Calypso (1-sided 12")
Cat: DEGU 024. Rel: 26 Mar 18
  1. Calypso (6:23)
Review: A few years back, Ditongo - an alternative alias for Peru-based nu-disco producer Batongo - served up a quartet of tasty re-edit releases before heading back underground. Here he resurfaces with what we believe to be one of his strongest cut-jobs to date. Sure, there's only one track on offer, but it's an absolute beast. "Calypso" sees him playing around with a disco-era soca cut, brilliantly teasing out a punchy, extra-percussive rhythm track before unleashing elements of his steamy, Caribbean source material. There's a superb breakdown and build up midway through, too, which the producer uses to introduce a killer spoken word passage. In other words, it's a simple but brilliantly effective peak-time re-rub that's more than worthy of your hard-earned cash.

Do You Know Black History (reissue) (12" Nachpressung) (1 per customer)
Cat: BK 006. Rel: 26 Mar 18
  1. Do You Know Black History (8:51)
  2. Do You Know Black History (musical) (8:52)
Review: Originally recorded, self-published and released in 1985 by a school teacher in Miami for educational purposes, copies of 'Do You Know Black History' did not circulate much further than Florida's public school libraries and the record has been shrouded in mystery up until now, thanks to this official reissue from Backatcha Records. Dr Mary Sullivan Bain recorded the song to be used as motivational tool in the Miami-Dade public school system she taught in. Produced with no label constraints, this cross-genre grail sits comfortably in many boxes with a cosmic blend of 808's, bass synths, deep chords, live percussion and effects dubbed into the mix. The production leans towards the electronic diy framework that became central to the local sound of south side Miami. Whilst the categories are blurred, what's clear is that Bain was thinking outside of the box, both musically and educationally.

The Hoal (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: NAU 007. Rel: 26 Mar 18
  1. The Hoal (10:40)
  2. Bad Wire (14:49)
Review: Einzelkind's bubbling strands of deep-minded tech-house have evolved significantly over the years, transforming his linear dance trax into serious mind-melters with a euphoric twist. This latest EP for Romania's Naural label is without a doubt one of his best efforts yet, taking the house framework into some irresistible new territories. Starting with "The Hoal", it's clear that four-to-the-floor is a small relic by this point, as subtle infusions of breaks and eerie melodies take over the best part of the cut; "Bad Wire" feels like a continuation of that same vibe, except here the acid loops loom larger up above, forming a tight groove for the late night sessions.

  3. Expectations (4:32)
  4. Coast 2 Coast (7:12)
  5. Spiders (4:15)
  6. Saturn's Return (5:53)
Review: Since forming the Bermuda band last year, Aussie adventurer Harvey Sutherland has delivered a string of loose, oven-hot singles that effortlessly combine the best of boogie, soul, jazz-funk and Beatdown style deep house. With Bermuda providing live drums, keys, guitar and bass, Expectations sees Sutherland continue this fine run of form. It's a mini album chocked full of sparkling, sun-kissed cuts that defy simple categorization. For example, "Coast 2 Coast" expertly fuses a deep house aesthetic with elements of P-funk and jazz-funk, while the deep and spacey "Expectations" and "Spiders" - the latter also blessed with sublime strings - feel more horizontal and Balearic in tone. The strings return on the Metro Area-ish brilliance of "Saturn's Return", which may well be the set's most beguiling moment.

  3. Derek Carr - "Ceres Station" (6:43)
  4. Cozmic Jazzz Futurist - "Space Jazzz (Movement 1)" (6:04)
Review: Following fine outings from Bigneric and Dark Matrix last year, Childhood Intelligence sets out its stall for 2018 via a fine, compilation style EP. Fernando the Lobster steps up first, wrapping rich deep house keys and starry electronics around a deep electro groove, before Bigneric's "Ukrel" delivers a dose of deep tech-house goodness. Over on side B, Derek Carr unfurls spacey chords and analogue sounding drums on the quietly hypnotic "Ceres Station", while Cozmic Jazzz Futurist pitches down the beats on a deep, jazzy and almost horizontal late night soundscape. A strong start to the year, all told.

Review: The Joule imprint continues to wreak havoc on our charts, and this latest collaboration between brothers Matt and Mark Thibideau is exactly the right thing for you if you're looking for some effective house grooves. Matt Thibideau's first two tracks, "Evaporation" and "Time Stands" are both effortlessly punchy deep house bangers with a strong dub-techno presence at their core, deep in the lower ends of the tracks; Mark's two licks are no different, both similarly laying down heavy 4/4 punches with mounds of echo and dubwise filtering. Smooth and elegant DJ tools.

  3. Pohl - "Quantized" (6:32)
  4. Pohl - "RD084" (5:54)
Review: Newcomers Paul Macri and Pohl come through with some new sound sculptures for Low Money Music Love, weaving yet more delightful house vibes into this fast-growing catalogue of dance bliss. Marci breaks out "Orbit D" and "Tonka", two spacey dance affairs that take the Chicago deep house foundations onto new and exciting corners that reside way out in the 'outsider' realm. On the flip, Pohl's "Quantized" flutters its mechanical bleeps and tones over a bass-heavy, dub-filtered house groove, and "RD084" super-charges that into tech mode with further layers of acid noises and big, bad basslines for the more capable of sound systems.

I Ran (12")
Cat: DH 014. Rel: 26 Mar 18
  1. I Ran (8:25)
  2. I Ran (Simple Symmetry remix) (6:47)
Review: Given that this is Moscoman's first solo single on the Disco Halal imprint he inaugurated in 2015, it's perhaps unsurprising that he's saved something rather special for the occasion. "I Ran" is a throbbing, high-octane peak-time treat, where haunting Arabic vocals seemingly float over a thrusting, arpeggio-driven groove and bubbly, off-kilter machine drums. It's druggy and intoxicating, of course, but also fiendishly heavy and pleasingly unorthodox. On the flipside, old pals Simple Symmetry re-imagine "I Ran" as a sticky and trippy chunk of organic Arabic dub disco, complete with toasty bass and razor-sharp electric guitars. It's not quite as thrilling as Moscoman's original version, but it's a close run thing.

  2. L_M_Y_S_A (Love Is Subjective remix) (6:26)
  3. -L_Y_A_R_S (Forever mix) (6:36)
Review: Dennis Sulta's Selects series, in which he shares some of the secret, home-made weapons that have been lighting up his sets for years, has previously provided DJs with some seriously hot peak-time tools. Predictably, there's more to be found on Volume 3. Check, for example, "D_K_Y (But I Do)", a disco-fired slammer that starts out as a dusty but life-affirming re-edit before turning into a heavyweight, groove-based loop-jam midway through. Over on the flipside, Sulta serves up a distortion-soaked, extreme filter-disco thumper rich in rewind sounds and cut-up samples ("L_M_Y_S_A (Love is Subjective Remix)") before working his magic on a stone cold disco classic on "L_Y_A_R_S (Forever Mix)". As you'd expect, all three tracks have been thoroughly road tested and are capable of soliciting a rapturous response if dropped at the right time.

Review: Rolling up sock donuts since 2013, the evergreen D.ko imprint serves up a feast once more with this delicious all-French V/A 12. Laroze makes his D.ko debut with a sprightly disco gem before Monomite adds a dash of sleazy boogie funk before Mezique takes us right back to the peak of Paris's discotheque scene with infectious robo-funking insistency. Finally label familiar and Rag Dabons cohort Sandro closes with a dewy eyed slice of emotional acid. Au revior.

Review: While undoubtedly best known for his work as part of Slum Village and Plantinum Pied Pipers, Waajeed has spent the last few years exploring the dusty deep house sounds of his home city, Detroit. This EP for Carl Craig's Planet E imprint comes on the back of collaborations with Theo Parrish and a handful of killer 12" singles. As you'd expect, it's impeccably produced, with the storied beat-maker sauntering between soul-fired deep house/Detroit techno fusion ("Track 1"), lolloping, Theo-meets-Larry Heard deepness ("Track 2"), piano-laden peak-time stomp ("Track 3") and shimmering, intergalactic richness (Kyle Hall style closer "Track 4"). In other words, it's another essential EP from a man whose music simply oozes soul, regardless of the style he's operating in.

Review: Viennese producer Wolfram returns, outside of his usual labels like DFA and Permanent Vacation - this time on Munich oddball house imprint Public Possession. His new jam "Automatic Dub" is pure Italo disco heaven, with soaring arpeggios, glistening analogue strings and rusty drum computers galore - calling to mind legends like Gino Soccio and Bobby Orlando. Turns out it's actually based on Dee D. Jackson's "Automatic Lover" from 1978 - a Kristian Schultze production. There's a couple of kick ass remixes featured too: The Samo DJ Automatic Remix sees the Born Free boss take it down a dirty and heady acidified route, filled with some gnarly tape delay shenanigans.

Review: If it aint broke don't fix it: Phil Weeks' winning recipe is on display once again, with this great label sampler that showcases his knack for seeking out the most infectious of looped-up, dusted down and disco-fied sounds -all optimised for ergonomic DJ use. His typically bouncy sound can be heard on "The Ghetto Code" where he uses a very familiar hook of a Windy City classic. Deep, lo-slung and downright funky shenanigans by Iban Montoro & Jazzman Wax on "Juernes Day" round up the A side. On the flip, label mainstay and fellow Parisian homeboy Joss Moog delivers the goods once again on the hypnotic boompty business of "Room 28", while Arturo Garces' "Catch Me" explores classic Arthur Russell style disco vibes in a rather irresistible fashion.

Review: This 12" marks the debut of Session Victim's new label Pen and Paper, an imprint that appears almost ten years to the day from the duo's first 12" release. Title track "Puzzle" is a little darker, woozier and more intense than much of their work, with ricocheting percussion hits, moody chords and jazzy, jammed-out electric piano motifs rising above a locked-in, late night groove. It's accompanied on side A by a deliciously deep, Twin Peaks-goes-deep-house remix by Giegling regular Vril. Iron Curtis takes control on the B-side, serving up two fresh reworks of Puzzle. Choose between the breakbeat-driven, Balearic-minded deep house positivity of the Broken Flowers mix (B1) and the tactile, spacey and synth-heavy bounce of the classic Detroit techno influenced Passagen Mix.

Review: Purism leaps into action once more, this time welcoming a strong cast of lesser known characters that fit right into the adventurous approach to house and techno that the label has forged its reputation on. All these producers make their first appearances here, but you wouldn't know it listening to the quality of the tracks on offer. Rafael Kasma's "Static Rope" is a quintessential grooving house jam with some killer filtered chords, while Munir Nadir brings the twitchy minimalism vibes on "Milagro". Jackie is on a sultry, jazzy deep house tip with "Lune" and Mag0 rounds things off with the cheeky, quirky funk of "Spectrum".

Dusted with more of his dreamy jazzy signature he's been developing on labels such as Local Talk and G.A.M.M. Flexing from the squidgy mild acid disco funk of "Atmos" to the lolloping double bass jacks and warped strings and pianos of "TSOS" by way of the woozy aquatic synths and sensual soul whirls of "OrangePeelSkin" and far-out deep dream desert jazz ("The Deepest"), this is Turbojazz's most accomplished and generous EP to date. Review: Mr. Fries is up next on Soulphiction's esteemed Philpot imprint with some deep dusty and downright sensual house that brazenly takes its cues from the Kenny Dixon Jr. and Three Chairs sound out of the Motor City and when such tributes are this flattering - it's all good. From the sweltering A side cut "Visions" which is perfect for those long hot sexy nights, the evocative and soulful vibe continues well into the B side. "Alittlewhile" is a sombre, woozy gospel inspired cut in the vein of the aforementioned Dixon's Forevernevermore opus, then the pumpin' and funky "Modern Conversations" ends things on a more positive note, complete with life affirming vocal samples and tough as hell MPC loops to boot. This Dortmund based producer has appeared previously on Contrary, Soul Notes and Wolf Music.

Review: Those with a love for turn-of-the-'90s UK house and techno may be familiar with Westworld, one of the many aliases of video game music composer turned rave producer Matthew Gray. Here, two of the most potent cuts in the Westworld catalogue get the rework treatment, with Running Back boss Gerd Janson at the controls. The A-side is all about Janson's tweak of "Dreamworld", a piano-sporting Italian dream house tribute that the producer has wisely chosen to smooth out and make even more dizzyingly loved-up. 1990 single "The Slam" gets the scalpel treatment on the flipside. Interestingly, Janson has chosen to ignore the original's bleeps and heavy sub-bass, instead focusing on the track's rolling hip-house elements. He's also delivered a tasty DJ tool in the shape of the beats-and-effects vibe of the "Dub Siren Beats" tweak.

Review: For Royal Oak, Barese DJ Nicola Loporchio aka Cosmic Garden serves up some deep and emotive house sounds reminiscent of mid nineties Windy City sounds - think Alleviated or Prescription Records. Following up some great releases on HotMix and his own Cosmic Rhythm, there's proper life affirming vibes on "Loving Higher", awash in celestial pads and hypnotic melodies, while "Lifetime" on the flip nails that classic early '90s rave vibe that you could have heard under the M25 motorway during the second summer of love. The loved up, breakbeat driven UK vibe continues on the lush closer "On My Mind" with its glistening FM keys that'll be sure to get some hands in the air moments.

Review: For their first release of 2018, Toy Tonics stalwarts Black Loops is joined in the studio by fellow Italian producer Innocent Soul, head honcho of the recently launched Strictly Street Sounds imprint.
