Review: Tolga Baklacioglu's releases may not be all that frequent, but when they do arrive they're always worth a listen. Your Secret Face is his first outing of 2018 and sees him join forces fast-rising Russian artist Dee Grinski. The latter's stylish - and heavily distorted - spoken word vocals can be heard on the EP's opening and closing tracks, with the latter - an 11-minute experimental epic that could feasibly soundtrack nuclear Armageddon - also benefitting from her drowsy, improvised singing. No doubt she contributed heavily to the EP's instrumental cuts, too, which are bleak, fuzzy and industrial in the best possible way.

  1. Daniele Brusaschetto - "Grigi Ma"
  2. Janksy Noise - "Black NIght" (feat Rifka)
  3. Human Larvae - "Ruined"
  4. Damaskin - "Apocalypse"
Review: 10 Germany seem to get it bang-on each and every time! For a label who has released the likes of Ancient Methods, Perc and Matthew Herbert, among other legends, we'd expect nothing less than the spectacular and this is exactly what we got with this latest collaborative effort by Italy's Daniele Brusachetto, Jansky Noise, Human Larvae and Damaskin. Brusachetto's "Grigi Ma" is weird and wonderful pop tune set against a backdrop of cavernous percussion rattles, while Janksy Noise's "Black Night" is a full-on drone monster. Over on the flip, "Ruined" by Human Larvae is a fuzzy, noise-fuelled scorcher, and "Apocalypse" sees Damaskin produce the EP's only shred of rigidity thanks to its consistent 4/4 kick...accompanied by some rather gnarly power electronics, of course.

Review: Brothers Fabio and Marco D'Arcangelo can trace their roots back to Rome's industrial techno revolution of the early 1990s, but are arguably best known for their frequent outings on Rephlex. This EP originally came out on Richard D James and Grant Wilson-Claridge's imprint way back in 1996, when they were still beginning their musical journey. It remains a blisteringly good six-tracker, with highlights including the raw, Aphex Twin-influenced "Somewhere in Time", the guttural, fuzz-drenched post-electro rhythms and Kraftwerk bleeps of "Diagram VII (Milk Mix)", and the pleasingly skuzzy industrial hip-hop of "Skrakt". Arguably best of all, though, is the shimmering "80s Mix" of "Diagram 7", which recasts the track as a melodic chunk of funk-fuelled electro.

  3. Analog Automatism (6:24)
  4. Lacquer Sequence (6:27)
Review: This debut single from Italy's Dark Division makes the plethora of other newcomers seem inexperienced by comparison. Little is known as to the exact identity of this artist, but this EP o the newly crowned Hidden Tapes will no doubt lead to a whole range of new and exciting material in the future. Sounding a but like Demdike Stare on a dub techno tip, the lead tune is a sharply stripped-back techno experiment with a constant buzz in its underbelly, and that's followed by the relatively more aggressive and glitch-friendly slant of "Collage Voltage". On the flip, "Analog Automatism" offers a full suite of noise thrashing and percussive filth, while "Lacquer Sequence" heads into a techno wormhole with no way out - a hollow, cavernous field of distortion wraps around twisted beats and dubwise echo trickery. A serious first release from Dark Division.

Review: Repitch are back everyone, look out! Ascion, D. Carbone and Shapednoise team up with longtime allies AnD on the final instalment of the Features series and it's as intense as you'd expect: not for the faint of heart! Five cuts of brutalist, bleak and greyscale modern industrial music that bears all the trademarks of each individual producer's sound. From harsh metallic textures and grating modular snarls to the most overdriven kick drums and sinister sci-fi atmospheres. Is this posse going out all guns blazing? You'd better believe it!

  1. Transfer #1
  2. Transfer #2
  3. Transfer #1 (Shifted remix)
Review: With each release Yves De May is slowly breaking away from his Sandwell District-alumni status. After releasing just the one remix (of Sawf) in 2012, Transfer is the enigmatic producer's second release this year after the Metrics EP for Opal Tapes. This 12" for Modal Analysis involves three Transitions, with the lapping waves of white noise in "Transition #1" surprisingly offering something soothing, not harsh and malicious. Like a wild beast stirred from a stupor, "Transition #2" grows into a solidified and rolling remake of the former, with skerricks of static buzz creating continuity between tracks. The third Transition takes up the entire B-side, and with drums seemingly inspired by Vatican Shadow or Regis, it's the EP's culminating track that fuses the best elements of each Transition into the one cohesive piece.

  1. FYI (JK Flesh remix) (4:27)
  2. Raw Food (Roly Porter remix) (5:28)
  3. Life Cycle (Konx-Om-Pax remix) (5:57)
Review: Dead Fader is the alias of one John Cohen, here with a set of remixes of his forthcoming Jenny153 LP on Milanese imprint Parachute. Across nine tracks, it bridged the gap between classical and club music structures, while examining the crossover points between the two disciplines. According to Cohen, his work deals with themes of acceptance and an 'opening up' emotionally. The recordings presented a viewpoint of the potential space that exists on the outer limits of dance music. Here come some stellar remixes from the LP by the current who's who of industrial edged techno music. Birmingham legend Justin Broadrick aka JK Flesh delivers an abrasive and slow burning rendition of "FYI" showcasing his trademark guttural sound. The inimitable Roly Porter of Subtext fame delivers a cinematic and suspense filled sound design epic on "Raw Food" and Scottish beatsmith Kon-Om-Pax (Planet Mu/LuckyMe) serves up some lush and evocative futurism on his rendition of "Life Cycle".

Review: Tomas More returns, following up that greta release for Jealous God earlier this year. The Frenchman presents more savage post punk re-interpretations on the Bright Red EP, as heard on the grinding and guttural lo-fi antics of "2". On the flip, the low fidelity, smacked out EBM pulsations of "Park 1" call to mind Back & Forth era Skinny Puppy. Finally, your violent descent into the abyss is imminent on a track quite fittingly titled "The Pit" with its siren like synth squeals, unsettling machine noise and pounding drums supporting More's wailing vocals that swim in layers of delay and distortion.

  1. 40 Years Under The Cosh

Review: Sean Canty and Miles Whittaker make a swift return to the Testpressing series with a sixth installment arriving just a month after the excellent TP#5. The superbly titled "40 Years Under The Cosh" finds the Demdike pair wedged in the punishing crawlspace between Detroit Techno and vintage grime for six thrilling mind bending minutes, with the track gradually falling apart at the seams as the middle of the track draws close. Fans of both Pharrell Williams and Demdike Stare (there must be one or two) will probably express disappointment that "Frontin" isn't a cover of the big hatted fella's noughties hit; instead it's a brutal exercise in lurching industrial wave that will fry the brain cells of unsuspecting individuals.

Review: Following two years spent hiding in the shadows, audio hacker Denial of Service returns to Film with another selection of raw, mind-altering gems. He begins with the thrillingly distorted, industrial electro bounce of "Contour & Shape (2016 Version)", before joining the dots between Autehcre and Throbbing Gristle on "Ak Manto". A quick bout of mutant ambient weirdness follows, before grandiose techno workout "Onryo" kicks off side B with a bang. His love of metallic, in-your-face percussion, spooky spoken word samples and ghostly textures comes to the fore on "Goryo", before another brilliantly strange sound collage - with, it should be noted, its own rhythmic pulse - rounds off an impressively forthright EP.

  2. Aurat (tool) (2:33)
  3. The Saviour On Spoiled Blood (4:25)
Review: Formerly working as Kate Wax, primarily for Mental Groove, Aisha Devi debuts on Houndstooth having overseen the rise of the excellent Danse Noire label. This new EP from Devi is about 'sluts, awareness, death', but also makes nods to her grandmother who passed away recently. On "Aurat (tool)", the mood is mournful and melancholic as a female vocal is covered in fragile synths, while a similar mood prevails on "The Saviour on Spilled Blood". There, a powerful bass rumbles and throbs underneath shiny, sublime melodies and eerie, almost alien-like vocal tones. However, as its title suggests, there is also a more abrasive side to Devi's approach, and this is most notable on "Kim & The Wheel of Life". There, pounding industrial breaks are mixed with tortured, high pitched Middle Eastern wails for an expression of girl power that makes most militant feminism lame by comparison.

  4. Work Terminal (Metro Tekno version) (6:31)
Review: Digital Poodle are one of those outfits from the 1980's who happened to stumble onto techno by accident, focusing on making deadly, driving songs rather than fitting into a genre or style. Alongside them there are the likes of Psychik Warriors Ov Goia and a few others, but this stuff is pretty damn hard to come by, and releases like this are few and far between. The impressive Suction label out of Canada has decided to reissue their "Work Terminal" tune - a screeching, venomous bit of screamo EBM - backed by a trio of remixes. OH transform "Work Terminal" into a more direct techno bullet with subtle swarms of the original's screams, while Solvent give it a more aggressive reshape a-la electro. It's the Metro Tekno version that gets our attention, though, and those heavy percussion patterns must surely be total winners on the sound system.

Review: The charmingly named FuckPunk is the new endeavour from Young Echo members Vessel and Ossia, "instigated by a slap round the head from the old man, and a firm squeeze of the bum by the ancient grandma, yelling - 'Get off your ass and stop making vanilla music, it's time to sort your shit out and get real'." The pair inaugurate proceedings with a record under the DJ Ape and DJ Oa$is with a rather grotty homage to that most famous of dancehall riddims, Sleng Teng. This being a Young Echo thing, don't expect straight up covers but brutalised renditions of the riddim that will push the system well into the red at points. Locked groove included! And keep em locked for future Fuck Punk releases from the unheralded Bob X, records from MX/LX, Giant Swan and The Bots, and a release that sees Vessel on one release together with Ike Yard's Stuart Argabright and noise musician Pete Swanson.

Review: Once every three or four years, Kassem Mosse drops a new record under a new alias. We've loved the producer's mystique, which he has retained since day 1, because it is representative of a true artist and musician, evolving new ideas while remaining grounded in a particular aesthetic that is personal to him. This debut DJ Residue 12" drops on Will Bankhead's TTT, whom he has kept tight relations with over the years, and has hit us pretty hard. In fact, it is the most relevant depiction of techno, or general warehouse music, that we have heard this year, shifting and morphing endlessly, going from the regular to the utterly insane with pure ease. Sludgy beats, eerie atmospherics, and Mosse's intricate percussion patterns form a beautifully dark variety of noise music. Recommended, as per usual.
