  2. Salem Tradition - "Kabare" (Alma Negra rework) (5:15)
  3. Lindigo - "Tany Be" (Alma Negra dub) (8:55)
Review: For the latest excursion on their eponymous label, the Alma Negra crew is in full remix mode, in turn reworking tracks from contemporary Maloya combo Lindigo and lesser-known French Afro artist Salem Tradition. Their vocal and dub interpretations of the former's "Tany Be" are particularly special. While the dub is little more than a killer spaced-out percussion track with added delay-laden vocal and instrumental snippets, the "remix" is a near perfect fusion of woozy, spacey deep house and traditional maloya - all half-chanted vocals, snaking sax lines and warm bass. Those looking for heavy and druggy, kick-drum driven tribal Afro-house vibes should head straight for the remix of Salem Tradition's "Kabare", which is little more than loads of drums with an evocative vocal atop.

  2. Les Hamsters - "Hamsters Frappe" (4:30)
Review: Destination Martinique: Sofrito's Island Series gets lively to the sound of Michel Bagoe and the brilliantly named Les Hamsters. The former lays down a sublime carnival soundtrack with relentless drums and a highlife feel to the guitars while the latter develop the street party feel with rippling drums and tightly plucked guitars. Guaranteed to whisk your dance to another world, just like the rest of the Sofrito discography!

  1. Ray Barretto - "Right On" (2:43)
  2. Latin Brothers - "Las Calenas Son Como Las Flores" (3:57)
Review: Raroraro rev up the rarity engine once again with this sunkissed Latin double-up. Ray Barretto's heavily sampled (but seldom bettered) "Right On" gets the A: a hammering piano hook, whirlwind percussion and big horns, it's an instant carnival that's still as fearless as it was it was in 1970. Columbia's Latin Brothers' take us five years forward with "Las Calenas Son Como Las Flores". A much more smouldering number with a little more island magic in the horn arrangement, this one builds from sunset to a fiery sunrise. Limited to 200 copies.

  2. Los Belkings - "Septima Partrulla" (2:16)
Review: The Budabeats imprint is a welcomed addition to the funk and soul reissue game, and this third instalment from the label is exactly what we need to be hearing right now - something upbeat, tropical and rare in its original format. On Side A, you got 1971's "O Telefone Tocou Novamente" by the Brazilian Singers, and it's a wavy, magical psych-funk bombshell in the same vein as Marcos Valle's best work. On the flip, there's a special surf-rock-inspired song by Peru's Los Belkings and, yes, it's from 1969 and still sounding like a total monster almost forty years later. Recommended!

  3. Ibo Combo - "Mateau"
  4. Les Lups Noirs - "Pile Ou Face"
Review: Killer new Sofrito 12" with hypnotic Carnival rhythms, DIY electro and vital Compas experiments from the Haitian archives! Lead in the way is a subtle edit of "Zanmi Camarade" from Claudette & Ti Pierre by Stockholm's Tropical Treats crew, this 1979 cover version of the folk song that is quite bewildering, with haunting vocals weaving a spell over a heavy polyrhythmic drum machine groove and arpeggiated synth backing. Just as impressive is the Siwo update of Ti Marcel's rugged, hypnotic Rara track "Nan Point La Vie" is dominated by the single-note 'Vaksin' bamboo flute, which Sofrito call "nature's sub-bass". Holding it down on the B Side is some untreated material, with an Ibo Combo cover of Coupe Cloue's evergreen "Mateau" complemented by a "Pile ou Face" from Les Loups Noirs which was a highlight of the Strut compilation Haiti Direct.

  2. Samba A L'aeroport
Review: From the label who gave us Human Egg, The Joubert Singers and The Real Fake MC comes yet another startlingly refreshing piece of jazz funk. Last Bongo In Paris (AKA old Favorite faces Cleon and Jazzy Pidjay) fire up a soft riff fusion between the horn and percussion sections while the piano confirms the Caribbean flavour you can hear on the refrains. "Samba A L'aeroport" lives up to its name; a samba, naturally, it's played softly with an over cheeriness and a cyclic loop as you'd imagine to hear played for infinity in an airport lounge. But in a 'going on holiday' kinda way and not a 'delayed for nine hours and want to kill people' type of way. Sun kissed and soulful.

Review: Heavyweight Latin funk from 1968: In case you're unacquainted, "Happy Soul" is the ultimate super-swing sample source of Christina Aguilera's "Ain't No Other Man", and remains the most distinctive cut in Cortez & The Moon People's extensive repertoire. We head over to Cuba for the B-side as La Lupe digs deep with a sun-splashed salsa cover of "Fever". Swelteringly good.

  1. Rumberos De Ayer - "Quinto Y Bongo" (Jose Marquez mix) (7:46)
  2. La Sancha - "Canto Del Caribe" (Jose Marquez mix) (8:05)
Review: Jose Marquez has long been a member of the Basic Fingers family. Since making his first contribution to the acclaimed re-edit imprint back in 2011, he's regularly delivered tasty reworks of Latin jams and African gems. Here he returns with two more killer Latin cuts piled high with South American percussion. "Quinto Y Bongo" smartly combines killer drums and vocals from an unknown, stripped-back salsa record with the sort of subtle, spacey synths and thickset bassline you'd normally find on a high calibre deep house record. "Canto Del Caribe" is, if anything, even heavier, with the combination of sturdy house kicks, dense Latin percussion and chanted vocals creating an intoxicating mood.

  1. De Evergreens - "Es Lilin" (3:03)
  2. Les Jaguars De Casablanca - "Gonzales" (2:36)
Review: Here's something to set the pulse racing: a must-have seven-inch containing two curiously off-kilter cuts from obscure "beat generation" bands of the early 1960s. Der Evergreens "Es Lilin" (that's "Ice Lolly" in English, apparently) is a sun-kissed rhythm and blues cover of a Sudanese love song recorded in Rotterdam in 1965. It's fairly short but very, very sweet. Arguably even better is Les Jaguars De Casablanca's 1962 cover of surf classic "Gonzales". The band was truly international - Spanish and French guitarists and a Moroccoan rhythm section - and on the resultant recording you can tell. Think of it as an "outernational" take on the Shadows, and you're close.

  2. Cameroun Airline (Nik Weston Mukatsuku edit) (4:14)
Review: Momo Joseph didn't have a huge number of releases to his name back when he was a recording artist in the 80s, but that simply made his Love Africa Soul 7" even more of a holy grail find. Now Kalita have done the right thing and got hold of the release for a much needed repress, and it's highly likely this jam will become a staple for anyone with a taste for African grooves of all shapes and sizes. "Love Africa Soul" has it all - infectious brass stabs, limber musicianship, and Joseph's killer vocal. On the B side of this reissue "Cameroun Airline" gets a tasteful edit treatment from the trusted hands (and ears) of Nik Weston from Mukatsuku Records.

Review: Pioneering their very own 'psychedelic salsa' sub-genre, New York based collective La Mecanica Popular are in a league of their own. Fully live but clearly adept at layering their sounds for a polished studio finish, there's a rich trippiness running across both tracks thanks to some mesmerising weeping mandolin twangs and weaves of pert percussion. "La Paz Del Freak" is all about the carnival piano hook and big bold vocal harmonies while "Guajiro" is a much more free-spirited, jazz-inclined affair. Both are exceptional.

Review: Halloween may be over but that hasn't stopped New York psychedelic salsa troupe La Mecanica Popular getting busy with MJ's "Thriller". Giving it the Latin American dynamic and organic theatrics it never knew it needed, "Noche Triler" is one of the best cover versions Jacko's ever experienced. Flip for another example of salsa version science: "Montame En La Tormenta" takes "Riders On The Storm" and gives it a dust-kicking, guitar-twanging late night twist. Awesome.

Review: New wave cumbia and Afro-Latin vibes from La Misa Negra: a seven-piece band from Oakland, California. On stage, they deliver an electrifying performance that explodes with infectious dance grooves and punk rock energy, powered by horn and accordion-driven riffs, a fierce rhythm section and a vintage inspired sound. On the strength of their wild and unique shows, they have gained a reputation as one of the most exciting live bands to emerge from the Bay Area in recent years, garnering a diverse fan base that transcends musical, cultural, and generational divides. From the sweltering bossa vibes of "Me Voy Pa' Porce" to the scorching Afro-jazz of "Pistola" which is reminiscent of the legendary Cal Tjader - these guys are one to watch in 2018.

  1. Abrete Sesamo (5:17)
  2. Jipi Juarez (4:40)
Review: In the words of Chicagoan imprint Sonorama Discos, this two-track seven-inch singles boasts "hypnotic new tropical sounds from Mexico City". There's certainly something psychedelic and mind-altering about opener "Abrete Sesamo", which sees La Redada pepper a metallic rumba groove with wild Hammond organ solos, lo-fi synths and copious amounts of late '60s style tape hiss and funk fuzz. The band gets even wilder on the flipside, where the raucous "Jipi Juarez" joins the dots between boogaloo, heavy funk and kaleidoscopic psychedelia. The latter starts out as a heavy cut before ratcheting up the intensity throughout, largely via various percussion, guitar and saxophone solos. By the end you'll be gasping for air.

  2. La Pava Congona (Senor Sabor remix) (4:43)
Review: If there is one Cumbia specialist, it's Colombia's Andres Landero, a master of the accordion, and an artist who has left behind a huge musical dynasty since his passing in 2000. Originally out in 1975 on Discos Fuentes, "La Pava Congona" is reissued here by the industrious Vampi Soul label from Spain, and its hazy sway is an absolute delight in every way; organic percussion, Landero's voice and, of course, his accordion make this something of a South American gem for all sorts of listeners to enjoy. There's a SeNor Sabor remix on the flip; the groove is given more of a steely 4/4 pump, and we're happy to say that it is certainly more dance-friendly than the original.

Review: Last time we heard from Cleon and Jazzy Pidjay, otherwise known as Last Bongo In Paris, was back in 2013 on EDR...and here they are back on the same label, and out the bottom of a hat. Similarly to last time, "Bahia Swing" manages to conjure the right balance between jazz, funk and something a little more tropical, a sound and panache that is carried through to the following four cuts of juice. Our favourites are "Ritmo Loco" for its Latin energy, and the delightfully broken "Jarumba". If you're looking for something a little jazzy and saucy, but that pushes beyond the genre's natural confinements, this is it.

A deep trip up and down the amazon, hopping off as and when they see fit, the album sees them paying homage to Latin standards such as "Fruta Fresca" and "Manduco". Rebuilding them electronically with, no doubt, a fair few classic synths in the mix. From disco to blues with just a touch of Latin folk magic, it's yet another unique and vital trip from the Los Charly's Orchestra lads.

Review: Los Charly's Orchestra sorts Juan Laya and Jorge Montiel impressed earlier in the year with "Electropical", a set of sensuous re-imaginings of Latin standards in a synthesizer/drum machine style. This follow-up is equally as impressive. The sensual samba-boogie goodness of "Esta Musica", features the wonderful vocals of Andre Espeut, the delayed-laden Balearic-goes-Amazonian breeze of "Sabana", and the jazz-wise, percussion-rich brilliance of "Semana Santa En Achaguas". Elsewhere, Pete Herbert re-imagines "Sabana", a jaunty, synth-heavy chunk of Balearic nu-disco brilliance while Oyobi delivers a fine broken beat/synth-funk fusion version of "Vuelo Del Condor". Simply essential.
