Love Is Still Alive
Cat: CDMUTE 653. Rel: 20 Jan 23
Love Is Still Alive I: Moon, Euphoria
Love Is Still Alive II: Venus, Libidine
Love Is Still Alive III: Mercury, Dopamine

Love Is Still Alive VI: Saturn, Insomnia
Love Is Still Alive VII: Jupiter, Tristitia
Love Is Still Alive VIII: Mars, Dysphoria
Review: Ever-changing Slovenian collective Laibach seems to have mellowed with age, with the band's inherent desire to court controversy (see their 2015 performances in North Korea for a relatively recently example) currently curtailed. Love Is Still Alive, which marks their first new music since the release of last year's well-received album Wir Sind das Volk, is actually an "extension" of the music they wrote to soundtrack the 2019 film 'Iron Sky -The Coming Race'. It is, they say, a "trip through space music genres of recent decades" (albeit with bonus nods to country, pop and so on) that loosely tells the story of a spaceship full of post-apocalyptic survivors making their way across the solar system. It's a lot of fun, all told, with the band expertly showcasing the breadth of their musical knowledge as well as skip-fulls of imagination.

Review: The Cabaret Voltaire resurgence continues, not that Richard H. Kirk's groundbreaking electronic project every went away in the eyes and ears of disciples. Nevertheless, 2020's Shadow of Fear album was his first in 26 years under the celebrated moniker (now a solo show), and so it's no wonder people are lapping up every wave and ripple that record created.

Enter BN9Drone, the latest offspring to arrive after the long form, and a release that may or may not be inspired by a drone flying over the BN9 postcode in Brighton, UK. If that was the catalyst, we want to know the make and model of the drone, because it certainly makes some pretty out-there noises. Opening on what sounds like aural evidence there is life up there in the stars, it's classic Cab Vol art-as-noise, noise-as-art, atmospheric stuff, so let's leave it at that.

Track 1
Review: There have always been two distinct threads to Richard H Kirk's work as Cabaret Voltaire, with or without his former collaborators Chris Watson and Stephen Mallinder. There's the clanking, moody industrial funk that marked out the band's work in the 1980s - brilliantly resurrected on last year's Kirk-only set Shadow of Fear - and even more clandestine, beat-free releases that explore the more paranoid end of the ambient and experimental electronica spectrum. BN9Drone, Kirk's second Cabs LP of 2021, swims in these murky waters, with the veteran Sheffield producer layering up dark, foreboding chords, gravelly electronic textures, droning noise and Robin Rimbaud style snippets of overheard telephone conversations and police radio chatter. It's unsettling at times but also utterly captivating, as if you're listening to a distant disaster unfold in real time.

Review: With Christmas fast approaching, Throbbing Gristle founder member Chris Carter has decided to offer up the perfect stocking filler for industrial and experimental electronica enthusiasts: a limited coloured 6xLP retrospective focusing on the early part of his solo career. While it omits his 1980 debut "The Space Between", it does include expanded, re-mastered versions of 1985's surprisingly ambient "Mondo B", 1998's trippy, hypnotic and rhythmical "Disobedient Redux" and 1999's brilliant "Small Moon Redux". Even more excitingly, one of the box's LPs is the most experimental, out-there and inspired of all, as it is made up entirely of previously unreleased tracks recorded between 1973 and 77. In truth, this LP is worth the entrance price on its own.

Review: Trailed as a direct sequel to his previous solo album, 2017's "Avanti", "Volume Massimo" sees Nine Inch Nails member Alessandro Cortini offer up another immersive trip through droning guitar textures, repetitive synthesizer motifs, exotic sitar parts and fuzzy electronics. It's effectively a series of "maximal" instrumental soundscapes with sounds so large and layered they rise above the "meditative" tag pushed by Mute's PR team. This is no criticism, though, just a reflection that while contemplative at times, one of the most joyous things about the album is Cortini's ability to build thrilling walls of sound.

Review: Detroit's legendary Terrence Fixer is a master minimalist who manages to make superbly supple techno laden with emotion, colour and cosmic charm. His Shifting Signals album marks a debut LP on Mute that finds him firing up his machines and once again speak a unique techno language through them. The early single 'Corne de Brume' is a hard-hitting piece that sets a fine tone for the album with sawtooth synths and ear-piercing melodies that are impossible to ignore. The rest of the tracks add up to a white knuckle ride through techno futurism.

Review: Scope Neglect is a first new full length album from celebrated Iceland-based Australian composer Ben Frost in six years. Fans will know and newcomers should get to know that his brand of music is as influenced by classical minimalism as it is by sounds like punk rock and metal. He undergoes something of an evolution this record though as "the familiar aural chemistry of metal is immediately untethered" with Car Bomb's guitarist Greg Kubacki and Liam Andrews, bassist in My Disco, both adding their own distinctive powers. The rest is another engaging and intriguing electronic work.

Unreal In The Eyes Of The Dead
Review: While Ben Frost's work has long been marked out by deft-touch dark ambient, experimental instincts and clandestine aural textures, he's always thrown in surprise excursions and drawn on musical inspirations that other like-minded producers would fear to embrace. This latter characteristic comes to the fore on Scope Neglect, his first solo set for six years. Remarkably, it utilises the moodiness, weight and ten-ton guitar licks of metal - played by Car Bombs guitarist Greg Kubacki and bass-slinger Liam Andrews of My Disco fame - as a starting point. Frost naturally puts these through the sonic wringer, combining them with his own skittish, IDM-influenced beats, dark ambient soundscapes and razor-sharp electronics. The results are unusual, impressive and emphatically enjoyable, sitting somewhere between timeless electronica, Nine Inch Nails and experimental metal.

Review: Forged in the darkness that exists beyond shadows, Scope Neglect opens up a new chapter in the storied career of cult producer, musician, and artist Ben Frost. A record of almost-unfathomable ferocity, taking inspiration from the blackness of industrial and metal, core elements of these scenes are untethered, taking us to a stylistic unknown - abstract, brooding and unflinching. Seven years after his last LP, at which point he told The Guardian 'I don't know if I have any more records left in me', the enigmatic polymath - a celebrated underground icon whose work spans film, visual art, and opera - proves his own doubts were unfounded. Scope Neglect is a spectacular powerhouse of sound that feels made for spaces bigger than any room, hall, or stadium. Left unrestricted, it could be capable of reaching the ends of the universe itself.

Review: Throbbing Gristle's second studio album is an essential work that conjures some of the most harsh and nauseating music you can imagine (not a surprise given "Hamburger Lady" is a piece about a patient burned from the waist up and forever contained in a hospital). It was pioneering in texture and technique, and mixes both live and studio recordings into one of the band's most stylistically varied works. Creeping and haunting, confrontational and challenging from front to back, the spoken word samples from children and mutated voices will probably haunt your dreams forever, so listen with caution.

Review: When Throbbing Gristle performed live at Camber Sands in December 2004, it was an emotional occasion. All four members had reunited for only the second time since 1981 in order to pay tribute to their dear friend and fellow industrial pioneer John Balance. The resulting performance was electric, with the legendary four-piece putting on a dazzling show of doom-laden industrial magic that is still talked about in hushed tones to this day. This double-vinyl set, which was previously only available as a limited CD-R release in the days following the performance, presents the 90-minute show in full. It's arguably one of the band's strongest live recordings and feels particularly potent given the circumstances leading up to it.

Review: When it was first released in 2007, "Part 2: The Endless Not / TG Now" was Throbbing Gristle's first studio album since 1982. The pioneering industrial band had been drawn together again in 2004 to mark the passing of friend John Balance with a rare performance, and spent the next two years sporadically recording new material. The set was produced slightly differently to the all-analogue early works, with greater use of sampling and digital instrumentation. Yet despite the new toys and techniques, the music remained as antagonistic, forthright, intense and otherworldly as it had been two decades before. In other words, it's a proper Throbbing Gristle album, made by the original members to their original ethos, with a slightly different production approach. For that reason it remains a must-have for all fans of industrial music past and present.
