Review: The cult favourite Dark Entries hits 15 in style here and celebrates in the only way it knows how - with more great music. This time it is the legendary synth-punk yahoos Crash Course in Science aka Dale Feliciello, Mallory Yago, and Michael Zodorozny who are in the spotlight. The group formed back in 1979 and set out to make music using toy instruments and kitchen appliances. Their punk-y, aggressive, angular sound soon found a hardcore fan base and gave rise to big tunes like 'Cardboard Lamb' and 'Flying Turns.' In 1981 they recorded Near Marineland, a full-length that never actually saw the light of day but does now and shows the band moving into more diverse and polished territory.

Review: LA based industrial trio HEALTH have had quite the curious trajectory from their confrontational noise-rock beginnings, to providing the acclaimed score to Max Payne 3, all the way to redefining themselves as a gritty, synth-metal behemoth on 2019's Vol 4: Slaves Of Fear. Following on from their lockdown-inspired two-part Disco 4 collaborative project which boasted cuts written in tandem with artists ranging from a multitude of differing sonic spheres, such as alternative hip-hop (JPEGMAFIA, Ghostemane) to hyperpop (100 Gecs) and even grindcore (Full Of Hell), their latest endeavour appears to be taking cues from both their more vicious experiments as well as their newfound collaborative ethos. With features from the likes of Godflesh and Willie Adler of Lamb Of God, whilst embracing both their metallic and techno-leaning indulgences simultaneously, Rat Wars promises to distil the myriad of components essential to the sonic makeup of HEALTH into one oppressive, melancholic, hellish, absorbing and vital collection.

Mostly active during the 1990s, the trio were instrumental in bringing robotic ideas to EU techno. This reissue of 'Cybernetics' is a big curio, with four new alternate takes on classic neuromantic cuts including 'Authentic' and 'Mechanic'. For those who like to sprinkle a bit of dystopianism into their DJ sets, this EP littered with sinister vocal samples scraped from future-facing TV documentaries abut cyborgs.

They've certainly made their machines sing on Arseholes, Liars & Electronic Pioneers, their third full length excursion. Review: Japanese industrial noise duo The Grogerigegege are something of an urban legend within the underground music scene. Apparently meeting at a sex club where a shared appreciation for envelope pushing sex acts, punishing aural sonics and a bizarre avant-garde perspective on art would lock them together for ensuing decades of musical mayhem. Known for incorporating nudity, violence, broken glass and hoovers into their live set, the pair would even take a lengthy respite while one of the members simply disappeared for years on end before reconnecting with his counterpart. As If It Had Always Been Determined Since This Day Was Born transports listeners back to the pair's earliest forays into calculated extremity with blown out, overdriven remixes taken directly from the master tapes of their first 7" single released back in 1988. This includes the long sought after remaster of 'Mistress' originally used in the legendary Enoshima Beach Flexi Burning Live (which the pair opted to burn all original pressings of rather than make readily available). You do have to remember these are the same lads who sold dried out octopus tentacles in cassette cases during one tour as a limited release, and smashed up the master recording of another work and put the broken pieces in a metallic box that the listener shook to hear the album, hence the title You Are The Music Maker. If the utter lunacy of The Grogerigegege isn't detailed enough here, well this pressing comes complete with 5500 word essay-style liner notes penned by 55 year old Gero himself (Juntaro Yamanouchi).

Review: Ministry have always enjoyed playing with album titles - 1989's The Mind Is A Terrible Thing To Taste being one of the best examples. They've also evolved from a synth pop outfit at the turn of that decade into one of the pre-eminent industrial rock and metal bands of the following ten years, a process that helps them stand out among a scene that became increasingly saturated as time progressed.
Never by-numbers, then, and always looking to experiment with effects, samples, and structure, on stage their reputation for being uncompromisingly Ministry precedes them, and here's at least some form of proof. Sphinctour (lol) is an 11 track album containing recordings from various live shows across the globe, each of which invokes the atmosphere and gargantuan power of the outfit in question, with the only real problem being the fact you probably weren't there to see these shows happen.

Review: Full of Hell join forces with Primitive Man for the new release Suffocating Hallucination, a collaborative record that is followed up by both bands touring. The music is controlled chaos with lots of harsh sonics and violent textures across the tracks which all drag you kicking and screaming through pure metal misery and torture. Walls of guitar noise, heavy doom and gloom atmospheres and plenty of distortion define this most abrasive of listens - which will no doubt be a joy to the ears of hardcore metal fans. What a monster of an album and a real showcase of sonic scuzzery.

Review: The sixth album from JK Flesh, Sewer Bait is a slo-mo, lo-fi, noise-inflected journey through the dirtier, grittier side of techno. The opening track, 'Soaked to the Skin' is a corroded, corrupted chugger - pulsing demonically, brushing against increasingly rougher textures, this is a track where everything is obscured yet each component comes together to create a groove that is intensely hypnotic. The titular track 'Sewerbait' feels more closely aligned to the industrial techno tradition - slamming drums meet searing synths to create a track that is powerfully alluring. The final track, 'Washed Up', is driven by a relentless, propulsive core - like an engine revving up, this track feels ready to take off. JK Flesh has a masterful skill for making the rough shine and highlighting the delicate amongst the rubble.

Review: A reissue campaign of Front 242 best work is currently underway, owing to their will to be recognised as among the pioneers of EBM (Electronic Body Music) as well as their incipient contributions to the scene at large. Released a full five years after their debut album Geography, in which industrial musics were still in their melting-pot period, the band's third LP Official Version was comparatively described as "helping to fully define industrial in the broadest sense of the term". As ever dealt with themes of military aggression, propaganda and authenticity by way of nine juddering, subversive forward-chugs.

Review: Minimal Wave present a reissue of Yoshifumi Niinuma's 1980 self-titled debut album, having already released his Automaticism and Plastic Love EP's previously. Produced in his Tokyo living room, Niinuma built his own synthesizers and speakers from scratch to create these 'intense proto-techno soundscapes.' A zeitgeist of early pioneering electronics, it runs the gamut from minimal synth ("A Worm"/"Automatic Type"), noisy industrial beats such as on "Temprament" or early electro sounds as heard on "Quick Starttype".

Review: BOOM! Our favourites, Cititrax, roll the third editions of Tracks out onto our shelves, and the results are unsurprisingly strong on this excellent various artists comp. It's a mixed bag of skills, as per usual, and the sounds are those of a new NYC, fuelled by a new sort of post-industrial sensibility. Amato Y Mariana open with the tight beats and groove of "Queires Bailar", followed closely by the ominous compositions of the EBM-flavoured "Montgat" from The Sixteen Steps. On the flip, His Dirty Secrets bleeps out some morphed acid on "Structures", and "Another Stranger" from Further Reductions churns out a slow, mild-mannered house experiment with its roots clearly planted in the coldest of waves. Sick.

Review: There's a delightfully celebratory feel about this debut volume of Cititrax Tracks, a new 12" series from Minimal Wave offshoot Cititrax. As beautifully presented as we've come to expect, Tracks Volume 1 boasts a quartet of dancefloor-ready smashers from a blend of new faces and label stalwarts. Amato (aka The Hacker) kicks things off with the glistening EBM funk of "Physique" - all restless synth refrains and pounding bottom end - before LIES affiliate Tsuzing go all dark, psychedelic and twisted on the thrillingly intense, acid-flecked "King of System". An-I go all DAF (with a touch of Front 242) on the fuzzy and dystopian stomper "Mutter", before Cititrax regulars Broken English Club delivers a storming chunk of industrial-tinged analogue funk ("Glass"). Bravo!

Review: It's been a delight to see Oliver Ho's Broken English Club project develop artistically over recent times, with some fine records for Jealous God and Veronica Vasicka's Cititrax label along the way. Suburban Hunting sees Ho deliver his debut Broken English Club album, featuring some 11 tracks of primitive electronics and cinematic pseudo techno cuts. Tunes like "Vacant", "Derelict", or "Scum" all share a loose techno framework, but the real aesthetic is much vaster than that, verging on remnants of post-punk, industrial and all that goodness and hybrid class that came out of the late 1980's. It's another fine addition to the sublime Cititrax discography, and we recommended it just as much as the previous numbers.

Review: If you like dense, challenging and austere industrial noise then read on: French sound curator and in situ artist Jerome Noetinger is a master of that who has proven himself over more than 30 albums. Sur Quelques Mondes Etranges is another one of his avant guard outings with electroacoustic designs at its core. The album is divided up into two sides of shorter tracks, then one 18-minute piece that takes up a whole side, and then one side of 21-second locked grooves for you to mix up however you see fit. The whole record was made in three days in a Hamburg studio and is a fine showcase of his ability to make palpable metal texture and real-world dirt out of sound waves.

Review: Big stadium sized synth wave stuff, those who are scared to tread anywhere near EDM and trance should be warned Minuit Machine are partial to a massive breakdown or two, or at least that's true of the original 'Don't Run From The Fire'. But none of that should be taken to mean there's anything distasteful here. It's actually very well-conceived stuff. Movie theme meets dance floor potential.
Not least on 'Lovers of the Night', which could easily be an anthem from a 2022 Lost Boys remake. Eerie, engaging, broken, trippy, and slightly sinister stuff that doesn't give up. Remix wise, things veer from the punchy uptempo big room techno-esque Rein version on the title number, to the more darkly hypnotic and - once you attune to the background harmony - quietly uplifting PARALLX take on 'Lovers of the Night', which take things close to Gatecrasher in 1999 at around 7AM territory.

Describable perhaps as 'dream noise', this album somehow straddles both the grating and the serene, quickly hopping between everything from industrial techno to glassy hell sounsdcapes.

Review: Sasu Ripatti continues to plunge into techno abstraction through his Hide Behind The Silence series. It's but one outlet for the seemingly constant stream of innovative sound emerging from the Finnish pioneer's studio, and on this fourth 10" he's offering up more compelling studies in noise, texture, rhythm and space. 'Death Of A Bassdrum' seems to take aim at techno by burying a 4/4 kick under a twitchy, uncomfortable bed of scuffs and scrapes, while 'Post-Mortem' diverts into space-building sonics where found sounds and artful reverb create a vibrant, three-dimensional space to explore with your mind's eye.

Review: Wearing 1980s synth pop influences on their sleeve, and sounding exactly like they belong on the mighty DFA, Brooklyn's Light Asylum were rightly praised at the time they put out their debut - and, to this date - only studio album, circa 2012. Critics noted that, at a time when dance-punk crossover was everywhere, driven by LCD Soundsystem and many of the acts frontman James Murphy signed to DFA, the New Yorkers manage to differentiate themselves from the pack in several ways.
