The Collective follows Gordon's 2019 full-length debut No Home Record, and continues her collaboration with producer Justin Raisen, with additional production from Anthony Paul Lopez. An full-length exploration and lament, of today's paranoid climate of binge logic, anaesthetic short-term pleasure-seeking and post-truth thinking, The Collective is Gordon's self-described attempt at disruption; a following of the unknown, perhaps even with a view to fail. Review: 30 years on, Slanted & Enchanted hasn't lost any of its power and potency. Stephen Malkmus formed Pavement in 1989 but it took a few years to get their debut album down. It marked their move from Drag City to Matador, and its wide circulation ahead of release built up the anticipation and ensured Pavement arrived with a splash. Comparisons and the The Fall and Swell Maps aren't without merit, but with the passing of time they become stretched given how influential Malkmus and co. wound up being on the explosion of indie rock in the 90s. Quite simply a perfect record, lovingly repressed for your listening pleasure.

Review: You'll probably struggle to find an album that opens with two more contrasting tracks than the fifth long form effort from Mike Hadreas. Re-teaming with GRAMMY-nominated production talent Blake Mills, with the pair inviting a host of guest collaborators to help on this record (Jim Keltner, Pino Palladino to name but two), the record begins with the peaceful, reflective and hymn-like 'Whole Life', a classic slice of rock croonerdom, before the scuzzy guitars of 'Describe' drop in like juggernauts. Elsewhere, you have the proto-pop of 'On The Floor', a track heyday Cyndi Lauper would have been happy to call her own, and the haunting slow dance of 'One More Try', offering yet more shades of grey which, combined, create a complete picture of a man, or indeed men, in the 21st Century. Rebellious, tender, caring, carefree and deeply complex. Definitely one that will keep you exploring long after first pressing play.

Review: Adorning his long hair on the cover, Kurt Vile returns with his seventh solo album Bottle It In which has the charm of a rare, golden find inside of a dusty Seattle record store. At 13 tracks long, interestingly enough three clock in at an epic 10 minutes long. It's an album that graces various themes of dark psyche within dreamy soundscapes of crackles and feedback underneath an ensemble of roomy drums, finger-picking guitars and other folky sentimentalities. There's mellifluous flow to the record, with the hip lyrical content of "Cold Was The Wind" a highlight and stand out alongside the washed out beach blues of "Skinny Mini" and unique album closer "(Bottle Back)".

Review: Julien Baker's debut 'Sprained Ankle' garnered critical acclaim on its release last year for its impressive writing. Considering Baker's age, at only 22 years old she's already creating worlds of stunning dream-pop with a craftsmanship that could stir envy in more experienced songwriters. 'Turn Out The Lights' showcases her talent even further, exploring a melancholy world against a backdrop of sparse echoing instrumentation. The moments of subtle intensity are striking, such as the album's cinematic opening 'Over', whose stirring strings and sparse piano pour seamlessly into the next track 'Appointments. Baker's voice is controlled and her harmonies are arresting, and she uses expansive vocal layering to build intensity, pulling back just before it overbears the listener. Review: Produced with the help of Flaming Lips and Mercury Rev producer Dave Fridmann, Interpol's iconic sound returns, a whopping 16 years after their acclaimed debut, Turn on the Bright Lights, and four years since their last: El Pintor. Guitars still twang and sparkle with spine tingling reverberation and the melancholy of Paul Banks vocals remains everlasting. Review: 'There's A Riot Going On', the fifteenth album from New Jerseyan indie rockers Yo La Tengo, started life in 2015 as a mesh of home recordings, new material and previously unused material from other projects such as their film score work. The effect of this long gestation is audible, it's a sort of kaleidoscopic patchwork of psychedelic soundscapes and calm, warm alt-indie songs that meld together seamlessly (think a slightly more out-there version of fellow Garden State natives Real Estate). The second half of the album is punctuated by more unusual moments, the percussive pseudo-jazz jam of 'Above The Sound', bossa-nova instrumental interlude 'Esportes Casual', and the horizontal ambient doo-wop of 'Forever', amongst others. Nevertheless, the strength of 'There's A Riot Going On' lies in how well it all fits together, whilst quietly showcasing how deft YLT's songwriting hand is.

Review: The work of Mike Hadreas has divided opinion up until this point, with observers being equally awestruck by his ornate and grandiose pop and slightly overwhelmed by it - however, 'No Shape' would appear to be the point at which all must acknowledge that this maverick is now operating at the absolute peak of his powers, and sculpting works of cinematic splendour that balance out tenderness of delivery and gloriously widescreen sweep. Lush orchestration marries with Hadreas' emotionally engaging croon and endlessly inventive arrangements to arrive at something both touching and transcendent.

Review: Will Toledo has quickly made his presence felt as a witty, playful yet poignant chronicler of the disenfranchised, and this first full-lengther for Matador - following the earlier re-released 'Teens Of Style' - displays a rare ability to combine indelible songwriting chops with ornery attitude and a pleasing sense of the ridiculousness of one's youth. Review: The Philadelphia troubadour is on typically dazed and understated form on this sixth solo effort, yet does nothing to dissuade all or any observers from crowning him the modern king of slacker introspection. A singer-songwriter in the most old-fashioned and engaging of ways, his earthy craft is showcased in a collection of songs that veer engagingly from paranoia to overconfidence, and from wry cynicism to cheerful optimism, Strangest of all however, for all the nods to the likes of Dylan and Lennon stylistically, Vile never sounds like an artist beholden to retro fetishism, more one whose melodic skills and heavy-lidded charm captivate on their own terms, all the while cloaked in his trademark narcotic mid-afternoon haze of a sound.

Review: When the world seems like it's coming apart at the seams, you can always rely on Belle & Sebastian to lift your spirits. It may have been a while since we last heard from the long-serving Glaswegian combo - A Bit of Previous, their tenth album, is also their first for seven years - but the old magic still remains. While the lyrics deal with all manner of subjects - not least the march of time and the weight of their own musical history - the accompanying music is largely triumphantly cheery, or at the very least the sonic equivalent of Prozac. As a result, standouts are plentiful, with our picks including the glassy-eyed, gospel-tinged Americana-soul fusion of 'If They're Shooting at You', the pedal steel-sporting indie-pop breeze of 'Young and Stupid' and the fuzzy, low-slung, post-punk/indie-pop fusion of 'Unnecessary Drama'.

Review: It's Lindsey Jordan's second album under the Snail Mail guise. And, just like the namesake service, it's not rushed, at times feels a little unpredictable, and has an air of familiarity that's bound to put listeners at ease. Not that the immediately inviting, often-sweet soft rock instrumentation should be taken at face value. Valentine is an ode to love in a multitude of definitions, but the vast majority of them are in dire need of a little TLC. Not broken, just unkept and taken for granted.

Review: It's been a rough old ride leading up to In Times New Roman for Queens of the Stone Age frontman Joshua Homme. Private life very much splashed across the front pages (of the music press, at least) amid custodial battles with ex-wives, cancer diagnoses and surgery, the loss of several close friends, including former Queens and latterly solo legend Mark Lanegan. As such we can understand why this latest album is an unforgiving and at times surprisingly edgy place to be.

For the most part, In Times is their heaviest sounding outing in more than 15 years, essentially since Era Vulgaris dropped.
