Review: 'Mordechai is another blissed-out record from Texan party-chill-psyche trio Khruangbin. It's also among the outfit's most defined and driven, a smooth, sticky hot funk odyssey made for hazy afternoon soirees. Leader Laura Lee is, as ever, unfathomably siren-like on vocals, her bass grooves aiding the process of seduction no end. Even at the most upbeat and anthemic, 'Time (You and I)', it's hard not to feel woozy and intoxicated by the pared-back breaks and guitar lick combination. Dance floor ammo for sure, as is Pelota. Overall, though, it's an album best savoured slowly, allowing you to fully appreciate every lackadaisical moment of opiate goodness, with tracks such as 'Father Bird, Mother Bird', 'One To Remember' and 'Shida' summoning stunning sticky, heavy, deep atmospheres.

Review: Long destined for greatness, if whatever god you do or don't believe in doesn't bestow upon Moses Sumney's household name longevity then it's simply because he refuses to play by the rules of the music system. Experimental in the true sense - he loves to see what can be done with what we are already used to - in a world that's well accustomed to soul-jazz-electronica-R&B hybrids Sumney still stands out as one of the few capable of real magic. Opening on 'Cut Me', not discounting the wonderful tune up intro just before, it's hard to remember more of an effective display of pop perfection and heartfelt songwriting in a leftfield artist since Jamie Lidell delivered 'Multiply'. 'Grae' is a very different beast made for a very different and more complex time, though, embracing a swathe of elements from icy darkwave to acoustic balladry and even opera as it runs its course. Phenomenal.

Review: Paul Buchanan and The Blue High have never been known for letting standards slip. This, their first full length album in eight years and only the fourth in the last 21, more than meets the benchmarks set in previous outings, both in terms of songwriting and arrangement, proving beyond doubt that pop is less of a dirty word, and more a misunderstood mishmash of sound running from throwaway trash to universally resonant masterpieces. Take 'Broken Loves' for example, which shows a band that's more than capable of taking relatively mundane observations and rendering them emotionally powerful through suggestion and implication - in this case a relationship collapsing before the eyes of each partner, with neither knowing what to do, visualised in the way one party is more interested in watching TV than listening to the other. Way back in 1984, this outfit made a major impact with youthful romantic vibrance, the same is not true today, with more than an air of world weary heartbreak about their work, and in many ways it's more impactful than ever.

Review: Considering the whole idea behind this album was to try and break free from the restrictive parameters of songwriting structure in its traditional sense, Christopher Bear - AKA Fools, AKA Grizzly Bear's drummer and multi-instrumental maestro - has actually created something that feels incredibly tight and precisely executed. Not exactly the expected results from a nine-week improvisation session that focused on finding out what might come from what. During that time, Bear would record jam sessions on one instrument before experimenting over the top with another, often driven by a desire to create a sonic response to the original sounds. Perhaps not so fast and loose, then, but instead following a clear and concise idea, nevertheless what we're offered is a collection of beguiling, dreamy pieces unbound in genre terms but defined by lush, exotic downtempo journeys.

Review: Considering it was only last year when Sleaford Mods dropped their prized UK Top 10 LP 'Eton Alive' it's almost jarring they should now unveil a Best Of, of sorts. It's hardly time to reflect when you're one of the most vital acts in contemporary British pop. But then the record stands up on its own merit, too, more than living up to the name by offering an insight into the ties - or rather tracks - that bind together the outfit's seven year career to date. Those familiar with the work of Jason Williamson and Andrew Fearn will not be surprised to learn the contents here are visceral, heartfelt, stubborn, angry, and stood with tongue firmly in cheek. Observations from an island still riddled with inequality and led by donkeys, set to the kind of catchy but raw guitar, sequencer and drum work that can't help but take you for a ride.

Review: There's so much to talk about with any instalment in the Phoebe Bridgers saga, and her latest is no exception whatsoever. A voice that has slowly garnered a seriously strong following, winning her the label of 'cult superstar' from some critics, she hits us with another series of knockout emotional bodyblows here, delivered through heartfelt sincerity and conversational lyrics. At times opting for a grunge-y, garage rock feel ('Kyoto'), in other moments taking on a far more sombre and broken air ('Moon Song' is enough to crush anyone in earshot), no matter how striking and effective the sounds are her words are what really elevates Bridgers above many peers in the alt-songwriting scene. If that's even really a thing. Digressions aside, it's hard to describe just how adept she is at hitting nail on head with turns of phrases and observations. They move past us leaving what appears to be a flesh wound when we've actually been cut to the core. Stunning.

Review: From a cover image wonderfully displaying the proportional difference between humans and the world we call home, to the expansive pedal steel guitar chords that weep their way through the musical destinations here, Raymond Richards encapsulates the vast openness of the US in sound, offering aural interpretations of the beauty and desolation, hope and devastation this wildly rich but painfully unequal country is home to. Track titles are inspired by real pins on the map, although it's unlikely you'll recognise many - we're talking 'Paradise, California' (a swooning, sun-kissed closing overture), 'Astoria, Oregon' (a lilting, vast but quiet slice of ambient) and 'Roslyn, Washington' (which sounds like psychedelic country) rather than more obvious places like Los Angeles, where Richards stomped about with the likes of DJ Lovefingers and Slowdive affiliates Mojave 3 in the late-1990s.

Review: There's certainly plenty to talk about here. British chart-topping and stadium-filling enigmas The 1975 return to prove you really can't predict what the troupe will do next, delivering what would be their most divisive and explorative album if it weren't for the fact they command so much loyalty from fans you could be forgiven for thinking dark forces were at play. 'Notes On A Conditional Form' is easily the furthest we've wandered from the formative years of a band that cut teeth doing teen-punk covers, and it's hard not to notice the subtle theme here. From 'Having No Head', which rides on a sharp house groove, through the garage breaks of 'Yeah I Know', low slung dub of 'Shiny Collarbone' and the shoegaze of 'Streaming', it plays out like a celebration of the breadth and diversity of UK pop culture.

Review: A decade has passed since The National made their commercial breakthrough with fifth album, "High Violet", a set which many critics still believe is the Ohio-based band's finest full-length to date. To celebrate the anniversary, the band's label 4AD has decided to press it on vinyl for the very first time, packaging the marbled purple and white vinyl in a triple-gatefold sleeve. It's an awesome package, but what will excite fans most is the third slab of wax. This features a mixture of rare, hard-to-find and previously unreleased material from the period, including a trio of live recordings, the near-mythical "Wake Up Your Saints" and "Walk Off", and a fine alternate mix of "Terrible Love".

Review: Here's something you don't come across that often: a "live" album that captures straight-to-tape (literally) studio recordings rather than a performance in front of the paying public. In Parcels defence, the results are impressive, in part because their chosen location, legendary Berlin institution Hansa Studios, boasts the kind of analogue recording and mixing equipment that neatly fits their warm, mixed-up trademark sound (think West Coast rock, blue-eyed soul, funk-ruck fusion). Many of the songs segue into each other as they would during a live performance, with new interludes and previously unheard songs adding a frisson of disco-fired dancefloor goodness to proceedings. It might not be a pure live album, but it's a hugely enjoyable listen.

Review: When Charlatans frontman Tim Burgess dropped 'Empathy For The Devil' back in February it burst onto playlists like the scorching sunshine it sounds like. A jaunty, carefree slice of summer pop, complete with proclamations of "What will be will be", it marked the return of a Britpop hero who is one of the era's most talented, likeable and consistent - his work after those heady days has remained highly original and varied. Those looking for more of the same on this, his fourth solo album, will be pleased to know it's hardly lacking in good vibes. 'Sweetheart Mercury' follows the aforementioned single and album opener, and it's equally sublime and bouncy. In fact, anyone looking for something subdued must wait for 'Undertow' and its piano and vocal build, which is still a track of strength rather than vulnerability. Packing a powerful punch while never failing to explore new ideas, it's exquisite, timeless and essential.

Review: Where would you be without Mark Lanegan? Where would any of us be without Mark Lanegan? Scratch and don't answer that - responses probably depend on personal experiences. Nevertheless, the man once most commonly known as the guy from Screaming Trees is nothing short of vital - incredible songwriter and top drawer musician, with his second album in under six months more than enough evidence to back those claims. In many ways 'Straight Songs Of Sorrow' is an amalgamation of all the artist has done and been before solo, which is saying something given this is studio LP number 12. Lyrically a testament to some of his darkest hours gone by, elements of early, rawer outings are more than audible, with lashings of the synth stuff that has typified later material acting as a counterbalance. Delicate acoustic and string workouts, shades of DNTEL, twisted organ cries and soul searching, dark, alternative rock moods.

Review: It's always exciting when some of your favourite artists announce a new musical project. Clearly, then, we were pretty excited about Muzz. Featuring Interpol's Paul Banks, Josh '1/3 of Bonny Light Horseman' Kaufman and Matt Barrick (see: The Walkmen, Fleet Foxes touring band), if the total is equal to the sum of those parts then we should be in for a treat. Not a let down in earshot, all 12 tracks are immediately enthralling. 'Evergreen' and its sombre, reflective guitar strokes combined with subtle electronic effects. The massive, scuzzy rock 'n' roll of 'Knuckleduster'. The heart-wrenching crooning of 'All Is Dead To Me'. A work of many layers, it's a soulful and immersive thing packed with an incredible amount of feeling, and made possible by an incredible level of talent.

Review: You'll probably struggle to find an album that opens with two more contrasting tracks than the fifth long form effort from Mike Hadreas. Re-teaming with GRAMMY-nominated production talent Blake Mills, with the pair inviting a host of guest collaborators to help on this record (Jim Keltner, Pino Palladino to name but two), the record begins with the peaceful, reflective and hymn-like 'Whole Life', a classic slice of rock croonerdom, before the scuzzy guitars of 'Describe' drop in like juggernauts. Elsewhere, you have the proto-pop of 'On The Floor', a track heyday Cyndi Lauper would have been happy to call her own, and the haunting slow dance of 'One More Try', offering yet more shades of grey which, combined, create a complete picture of a man, or indeed men, in the 21st Century. Rebellious, tender, caring, carefree and deeply complex. Definitely one that will keep you exploring long after first pressing play.

Review: There's a hushed wind blowing through the debut album from London songwriter Will Westerman, but that shouldn't be taken to mean the tracks lack big ideas. Ideas that, thankfully, the young artist seems more than capable of realising with dazzling art rock and pop strokes, making those references to Peter Gabriel in the promo material perfectly understandable. Only time will tell, but on first impact this is exactly the kind of polished but politically charged stuff we need in the world today. Easy to hear but resolute in its determination to consider new possibilities, playing with tempos, times and traditional arrangements to ensure the slow jams, alt-ballads and synth-fuelled serenades are infinitely re-playable and remarkably memorable pre-requisites for any long-lasting success story. One for your list, for sure.

Review: Re-grouped and, if the introductory stomp here is much to go by, re-charged, Manchester's PINS return with a generous helping of sound clash business, melding filthy electro sleaze and playful rock with two deft and confident hands, the results of which should score big with fans of seductive disco sludge. And let's face it that's pretty much most of us. Tracks like 'Read My Lips' and 'Bad Habit' are fine examples of a dark but alluring edge this lot seem more than capable of creating, while 'Daisies' could almost replace Wilson Phillips to score the final scene of 'Bridesmaids'. Which is certainly no bad thing. "We can keep going" the band threaten over 'Ghosting''s compressed but intense rave punk. Based on this, we're more than happy with that idea.
