Review: The original enfant terrible of the bass music world marks his second long player for 4AD with a sprawling opus of more than 30 skits and skirmishes daubed in his trademark colourful sonic scrawl. There is plenty here that reminds you of the early days of the producer's emergence when dubstep was a younger beast, from the spacious "Horrid" to the measured arpeggios of "Pray For Me", but you'll also find more intricate musings such as the dynamic and dramatic "Memories". Hype abounds on the creepy Funky of "VI-XI", while "Overdose" launches enthusiastically into a jungle tear out. At any given turn, you'll find yourself surprised, lurched from a serene mood into a manic one, only to be tempered again. There's a staggering range of ideas and styles to comprehend here, but would you want it any other way from one of electronic music's most outspoken upstarts?

Review: This collaboration between the sepulchral Sinatra and the kings of ceremonial metallic drone-worship, whilst it is transparently not a work for the faint of heart, is nonetheless worth all the excitement its announcement created in avant-garde circles, and more besides, It's more audibly a work from Walker's than Sunn O)))'s, yet with their assistance the rich melodrama and unflinching abstraction has rarely sounded more startling, or alarmingly approachable. What's more, the counterpoint provided by Sunn O))) to his stentorian baritone elevates proceedings to new heights of otherworldly intensity, resulting in no less than a game-changing triumph, and a clear album of the year contender from this odd couple.

Review: Album titles are rarely accidental in their connotations. US Girls don't break from that with this record. 'Heavy Light' gives more than a nod to Franz Kafka, the literary icon concerned with the existential threat posed to our souls by post-industrialised orders. As a body of music, there's plenty here to invoke a sense of dread and unease, taking well-targeted pot shots at politics rather than scattergun approaches to commentary, and pairing those with tangible atmosphere.

Meg Remy at her finest, then, with the mastermind behind this project finding herself as part of a collective for the first time under this moniker, rather than genuine leader -Basia Bulat and Rich Morel co-write. The end product is an epic in every way, from the catchier-than-corona opening title number, with its hook-y strings and pop groove, to the industrial-edges of the percussion-vocal duet 'Red Ford Radio'.

Review: Through her 'U.S. Girls' project, Toronto-based Meg Remy has released a consistently high quality run of albums that explore issues of femininity with a shaded and angular avant-pop sound. New record 'In A Poem Unlimited' sees Remy continue to explore identity politics, but in a comparatively warmer and more free sound as she collaborates with improvisational group The Cosmic Range. Structurally, the album enjoys an unpredictability of form that sprawls across skulking grunge, found sounds, crunching horn-sections and synth-driven industrial disco. Highlight track 'Incidental Boogie' exemplifies this binding of elements; the contrast of stomping, distorted with Remy's breathy and swaggering vocals is an intoxicating one. The breadth of Remy's palette makes this album an exhilarating listen, and - both as a vocalist and writer - Remy shines as an arresting and formidable talent.

Review: Planetarium is an intriguing proposition: a four-way, collaborative concept album themed around space (but actually about the human condition), written and produced by alt-rock singer/songwriter Sufjan Stevens, modern classical composer Nico Muhly, drummer James McAllister and jazz guitarist Bryce Dessner. Over the course of two slabs of vinyl and 75 minutes, the quartet - at times accompanied by no fewer than seven trombonists, for reasons not explained in the publicity material - speed between intergalactic ambience, political prog rock anthems, sweeping modern classical compositions, thrilling electronic/acoustic fusions, luscious piano ballads and lots more besides. Despite the impressive eclecticism on show, the whole thing feels surprisingly coherent thanks to frequent appearances from Stevens distinctive vocals.

Review: It may be speculative to wonder what difference moving to LA from Vienna may have made to London-born electro-soul crooner Christopher Taylor, but it's perhaps resulted in a more upbeat and upfront sound, one that for all its sample and beat-driven experimentation wastes little time in consigning talk of 'blubstep' and comparisons to James Blake firmly to history. Yet for all this album's flirtations with mainstream R&B, it still maintains strength in depth, with both Taylor's mellifluous voice and politically-inspired lyrics rendering it a fine blend of hooks and heart.

Review: Any artist lucky enough to share a stage with the Metropole Orkest should be taken very seriously indeed - whether that's the institution's full 54-person strong entourage or a pared back team sheet. The Dutch aficionados, led by acclaimed British conductor Jules Buckley, set the benchmark for contemporary orchestral work, collaborations with cutting edge electronic producers and pop songwriters abound. For Sohn, the honour of working alongside these world-beating musicians came as part of 2019's Amsterdam Dance Event, the world's largest electronic music festival, with the stage set at Melkweg, arguably the most iconic live venue in the Dutch capital. Background details done, all you need to know is this is a stunning showcase of a songwriter on top form, capable of creating vast atmospheres with sparse, tripped out R&B pop, with those harmonies, basslines and strings rendered more powerful than ever thanks to incredible supporting cast. A genuinely unforgettable listening experience.

Review: Forty years ago a yet unknown cult band was to release a LP that never came. Interesting enough, Rema-Rema - made up of former members of The Models and Siouxsie & The Banshees - delivered 4AD one of its first releases: Wheel In Roses (1980). All tracks from that EP, in their new wave, post-punk glory, feature on this Fond Reflections LP, a compendium of sorts detailing across 17 tracks the band's raw and unplugged sound. Collected, re-mixed and engineered by band member Gary Asquith and mixing technician Takatsuna Mukai, the result is an archival, patchwork collage of a lost but not forgotten trip down the lanes of UK folklore. Get to grips with "Fond Affections", "Feedback Song" and "Why Ask Why".

Review: Five long years, half a lengthy decade. We've waited a long time for Purity Ring to return to the release schedule and they mean pretty serious business in doing so. This one's not necessarily for the fainthearted, although the contents are gorgeous, glistening pop adventures that neither conform to standards in that rather loose and vague 'genre', nor jar ears to the point of putting anyone off. Opener, 'Rubyinsides' is a useful case in point. A lunging bassline and staccato off-beats are paired beneath near-falsetto vocals of the breathy rather than shrill nature. Shades of Lykke Li abound, then. 'Vehemance' follows a similar rhythmic pattern, with all the tracks existing in a macro-produced electronic scape. Subject matters are where the contrasts and challenges are found, with resilience in the face of obstacles that could be overwhelming - fear of the unknown, death itself - a consistent theme.

Review: Although an outstanding pop artist, Hannah Rodger's music as Pixx sits well and truly in the alt-pop realm. Since surfacing in 2015 with Fall In - that was later followed up by her 2017 debut album Age Of Anxiety - she's continues her relationship with 4AD once more thanks to Small Mercies. This second LP sees the English artist collide future electronic pop and R&B genres with the grungy guitars and synth rock styles of yesteryear. And for this record, Pixx assumes a different persona than before, her label says, to introspectively examine the damage done by religion, gender-based power hierarchies and stereotypes. Our picks, "Disgrace" and the oh-so-grungey "Mary Magdalene".

Review: Britain is on the very cusp of the post-Thatcher era, mistakes not necessarily learnt from the past 11 years, but certainly evidence mounting for the failure of individualism and the importance of communities. Change is needed, and change is what the next decade would bring. Some of which began with this album, unveiled in 1989, now regarded among the best shoegaze outings of all time. The label doesn't sit that well with us, though. There's just too much else happening with Pale Saints' pacy, expansive and utterly compelling debut. Post punk accents, eruptions into (and introductions based on) pure noise, and surrealist dream pop. Presented here in a new collector's edition, featuring recordings from the band's seminal John Peel session and demos, we couldn't think of a band so deserving of being discovered by a new generation, and re-celebrated by those who were there at the time.

Review: Seven albums in, The National have solidified their songwriting with confident nuance, and 'Sleep Well Beast' is another milestone on this consistent band's upward curve. Standout ballad 'Carin at the Liquor Store' waltzes and wanders through melancholic nostalgia and glimmers of hope, exemplifying the sound and storytelling that The National are so renowned and respected for. Small cracks in the concrete gloom appear with the more energetic and optimistic tracks, allowing just enough light in for this masterfully executed album to encourage repeat listens, which will in turn, and as always, provide ample rewards.

Review: It's fair to say that when The National release an album the Cincinnati originating supergroup garner the same type of attention that Radiohead once drew. With some futuristic production techniques creeping its way into the band's engineered sound, a new expressionism in the group's sound on "I Am Easy To Find" makes its way into the open, if only subtly. With the opening passages of "You Had Your Soul With You" sounding something like Battles' "Atlas", the music breaks down into a fanfare of traditional yet supercharged folk instrumentations; with drums, spoken word, strings in all their various forms, and the familiar smokey drawl of Matt Berninger's voice sitting snugly on top of subtle drum machines and synthesisers. Super ballads and sincerity.

Review: A decade has passed since The National made their commercial breakthrough with fifth album, "High Violet", a set which many critics still believe is the Ohio-based band's finest full-length to date. To celebrate the anniversary, the band's label 4AD has decided to press it on vinyl for the very first time, packaging the marbled purple and white vinyl in a triple-gatefold sleeve. It's an awesome package, but what will excite fans most is the third slab of wax. This features a mixture of rare, hard-to-find and previously unreleased material from the period, including a trio of live recordings, the near-mythical "Wake Up Your Saints" and "Walk Off", and a fine alternate mix of "Terrible Love".
