Review: If 2014 was a breakthrough year for Mo Kolours and Reginald Omas Manmode IV, then 2015 has served a similar purpose for the third Deemamode brother, Jeen Bassa. Here, he follows up the well-received All My People 12" with Time Waves, a mini-album that showcases his take on the family's now familiar globally focused, "deep house-meets-MPC-beats" sound. Predictably, it's something of a humid and smoky treat, delivering tracks bristling with soulful intent, rich musicality, dusty beats and wayward samples (sources include Mauritian drum records, scratchy reggae, and blazed East Coast hip-hop). While there are some superb individual tracks, it should be considered as a single artistic expression; judged in these terms, it's very special indeed.

Review: Those who pay attention to these things know that Poland's EABS (short for Electro Acoustic Beat Sessions) are one of the hottest jazz combos in the world right now - an accolade earned not only via their incredible playing, but also their willingness to fuse elements of classic Polish and American jazz with hip-hop, soul and funk influences. Here, the fast-rising septet joins forces with 22a regular Tenderlonious (who provides flute and soprano sax solos) for two epic workouts. A-side "Kraksa" is something of an epic; an ever-changing 13-minute jazz journey that brilliantly switches from floor-rocking goodness to horizontal bliss midway through. "Svantetic", meanwhile, wraps fuzzy rock guitars and hammered-out piano riffs around a sweaty groove that just grows in intensity throughout.

Review: Sample-loving downtempo fusionist Mo Kolours has yet to make a duff record, so hopes are naturally high for this dinked 7" single on 22a. Predictably, he's in fine form throughout, sauntering between seriously dubbed-out, tropical-tinged hip-hop beats (the ultra-baked heaviness of "Cerasee Doctor"), heavyweight Mauritian drum jams ("Margoze") and hard-to-define Indian Ocean funk (the fretless bass, weird noises and handclaps of quick-fix "Goya". He leaves the best till last, with the skewed hip-hop funk of "Menroe" - all wonky synth-bass, crunchy beats, sampled chants, tropical hand percussion and dubbed-out electronic stabs - hitting home hardest; he's still not made a bad record.

Review: Lorenzo Morresi is an Italian DJ, producer and musician who now makes his debut on bristling London label 22a alongside the boss Tenderlonious. This 7" is an album sampler of Italian library inspired disco-funk that draws on the sound's 70s heyday. It was a shared love of this sound and this period that brought these two artists together having first played together at a gig in Italy in 2017. Having finally got together to record, they have mixed up contemporary analogue inspired arrangements and experimental, joyful, playful sounds that are as good at home as they will be on the 'floor. The album drops next year, and this is a fine taster.

Review: Lorenzo Morresi and Tenderlonious are back to build on the success of their first collaboration, last year's 'Cosmica Italiana.' This new single comes ahead of a forthcoming debut album later in the year and features a couple of gorgeous tunes. 'Acqua' is a joyous tune with a steady 6/8 groove that is loaded with flutes, sax lines and arpeggiated synthesizers. On the flipside is 'Tema Cinque' which comes as an electro ballad, powered by hypnotic drums and sweeping pads with lush and moody sopranos. On this evidence, the upcoming album is going to be an utterly perfect musical escapism.

Review: Following hot on the heels of label boss Tenderlonious's mini album, London's 22a introduces us to a new extended family member, Neue Grafik. Located in Paris, Neue Grafik represents a generation of artists at the forefront of electronic music. Routing his influences in a heavy 70s feel, his latest EP 'Soul Conspiracy' invites the listener to explore a fusion of live and programmed electronic music. Grafik makes good use of live instrumentation on this EP, featuring plenty of Fender Rhodes and lead synth, as well as a sprinkling of live drums and a strong guest vocal from the soulful likes of Wayne Snow. Tunes like 'Modern Man' and 'Thanos Interlude' adopt an inspired broken beat approach, reminiscent of early Bugz productions, whilst the title track 'Soul Conspiracy' has a distinct 22a quality, fusing classic house beats with a lo-fi boogie feel.

Review: When 22a released the debut album from four-piece Ruby Rushton back in 2015, few of those involved were particularly well known. Now, of course, it's a different story. Led by saxophone and flute-wielding Ed Cawthorne (AKA Tenderlonious) and featuring drums by Yussef Dayes (one half of Yussef Kamal), the band looks set for a major breakthrough. "Trudy's Songbook: Volume 1" is an effortlessly summery and organic affair that stylishly shuffles between tracks that meld elements of spiritual jazz, soul, hip-hop, salsa, Afro-jazz and freestyle improvisation. It's hugely entertaining, impeccably produced and brilliantly played. You can bet your bottom dollar that Gilles Peterson is a fan, and you should be, too.

Review: The Ruby Rushton gang is one of contemporary jazz's finest. They pull a wide range of influences into their music and have had an instantly recognisable sound since busting onto the scene with their still classic debut album Two For Joy. They reach the same heights again here with Giden's Way. 'Spanish Raga' was inspired by an evening out in Madrid in 2019 and floats on dreamy flutes while 'Fall From Grace' is lead by some virtuous sax and florid drum work. The flip side offers two more brilliantly busy but accessible, upbeat and sunny jazz jams.

Review: If the January blues have hit you hard, we'd recommend picking up this slice of jazz-funk/fusion sunshine from 22a stalwarts Ruby Rushton. A-side "Overture 1" is particularly delicious. Composed by keyboardist Aidan Shepherd, it channels the spacey, synthesizer-laden warmth of "Weather Report" and re-tools it for 2020. It's one of the band's loveliest tunes to date, and that's saying something. Over on the flip they set their sights firmly on the dancefloor, layering twinkling Rhodes keys and punchy horns over a live house rhythm. It's jazz house, Jim, but not as we know it!

Review: It's been almost four years since Ed "Tenderlonious" Cawthorne launched the Ruby Rushton project alongside a slew of musician pals, including Yussef Kamaal drummer Yussef Deyes and Mo Kolours man Joseph Deenmamode. In that time, they've released a trio of fine albums, two of which - "Trudi's Songbook" volumes one and two - are here reissued on one double-vinyl set. If you missed out first time around, it should be an essential purchase. Both albums offer a superbly imaginative and entertaining fusion of jazz, soul, hip-hop, salsa, Afro-jazz, freestyle improvisations and punchy jazz-funk epics, with Cawthorne's smart, unfussy production allowing the quality of the band's performances to really shine.

One Mo' Dram (5:00)
Review: The Tenderlonious-helmed UK neo-jazz super-group Ruby Rushton has a new album in the works. While we'll have to wait until April to hear that set, titled "Ironside", 22a has been good enough to sling out this taster single featuring two tracks that have made the cut. A-side "Eleven Grapes" is particularly potent, with a jaunty, ear-catching flute and electric piano solo ushering in a breezy, morning-fresh trip into Latin-tinged jazz-funk fusion. Over on side B, "One Mo' Dram" is a hushed and evocative affair, with starry, Herbie Hancock style solos and atmospheric cymbals introducing an organic, all-live hybrid broken beat/jazz workout.

Review: Tenderlonious' prolific explorations of contemporary jazz continue unabated with this new album from his supergroup, Ruby Rushton. With Mo Kolours and Yussef Dayes (formerly of Yussef Kamaal) amongst the highly skilled players in this ensemble, the quality spilling out of their fourth album need not be questioned. The band leader's signature flute stylings skip and twirl across the top of the music, with the overall brew striking that elusive but oh-so-sweet balance between loose, free-wheeling expression and rock solid groove. Fresh and satisfying at every turn, this is proof of why the modern jazz scene is so vibrant right now. Ruby Rushton can do no wrong!

Review: Given the runaway success of the first volume in Ruby Rushton's Trudi's Songbook series earlier this year, it was probably inevitable that we'd get a follow-up sooner rather than later. This time round, the Tenderlonious-helmed band has decided to push the boat out even further, beginning with a wonderfully dreamy 10-minute exploration of improvised jazz-funk/hip-hop fusion ("Tisbury Truckin") and ending with their first cover version: a superbly atmospheric, flute-laden interpretation of Herbie Hancock classic "Butterfly". In between, you'll find a range of effortlessly loose and languid jazz workouts rich in superb solos and peerless percussion (provided, in part, by Joseph "Mo Kolours" Deenmamode).

Review: 2015 might not feel like that long ago, but in terms of the UK's jazz scene it's a lifetime. When Tenderlonious, Yussef Dayes, Nick Walters and Adrian Shepherd laid down Two For Joy, they lit the touch paper for the explosive resurgence of UK jazz as a young, hungry and inspired modern thing. It's a scene and community which has gone from strength to strength since, in what should feel like a relatively short space of time. But wind it back with this reissue of the acclaimed album and realise how potent the ideas were. It's jazz played by jazz players, but you can feel the looming influence of hip-hop and electronica informing the angles to make for a new approach which brought jazz screaming back into the wider population.

Review: Touchingly, the A side of latest single from Ruby Rushton is a tribute to de facto bandleader Tenderlonious' father, who spent many years working in Nepal. Entitled "Sun Khosi", the track is a brilliantly summery blast of percussive, Afro-fired jazz fusion laden with sweat-soaked horn blasts, snaking Latin trumpet lines, deep Rhodes notes and inspired alto flute solos from Tenderlonious. B-side "Chrysalis" was composed by keys-player Adrian Shepherd and was influenced by the style of one of his inspirations, jazz pianist John Taylor. It's up-tempo, bold, hugely enjoyable, electric piano-heavy and sits somewhere between jazz-funk and the kind of jazz-fusion fare made famous by Azymuth.

Here, four years after his On Flute mini-album back in 2016, he serves up another album of his signature flute-lead sounds on the 22a label with elements of Detroit house, p-funk, synth grooves and more all featuring. 'Isaac's Theme' is a gorgeously deep and reflective flute solo while 'Neptune's Mood' ride on a broken beat. 'Still Flute' is a brilliant jazzy house tribute, presumably, to the St Germain classic.

Review: Armed with a vast array of instruments (both electronic and acoustic),Ed Hawthorne AKA Tenderlonious spent the COVID-19 lockdown making music in his South London flat. The result is "Quarantena", the 22a founder's third solo full-length. Musically, it's a glorious hotch-potch of analogue synthesizer-driven dystopian soundscapes (see opener "1984 (Part One)"), breezy electro-jazz ("Roco's Raga", the blissful and Balearic title track), shimmering new age ambience ("Falkor Flight", "Total Recall"), jaunty jazz-funk ("Lockdown Boogie", "Moment's Notice"), sun-kissed jazz ("COVID Blues"), and hard-to-pigeonhole, dancefloor-ready workouts ("Maskup/Gloveup"). Taken as a whole, it's far more downtempo and picturesque than his previous albums, offering genuine musical escapism tailor-made for these troubled times.

Review: While jazz is never far from Tenderlonious' thoughts - he is a proficient flautist and the man behind the superb Ruby Rushton combo - he has plenty of other musical strings to his bow, as last year's rather fine "Hard Rain" album proved. "After The Storm", his latest EP, treads a similar sonic path, tiptoeing between ultra-dreamy, sunrise-ready deep house (the fluttering flute solos and Larry Heard grooves of the superb title track), Kaidi Tatham style jazz-funk fusion ("G Flex"), broken deep house smoothness with added Herbie Hancock synths ("D Low"), and crunchy 21st century jazz-funk ("Broken Hearts Club"). In other words, it's business as usual for one of Britain's best.

It's a deep, woozy and atmospheric affair, with the storied Peckham producer flitting between jazz-funk-fuelled deep electro ("Buffalo Gurl"), lapsed lo-fi deep house ("Hard Rain", "Casey Jr"), blunted beats ("GU22"), sparkling ambient jazz ("Low Tide"), wonky futurist synthesizer grooves ("Another State Of Consciousness"), and cuts so deep, jazzy and off-kilter that they defy definition ("Aesop Thought", where his distinctive flute playing takes centre stage).

Opener "Think Twice", a deliciously deep, hypnotic and atmospheric fusion of locked-in house grooves and spacey instrumentation, delivers a jaw-dropping start, before Cawthorne moves towards sunny, jazz-funk influenced deep house territory on the luscious "Uncle Larry". His love of lilting space funk synth solos comes to the fore on late night MPC house treat "BIG Leffe", while Dennis Ayler swings by to add his deft musical touch to "Tru Blue", a jazzy broken house number in which Cawthorne once again proves his ability as a flautist.

Review: Tenderlonoius has long been at the heart of the nu-jazz and broken beat sound that has proliferated over the last five for so years, as has his 22a label. They have both been prolific sources of new school sounds and old school influences and You Know I Care is another full length statement of skill from the man who has often worked in collaboration or with his Ruby Ruston band. It is a widescreen offering that ranges from brooding ballads to epic modal delights which will appeal to all sorts of jazz heads old and new. All the tunes are standards by some of Tender's favs including Jackie McClean, Clifford Jordan, Wayne Shorter and Duke Pearson.

Review: It would be fair to say that Tenderlonious has been rather busy of late. In recent months we've seen a sparkling seven-inch from his band Ruby Rushton and a new solo EP of Tubby Hayes covers. Here he presents another highly personal project: a fresh three-tracker made in Lahore last year with a little help from Pakistani 'anything goes' musical quartet Jaubi. As you'd expect, all three tracks are rooted in the musical traditions of the Indian sub-continent. Perhaps the most ear-catching is opener "Impressions", where Tenderlonious adds breathless flute solos to a bed of raga style Tabla rhythms and foreboding chords. That said, there's much to admire elsewhere on the EP, not least the intoxicating, haunting ambient jazz of "Shalamar Gardens".

Bear witness to the full breadth of 'Tender's technical and compositional skills, spanning masterful executions in jazz, hip-hop, afrobeat, latin and freeform jazz. The 22archestra was conceived after he was invited to record at the legendary Abbey Road Studios. The whole crew was rounded up and the album was recorded during a single eight hour session - a testament to their musicianship and ability to nail a take, which has been equally honed on stage during their intense live performances.

Review: Tenderlonious and Dennis Ayler first joined forces in the studio last year, with the first fruits of their combined labours (a fine cut called "Put it On") appearing on Ayler's first 7" single for 22a. They clearly enjoyed working together, because they've now laid down an entire album of collaborative efforts. Heavily rooted in jazz, broken beat and vintage Herbie Hancock material, the album's genius lies in its energetic fluidity, thrilling percussive looseness and the duo's refreshing "anything goes" approach. Listing all of the sounds and styles represented would take forever, but suffice to say it's one of the most vibrant, colourful and hard-to-pigeonhole sets we've heard for a while.

Review: For the latest release on his 22a label, Tenderlonious has persuaded trumpeter Nick Walters to reassemble his Paradox Ensemble outfit for the first time since 2013. "Awakening" is the 13-piece collective's debut album and, like previous releases, attempts to strike a balance between tight ensemble playing and more freeform, solo-powered passages. This plan is arguably best executed on the warm, groovy and ambidextrous B-side opener "Brahman", where wild instrumental solos ride a swinging groove and rich synthesizer chords, but is also expertly explored on the Latin-tinged dancefloor jazz opener "34268". That said, the collection's slower numbers are also inspired, particularly the dreamy "Dear Old Thing".
