Review: The Fall's tenth album, like pretty much all the others, was met with a mixed critical response, but as well as containing one of the band's only two Top 40 UK singles - their cover of 'Victoria' by The Kinks, executed with a sideways swipe at the Victorian values of the Thatcher-led Tory government of the time - it's also got a stack of tracks that have grown to be Fall fan favourites. 'Carry Bag Man', autobiographical in a pretty loose sense, is compulsive and hilarious. The tight and taut glam stomp meet Krautrock drive of 'Bremen Nacht', complete with scraping violins and honking saxes, is about as good as the band gets in this particularly purple patch of their lengthy career. 'Athlete Cured' , as well as containing the priceless line "an odour resembling hot dogs / permeated his whole room", is all rockabilly aggression re-routed through synth drums and Moog washes, is essential Fall too.
As if that weren't enough, this re-issue package comes with a whole host of additional delights, including their biggest hit 'Ghost In My House', the electro hybrid anthem 'Hit The North', four radio session tracks, and their cover of The Beatles' 'Day In The Life', previously only available on an NME charity album. Far from being a Fall completist's dream - they will probably have everything on here anyway - this is actually a brilliant place to start discovering one of the most important and delight-inducing bands of the past half decade.

Review: There really is no-one like Mark E. Smith - eternal iconoclast, genius savant and relentless plougher of his own unique and demented furrow for forty odd years now, in which he's committed a frankly terrifying thirty-two albums to posterity. 'New Facts Emerge' is the latest transmission from his twisted and relentlessly perverse alternate universe, and it defies logic or reason to stand proud as one of his most gritty and vital works of the century so far. Gnarled and purgatorial, it sees Smith's voice at its most feral and aggressive against a barbaric backdrop of incisive riffage. The great man may increasingly physically resemble one of the Germans at the end of Raiders Of The Lost Ark, yet 'New Facts Emerge' is proof that you write this potent malcontent off at your peril.

Review: In so many ways, "Making A New World" has been an age coming. A full century, in fact. The seventh album from Peter and David Brewis' rightly lauded outfit is their most ambitious, with the talented craftsmen forsaking the contemporaneous commentary present throughout much of their oeuvre in favour of adopting the position of historic documenters. Confused? No worries, let's cut to the kind of direct chase suited to their North East English roots. A highly political work, the record attempts to explain the shocking state of today's planet - and civilisation - by tracing problems back to World War I. And it makes a big impression in doing so. Opening with the field recording-esque "Sound Ranging", and then the startlingly tender piano solo "Silence/After The Fact", it's not long before the art-pop-prog starts to properly unfold, spanning a fittingly huge 19 tracks to close on the sinister-sounding and resoundingly unsettling "An Independent State". Marvellous stuff.

Review: The Flaming Lips didn't really find new noise and drone trajectories during the last decade- they were making white distortion before most of us knew it was music, meaning the recent change of tact is more of a nod to the band's formative years rather than completely new chapter. In the same way, American Head now sees the outfit return to their more feted and famed styles; epic operatic psychedelic pop-rock drama that seems to come from the stratosphere.

It's classic Flaming Lips but with a fittingly 2020 edge - the drug references so clearly evident on track names like 'At The Movies on Quaaludes' and 'Mother, I've Taken LSD' may reveal plenty about the frontman's own well-tweeted discovery of certain mind-altering substances, but it's also ideal fuel for a year in which most of us would rather be anywhere other than alone with our sober thoughts.

Review: Combining indie rock, psychedelic rock and Eastern influences, Flamingods certainly know how to mix things up. Levitation, their 5th album and the first since 2016's Majesty opens with a disco feel via "Paradise Place", before the laid-back grooves of "Koray" provide a leeway for more eclectic and dance-centric tracks to take hold later on in the album. The second half of the record takes us into more spacey territory best heard on "Moonshine On Water", before the band's trippy, psychedelic influences come strongly to the fore on "Mantra East" and Eastern melodies shine through on "Nizwa". An eclectic, psyched-out adventure of a record, Levitation is an album that will tempt you into Flamingods' esoteric world.

Review: Barely out of her teens, Emily Sprague is in possession of a spare and reflective outlook more redolent of an artist thrice her age, and the creative process that led to 'The Birds Outside Sang' lent itself to reflection more than most - after a bike accident left her in a neck brace and unable to use her left arm, she used her period of convalescence to piece together this understated, deeply personal yet wryly pensive work, marked by a delicacy of touch and a frailly as charming as it is disarming. Think of it as a 21st century echo of Robert Wyatt's 'Rock Bottom' if you must, yet this is far more an affecting work from a unique new talent.

Review: Oxford's Foals, now ten years old and some seven years on from their debut, have pulled the neat trick of elevating themselves to dizzy heights without essentially compromising their kinetic mixture of art-driven experimentation and widescreen melodic grandstanding. Yet 'What Went Down', their fourth salvo thus far, shows a band newly reinvigorated, and somehow managing to be both heavier and more danceable in turn. As angry and inventive as ever, the howls of mainman Yannis Philippakis have lost none of their cathartic charge, the chime of their guitars remains as seductive, yet so vibrant and vivacious is this collection of songs that their elevation to festival headliner status seems a foregone conclusion.

Review: Dublin's Fontaines D.C. have been itching for their debut album to arrive on Partisan Records for seven singles now (all of which released in the past 18 months). Full of semi-ironic lyrics delivered like a drunk Mike Skinner replacing Archy Marshall (King Krule), each track on the album delivers a jangley, dimly light, beer swindling vibe, though not all songs are for bar fights and moshing. Flashes of Bloc Party to Morrissey subtly streak across the album (see "Television Screens") while there's some sombre punk, funk ballads in "Roy's Tune" to be heard too. The album overall is electric, highly danceable, cooler than a denim jacket, and a quality first missive.

Review: Hailing from Wimbledon, Formation deal in a sound unfettered by genre distinctions yet driven onward by anti-establishment ire and maverick chutzpah, free to deal with Clash-style energy, house shapes, post-punk groove and sky-level hooks with equal aplomb, all the while maintaining a gritty vitality that can't help but bring to mind the magpie spirit and irreverent charm of LCD Soundsystem. 'Look At The Powerful People' is a strident call to arms from a band with as much uplifting spirit to offer as punk rock spite.

Review: When bands hit album four, two things can happen - or three. Some suffer from a crisis of creativity, opting to regurgitate or, worse still, stagnate. Others opt for reinvention, with as many getting it right as going well off-piste, alienating faithful fans in the process. The lucky ones, meanwhile, hit the nail on the head with their most accomplished and complete work to date. Consider Frankie Cosmos among the lucky ones, then, not that luck had much to do with it. Recorded in their New York hometown, everything about the record feels comfortable in that there's nothing forced, and yet it engages and grabs from the off. Lilting, lo-fi rock 'n' roll odes to love, life and the genre itself, anyone who's ever wondered what Cate Le Bon might sound like having a pancake breakfast with The Orielles should grab a seat at this table.

Review: Icelandic intrigue Fufanu deliver a second album in as many years, as always on London label One Little Indian, and following their Sports LP of 2017, The Dialogue Series presents eight tracks that touch on neon-lit synth pop ("Hourglass") to deeper, EBM and techno geared numbers like the darker, '90s trance-inspired "Chop Chop". At the other end of the spectrum, "Typical Critical" delivers something more seated in contemporary pop while overall the sound of the album eloquently touches on industrial and Italo elements to softer wave and indie. A band to be taken as seriously as much as they are to have fun with, there's a reason why Damon Albarn is such a fan too.

Review: Is 2020 the year that even managed to break the spirit of Baltimore synth oddballs Future Islands? Well, not quite, but this latest addition to their eccentric oeuvre is a markedly more sombre, heartbroken and emotionally scarred affair than we are used to. Nevertheless, it's not without a few life-affirming moments and hints of hidden joy.

The single 'Thrill', which arrived ahead of the full album, certainly set the tone well. A nostalgic slice of downtrodden pop balladry, sweet and helpless, it shares an air of sadness with the waves of synth that dominate opener 'Glada'. Even when the beats break from the starting blocks with more urgency - say, 'For Sure' or the bassline pulses of 'Waking' - you can't help but feel this is a beautifully tragic experience.

Review: Ty Segall, one of the leading lights and most hard-working artists of America's west coast garage scene, perfectly balances quality and quantity with 'Freedom's Goblin', his tenth studio album under his own name (include his live records, aliases and collaborations, and the total body of work effectively doubles). Having seemingly ditched the songwriting rules he had set himself on previous albums, 'Freedom's Goblin' sees Ty Segall at his most explosive and full-throttle, inventively exploring the many avenues of sub-genres of rock and psychedelia. Consisting of 19 ironclad songs that clock in at nearly eighty minutes, this is an expansive and exhilarating album that never becomes tiring. The wild combination of flawless production (co-engineered by the legendary Nirvana producer Steve Albini) and Segall's balance of raw power and melodic sensibility, makes 'Freedom's Goblin' another astoundingly high-calibre addition to an already colossal catalogue.
