John Shima & Mihail P for Music Minds Matter
Cat: SER 001. Rel: 22 Jun 20
  1. John Shima - "Seasons"
  2. John Shima - "Hunter Mind"
  3. Mihail P - "Momentum"
  4. Mihail P - "Neon Hologarden"
Review: REPRESS ALERT!: Serenity is a new label geared towards raising money and awareness around mental health in the music industry. The label kicks off in fine style with the supple, expressive techno of John Shima and Mihail P offering up two tracks each. Shima takes the A side with the warm and bubbling synth expressions of "Seasons" before taking things in a more hypnotic direction on the ever-so-slightly trancey "Hunter Mind". Mihail P maintains a similar vintage techno sound palette, but pings for positive constellations with the jubilant "Momentum" before veering into blissful breakbeat on "Neon Hologarden".

Review: Shine Grooves is a multifaceted artist, and this second record for Kimochi Sound explores two sides of that personality. The delicate, introspective, expressive precision of After All, DPS v55, and Secret move from sublime resignation to summery exuberance to a kind of earnest meditation. On the other side, collaborations with X343 yield a more extroverted approach: spontaneous mutations turn rolling grooves into unpredictable improvisational explorations.

  4. Rebel Nina (1:24)
Review: Here's a special club 12" for serious heads dealing in a set of mixes of "Blackbird". You have to come correct when you dare step to Nina Simone, but you know full well the cast of characters assembled on this 12" can be trusted with the high priestess of soul. Timmy Regisford is up first, bringing some intense organ lines and Lately bass into the mix with a perfect balance between jubilant expression and tension. Joe Claussell then steps up with two different edit and overdub versions, where the organs get poured on more liberally and the whole jam boils over. As a wonderful bonus element, you get a powerful acapella monologue from Nina Simone to close out the B side.

Review: Curated By Time hop into their time travelling machine and take us back to 1997 for a reissue of this bristling disco house cut from Skymaster. Opener "Disco Tripping" the sort of infectious, high speed groove train that sweeps up anyone in its path: the busy keys rattle about over sliding drums and hits and kicks punch endlessly. "Tunnel Vision" is more dark and late night techno but still with a colourful sense of flair and "Free Your Mind" is the last and possibly best of the lot - a lush bassline rolls over and over, with dreamy pads drifting up to the heavens to bring an effortless sense of cool.

  1. Airier (8:38)
  2. Petrichor (6:32)
  3. Head Over The Clouds (7:05)
Review: It's been a good couple of years since Japanese micro-house specialist So Inagawa released a solo single. The arrival of the Airier EP on Cabaret Recordings - a label he co-founded - is therefore cause for celebration. The title track, in particular, is rather wonderful. It's warm, sumptuous and spacey, with cascading electronics, disconnected vocal samples and gently dubbed-out motifs wrapping themselves around a tactile, bass-heavy groove. It's the kind of cut that should appeal to both deep house and tech-house DJs. On the flipside you'll find another deep space shuffler (the rather attractive "Petrichor") and a rolling chunk of micro-house blessed with super-deep chord progressions (the aptly titled "Head Over the Clouds").

  4. Little White Lies (DBridge Tall Tales remix) (7:43)
Review: 18 months since they launched with a release from the legendary STL, Om:nia return with another highly respected artist, Shaun Soomro. Four tracks deep, once again we run the full gamut of the cosmos across the soundscapes. "Little White Lies" sets the vibe and pace as a hazy UKG cut with chugs and waves in all the right places. It's followed by an ambient oasis as "Forever Smiling" takes things right back to just the essentials: pure mood and tone. Finally Shaun wraps up his trio of originals by tapping into his London foundations and rolling out ghostly breakbeats on "Hope For Sorrow". As if that's not quite enough, Exit Records don dBrdige concludes this beautiful 12" with an Autonomic twist. Trust us, this is a promise you can keep.

Their latest release the 'West Side of Afrika' EP see's them land on Samosa Records, comprising of four tracks of Afro-centric house. From the spiritual life music of opening track "Guinee" to the uplifting sunshine vibe of "Faranah" with its uplifting group vocal harmonies, while closing cut "Beyla" is an evocative deep house number with the most killer bassline you will hear on a record this year. 24/7 Love Affair (VIP Edition)
Cat: LT 104. Rel: 24 Jun 20
  1. Niederbeat Gospel Dub (9:34)
  2. Feelin' Good (version) (5:01)
Review: Last year Local Talk offered up Soulphiction's latest album (his first for almost ten years) over three separate slabs of wax. Here they complete the package via a "VIP Edition" 12" single featuring a brand new cut and a previously unheard revision of album highlight "Feelin' Good". The simply titled "Version" mix of that on the flip is delicious, with the Philpot founder layering expansive piano motifs and dizzying solos over skippy, U.S garage-influenced beats and a warm, toasty bassline. Arguably even better though is the fresh cut, "Niederbeat Gospel (Dub)". Living up to its title, the track is a thickset chunk of bluesy gospel house dustiness built around swinging beats, beefy bass and layered vocal samples from a crackly old gospel recording.

Review: Sometime Sound Signature regular Specter (real name Andres Ordonez) should be regarded as a genuine underground hero: a talented and hard-working producer, whose regular vinyl missives are regularly a cut above the rest. For proof, check out this four-tracker on Brooklyn's Second Hand Records. He dives straight into spacey, off-kilter deep house warmth on the smooth but slipped opener "Peace of Mind", before wrapping more starry, spaced-out synths around a muddy bassline and hazy machine drums on "Front & Center". The B-side is all about "Cold Sweat", a minimalistic Larry Heard style emotive deep house number that's also successfully given a breezy-but-beefy makeover by remixer Byron The Aquarius.

Review: Ascendant Londoner Casey Spillman continues with his impressive run of releases, that have so far been seen on top imprints such as Infuse, 4plae and Beatniks London. He returns to his own Temperature imprint for the second installment, packed full of tripped-out afterhours boompty business, best heard on the infectious A side cut "C2C To Fenchurch St". On the flip, he sends the signal out loud and clear that the party is going well into Monday on the sunny and uplifting hypnotiser "Brickfields". This vocal -led number features a distinct UK garage style swagger throughout, said to be a big influence on Spillman.

  4. Acid Shuffle (Diego Krause remix) (6:33)
Review: Italian producer St. David has spent the past few years issuing some serious house tackle for the likes of Quality Vibe, Let's Play House and Theory Of Swing, and now he's up on Politics Of Dancing with some of his strongest jams to date. "Mind Power" is a driving peak time bomb with a lofty sense of spirituality lingering behind the thump of the drums. "Get Deepy" is unsurprisingly geared towards a mellower time of the night, but it's no slouch in the groove department. This is a Politics Of Dancing record after all. "Acid Shuffle" keeps the shimmering pads and marries them to a vintage drum machine jack, which Diego Krause reworks into a wholly different kind of tripped-out house wobbler.

Review: Berlin scene stalwart Nico Stojan is back on his respected Ouie imprint that he co-runs with Acid Pauli, with their seventeenth edition here. On the 'Cardano' EP you can sure bet that it is jam packed with glassy-eyed and bittersweet dancefloor narratives, as evident on the sublime title A side title track. Soothing melodies, warm bass and subtle rhythms underpin this melodic deep house journey throughout. On the flip, we have two more numbers aimed squarely at the Sunday morning dancefloor in the form of "Together" and "Inhale", the latter in particular will take you into the exotic with its chilled-out summertime island vibes.

Review: Australia's Subjoi has been having a jolly old time of late, slamming out hit after hit via Lost Palms, GASP and more. Now he comes to Lobster Theremin-affiliated Distant Hawaii to join the likes of Warwick, Sweely and East Of Eden in a retro house heatwave. While it may be classically-informed, Subjoi's sound is far from throwback - it's expressive, emotional club music plain and simple. Just stick on "Like It Was" and feel the lingering keys and vocal snippets taking you far, far away. There's a garage swing to "Drownin", while "Shelter Me" is dripping with moody New Jersey organs - the palette and energy shifts track to track making this as pleasurable for home listening as it is for the club.

Sunday's Edit 03
Cat: SE 03. Rel: 05 Aug 20
  1. Coral Capers (6:33)
  2. I'm Alright (7:51)
Review: Do we need yet another enigmatic imprint devoted to tech house makeovers of dance music classics? Well, this one's a fairly worthy addition! Following in the tradition of ODE, YYY, EEE and countless others, here's a new contender in the form of Montreal's Sunday's Edit, said to be affiliated with the RawMoments crew. After a hot sophomore release which featured elements of a certain Icelandic chanteuse and the King Of Pop, 'SE03' is more straight ahead. From the sunny and uplifting tech house tool "Coral Capers" which calls to mind the sounds of iO (Mulen) or Jack Wickham, while B side cut "I'm Alright" is a serving of sensual Stateside deepness. It sounds familiar, but we're not quite sure who it is, but we can tell you that it's perfect for those heads down moments on the dancefloor.

  4. Sei (Triptil remix) (7:25)
Review: Cedesciu Wax is a vinyl only label, owned and curated by the Miami based DJ and producer Lulla, that is dedicated to showcasing underground minimal house music. For their fifth release, they are showcasing the Argentine Szyszko's debut vinyl release. Mesmerising and ethereal tech house is the order of the day here, with tracks like "Reloj" calling to mind the work of Sublee, Alci or Camelia, while the lean and subtle mood music of "Sei" definitely takes it cues from the Rominimal scene. Speaking of which, two champions of that sound get onboard for some remixes of the tracks; Nu Zau's moody rework is one of his best pieces of music we have heard in a while, while the ascendant Triptil ventures into arcane territory.

Review: The cult and iconic Full Pupp label has been at the vanguard of the Scadi-sound for 15 years now. From indie licked to cosmic disco via melodic house and deep techno, the label has its own take on everything and this second anniversary marking EP is another rich gem. Telephones open with a humid jam that blurts genre-borders, Marius Vareid goes beautifully deep and late night on "Acidus" with its gently braking waves lit only by the moon, and Christian Engh pumps the party with his punchy and trippy "Schmoo". The boss himself Prins Thomas comes through with a disco house heater to close the party with style.

Review: More playable goodness arrives from Yoyaku's deep and dubby house offshoot, Joule Imprint, with previously unheard artist Teleruic at the controls. On the A-side you'll find two hugely attractive original productions: "Pulsalii Profunde", where tactile synth bass and melodious dream house elements cluster around a squeezable tech-house groove, and the hypnotic late night throb of "Dincolo De Oriezont", which is notable for its use of heavy analogue bass and rolling intergalactic riffs. Turn to the flipside for Samuel Andre Madsen's SAM Remix of "Pulsalii Profunde", which adds a little chunky late night bounce to an otherwise ultra deep and spacey tech-house take.

  1. Question Mark (KiNK mix feat Rachel Row) (8:25)
  2. Question Mark (Adam Port mix) (6:51)
Review: Earlier this year, Berlin duo Terranova returned with their first tangible output for some five years, delivering their fifth studio LP Hotel D'Amour on the evergreen Kompakt imprint. The Cologne label extends the Terranova listening party, electing to see how the album's opening track "Question Mark" can be manipulated by fresh minds. Much like Terranova have been out of the spotlight for a while, Bulgarian 303 botherer KiNK has been a bit quiet of late, so the sight of him adorning the A Side with a typically ripe revision of the track featuring Thomas Haffding is a welcome one! It's a remix worthy of KiNK's reputation too, deftly incorporating the tinkling melodic elements as well as Haffding's delicate voice amidst a tough, undulating ride through rollercoaster percussion and thick waves of bass. German producer Adam Port - known for a killer edit of The Weeknd - provides an equally fine remix on the flip, opting for a tougher groove that can only be described as relentless in its energy.

Review: The Joule imprint continues to wreak havoc on our charts, and this latest collaboration between brothers Matt and Mark Thibideau is exactly the right thing for you if you're looking for some effective house grooves. Matt Thibideau's first two tracks, "Evaporation" and "Time Stands" are both effortlessly punchy deep house bangers with a strong dub-techno presence at their core, deep in the lower ends of the tracks; Mark's two licks are no different, both similarly laying down heavy 4/4 punches with mounds of echo and dubwise filtering. Smooth and elegant DJ tools.

Review: Thomas Xu tends not to release much music, but when he does it tends to be musically rich, rhythmically complex and very, very good. That's certainly the case with "Places In Time", his second EP on Steady Flight following an inspired 2017 debut on Theo Parrish's Sound Signature imprint. There's much to set the pulse racing across the EP, from the heavily analogue, synthesizer-powered, intergalactic jazz-funk looseness of "Easin", and the slipped 21st century instrumental space-jazz of "Tired A Being Tired (What Are We Here For)", to the densely layered, piano-driven ambience of "Promise 2", and the hard-to-pigeonhole eccentricity of closing cut "Let's Go See Roy".

This Is A Dream
Cat: TURBO 207. Rel: 12 Aug 20
  1. This Is A Dream (8:32)
  2. Crushed By Meditation (8:29)
Review: Techno heavyweights Tiga and Matthew Dear team up again to follow up 2013's massive anthem "Let's Go Dancing" and the terrific 'Nightclub' EP from a few years back. Their new collaboration "This Is a Dream" is a tunneling and low-slung trip, which according to Tiga the Turbo chief is 'an epic poem, an immunity passport to the boundless dimensions that lay beyond the veil of slow wave sleep'. On the flip, "Crushed By Meditation" has Audion all over it on this strobed-out and psychedelic stomper that calls to mind the same vibe as his mid noughties hits such as "Mouth To Mouth" or "Kisses" - totally massive!

  2. Photon Dust (5:27)

  4. Just A Motion Away (5:19)
  5. Blurred Chase (4:50)
Review: Shall Not Fade boss KW has decided to launch a new "Season Series" sub-label featuring "music associated with the season of release" and matching coloured vinyl. Fittingly, the inaugural release delivers suitably sunny, summery deep house jams from Fine regular Tilman, naturally pressed on to marbled, sky-blue vinyl. Musically there's much to enjoy across the five tracks, from the jazzy, sample-heavy bounce of bumpin' opener "Nature Yourself" and the sweet, carnival-ready loop-house hedonism of "Photon Dust", to the drowsy, blue-eyed soul sampling afternoon warmth of "Just A Motion Away" and the yearning, flute-sporting dancefloor dreaminess of "Blurred Chase".
