This one is another case in point as it finds music historian, DJ and daytime party promoter John Armstrong - who has put together more than 200 compilations - digging deep to offer up an alternate take on the famous bubblegum sounds that came out of Black South Africa towards the end of the apartheid years. Yebo! Rare Mzansi Party Beats from Apartheid's Dying Years is a superb showcase of diverse sounds created by the youth of the day as a means of escape. There is already talk of a second volume, which we're very much ready for after hearing this one.

Review: To conclude their must-have series of reissues of disco-era albums by NYC-based Ghanain Sidiku Buari, BBE Music offers up a freshly re-mastered edition of 1979's "Revolution (Live Disco Show In New York City)". Whether or not the first four tracks were genuinely recorded at a "disco show" - even BBE doesn't know for sure - they certainly sound like straight-to-tape performances that brilliantly mix and match elements of Afrobeat, Juju, disco and heavy funk. The second half of the set was definitely recorded in a studio and includes cuts either closer in style to Ghanaian popular music of the period ("Revolution") or that fuse Buaki's usual sound with different influences (see the clear reggae influences of "Together We Can Rebuild It (Ghana Motherland)" and the quirky "Merry Xmas & Happy New Year").

Review: BBE wrap up their four part reissue series of Sidiku Buari's unique and in demand body of African Disco albums with final instalment, Revolution (Live Disco Show In New York City). It is thought that disc one here is a fully live recording from 1979 complete with bells, whistles, molten Moogs, bass heavy rhythms and plenty of party starting lyrics. On the second disc are four tracks that vary in style from cosmic disco to afro and include perennial crowd-pleasers Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. This has been a refreshing series and it is now completed in style.

Review: Recorded in 1983 and '84 respectively, "Feelings" and "Sidiku Buari & His Jam Busters" were the last albums recorded by Sidiku Buari, a New York based musician who turned to music after a promising career as an athlete in his native Ghana. He initially rose to prominence making highlife and afro-disco, but by the early '80s Sidiku was in full-on Afro-boogie and electrofunk mode, offering up tracks rich in colourful synthesizer lines, punchy electronic drums and righteous vocals in his native tongue. There's much to set the pulse racing across both slabs of wax, from the squelchy, club-ready brilliance of "Music" and "Anokwar (Truth)", to the slap bass propelled flex of "Minsumobo", dub disco grooves of "Karambani" and flute-laden breeziness of "Rhythm Of Africa".

Review: Over the last decade, Lebanese DJ and traveling crate-digger has developed an obsession with the "golden age" of Ethiopian music in the late '60s and 1970s. Back then, Ethopian musicians developed a distinctive "Ethio" style that drew influences from a myriad of black American styles - most notably funk, soul, jazz, rhythm and blues, boogaloo and rock & roll - whilst remaining home-grown and East African in feel. Review: With crate digging partner Kon otherwise engaged producing in-demand disco edits, DJ Amir has kept himself busy. Here, he delves into his seemingly bottomless crates to put together a compilation of "rare music from across the Americas". Interestingly, much of the music - and, let's be honest, you won't be familiar with any of the featured artists - was recorded in New York during the 1960s and '70s, largely by immigrant musicians from Brazil, Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. That ensures a heady mixture of salsa, boogaloo, mambo, Latin-tinged funk and soul, rhumba, and Afro-Cuban jazz. In other words, it's a killer collection of lesser-known Latin gems. What's not to like?

This, though, is an altogether different beast: a new pressing of a barely known 1986 recording of the investiture ceremony of an Eze-Nri king - a ritual that has sporadically been carried out by members of the Nri Kingdom for well over a thousand years (and possibly even longer). It makes for fascinating listening and consists of little more than infectious drum rhythms, occasional chants, and occasional hypnotic melodies played on a hand-made wooden flute. The music itself is highly rhythmic - as you'd expect - and rooted in traditions that could well pre-date Christianity.

Review: Almost entirely ignored at the time of its original release, Nigerian drumming maestro Remi Kabaka's legendary original LP Son Of Africa has gone down in legend as the defining solo statement of an incendiary drummer, whose contributions to music across the jazz and rock spectrums is credited and felt strongly to this day. A founding member of Afro-jazz band Osibisa, Kabaka is credited for his work with many a Rolling Stone and Beatle, but it's his solo work on this Afro-funk rare gem that really gets the least easy to please among us going. An Afrofuturist statement to the core, its jubilant vocal chants and defiant trumpet lines are but mere pepperings over the boxy, banging body that is Kabaka's live Afrobeat quads.

His mix - here featured on the first of two discs - is superb, though it's the variety and quality of the unmixed tracks on CD2 that makes this a must-have for open-minded DJs. Shimmering, bass-heavy futurism and heady deep house sits side by side with samba, African rhythms, jungle-tempo jazz (one of Peshay's recent outings for Tru Thoughts), twinkling Latin house, future R&B and calypso (the excellent Armals Trinidad Cavaliers). Throughout, there's not a duffer in sight. In a word: essential.

Review: Jump 'N' Funk started life as a small event in New York, organized by Rich Medina in order to pay tribute to the genius of Fela Kuti. Since then, parties have been held across the world, with Medina and guests showcasing music by, or inspired by, the Nigerian Afrobeat legend. This debut Jump N Funk compilation follows a similar formula, delivering both purist Afrobeat cuts (see Fela's punchy "Stalemate", and "Na Oil" by son Seun and his band, Egypt 80), and tracks in other styles that draw heavily on the style. Now BBE are reissuing this highly prized piece as part of their continuing J Jazz Masterclass series, shining a light on some of the finest jazz from the Far East. Mayamoto started out dancing at Tokyo disco Mugen before embarking on a career as a soul singer, ending up scouted by Suzuki and joining his band. Review: During the 1980s, Nkono Teles was one of West Africa's most sought-after producers - a studio don called upon when an artist or label sought a modernist, synthesizer and drum-machine heavy sound that had the potential to cross borders. Teles was also a talented multi-instrumentalist, as his brief solo career proved. The highlight of his own artistic endeavours was "Party Beats", a sought-after set that's here reissued by BBE for the very first time. Featuring delay-laden drum machine rhythms, sweet and chiming synthesizers, jaunty fretless bass, glistening guitars, lead vocals by the man himself and a nine-piece Nigerian choir on backing vocals, it's a brilliant set that giddily joins the dot between synth-pop, electro, South African style "bubblegum", highlife and U.S style '80s soul slow jams.
