  3. Lee Burton - "NDN" (6:43)
  4. Scott Edward - "You're Just A Body (You're Just A Freak)" (7:11)
Review: For the third volume in their multi-artist 12" series, DisDat has assembled a strong selection of tracks penned by a string of experienced producers. Dorian Paic and Frederico Molinari join forces on opener "Hamal", lacing tight stabs, wonky electronics and pitched-down vocal samples over a lolloping, low-slung tech-house groove. Martinez opts for a tougher, kick-drum driven groove on the similarly skewed late night throb of "Occurrence", before Lee Burton flips the script via the wonderfully deep and evocative "NDN", where dreamy chord sequences and tumbling, Motor City melodies wrap themselves around broken house beats and an acid-fired synth bassline. Finally, Scott Edward joins the dots between spacey tech-house and rubbery U.S deep house on the elastic "Your Just A Body (Your Just A Freak)" [sic].

  3. Round (7:48)
  4. Sami (4:35)
Review: By their usual standards, prolific Tel Aviv twosome Red Axes has enjoyed a relatively quiet year. In fact, this four-track EP on Life & Death contains their first original material of 2017. As usual, it's an eccentric collection of tracks. Compare, for example, the cowbell-rich, wonky house hustle of chiming opener "Calacol", which manages to be both funky and weird, and "Vego Gam", where surf guitars and alien synth lines surf an eccentric, post-punk house groove. The dancefloor eclecticism continues on the flip, where the Italo-disco/dub disco fusion of "Round" makes way for the undulating tropical drums, pots-and-pans melodies and glassy-eyed vocal snippets of "Sami".

  1. Let's Do It (A Louie Vega interpretation - Louie Vega Dance Ritual mix)
  2. Let's Do It (A Louie Vega interpretation - Louie Vega Boogie mix)
Review: Leroy Burgess's family-affair Convertion dropped this snake-hipped, piano-pumping, early hip-hop/boogie jam in 1980. Back to the future and Master At Work man Louie Vega does the honourable thing and offers up two very distinct edits on this must grip Nervous 12". First up is the Dance Ritual mix that fully displays Vega's classic soft-but-stern jack dynamic, whilst the B side Boogie Mix veers off into more sprawling territory as the tempo eases down slightly and the attention is focused on the slinky percussion that really made the original such a DJ favourite in the first place. Just do it.

  2. Philipp Boss - "Spire Solaris" (5:55)
  3. Monte Carlo Rally Sport - "Testarossa" (6:27)
  4. Luca Bazooka - "Braik" (7:05)
Review: The fifth missive from the Pager camp is something of an all-star affair, with a quartet of producers contributing a track each. First to showcase his wares is hard-working Uruguayan Z@p, whose "Sleepbox" wraps ghostly melodies and watery electronics around a rock solid, locked-in groove. Relative newcomer Philipp Boss impresses with the bold synth-bass, ocean-deep chords and fizzing riffs of "Spire Solaris", before Monte Carlo Rally Sport brilliantly joins the dots between jazz-house, broken beat and melodious Italian dream house on the hot-stepping "Testarossa". Luca Bazooka draws the curtain down on a pleasingly varied EP via the funk-fuelled breakbeats, sun-kissed guitar riffs and dusty bass of "Braik".

Review: Ark to Ashes is a record label conceived in Brooklyn and realized in Abu Dhabi. It was founded in 2013 by Shadi Megallaa. Following up releases by homeboys Taimur & Fahad (Blkmarket NYC), Leftback alumni Michael McLardy & Dudley Strangeways plus himself, it's now over to Silverlining aka the legendary UK producer Asad Rizvi. This particular project was revived after a long hiatus in 2016 and this will be the first release outside of the recently kickstarted Silverlining Dubs imprint. Starting off with the slinky and boompty minimal house groove of "Pearl Diving", on the flip it then dives even deeper with an atmospheric and texturised dub techno excursion that is Christian Rindermann aka Stardub's remix. Frankfurt's Matt Star has been around a while, but really found his sound in recent years. His remix similarly stays on the dubby tip, but with more groove and some immaculate rhythm programming.

Review: Bons Records are back with an EP packed full of soul. On their ninth release, the Catalan label is nourished by four first rate artists on an EP full of disco and funk samples. Side A features Not Me, a young Catalan producer who performs a club version of an all time essential soul record, while Madrid based Javi Frias has made another one of his sought after trips through disco music. On the flip, one of the best and most active selectors in town - DJ Bruce Lee, presents a house DJ tool with samples of a very well known disco track and finally Doc L Junior, of label rosters such as Sex Tags Mania or Music For Freaks presents a classic house track with an 80's feel to round off the EP.

  3. Wlad - "Camel Toe" (6:42)
  4. Wlad - "Camel Toe" (Swoy remix) (7:34)
Review: For the label's latest 12", Hedzup has offered crewmembers Mancini and Wlad a side each on which to showcase their wares. Mancini steps up first, laying down the becalmed bounce of "Jijijaja". This is classic late night fare that sits somewhere between European tech-house and Chez Damier style U.S deep house. Cab Drivers provides the remix, beefing up the beats and bass on a slightly more driving but no less melodious interpretation. Wlad takes over on side B, offering more metallic sounding percussion and some pleasingly wavy riffs on tech house/deep house fusion cut "Camel Toe". With its' loose, bustling percussion and booming bassline, Swoy's remix sits somewhere between DJ Sneak and Rob Mello.

  1. Pulsar (5:50)
  2. I Want House (6:20)
  3. Mars (7:02)
  4. Night Vision (5:45)
Review: Detroit by way of Cincinnati's Maurice Turner returns with this new offering: the Pulsar EP for Terence Parker's renowned Intangible Records & Soundworks. This follows up up his Glory EP for the label last year. It's a straight up, hands in the air affair in the vein of the classic midwest sound on the title track: this will really show the new kids who claim to be into 'old school' how it's really done. You can't really dispute anything about a tune named "I Want House", right? This tough and stomping workout packs in enough bump and shuffle to burn up any dancefloor. On the flip, he dives deep into the evocative and hypnotic on "Mars" that's' all about those fuzzy strings and lush orchestral section that's been sampled really well. Finally he gets techy with the raw and jackin' late night jam "Night Vision" which calls to mind classic K Alexi.

Review: Here's something to set the pulse racing: an unlikely collaboration between celebrated Italian producer DJ Tennis and Fink, one of the longest-serving members of the extended Ninja Tune family. The latter's melancholic, heartfelt vocals are a perfect foil for Tennis's gentle and melodious backing track, which layers bubbling electronics, simmering orchestration and twinkling synthesizer motifs atop a sparse, undulating drum machine groove. If we had to tightly define it, we'd call it lilting outsider pop. On the flip you'll find the "Club Mix", which wraps Fink's vocal and cascading pianos around a tactile, soft touch house groove.

Review: Hard-working LiveJam co-founder John Swing has an album on the way, hence the appearance of this sumptuous four-track sampler. As you'd expect from a producer with an impressive track record, there's much to admire from start to finish. He kicks things off with "Groove Motion", a pleasingly deep Chez Damier style club jam rich in tactile riffs, half-whispered vocals and swinging, jazz-flecked house drums, before layering up percussion on the locked-in, late night delight that is "Reminiscents". Turn to the flip to hear the dueling solos, jazz-funk bass and cymbal-heavy percussive pulse of "Heavy Jazz Vibes" and the loose, straight-to-tape warmth of rolling house groover "Bonus Track".

Review: Dublin based Major Problems is helmed by major retrovert and deep digger Compassion Crew; whose Compassion Cuts unearths more dormant classics for a well needed revival. He gave bleep techno anthem "Pressure Dub" by Ability II a well needed re-rub and now turns his deft hand at 2BMW 's 1990 classic "Don't Tell Me" (How Love Should Feel) by one Larry Rauson of Luxury Productions (The New Crew) fame. This was the one and only release on Life Of Luxury. Rauson is a founding member and producer for the independent label New Generation Records and has recorded with Tony Humphries and Louie Vega over the years. This deep and bittersweet jam is one of those perfect examples of the early '90s house zeitgeist by this underrated New Jersey producer. Also features "Love Dub" (Compassion Crew Re-rub) a lo-slung and bumpin DJ tool, in addition to Larry's Luxury mix of the same track featuring some truly sexy sax stylings.

Review: Vancouver based producer Woodhead has appeared previously on Editorial, Royal Soul and Homebreakin' in addition to local imprint East Van Audio. Now he serves up his new offering, entitled Deeper Than Love which features some truly tasty edits. The classic vibe of "Be With You" will be familiar to some in all its dazzling '70s style glory: you know the name of this one right? There's Rhodes galore of the deep and hypnotic late night jam "I Love You" which again is spliced to perfection. On the flip, witness those amazing synth riffs beneath that epic filter sweep action on "Love So Fine" which is absolutely looped for pleasure. Finishing up these respectful edits is one more ergonomic disco tool (for DJ use only) on the feelgood and funky "Whenever You're Around".

Review: Tring's finest Huxley returns outside of his usual imprints such as Aus or his own No Ideas for Matthias Tanzmann's Leipzig powerhouse Moon Harbour: with with three surefire dancefloor cuts of slinky and grooving tech house. The pumping and directly executed funk of "Careo" is perfect to make that transition into the busy period on a Saturday night. On the flip, he takes things into the darker and more dramatic realm; we have the near tribal ecstasy of "F-Bomb" with its powerful toms thundering away alongside those gloriously jacking vocals that are somewhat familiar. This one is reminiscent of the sounds coming out of NYC round the turn of the millennium by the likes of Cevin Fisher. Some more great stuff by the lad known to his Mum as Michael Dodman.

Review: 11 years on from their much-played debut, Andre Schmidt and Philippe Egger continue to release impressive music under the Mountain People moniker. This is their third release of an action-packed year, and sees the Swiss duo deliver two, high quality club tracks and a sumptuous ambient cut. While the latter ("Je Trouve (Intro)") is undeniably luscious and fluid, with the addition of delay-laden spoken word vocals, it's the main, floor-focused version of "Je Trouve" that stands out. Built around bubbling acid lines, ricocheting percussion hits and a lolloping machine groove, it's a trippy slice of late night tech-house perfection. Further peak-time thrills can be found on opener "Cielo Rojo", where cascading synthesizer melodies and dreamy pads ride a bustling, floor-friendly groove.

Review: Since first popping up on Comeme in 2012, Barcelona-based Colombian Sebastian "Sano" Hoyos has been responsible for a smattering of superb EPs and a sole bustling full-length. This is his second outing on the eccentric Public Possession imprint and sees him deliver a trio of quirky cuts that mix vocals and rhythms from his home country (re-played on battered drum machines) with synthesizer sounds from the 1980s. This blend is most potent on cheery, tropical synth-pop A-side "El Tecnopop", but can also be heard on "El Juancho", where non-stop vocals, darting acid synths and foreboding bass ride a layered, tribal drum groove. Also impressive is closer "No Quiero Nada Contigo", a drum-machine driven cumbia outing that makes great use of sampled scratches and weird electronics.

Review: Hamburg purveyors of the deep Smallville are back with the debut of L'amour Fou, The Dujuan EP is the work of David Moufang aka Move D with Benoit Bouquin and Taipei based Marco Wollenberg. While opening cut "Sunday Haze" may sound like more generic fare, with its emotive house organs and all; the trio really find their sound on the B side when they dive into the deep and abstract. The evocative title track for instance, with its razor sharp and wandering arpeggio which is backed by a wonderfully hypnotic arrangement. Final offering "The Last Call" incorporates live instrumentation (mainly that sombre fingerpicked guitar riff), over ambient textures and reverb drenched field recordings with dusty rhythm patterns. Like most anything involving Moufang you really can't go wrong: and this one's no exception!

Review: Steel City Dance Discs: the vinyl only label curated by Mall Grab and most likely named after his hometown town of Newcastle in New South Wales Australia. It has served up killer releases recently by the likes of Ghettohousedrummachine, DJ Astral and X-Coast. It's now the turn of Jun Kamoda of Mister Saturday Night and Kabukahrythm fame. The quirky neon-lit funk of "Flaming Flamingo" starts of the A side along with the dusty and hypnotic confusion of "Misty Funk" which would be perfect for playing at an after-hours. On the flip, the EPs most lively moment comes in the form of the uplifting "The Fine Line" reminiscent of early Derrick Carter's Sound Patrol project.

Review: Having spent the last few years establishing himself as one of the world's most consistent makers of melodious, head-in-the-clouds deep house and blissful electronica, Project Pablo has secured a deal with Ninja Tune offshoot Technocolour. His first outing for the imprint is as colourful, hazy and tuneful as you'd expect, with glistening opener "Is It Dry?" setting the tone. The Montreal-based producer breaks up the beats a little on the cheeky but dreamy analogue funk of "No Sweat", before dropping a fistful of happy pills on the bustling, up-tempo dream house revivalism of "You Know". Finally, he explores his long-held love of breakbeat-driven tracks on the yearning but jaunty brilliance of closer "Oh Fer Sure".

Review: On his fifth full length - and first solo effort for six years - German veteran Oliver Huntemann shows few signs of mellowing with age. From start to finish, Propaganda is an exercise in late night dancefloor dynamics. While there are occasional moments of heady beat-less contemplation, for the most part the album is an invitation to get lost in the producer's dark and woozy world. That means that hypnotic techno rhythms, booming basslines, weird noises and clandestine chords dominate, with Huntemann choosing to showcase his numerous influences (electro, dark ambient, Kraftwerk, film soundtracks, industrial music and Red Rackem's "Wonky Disco Bassline Banger", for example) within this rigid formula. The results are quietly impressive, with Huntemann serving up a string of solid club tracks for DJ use.

  1. Forever Mona (French Vox) (6:52)
  2. Forever Mona (Forever South) (6:33)
  3. Forever Mona (Ron & Chez Remaster) (4:46)
  4. Forever Mona (reprise) (4:27)
Review: "Forever Mona" was originally released in 1995 on Prescription Records sub-label Balance Recordings. A collaboration between Detroit legend and label boss (alongside Ron Trent) Chez Damier and the emerging young talent of the Motor City's third wave known as Stacey Pullen who would go on to found Black Flag Records and become a legend in his own right. A timeless classic amongst those that know, the four versions of the track featured here represent a true zeitgeist of the mid nineties Motor City sound in all its, funky, emotive and hi-tech deepness. This re-issue respectfully presents all the four tracks in their original format and not just one side like some of the bootlegs out there.

Remixes (12")
Cat: BEER 003. Rel: 23 Oct 17
  1. Jamie 3:26 & Masalo - "Testify" (Terrence Parker remix) (7:28)
  2. Art Of Tones - "I Just (Can't Get Over It)" (Terrence Parker remix) (7:29)
Review: Sublime remix magic from Detroit's Terrence Parker on HNNY's sporadic but forever on-point Beer. Taking two of Local Talk's coolest grooves of 2016, he adds his own deep drive and sparkle to both cuts and the results speak for themselves... Jamie 3.26 and Masalo's gospel smasher gets a new bulletproof groove coat while the flip, Art Of Tones' "I Just (Can't Get Over It)" is draped with a sparkling synth sheen and given just an extra bit of energy in the piano-primed groove. Quintessential Parker.

  2. Arkmagedon (6:33)
  3. Perles A Rerbours (8:13)
  4. Perles A Rerbours (Kaesar & Cruz remix) (6:17)
Review: Don't, for a second, think that Portugal's Bloop imprint is some sort of newcomer to the scene. Fair enough, they might have flown below-radar over the years, but this crew's been churning out quality house and tech since the mid 00s - peeps like Mirco Violi, Kasper and Alex Niggeman having come through the label at various points in time. There is a newcomer here, however, and his name is ARK, who launches "In Lov" on us - a broken, pseudo house experiment with an organic touch. "Arkmagedon" is straighter, more stomping but nonetheless jazzy in its approach, while on the flip, "Perles A Rebours" dives into a cavernous sea of eerie tones carried forth by a dubby swing, and the Kaesar & Cruz remix strips the groove back down to a minimalistic house chugger for the floor.

  4. The Search (Obsession For Percussion mix) (6:30)
Review: Following a spotless run of releases on the likes of ClekClekBoom, Finale Sessions and Sistrum, Aleqs Notal makes his debut on Phonogramme with a four-track cross-continental odyssey that fuses, explores and provokes kindred sonic themes between his home city and the home of afrofunk. "This Place" eases us in with interlocked percussion and big Booker T level organ blasts while "Our Streets" takes us down more shadowy lanes where the synths hover like fog and ooze slowly like a jungle record played at half speed and "Infinite Bliss" eases us into something more comfortable with slinky bongo rolls and lingering, hazy keys in a way that could be compared to Joe Claussell. Finally Aleqs provides deep mix pleasure with an alluring percussive instrumental "The Search". Hypnosis mode: enabled.
