Review: Mitchel Van Dither has been synonymous with the Kindred Spirits label up until now, an imprint that we have just so much time and respect for. He has, however, been branching out as of late, and his adventures have landed him a spot on Flying Lotus' mighty Brainfeeder. Two EP's containing tunes from Fool have already been released on the label, but the album format expresses their depth much more clearly, and with more freedom. Objectively, Fool is Brainfeeder through and through, a little work of art to fit in perfectly with the rest of this ever-surprising and always on-point catalogue. Recommended.

Review: Lo-fi house hero Ross From Friends presents his debut album for Flying Lotus' Brainfeeder imprint - this follows up the terrific Aphelion EP he presented on the label earlier this year. Like the title suggests, Family Portrait refers to a very specific personal aspect of Felix Weatherall's life: the influence of his parents. Dance music was always around during his childhood, where he grew up learning about music from his dad - who apparently had a penchant for banging out hi-NRG tracks on the decks. It's a riveting listen from start to finish: from the the intensely vivid groove of "Pale Blue Dot" to the moody "Project Cybersyn" with its tunnelling aesthetic - perfectly geared for those heads-down moments later in the night.

Review: LA beat scene veteran Mtendere Mandowa looks to a fresh set of talented collaborators (including Panda Bear, MNDSGN, Thomas Stankiewicz) on his new album for Brainfeeder. It is his first for five years and the results are superb. The 14 original tracks across the album constantly evolve and flourish. Opener "Atoms Song" is built around a loopy keyboard that's joined by drifting synths that wash over you like a warm shower, Shufflin' beast "Daughter Callin'" is something that Dilla would be happy to put his name to and album highlight, Sudan Archives hook-up "Black Dove" is an emotive, georgeously moving number, all at once proving Teebs' ability to integrate dynamic talents seamlessly into his own sonic realm. Warm and organic, "Anicca" is an essential piece of work.

Review: Thundercat's last album, 2017's "Drunk", is undeniably one of the greatest full-lengths of the past few years - a dizzyingly varied and mind-altering affair that mixed and matched styles to create thrilling new fusions of past and present sounds. He's at it again on this delayed follow-up "It Is What It Is", which was co-produced by Flying Lotus and includes an impressive cast-list of guests and collaborators (think Kamasi Washington, Ty Dolla Sign, Steve Arrington, BADBADNOTGOOD, Lil B and Louis Cole for starters). Musically it's impossible to pigeonhole - think rubbery 80s funk meets spiritual jazz meets reggae meets hip-hop meets experimental beats meets... you get the idea - and that makes for inspiring listening. Whether it's quite as good as "Drunk" is debatable, but it's certainly superb.

Review: Anniversary compilations tend to fall into one of two camps, with labels either offering up a straight retrospective or a collection of previously unheard material. "Brainfeeder X", the tenth anniversary set from Flying Lotus' eclectic and experimental imprint, delivers the best of both worlds. Disc one tells the story so far, joining the dots between ambient, jazz, instrumental hip-hop, distorted techno and wonky house via cuts by the likes of Martyn, Daedelus, Taylor McFerrin, Thundercat and DJ Paypal. Disc two, meanwhile, showcases exclusive, unheard material, with highlights including the dream-time soul of Thundercat and BADBADNOTGOOD's "King of the Hill", the sunrise-ready deep house of Ross From Friends, the madcap IDM rush of Dorian Concept and the high-octane jazz-rap madness of Flying Lotus and Busdriver's "Ain't No Coming Back".

Review: "Don't Let You Down" sees the combination of John Tejada and Reggie Watts work serious magic within the framework of house, techno and electronica. Combining the former's acclaimed history of West Coast US tech, with the latter's soulful, smooth and sexy approach to vocals, it's a hybrid collection of tracks that celebrates the wildly referential nature of club sounds. First effort "Renegades", for example, is a warm US house groove. Then "Little Man" takes us down an alleyway of broken sleaze, nodding to the likes of Detroit Grand Pubahs. "Tonight" reprises the hands-in-air vibes of the opener, while "138" brings in a gospel feel. These contrasts are rarely more pronounced than when we hear the jerky rhythm and spoken word of "Depth Has A Focus" next to the propellant "Another Sun".

Review: Already out in the ether since the summer, Kamasi's sprawling three-part jazz opus finally sees the light of vinyl day. Presented on heavyweight vinyl with his striking signature artwork, its delivery befits the album's rave reviews on its original arrival. Highlights, in case you haven't heard it yet, are the awe-inspiring switch from fusion to swing on "The Next Step" the album's overall sparing inclusion of vocal that make "The Rhythm Changes" really stand out and sparkle and the attention to detail on the narrative structure on reprise notes such as "Re Run Home". A must-have for any jazz/Brainfeeder fan.
