Blue Print (12")
Cat: HF0096. Rel: 21 Dec 06
  1. Blueprint
  2. Hitchhiker Habits
Review: The very first release in Hardfloor's "Versus" series pits the acid legends against one of their peers, the mighty Rob Acid! Rob's track "Blue Print" is a stroke of genius. Iit takes you on a 13 minute acid ride complete with dark, sliding synth sounds and mind-altering drums - we kid you not! Hardfloor responds with "Hitchhikers Choice", taking it waaaaay back to the old school with that classic Hardfloor touch.

"Body Language Vol. 5" is a discerning, rich and tasteful celebration of the best in disco, techno, electro and house in all it forms and it's a joy to listen to, from start to finish. This is one Get Physical chartered flight you should not miss.

Review: Get Physical co-founder DJ T (aka Thomas Koch) releases his long awaited first solo 12" taken from his forthcoming album. 'Lucky bastard' jacks freshly along to the sound of a cut up vocal, glitchy percussion and deep building chords, with the fusion of futuristic and classic elements all welded together by a soaring bassline.

The Dawn (12")
Cat: GPM0716. Rel: 31 May 07
  1. The Dawn
  2. Jam Pot
Review: "The Dawn", by DJ T, is a moody, undulating cruiser of a track, which will make a dancefloor feel a sense of sunrise, whatever time of day or night. Busy, clicky percussion sets the scene for a full-bodied, rising, almost trancey bassline to take control. DJ T ups the intensity with real dancefloor nous and precision programming, layering distressed synth sounds and heavily treated keys atop each other while never losing sight of the track's fierce, fundamental groove. "The Dawn" builds and builds, by dropping out the percussion and the bassline, every departure and return is a heads-down, hands-aloft dancefloor moment. The crisp snares and rich, melodic notes of delay add even more depth to what is already an essential tune.

Zinga (12")

  1. Zinga
  2. Zinga (DRAMAdub)
  3. At De Stella
Review: Ever since they moved to the UK back in 2000 Italoboyz, aka Marco Donato and Federico Marton, have built a formidable reputation
in the fertile minimal techno scene of their adopted hometown, London. Their energetic DJ sets at Fesh are the stuff of local legend.
Their productions, meanwhile, have seen them gain notoriety around the world.
Now Italoboyz consolidate their position as dancefloor alchemists par excellence with a 12 inch for Berlin's Get Physical.
'Zinga' is every bit as hot as its title implies, and once again proves Italoboyz' knack for sourcing sounds usually foreign to the club
and then making the club wholeheartedly rock to them.

One more evidence, that he's one of Europe's finest new producers for this refreshing style of warm and melodic club tunes, pleasing the dance floors all over Europe, from The Hague to Berlin and back again.

Review: Colin McBean aka Mr G is back with another full length. We know what you're thinking; it's probably awesome? Well duh! Damn right it is, so here's more with the good news; several tracks of slamming tech funk that this man is renowned for and it's all killer. First track "Entrance" is the soundtrack to a techno aerobics class, take a listen! "Sub Level 3 (G's Freak Zone)" uses a nasty arpeggio untypical of his previous work but those strings that come in are just epic! "Interlude @ ?" keeps on with his typical sense of humour and in sound with its tough and dirty sense of funk that's so emotive at the same time. "Thrust" is proper peak time business that reminds you why he was once one half of The Advent; banging, doom laden hard groove.

  1. You In Or You Out? (Sims Jacker edit) (5:04)
  2. You In Or You Out? (7:22)
  3. Bring It! (5:22)
Review: Colin McBean is an unstoppable force at the moment isn't he! At the moment you say? Yeah too right; the guy never actually stopped his relentless pursuit of the perfect house and techno grooves since the '90s and this Conectionz EP is no exception. Starting things off in explosive fashion with the "You In Or You Out? (Sims Jacker edit)" with its relentless thud and crack of a 909 workout with funky bass and evil pads helped out by some generous reverb build ups; all you need really. The original version up next is more restrained deep house with that great vocal refrain repeating "live your life the way you wanna be free" the tracks aggression provided by those hissing rhythms. Finally "Bring It" is a soulful breakbeat number with soaring synth leads that is a great departure from McBean's normal style.

  8. Gravitation (9:01)
Review: Since meeting, and subsequently working with, Ron Trent in the early 1990s, Anthony Nicholson has produced some seriously sublime deep house. These days, his releases are less frequent than many would wish, but retain the kind of high quality threshold associated with the very best house producers. Gravity is his fifth full-length, and delivers a swathe of gorgeously rich and musically expansive tracks shot through with serious amounts of soul. While he rarely strays from the dancefloor, tracks are layered with delicious musical flourishes - twinkling piano playing, live percussion, guitars and bass, for starters - while you'll a range of complimentary influences (African rhythms, modern soul, jazz-funk, boogie, and so on). In other words, it's a proper, grown-up house album.

Islands (clear vinyl 12")
Cat: STYRAX PEAKSHIFT. Rel: 30 Jul 13
  1. South Exit
  2. Imaginary Numbers
Review: After some recent flirtations with some UK-centric bass sounds, Styrax return to what they do best with some deep, Detroit-informed house sounds from Peak Shift. Absent from the scene since his last release in 2002, Islands sees two of his finest tracks reissued on clear vinyl for a new generation of house fans. Despite a sound obviously rooted in the late '90s, the drifting pads and forcefull bassline of "South Exit" sounds remarkably fresh today, falling somewhere between classic Spectral Sound and Kompakt material and the more esoteric analogue house of today, while 2001 track "Imaginary Numbers" takes things into deeply trippy territory where minimal house meets ambient.

Review: Deep Transportation don Mike Huckaby teams up with Downbeat label gaffer Jose Rico for this EP made with a Waldorf WAVE Synthesizer. Rico's two efforts that adorn the A-Side have clearly been produced with intricate poise, making it all the more surprising that this is his debut release. Both "Restructure Again" and "About It" are lathered in subtle jazzy deep house chords and subtle yet immediate percussion. Flip over for "Mathematics From The Jazz Rebulic" from Mr Huckaby, who really gives the Waldorf what for. Killer release for the deep house purists.

  1. Education
  2. My Cave
  3. Jammin (feat Jus-Ed)
  4. Interupt (dub)
Review: Continuing the vinyl issue of Dana Ruh's debut LP, the high grade deep house just keeps coming on Naturally Part 2. "Education" keeps the energy levels up with some neat interplay between a bubbling, acidic bassline and soulful chord flourishes, all over a snappy 4/4 beat. "My Cave" deviates into more tripped-out broken beat business, all the while anchored by the most soothing of deep house chords. "Jammin" features Underground Quality label boss Jus Ed laying down some subtle vocal contributions which echo out over a smart spread of tones, before "D's Interupt (Dub)" displays the more experimental side to Ruh's output with an abstract beatless loop surrounded by gentle applications of texture.

  2. Earth People - "Dance" (club mix) (4:08)
Review: Pal Joey is a legendary New York house producer. Whatever alias he assumes - and there are many - you can be sure of real quality, and this 7" features two of his best: As Soho he offers the jazzy keys and funked up house loops of "Hot Music" which samples Wynton Marsalis's "Skain's Domain". On the flip, he becomes Earth People and serves up pure house joy on "Dance" with its ebullient vocal yelps, party starting sax lines and timeless chords. It's the sort of celebratory, end of the night weapon that will send people home in absolute raptures.

  4. Mind Methods (Dilated Pupils remix)
Review: Restraint is the name of the game on the first entry into Moral Fiber's vinyl series, which sees Romanian duo Vinyl Speed Adjust show just how little is needed to get the floors of Bucharest moving. "Semne" features a broken beat typical of the sound coming out of this corner of Eastern Europe, cyclical in nature and utterly refined in its pattering delivery. "Light Years" is equally stripped down, although the drums push out from the track with a more angular formation, while "Mind Methods" heads in the opposite direction for an even more minimalistic mantra made of the tiniest percussive sounds. Dilated Pupils does little to fill the track out with a remix that doffs its cap to the wispy quality of its source.
