Review: Longstanding New York troupe El Michels Affair bite down on 2017 with two on-point left-sided soul jams. "Tearz" is a biggie, not least because it features Lee Fields and The Shacks. A warm, organ groove with loose breaks and drops into pure harmonic bliss, it's another spellbinding affair from the Wu-approved crew. "Verbal Intercourse" takes more of a slinkier, subtle approach with clipped horns spitting an insistent hook over sparse, twanging instrumental elements. Stunning, as always.

The A side "Reasons" is a collaboration with Bobby Oroza that follows on from their last well received work together in fine style. The results is a deep and existential trip with lush guitar notes and Oroza's voice musing on the struggles of life. "Hipps" is pulled from El Michels Affair's aforementioned album Adult Themes and has a crushing beat and standout horn arrangements that have made the leader of this band so well acclaimed.

Review: Masterful soul instrumentalists El Michels Affair return to home label Big Crown with some worldly infused sounds on this tasty new 7". "Dhuaan" (feat Piya Malik) is the opener and brings plenty of psyched-out Turkish vibes and snaking synths, crashing drum hits and intoxicating break downs. The whole thing makes for a fascinating ride. "Sha Na Na" (feat The Shacks) then takes a more deep and mysterious route, with organ chords bending and warping as if heat damaged, while super silky drum playing oils the groove.

Review: Leon Michels's El Michels Affair band spearheaded and instrumental funk movement when it emerged 15 year ago and now their famous cinematic soul sound gives rise to another gorgeous album of golden sounds on Big Crown. Swirling moods and romantic vibes, plaintive piano playing and sombre horns all add to a rich tapestry of sound that ebbs and flows through moments of passion, lust and love. Form the more densely orchestrated "Rubix" and "Villa" via "Life of Pablo", which features a debut from Leon's son, there's subtle narrative tot he album which keeps you locked through harder drum grooves on "Hipps" and sophisticated soothers like "Kill the Lights."

Review: Interestingly, the roots of the latest El Michels Affair lie in a 2017 collection of cinematic soul interludes he created as a kind of showreel-for-sampling. As that was a successful exercise - some of the minute-long tracks became the basis of songs Beyonce & Jay-Z and Travis Scott, amongst others - Michels decided to gather together his band-mates and create an imaginary 1960s movie soundtrack along the same lines, or as he puts it, "a kind of musical Choose Your Own Adventure". Combining loose, languid and lazy soul grooves with atmospheric orchestration, eyes-closed female vocals, jazz style arrangements and quirky instrumental choices, "Adult Themes" is a hugely evocative, atmospheric and entertaining affair that contains numerous subtle nods to Harold Budd, David Axelrod and Francous de Robaix.

First up GZA's "Shadow Boxing" gets a hazy Booker T-style shakedown with those dreamy hammonds breezing through like top-down caddies. FlipGhostface Killah's "Iron Maiden" gets the swooning, woozy treatment with a breakdown that flips like a wild dream. No one does Wu covers like Leon Michels' troupe.

Review: Leon Michel's El Michels Affair has always grabbed our attention, since the very early days of the Juno website, back in the early 00s. The New York outfit, an instrumental collective that seems to change every decade, have been experimenting with jazz and all sorts of ethereal styles from across the globe. This new single, out through the trusted Big Crown label, is perhaps one of their most memorable outings of the last 5 years. The title track, "Unathi", is a mystical voyage across time and space, with psyched-out vocals riding high above a solid trip-hop groove and a marvelous array of trippy atmospherics. On the flip, "Zaharila" is a slower, moodier piece that speaks to the heart, spewing horns and tough beats from every angle, making it instantly recognizable and, yes, as seductive as most of El Michels Affair's music. Excellent.

Review: .El Michels Affair is nothing if not prolific. Fortunately, the band leader, composer and musician is also hella talented. This is one of his most famous and iconic albums in a discography that is full of them, not least because of course it tackles some of the most iconic source material in hip-hop, namely Wu-Tang Clan's seminal Enter The 37th Chamber. He flips it into an instrumental tribute to the world of the great band and no matter what format it appears in, it plays sells out. Review: Bobby Ozra was on tour back in 2019 and the final date was in New York City. He had some time before returning home to Finland so hooked up with El Michel's Affair and Diamond Mine to record some music. The pair hit it off immediately, and Bobby used the chance to write about more esoteric subjects with the pair soon deciding to work on a full length album together. They are now well on with that process but in the meantime offer up two new gems. 'Losing It' is sun in Spanish and English and is a dramatic and moving tune while 'Watcha Know' explores death with some philosophical ponderings.
