house and disco elements over a punchy break. 'Ektoplazma' is rugged electro that races through the stars and 'BBC' is a heavyweight tech-house stomper. 'Choovak' closes with more rough-edged grooves.
