  1. Looking Up To You (5:21)
  2. Diamond Real (Tee Scott instrumental mix) (7:07)
Review: Probably most known as the hook sampled in Zhane's breakthrough 1993 R&B smash hit "Hey Mr. DJ", it's only in recent years that it has been recognised as being from Michael Wycoff's 1982 sleeper hit "Looking Up To You". Taken from his second album Love Conquers All, Wycoff's short lived solo career sadly hit a dead end shortly after and he apparently went through tough times. That is until getting back on his feet via a new found faith and these days he is a Minister of Music at several Los Angeles area churches. "Looking Up To You" is a timeless soul classic featuring his signature vocal style, a lush string section, an even tighter brass section and powerhouse backing vocal team: you just don't get music like this anymore! B side cut "Diamond Real" (Tee Scott instrumental mix) is a more upbeat boogie number, with P-funk style elements plus neon-lit synths and disco guitar licks - wouldn't have been out of place on the Beverly Hills Cop soundtrack actually!

New For U (12" Nachpressung)
Cat: LAVIDA 001. Rel: 27 Nov 17
  1. New For U (5:44)
  2. Drama Around The Corner (4:40)
  3. Jazz Dance (7:30)
Review: Mahogani regular Andres comes correct once again with the debut drop on his new label La Vida, with three tracks that flow with that inimitable Motor City soul. Much like previous Andres output, the triplet on New For U draw obvious lines of influence from Dilla and Dixon Jnr, though it's all sprinkled with Dez's own unique touch and style, be it the infectious snap of percussion or deft and subtle implementation of samples. The title track is a gloriously ripe combination of both those elements as thick drums intertwine with the sumptuous waves of strings and warm chiming chords, everything worked into a rhythmic template that weaves with intoxicating energy. "Drama Around The Corner" makes for one of Andres' trademark neck snapping beatdown moments and the level of percussive detail that's apparent when you concentrate is stunning and is the charming almost brief interlude to the B Side magic. Commencing with a short, looped up jazzual intro, "Jazz Dance" swiftly settles into a stripped down procession of bumping drums, low reaching double bass and swift keys - all of which are intermittently complemented by some expertly looped vocal samples. Occupying most of the B Side, it feels like the track could reach into infinity without losing any charm. Rightly the 12" of the year for us and many others.

  4. OTTHP (6:36)
Review: Producer Joe Deamer dons the Medrea guise for the very first time, in the process notching up the fifth release on the hyped Hokkaido Dance Club imprint. Deamer's style is, like many modern deep house and techno producers, simultaneously lo-fi and melodious, as the attractively swinging opener "Untitled" makes abundantly clear. His rich and rolling original version is given the remix treatment by Church and PT/5 regular Happa, who turns it into a wild chunk of left-field house full of discordant 8-bit melodies and off-kilter rhythms. Over on side B, Deamer delivers a jeweled goblet of liquid deep house ("Untitled 2"), before working his drum machines hard on the distorted, L.I.E.S style throb of "OTTHP".

  1. Do You Want Me (7:20)
  2. The DJ Knows What I Like (9:32)
Review: Noble Square celebrates its 10 year anniversary with a repress of Chicago's Ricardo Miranda & K Joy's 2011 EP. This 12" features the dusty, deep and soulful blues of "Do You Want Me" which is in the vein of masters like Nick Holder and Kenny Dixon Jr. On the flip we have the dirty late night acid jack of "The DJ Knows What I Like" featuring squeaky synths, rusty rhythm patterns and Joy's sultry come hither vocals. According to the label, 'the original master reels were lost so the YONURICAN SOUL Brotha made all new music.' Noble Square Recordings is a showcase of memorable dance music that seeks to stay grounded in the strong foundation of Chicago's roots. A foundation that includes many forms/styles of underground music, but without the burden of useless labels. Noble Square presents 'not only sonic love but also sonic statements.'

  2. Kamran Sadeghi - "Compound Eye" (6:51)
  3. Kamran Sadeghi & Dana Ruh - "Call & Response" (7:02)
Review: American minimal maestro Kamran Sadeghi is without a doubt one the most singular talents in techno at the moment and here offers yet more refreshing perspectives for Dana Ruh and Anthea's Broquade imprint. This follows up some killer releases of later of late by the NYC/Berlin based live act on Meander and Fasten Musique. On the A side we have the stripped back trance induction exercise of "Come Here" most likely conjured from is impressive modular setup, awash in glitchy delay drenched drums and whirry synth textures. On the flip, "Compound Eye" is a more energetic effort with its tribal drum workout beneath airy pads and analogue blips and blurps - all combined for tremendous hypnotic effect. Finally, he teams up with label boss Ruh for a drastic change of vibe - but not altogether unpleasant! The boompty business of "Call & Response" sees Sadeghi's studio wizardry combine with Ruh's sense of swing perfectly on this sunny afterhours joint - that wouldn't sound out of place aboard the Hoppetosse on a Sunday morning!

Stay (12" Nachpressung)
Cat: DINER 002. Rel: 27 Nov 17
  1. Stay (8:18)
  2. Venus Requiem (5:56)
Review: Having previously impressed on Argot and Home Taping Is Killing Music with her blends of evocative deep house and floor-friendly Chicago rhythms, The Black Madonna tries a different approach on this debut for the recently launched Night Owl Diner label. You could certainly describe both tracks as "Balearic", and there's a real air of wide-eyed positivity about the tumbling melodies, swirling synth-strings and mid-80s pop production of head-nodding deep house cut "Stay". It's pretty darn tasty, all told. Almost as good is "Requiem", which appears to be built around a loop lifted from Cherrelle and Alexander O'Neal's "Saturday Love" (with, of course, additional synths and tuneful electronics).

  3. Giovanni Damico - "Kitkat" (5:02)
  4. Kolja Gerstenberg - "Get Your Ass Up" (6:09)
Review: British deep house imprint Quintessentials is back after some great releases of late by Mexican producers 4004 and Soul Of Hex, Tuscany's Mat Chiavaroli and Russian Ponthy Mython. On the A side of this various artists compilation entitled Gentlemen Cuts, we have Andrea Pedra aka Kian-T from Tuscany with the deep and dusty soul-jazz of "Disco Sauvage". Nobody does deepness like the Swiss and indeed Replika's "Hallowgram" delivers the goods. On the flip we have some funky nu-jazz business by Salerno's Giovanni Damico (aka Ron Juan) in the form of "Kitkat" channelling classic Phil Asher/Restless Soul kind of vibes, while Leipzig's Kolja Gerstenberg (Suol/Smile For A While) delivers the EP's finest moment on the irresistable "Get Your Ass Up". It's a dusty and sexy jam reminiscent of early Agnes or Baaz. All killer no filler from this fine league of gentlemen!

  1. Acid Jazz (6:30)
  2. Acid Dub (5:53)
Review: With a title such as 808 Sessions, you'd expect this latest missive from reliable Chicago veteran Glenn Underground to be built around the weighty analogue beats of Roland's classic TR-808 drum machine. While that's the case, it's actually his use of TB-303 "acid" lines that catches the ear. They come to the forefront on A-side "Acid Jazz", where wiggly motifs, cascading melody lines and reverb-laden Rhodes chords ride a hybrid deep house/beatbox electro groove. It's superb, all told, though the stripped back "Acid Dubbb" B-side - a raw, TB-303 heavy interpretation of the A-side shorn of GU's usual deep house niceties - is arguably even better.

  3. Aquatic Movement 1 (8:00)
Review: When the IT first started releasing music over 30 years ago, the project was a collaboration between legendary producer Larry Heard and singer/songwriter Harry Dennis. With Heard no longer involved, it has fallen to the equally legendary Ron Trent to produce this fine EP. Dennis is in fine form on the title track, speaking and singing over an ultra-deep and sensuous backing track rich in bubbly synth lines, dreamy chords and spacey electronics. Over on the B-side, Trent and Dennis dip the tempo on the blissful warmth of "Monterey (Album Version)" - all undulating synth bass, cascading pianos and conga-rich percussion - before showcasing their piano playing via the impeccable late night deep house loveliness that is "Aquatic Movement 1".

  1. Playdem (7:13)
  2. Shimmering (vinyl Only) (7:55)
Review: With such a heavyweight trio of tech-house talents involved, you'd expect this surprise studio hook-up between Enzo Siragusa, Archie Hamilton and Subb-An to be rather good. Predictably, both tracks hit the spot. A-side "Playdem" hits all the right notes, with the experienced threesome wrapping creepy chords, jaunty piano motifs and carefully chosen spoken word snippets around a fireside-warm bassline and snappy, handclap-heavy machine drums. The fun continues on flipside "Shimmering", a ludicrously loose and bass-heavy roller blessed with deep and trippy electronics and just the right of late night funk. Really, though, it's the weightiness of the sub-bass that hits home hardest.

  2. Baris (Oceanvs Orientalis remix) (6:58)
  3. Ayam (Red Axes remix) (6:20)
  4. Majid (Nico Stojan remix) (7:04)
Review: As you'd probably expect, Ouie has done a good job selecting remixers to work their magic on tracks from Acid Pauli's recent sophomore album, BLD. We were initially drawn to Red Axes' superb take on "Ayam", which oozes psychedelic, head-turning intent (much like the Israeli duo's original productions, in fact) and thrilling changes direction a number of times whilst retaining a heavy, dub-inspired groove. There's no doubt this remix stands out, but there are also impressive turns from Nico Stojan, whose gently unfurling version of "Majid" achieves a fine balance between club-ready punch and head-in-the-clouds attractiveness, and hypnotic tech-house/deep house fusionist Sainte Vie.

  1. Liem - "Suzy Wong CC" (5:09)
  2. DJ Assam - "Midnight Murders" (6:27)
Review: Lehult's latest is a double A-side affair featuring a track each from label regulars Liem and DJ Assam. It's Liem who steps up to bat first, looping up dreamy, vaguely familiar samples (think glistening guitars and horizontal jazz-funk vibes) and underpinning them with tasty deep house drums on the warm and groovy "Suzy Wong CC". On the flip, DJ Assam goes deeper and woozier, offering up a smouldering chunk of saucer-eyed Balearic deep house bliss with added Moog solos and the kind of sickly-sweet female vocals that usually hit the spot when the sun's coming up. Both tracks are heavily reliant on elements from obscure old tunes, but make terrific use of their rather lovely source material.

  4. Sand (Frank & Tony Breakaway dub) (6:41)
Review: Fresh from inspired outings on Freerange, Monologues and Axe on Wax, Greg Stewart brings his DJ Aakmael project to Scissor & Thread. He sets his stall out via opener "Take It Back", a wonderfully loose, relaxed and sepia-tinted deep house cut that simply oozes melodious warmth from start to finish. Stewart showcases his knowledge of vintage New Jersey deep house on "What Iz Deep House", where pitched-down spoken word samples and jazzy riffs work in unison with a snappy drum machine groove, before opting for a classic Frankie Knuckles sound on the tactile and piano-heavy "Sand". Frank and Tony are on hand to remix the latter, delivering a stripped-back and bass-heavy dub that's every bit as alluring as Stewart's original version.

  3. I'm Missin You (6:29)
Review: Next up on Will Saul's tech house powerhouse is the return of NYC by way of New Haven maestro Drew Lustman aka FaltyDL with some energised modern hi-NRG vibes on "Wondering Mind". With its diva vocals, euphoric arpeggios and energised rhythms all working together for perfect dancefloor drama. Next up, the cleverly titled "Paradox Garage" goes for more reverse looking aesthetics on this evocative acid house tribute, awash in grainy lo-fi aesthetics, bumpy bass and jacked vocals on something reminiscent of classic 808 State. Finally on the flip, we have "I'm Missin You" which is also presented in a brazenly retro aesthetic with its grainy and saturated tape quality. Complete with Jamie Principle style vocals, disco guitar licks and all round neon-lit aesthetic which takes you back to the legendary Windy City days of Trax Records and WBMX Hot Mix radio late night sessions.

The disco fiend turns his deft hand at a tight resplice of a classic by a certain Rhumba band from 2nd Avenue on "I'm An Indian Too" (Lay-Far Refix) and this is raw funk! Next up, ladies & gentlemen (hint hint!) we have the Afrobeat soul explosion of "Like Her" (Lay-Far re-edit). Review: Internasjonal's refreshingly worldwide focus continues apace here with a comprehensive label debut from Belgrade-based musician and producer Nenad Markovic. Despite high profile names like Mark E, Hunee and Mano Le Tough appearing on the label, Internasjonal has largely been a platform for unheralded talent to shine and Markovic certainly does that with Kayto. This seven track album presents the eminently talented Croatian to have a true mastery of his instruments and a production style that is effortlessly contemporary in it's approach to disco. The bugged out jazz house of "Theme" and the Balearically inclined "Weather" are standouts on a fine debut release.
