Africa: Live At The Carnegie Hall 1971
Cat: FOX 026. Rel: 28 Jan 20

Jazz
Africa (part 1) (13:49)
Africa (part 2) (14:21)
Review: In 1971, a benefit was held at Carnegie Hall for the Intergal Yoga Institute. Amongst the headline attractions was a performance by a hastily assembled "All-Stars" band whose members included Pharoah Sanders, Archie Shepp, Jimmy Garrison and Alice Coltrane. Together they played an epic, half-hour long interpretation of John Coltrane's partially improvised hard-bop and modal masterpiece "Africa". Here that piece gets issued again, with the recording split into two parts to fit on the record. Their version is utterly inspired - a wild, intoxicating and energizing spiritual jazz interpretation in which all players (including two drummers and bassists) are given a chance to shine. In a word: sublime.

The Brazilian singer-songwriter and guitarist Joyce Silveira Moreno was born and raised in the middle of Copacabana, a short beach stroll from the epicentre of the bossa nova universe. Her father was a Dane that had settled in Brazil, but she was raised by her mother and step-father in a typical Portuguese-Brazilian household. Since her older brother was friendly with leading lights of the bossa nova movement such as Roberto Menescal and Eumir Deodato, she was steeped in the form at an early age and witnessed its key evolution first-hand. At theage of 16 in 1964, she was taken to the studio by Menescal to contribute to the coveted debut album by the mythical group Sambacana, assembled to record the work of composer Pacifico Mascarenhas when the meagre budget would not allow the vocalists he preferred. Knowingthat a full-time career in music was certainly not guaranteed, she began studying journalism in 1967, shortly before her controversial song "Me Disseram" reached the finals of Rio's second International Song Competition. The following year, her self-titled debut album was released by Philips, produced by Armando Pittigliani, with orchestration by Dorival Caymmi and arrangements by Gaya; along with her own compositions, the album also featured songs by her rising-star friends, including Caetano Veloso and Marcos Valle.

Review: Almost everything about 'The Wings of Honneamise', to use the English-language title, has been slow burning, despite the 1987 film being described by legendary critic Roger Ebert as "one of the most ambitious of all anime productions" and a "visually sensational two-hour extravaganza". A massive movie, but even that review was written eight years after its original release, when the Japanese flick finally made it to US cinemas. Here we are then, almost 35 years on, and the score is available to own on its own, conceived and created by the Ryuichi Sakamoto - composer, curator, producer and owner of a hive mind's worth of musical knowledge. Introductions aside, the soundtrack makes perfect sense with or without watching anything, luring us in onto another cosmic plane through epic synth adventures, playful piano polkas and operatic overtures, resulting in what you could describe as a meeting of classical and RPG chip music.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Top of outer sleeve split, but otherwise in excellent condition***

When it was released in 1977, Pharoah Sanders' "Pharoah" album was panned by critics, yet these days is rightly considered a spiritual jazz classic. While the vocal number that opens the second side, "Love Will Find A Way", doesn't quite land, the two other lengthy compositions are Sanders at his mercurial, spiritual best. This is best exemplified by the outstanding A-side track "Harvest Time", a 20 minute exploration of spiritual jazz's outer reaches that gradually builds in waves and includes brilliant use of the droning tones of the little-used Harmonium. It feels exotic, hypnotic and deeply spiritual, just like the contemporaneous work of his friend Alice Coltrane. The album is worth picking up for this side-long track alone.
