Review: Get ready to work that belly with this intense midriff workout direct from Lebanon. It is BBE who have secured the rights to reissue this classic floor filling album from Lebanese maestro Ihsan Al Munzer. Originally released in 1979, it's a cult classic fusion of funk, soul, world, folk, country and disco that is laced with squelchy Moog goodness and endlessly loose groves. "Jamileh" is the one that most often gets people in a spin with its intoxicating synth leads, snaking bass and playful sense of cheekiness. "Once A Year (Zourouni)" is another standout that is a little more romantic.

Mawa
Flamingos
Ivory
Mantra
Review: Last seen on the Tru Thoughts label back in 2011 with his debut LP Chapters, London based Masaaki Yoshida aka Anchorsong resurfaces on the like-minded BBE with the Mawa EP. The time out of the spotlight has evidently seen Yoshida expand on his production palette as the downtempo stylings of his Tru Thoughts output has been traded for something a lot more upbeat on the four tracks here. The lead track is a dizzying melange of sampled African chants and tape saturated percussion that's blessed with some abstract textural detail, whilst "Flamingos" features some excellent marimba manipulation and gives Jamie xx a run for his money in the emotive bass music stakes. The tempo gets thrusted upwards with "Ivory" though there is still a delicate feel to the overall production, whilst closing track "Mantra" sounds like Shangaan Electro gone UK house.

Happy Day (Classic main mix) (8:41)
Happy Day (Classic dub mix) (6:37)
Review: Some four months after he lost his battle with cancer, BBE is releasing Paul 'Trouble' Anderson's final production - a fittingly joyous, upbeat and life-affirming cover of gospel standard "Happy Day" featuring the impassioned vocals of soul singer John Redmond. On the A-side of this 12" edition you'll find the "Classic Main Mix", a bouncy and rubbery fusion of soaring gospel vocals, bumping house beats, mazy organ solos, rubbery disco bass and clipped guitar riffs. It's superb all told, and a fitting final hurrah from one of the UK's most significant DJs of the past 40 years. Over on the flip you'll find the slightly more stripped-back "Classic Dub", where impassioned vocal snippets ride Anderson's killer groove, bouncy pianos and spacey synths.

Review: So many of the compilations that BBE put out are vital history lessons as well as great listening experiences. This one is another case in point as it finds music historian, DJ and daytime party promoter John Armstrong - who has put together more than 200 compilations - digging deep to offer up an alternate take on the famous bubblegum sounds that came out of Black South Africa towards the end of the apartheid years. Yebo! Rare Mzansi Party Beats from Apartheid's Dying Years is a superb showcase of diverse sounds created by the youth of the day as a means of escape. There is already talk of a second volume, which we're very much ready for after hearing this one.

Arthur - "So Close To You" (4:28)
Future Force - "Reincarnation" (4:28)
Review: The Mighty Zaf and Mark GV Taylor are the deep digging pair behind BBE's such loved Americana compilation from 2014. Now they are back unearthing the goods on this tasty 7". Arthur released only one solo album but its was packed with gold. This single is from it and is a pure blue eyed soul with sweet licks from guitarist Dean Devener and whimsical vocals from Maye Cavallaro. Future Force's 'Reincarnation' was originally the B-side of NYC pop and funk outfit Future Force's only ever single. It's a groovy, funk laced and disco tinged roller.

Review: Veteran Swiss DJ/producer Alex Attias has long been one of Europe's more versatile and open-minded DJs, so it's fitting that BBE have given him a chance to flex his curatorial muscles. LillyLillyGood, which shares its name with a monthly party and label Attias runs, was inspired by Attias's desire to present "really good grooves that people want to dance to or listen to or home". He's done just that, whizzing through an unmixed selection that giddily flits between trippy, polyrhythmic acid madness (Grooveman Spot), jaunty jazz-funk (Freeeze, Cro Magnon's ultra-deep hook-up with Roy Ayers), synth-fuelled broken beat business (Tatham, Mensah, Lord and Ranks), deliciously spacey deep house (the Zanzibar remix of Nicole Willis's "Curiosity") and killer disco (Attias's own edit of Velvet Hammer's "Party Hearty").

Review: Capturing the essence and feels of the long-standing event he runs in his Swiss hometown of Lausanne, veteran digger and selector Attias presents a brand new compendium of sweet compositions that sum up he's at creatively and spiritually. Gems on gems on gems: highlights that we guarantee will appeal to your good tastes and dancefloor include the hypnotic vibraphone wash of Cro-Magnon's "Midnight Magic", the slept-on jittering funk of Tatham, Mensah, Lord & Ranks's "Cascade" and Material and Nona Hendrix's ludicrously funky, ultimately sleazy slinker "Over & Over". We suspect you'll be playing this record over and over, too...

Review: Veteran producer, selector and all round champion of impeccable grooves Alex Attias is back on BBE with a second volume of his "Lillygood Party" collection. These are some seriously tasteful jams skirting house but with an emphasis on soul. Peven Everett sounds resplendent on Stacy Kidd's "How Bad I Want Ya" while The Elements Of Life's "Children Of The World" is a soaring slice of jazz funk strapped to a smooth house beat. There's even Pharoah Sanders jamming his sax over a peppy rhythm section and spiritually charged house meanderings from Universal Tongues featuring Elle. It's a collection that surprises and satisfies at every turn.

Review: Second time around for "Virgin Ubiquity", a killer collection of previously unreleased Roy Ayers recordings that first appeared in stores way back in 2003. Focusing on the period between 1976 and '81, much of the material joins the dots between jazz-funk, soul, disco and boogie. Highlights are plentiful throughout, from the weighty, horn-heavy release of the Merry Clayton voiced "What's The T" and heady "Oh What A Lonely Feeling", to the languid vibraphone solos of mellow groover "Green and Gold", jazzy bliss of "Mystic Voyage (Version)" and the stomping, disco era street funk of "I Am Your Mind". In a word: essential.

Review: This is the second part of Virgin Ubiquity: Unreleased Recordings 1976-1981 and is again packed with tracks that are far more than unreleased findings from the cutting room floor. Each one serves as another feather in the bow of the virtuoso Ayers, who combined jazz, funk, soul and disco in magical and unique ways throughout his career. In doing so he laid down a precursor to acid jazz and hip hop. These are tracks that show off his dynamic, liquid rhythm sections and mellifluous keys, as well as the vocal talents of a range of collaborators who touch on soaring and sensuous highs as well as more gravel and earthy lows. Essential.

Review: The legendary Roy Ayers has a wealth of great material to his name but Virgin Ubiquity: Unreleased Recordings 1976-1981 might just be the cream of the crop. It's packed with gold that fuses soul and funk, jazz and disco into a load of killer cuts that never got their own release. There are husky vocal tracks featuring Merry Clayton on "Oh What A Lonely Feeling," "I Really Love You" and "What's the T?", sensual soul stirrers from Carla Vaughn such as "Mystic Voyage" and "Together Forever" and of course liquid synths and rhythm sections underpinning each of the tracks.

Review: Roy Ayers staked a bold claim by flaunting the fact that he had 'Reach[ed] The Highest Pleasure' back in June '77. Unfortunately for us back then, this lifetime hedonistic milestone - documented in instrumental funk form - was shelved for reasons unknown beyond simple artistic oversight. As said, this slick solo instrumental for drums, bass and vibraphone is a perfect soul-jazz, chillout trifecta, one for the rarities collectors.

A record that's currently fetching triple figures, this is the first time it's been repressed since it was released. Opening with the iconic whispered message of "Chicago", Roy takes us on a trip through his funkiest of quarters; the salubrious slap bass of "Lots Of Love", the Afrobeat staccato vocals and glock rocking vibrancy of "Silver Vibrations" and the dreamy cosmic jazz trip of "DC City" are just some of the highlights, all shared across the 12"s with no more than two tracks per side. Review: Few can match BBE when it comes to the funk and disco compilation stakes - the label's been issuing killer compendiums curated by some of the finest and most eminently knowledgeable DJs and diggers since the mid 90s. Soul In The Hole sees them hand the controls to Sadar Bahar, Chicago based DJ described by BBE as the city's "best kept secret". Bahar began DJing in the early 80s, a historically important time for music in Chicago and states he was driven by an "unquenchable desire to create one of the best collections ever". This 12 track compilation demonstrates Bahar has achieved that with aplomb, traversing through a colourful range of funk, soul, disco and boogie, with Frederic Mercier's "Spirit" a real gem.

Review: Singer Sandy Barber was just 22 when she recorded her one and only album, The Best Is Yet To Come, in 1977. At the time, it was largely ignored by most people within New York's dance music community, despite being packed with impeccable dewy-eyed soul moments and grandiose disco jams. Since then, it's become something of a must-have for disco collectors. Here the original album gets the BBE reissue treatment, allowing a new generation of disco heads to revel in its heartfelt simplicity. This deluxe, expanded edition includes a slew of unreleased and lesser-known Barber tracks recorded in the same period, plus alternative takes and remixes from John Morales and Al Kent.

Review: Sandy Barber's 'I Think I'll Do Some Stepping (On My Own)' came as part of 'The Best Is Yet To Come', the singer's 1978 album epitomising her influence over the genre of disco-soul. Now two remixers, OPOLOPO and John Morales, lead the charge in fleshing ever more joy out of this righteous original. 'You think you're so smart, well you're mistaken', goes Barber's refrain, as OPOLOPO's rework brightens nearly element to gaussian overload. John Morales' version, meanwhile, is much more emotive and belting, happily laboured in its faux-unquantized production.

Review: Three years on from the release of his last Private Collection compilation, British jazz survivor Kev Beadle returns with a third selection of little-known "independent jazz" from the 1970s and '80s. As usual, it's a pleasingly varied affair with a clear dancefloor focus. Beadle, a man with an enviable record collection, variously showcases South American jazz-funk fusion (see Banda Metalurgia's fantastic "La Em Guayaquil" and Francisco Mara Catlett's thrillingly upbeat, "Brazilian Love Affair" style smasher "Samba De Amor"), Nat King Cole style smoothness (the Leon Thomas voiced "Little Sunflower" by Louis Hayes Group), dazzlingly positive extended workouts (Clarice Lebbe and Charlie Hampton), heavy percussion jams (Finn Savery Trio) and confirmed jazz-dance classics (the soul-jazz stomp of Webster Lewis).

Review: Last year saw BBE call on Kev Beadle, a well respected digger, selector, radio host and label boss, to dust down his curation hat and put together Private Collection, his first compilation in almost two decades. Given the critical reception to that twelve track selection of independent jazz from the '70s and '80s it's little surprise to see BBE invite Beadle to dig through his personal archives for a second edition. Many of the tracks included here are the epitome of rare, given the fist airing outside the legendary club sessions that Beadle played back in the day and focuses more on the modal, spiritual and cosmic end of the jazz spectrum. A most enlightening collection from Mr Beadle.

Review: Founded in the early '70s by karaoke's accidental inventor Irv Kratka, Inner City Records's stamp on jazz was one of the strongest during its 15 year tenure. Paying respect to traditional and fusion, it caught the world's attention and admiration in a very special way. Super-Intendant selector Kev Beadle was one of its most influential pushers on this side of the pond, so he's the perfect man to select and secure the 14 label-defining classics you hear right here. A great starting point for any Inner City starter and a well-considered, dynamic collection for collectivists, this captures a unique moment in jazz that still sparkles and pops to this day.

Review: Boddhi Satva's highly tribalistic strain of house music has been at the top of our minds for a while, and riding high on our digging radars. This is because the artist has managed to tell his own story and detach himself from momentary scenes or fashions. Instead, tracks like "Ngnari Konon" use the house formula only as a backing rhythm, and with the help of Africa's Oumou Sangare, Satva produces what is more of a world music piece. The same goes for "Nankoumandjan", but "Benefit" strays closer to something like UK bassline thanks to its jump-up beat and r&b-style vocals by Omar, while "Fighting Spirit" is what you would call a classic 'bass house' joint, filled with gargling low-ends and plenty of sweet tribalism. Sick.

Review: Boddhi Satva is one of the leading lights of African house music, with a natural style that draws on his ancestral roots as much as it heads into the future. This new collection on BBE celebrates nearly 20 years since Satva first emerged with his debut album, spanning a whole host of career highlights and collaborations. There are some equally legendary figures involved here, from Afefe Iku and Alton Miller to Abel Tabu and Maalem Hammam, but the constant is Satva's style throughout. It's deeply rooted and spiritual, but also immediate and infectious like the best house music should be. At 30 tracks strong, this is a perfect primer for one of the finest forces in global dance music culture.

Review: With a sound that was honed in Las Vegas, there's a distinct showbiz flavour to west coast funk band Breakaway. Disbanded in 1980, this is the band's long-lost debut LP, and it's full of surprises and stunning moments of mesmerising production. For example; "My Symphony" comes on strong like an ABBA record while the track before it - "Everything's Been Said About You" - comes with a smoky Hendrix style riff while the track that follows it - "There's A New Group In Town" - is a psychedelic funk jam. With a tight sense of musicianship and funk throughout, Breakaway were truly unique and, thanks to BBE, their work is about to get the attention it deserves.

Review: To conclude their must-have series of reissues of disco-era albums by NYC-based Ghanain Sidiku Buari, BBE Music offers up a freshly re-mastered edition of 1979's "Revolution (Live Disco Show In New York City)". Whether or not the first four tracks were genuinely recorded at a "disco show" - even BBE doesn't know for sure - they certainly sound like straight-to-tape performances that brilliantly mix and match elements of Afrobeat, Juju, disco and heavy funk. The second half of the set was definitely recorded in a studio and includes cuts either closer in style to Ghanaian popular music of the period ("Revolution") or that fuse Buaki's usual sound with different influences (see the clear reggae influences of "Together We Can Rebuild It (Ghana Motherland)" and the quirky "Merry Xmas & Happy New Year").

It is thought that disc one here is a fully live recording from 1979 complete with bells, whistles, molten Moogs, bass heavy rhythms and plenty of party starting lyrics. On the second disc are four tracks that vary in style from cosmic disco to afro and include perennial crowd-pleasers Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. This has been a refreshing series and it is now completed in style.

Review: Recorded in 1983 and '84 respectively, "Feelings" and "Sidiku Buari & His Jam Busters" were the last albums recorded by Sidiku Buari, a New York based musician who turned to music after a promising career as an athlete in his native Ghana. He initially rose to prominence making highlife and afro-disco, but by the early '80s Sidiku was in full-on Afro-boogie and electrofunk mode, offering up tracks rich in colourful synthesizer lines, punchy electronic drums and righteous vocals in his native tongue. There's much to set the pulse racing across both slabs of wax, from the squelchy, club-ready brilliance of "Music" and "Anokwar (Truth)", to the slap bass propelled flex of "Minsumobo", dub disco grooves of "Karambani" and flute-laden breeziness of "Rhythm Of Africa".

Review: BBE continue to explore the little-known catalogue of Ghanaian athlete-turned-musician Sidiku Buari, whose West African style takes on disco and boogie made him a surprise star on the New York underground in the late 1970s. Here they offer up a fresh pressing of "Disco Soccer", a brilliantly vibrant and over-the-top set of NYC disco floor-fillers that's been stretched out across two slabs of wax (the original album was a single LP) to ensure a more dancefloor-friendly cut. Highlights include the bass-heavy, Moog-laden hustle of "I'm Ready", the Patrick Adams-esque brilliance of "Hard Times", the intoxicating, high-octane thrills of "African Hustle" and the pitched-down sweetness of "Games We Used To Play".

Review: Altera Vita is a remarkable duets recording featuring the talents of Kofi and Alina Bzhezhinska, who display their mastery of their respective instruments while also handling percussion duties. The album opens with the serene 'Tabula Rasa-Blank Slate,' setting the pace for a collection of six perfectly paced tracks that exude soul and spirituality. Kofi's well-timed explosions of power, particularly on 'Audite Me-Hear Me,' complement Bzhezhinska's fluid and water-like flow throughout the album, notably on 'Anima-Breathe.' While the album pays homage to jazz legends John and Alice Coltrane, it's primarily a tribute to the late Pharoah Sanders, evident in Kofi's composition 'Altera Vita (for Pharoah Sanders).' Originally released as a single, the album expands on this theme, delivering a powerful and moving masterpiece that honors the tradition of jazz spirituality. With its profound depth and emotional resonance, 'Altera Vita' stands as a respectful tribute to the enduring legacy of jazz legends.

Review: BBE has delivered something of a future classic here, as decorated Eastern European harpist Alinha Bzhezhinska and British tenor saxophonist Tony Kofi join forces on a picturesque full-length excursion dedicated to the memory of spiritual jazz maestro Pharoah Saunders. It's a genuinely unique and hugely evocative affair, with Kofi's meandering, mesmeric melodies and inspired improvisations snaking in and out of Bzhezhinska's dreamy harp motifs and melodic percussion instruments (think bells, marimbas, vibraphone, xylophone and so on). It's not a familiar musical palette, but it's one that consistently delivers - and then some. Our picks of a very strong bunch include lucid opener 'Tabula Rasu - Blank Slate', the exotic and psychedelic 'Audite Me - Hear Me', and the picturesque, meditative closing cut, 'Altera Vita - Another Life'.

Review: This tasty release is the first instalment of BBE and Soul Clap member Eli "Bamboozle" Goldstein's "House On 45" series. The basic idea is to offer up rare and hard to find house cuts that have only ever been released on seven-inch singles. To kick things off, Goldstein has selected Derrick Carter's 2017 "DC Nu Vox Dub" of his 2002 classic "Squaredancing In A Roundhouse", an insatiable version of a killer cut rich in bluesy samples, bumpin' beats and scat vocals. Equally as impressive is George Alexander and Big John Whitfield's 2009 cover of Joe Smooth classic "Promised Land", a warm and musically expansive affair that adds superb new flute and electric piano parts to one of house music's most celebrated songs.

Review: Over the last decade, Lebanese DJ and traveling crate-digger has developed an obsession with the "golden age" of Ethiopian music in the late '60s and 1970s. Back then, Ethopian musicians developed a distinctive "Ethio" style that drew influences from a myriad of black American styles - most notably funk, soul, jazz, rhythm and blues, boogaloo and rock & roll - whilst remaining home-grown and East African in feel. To prove the dancefloor-slaying potential of some of these raw, fuzzy and thrill-packed gems, Chahaud has joined forces with BBE to deliver this fine 22-track set. There's not enough space to list all of the highlights, but suffice to say it will appeal to all those who enjoy heavy, funk-fuelled hybrids of East African, Arabic and black American music.

Review: For the latest volume in their Foundations series on BBE, Kai Alce and DJ Spinna have decided to reissue one of the finest records from the earliest days of Chicago house, Chip-E's spellbinding 1985 anthem "Like This". This seven-inch edition features a fresh edit of Chip-E's original cub mix on the A-side. This version is essential largely because of the quality of K-Joy's impeccable vocal, though the re-mastered sound also makes Chip-E's crunchy Roland drum machine hits, bold synth-bass and spacey lead lines sound better than ever. Turn to the flip for the heavy and stripped-back "DDD Dub" version, which makes more use of the short "Like This" vocal, which was originally provided by the Godfather of House himself, Frankie Knuckles.

Review: Despite its' obscurity, Crystal Winds' 1982 album First Flight became something of a must-have for those on the British jazz-funk scene in the early '80s. Given that it was pressed in limited qualities on the Chicago-based private press imprint Crash Ear, copies regularly changed hands for huge sums. Here, BBE give the album its' first legitimate re-issue (bootlegs circulated back in 2003). It remains a superb set - a sinewy, sensual collection of smooth soul, laidback funk and musically intricate jazz-funk that portrays its' creators - local musicians Paul Coleman and Morris Brown - as unheralded titans of early '80s Chicago soul.

Review: To celebrate 20 years of BBE, the label has asked Keb Darge to gather together his personal highlights from the Legendary Deep Funk series he's been compiling since 1997. Naturally, his dusty-fingered selections - which can be heard in full on disc two - are undeniably spot-on, meaning that there's little in the way of filler or fluff. In fact, highlights appear at a rapid rate, from the James Brown style grunt of Ricky Calloway and Latin-influenced cheeriness of Sandi and Matues, to the anthem-like heaviness of Zebra's "Simple Song". These dancefloor hits are put into context on disc one, where turntablist extraordinaire Mr Thing cuts, scratches and juggles his way through Darge's superb selections.

Review: Like deep funk? Then you'd surely know of the legendary Keb Darge: the Scottish DJ who invented the term. Known as a leading authority on funk and soul music of the 1960s and beyond, he went from modest beginnings in Wigan, before moving to London in the '70s, bringing the sounds of Northern Soul to punters in the capital. Namely His 'Legendary Deep Funk' night at Soho's seminal strip club turned music venue Madame Jojo's. Following up his last compilation put together with Paul Weller; 2009's Lost & Found (Real R'N'B & Soul) LP, Darge presents hits from the 'Deep Funk' series to celebrate BBE's 20th year. Diggers will most certainly appreciate appearances on here such as Soul Drifter's "Funky Brother", Kenny Dope's edit of Family Of Eve's much sampled "I Wanna Be Loved By You", Joe Washington's "Blueberry Hill" and the classic "Love Call" by Ramsay and Company amongst many others.

Review: Techno veteran, DJ, composer, producer and notorious jazz lover Kirk Degiorgio explores both modal and seventies fusion sounds on this new full-length album project for BBE. Session drummer Chris Whitten brings some high-quality stick work to this album alongside Kirk's own signature vintage synth work, heavy percussive breaks and funk-fuelled future grooves. It's an album inspired by the great Library works of the 70s and 80s which, says Kirk, allows him to be "able to express ideas and thoughts in a maximum of two minutes at a time." It is creatively free and musically accomplished, as you would expect from this great British artist.

Review: This limited gatefold double 12", brought to us from that Dmitri guy who loves Paris, reshapes four classic Philly stompers for 2010 dancefloors. Get Down With The Philly Sound sees Dmitri in fine form with two reworks of the Teddy Pendergrass fronted Harold Mevlin & The Blue Notes, plus the Philly Devotions' "Hurt So Bad." And be sure to in Eddie ndulge in Dimtri's take oKendricks' epic soul belter "He's A Friend", which he turns into a hands-up disco gem.

Review: After almost a decade, Al Kent has decided to re-launch his acclaimed series of personal re-edits, "Disco Demands". He's clearly been itching to share his most successful disco reworks, because "Part 6" is an all action affair packed to the rafters with high-grade treats. You'll find the same material mixed together on one disc and in DJ-friendly unmixed form on the other. Highlights are plentiful, from the stretched-out, extra-percussive build-ups of Kent's revision of Ava Cherry's "You Never Loved Me" and the flanged guitar goodness of his extended revision of George McCrae's "Givin' Back The Feeling", to the high octane disco-rock thrills of Jo Bisso's "I Wanna Love" and the delay-laden late night sleaze of JD Hall's piano-powered "Wonder Woman".
