Review: Genuine honesty is pretty rare in music today - even when artists claim to bare their soul it's often calculated. For Brian Christinzio, AKA BC Camplight, though, nothing could be further from the truth. His work is aurally exploratory and adventurous, and he makes no secret of real feelings, even if those feelings risk making the audience feel a little uncomfortable. Take the intro to 'Ghosthunting' here - the man in question delivers a pseudo-standup route discussing his mental health issues. It makes how enjoyable the track is, and the album overall, somewhat jarring. This is clearly a work of some personal struggle. Nevertheless, enjoy we must as it's pretty near perfect. Beautiful electronica, dark synth wave stuff, and commanding, No.1-friendly pop with real bite. Overlook at your peril.

Review: When Charlatans frontman Tim Burgess dropped 'Empathy For The Devil' back in February it burst onto playlists like the scorching sunshine it sounds like. A jaunty, carefree slice of summer pop, complete with proclamations of "What will be will be", it marked the return of a Britpop hero who is one of the era's most talented, likeable and consistent - his work after those heady days has remained highly original and varied. Those looking for more of the same on this, his fourth solo album, will be pleased to know it's hardly lacking in good vibes. 'Sweetheart Mercury' follows the aforementioned single and album opener, and it's equally sublime and bouncy. In fact, anyone looking for something subdued must wait for 'Undertow' and its piano and vocal build, which is still a track of strength rather than vulnerability. Packing a powerful punch while never failing to explore new ideas, it's exquisite, timeless and essential.

Review: It's hard not to see this offering from hallucinogenic and highly visual psych-rockers The Flaming Lips as a "here's what you could have won" release. And that's "here's what you could have won had you been able to attend this performance of one of our most treasured albums in one of the world's most aesthetically astounding venues". FOMO abounds, Red Rocks Amphitheatre is a proper bucket list muso haunt, setting gigs halfway up a Colorado mountain. Throw in live orchestra, the Colorado Symphony, and you've got yourself a truly life-affirming evening. Even on record, there's a tangible difference between the sonics here and the original, still it's an incredibly beautiful and grand album. Perhaps most pronounced during the heart-rendering string sweep of opener "Race For The Prize" (expect shivers), tracks such as "A Spoonful Weighs A Ton" and, of course, "Waitin' For A Superman" feel as though they have finally found their home.

Review: Maria Linden and Fredrik Balck present 12 tracks under the I Break Horses moniker, and it couldn't sound much sweeter. Or at least that's true for 50% of what's here (roughly). At the risk of sounding cliched, this is pop with one ear on the dark side, and another on the light. There's redemption and desperation, the Swedish siren's whispered vocal style perfectly suited to either feeling, combined with spectacularly polished instrumentation to render the whole thing a vivid picture of human emotion. Openers 'Turn' and 'Silence' are pretty, delicate little things, but we also have the likes of 'I a r m' - an otherworldly tune up - and 'I'll Be The Death of You', which owes plenty to synth and new wave. Then you get the pared back, pitched down and rather reflective 'I Live At Night' and the spiralling chords and stop you dead atmospherics of 'Death Engine'.

Review: If you've ever seen the "South Park" episode, "Two Days Before The Day After Tomorrow", spare a thought for Lanterns On The Lake. The outfit have been in hiatus over the last four years, returning to studio and release schedule in a world increasingly hellbent on a worrying course. Their earlier work offered warnings of impending fallout from towns that time forgot, among other omens. Those chickens have come home to roost in reality, and the vocal cries of Hazel Wilde don't ignore this. Opening number "When It All Comes True" is proof enough of this. Nevertheless, this latest expands the horizon, still dealing with big problems only different ones. Isolation, dependency and - looming largest of all - a world set ablaze by its own people. All wrapped up in shimmering, soaring, cinematic instrumentation - here more intimately realised than ever - the picture painted is a lovely sort of doom.

Review: The credits alone should make it clear where this one is coming from. Recorded over the course of six days in a Nashville studio, with Wilco's Pat Sansone on production and sessions musicians called in for services in pedal steel, bass and fiddle (the latter by hero of the instrument, Mark O'Connor), 'Dixie Blur' sees Jonathan Wilson add to an already burgeoning back catalogue of work something for the timeless folk and Americana section of your collection.

And he does this very well indeed. A reflective outing that deals with some relatively standard themes, albeit poignant nonetheless - youth, love, friendship and the loss of any or all of those things - this is a case in point for the power of paring things back and allowing what elements are there to fully shine.

Review: With a line-up that boasts Cabaret Voltaire's Stephen Mallinder, you know that Wrangler have got the chops when it comes to deviant electronics with experimental grit and synth-pop nous in equal measure. On their latest album they sound more vital than ever, skirting around a fizzing array of grooves where the human voices and synths speak with equal flair and personality. Craftily sculpted and joyously composed, this is a delightfully modernist twist on the blueprint Cabs helped define all those decades ago. The spirit of progress is alive and well across this beautifully bonkers record - all disco delinquents take note!
