Review: Released earlier this August, Brighton-born jazz musician and producer Chip Wickham's four-track EP 'Love & Life' is a multi-instrumental easy-listening record that has a subtle depth to its sloozy production. The opening track 'Space Walk' sets the bar right out of the gate with an incredible flute-driven story, backed by some gentle, brassy drums and jazz lounge piano. There's a distinct lo-fi quality to it in its vibe, but the sound of the xylophone is just so crisp against the tenor sax - it's like you're right there in the studio with Wickham.

Review: Tyrone Washington's 'Submission' is a timeless gem that gets pressed up to 7" here both in original form but also with the masterful Kenny Dope remix on the flip. The A-side is a hard edge jazz number with squealing reeds and tumbling drums, chord stabs and an insistent and rather dark energy. Kenny makes it into a much more smooth number with drums that nails you to the floor. The sax stabs are more muted and fade into the background as the menacing chords come to the fore. Two vital tunes for the collection for sure.

Review: Colemine continue their 7" singles charge with this new one by Tre D'Ambrocia, a budding contemporary soul singer - to say their future prospects are "promising" would be an understatement. Sullen but no less emotional, A-sider 'Closer' is a nighttime, g-funk-whistling exercise in soul, with D'Ambrocia's vocals seeming to span both soul and r&b as it cuts through the mix like a beckoning finger, urging us to "come closer". Sanders was the first to record and release it on February 14, 1969 and it has since been covered by the likes of Don Cherry, Krokodil, The Dynamics, Lord Echo and many more artists right up to the present day. Here we get the Leon Thomas versions from 1969 as well as the one he recorded alongside Louis a year later. Two sublime sounds that make the whole world feel at peace.

Review: The Syphons are the esteemed house band at Suit Yourself Music and here the unveil their second release featuring the legendary Fay Hallam on Hammond organ. Fresh from supporting Darrell Smith on 'Moving In On Somebody Else's Heart/I Don't Know Where We Go From Here,' The Syphons again get the best from Hallam who showcases her mesmerising organ prowess here. Review: Dynamite cuts are in the midst of releasing a fresh series of De Wolfe library grooves, owing to the esteemed Dutch library's impressive catalogue of obscurios which nonetheless still provide ample source material for DJs, samplers, and obsessives. These two grooves are lifted from the original, said-to-be-mega-rare Formula album by Barry Stoller, from 1972. Review: The Soul Surfers & Shawn Lee have linked their creative energies once more with a new pair of singles for the cultured Spasibo Records. Both tracks on this limited gold vinyl were recorded in 2018. One was captured at Moscow's Magnetone studio during Lee's visit for the premiere of a movie documenting his prior recording with The Soul Surfers, and the other was recorded remotely with The Soul Surfers at their Nizhniy Novgorod headquarters and Lee at his London studio, The Shop. The collaboration is a fruitful one with two sublime and timeless funk cuts featuring some bittersweet replaying of classic melodies.

Review: The Soul Surfers share their debut 7" on Broc Recordz, following a promising entree working with various raw funk and soul greats, including with Jack Nilovic on his 'Maze of Sounds' compilation, not to mention appearing on the first volume of the recent Two Tales For The Mind V/A. 'High Roller' and its counterpart 'Big Slick' are two large, roomy, instrumental sonic gateau slices, on which an outsized four-string occupies the front and centre of both mixes, to megalomaniac, almost gluttonous effect. Review: The Sorcerers have been a mainstay of the ATA Records imprint since it was founded in their home city of Leeds back in 2015. Here, the Yorkshire combo, whose primary influences have always been Ethopian "Ethio-jazz" and obscure European horror soundtracks, return to action with a heavyweight dancefloor workout. In truth "In Search of Sha Hulud" is a far more funk-fuelled affair than you might expect, with exoitic Middle Eastern melodies and fluttering flute solos rising above killer drum breaks and a seriously heavy bassline. Turn to the flipside for "The Anderson Spectrum", a pitched-down, 1960s style library funk jam credited to The Yorkshire Film and Television Orchestra, which appears to be another project helmed by leading members of the Sorcerers.

Review: Stroom has another great audio curiosity on its hands here with this 7" from Sonoko. She is a Japanese artist who works in the worlds of ambient and ambient, chanson and elevator, experimental and folk. Both of the cuts here are uplifting sounds that will bring some joy to the gloom of this season. They were made by the artist somewhere in the 90s with 'Meditation' a sensuous sound with hotel lobby piano playing and delicate vocals while 'Un homme et une femme' has a more icy and cold electronic sound with delicate keys twinkling like snow.

Up first is the main theme from 1974's subway hijack movie The Taking Of The Pelham One Two Three and it is one with a funky, jazzy, high-octane sound that has been sampled by Company Flow, Mix Master Mike and many more. On the backside is an edit of a tune from Manfred Mann Chapter Three's self-titled 1969 LP. This one has been famously sampled by The Prodigy. Another great little 7".
