Review: Last year, Whirlpool Productions' most renowned moment, throbbing 1996 jam 'From Disco To Disco', reappeared on 12". Here the track, which was produced and released by the trio of Justus Kohncke, hans Nieswandt and Eric D Clark (who provided the song's distinctive vocals) in 1996, transfers to 7" single for the very first time. It remains a fine chunk of disco-not-disco, with warming electric piano motifs and Clark's idiosyncratic vocals rising above a deep, throbbing, Italo-inspired bassline and crunchy house drums. This 45 edition also boasts what appears to be a previously unreleased instrumental edit, which does a fantastic job of building and releasing energy while giving the sometimes-wild Rhodes licks a chance to shine. A stone-cold classic!

Review: A striking debut EP from Tokyo artist Iori Wakasa; 'Botanica' is a psychedelic house EP unto its own, summoning the environmental/ambisonic ritualisms of his locale, but repackaging them into a thoroughly danceable deep tech aesthetic. It's a fusion sound which is quite rare in other contexts. Wakasa, also a DJ (and now label head) based in Japan, has more recently expanded his repertoire to performances in Indonesia, Vietnam, and South Korea, and we'd wager it's this wealth of experience that has informed on the impeccable sonic synergies of 'The Pure Land' and 'Lunar Down'.

Review: Chiwax are back this week with a more than welcome reissue of Wax Fruit's one-and-only release Whispers from 1994. This was one of many aliases sussed by Toronto-based producer Ron Allen, who some of you may know for his seminal work as one half of Psyance (with Hayden Andre Brown) who released on Plus 8, as well as his work under the names Aztech, The Apache Project and The R.A.S.E. The late night mood music of the title track is a true zeitgeist from the period in which it was released, while the looped-up disco sampling deep house of 'Just A Party' or 'Mindgames' over on the flip were equally as trendsetting as anything fellow Torontonians like Nick Holder or DJ Sneak were making at the time.

Review: Wisdom Wita Z aka LaShonda Corder hooks up with Dark Entries for a rare Detroit-adroit arsenal of new 90s-style house bangers. 'It's Me' was produced by DJ Maestro and DJ 001, both influential figures in the Detroit techno scene. The B-side, meanwhile, hears a retake from the adjacent DJ Resurgence. An anthem for owning and loving oneself, direct comparisons could be made to the diva vibes of Crystal Waters or CeCe Peniston, but Wita Z brings an entirely new character to the genre, with the production bringing a moodiness to the sound and giving neat contrast to her up-front vocals.

Review: When it comes to gospel-powered 21st century dance music, Detroit trio Dames Brown have been involved in many of the most memorable records - not least Sophie Lloyd anthem 'Calling Out' and Horse Meat Disco hook-up 'Message To The People'. Here they join forces with fellow Motor City musician Waajeed for another arms-aloft classic in the making. Review: Charles Webster's 2020 album Decision Time - the veteran East Midlander's first full-lengthi 19 years - was predictably good, but more downtempo and immersive than dancefloor-ready. This EP of remixes from the album is therefore long overdue. The EP-opening Dazzle Drums remix of 'This Is Real' is a luscious slab of jazz and bossa-tinged deep house soul perfection, while Jazuelle's 'Retro Rhapsody' version of 'Music' effortlessly joins the dots between laidback breakbeat, street soul and warming deep house sonics. Over on the flip, Mark E reimagines 'The Spell' as an analogue-rich chunk of gently dreamy deep house hypnotism, while 'Luciano' channels the spirit of Matthew Herbert's greatest micro-house productions on an undulating, soul-enriching full vocal take on 'Music'. Review: Entrepot Records label boss UC Beatz is back on his home imprint with a fine new joint EP. For this one he links up with Wldbtch for a record that was first mooted a decade ago. Back in 2020 the pari finally hooked up in the studio and cooked up a mix of influences and material including French spoken words, Turkish vocals, big bass and Latin flutes. They are fresh sources for a house record and lend the EP a unique vibe over heavy beats, more loopy French tough grooves and in the case of 'Lillio Scratch' twitchy tech house.

Review: A follow-up to last year's successful compilation 'Faith Presents: Ain't That A Groove', is given to us by the London-based label Faith ran by DJs Terry Farley, Stuart Patterson and Dave Jarvis. The high energy house party sound kicks off with Nolan who features the legendary house voice of Sir. Robert Owens. Hilit Kolet isn't shy with the extended remix of 'POV Siren'. This sound is synonymous with Feller and Heller DJ sets of the mid 90s. Philippa's extended remix of 'The Night' by Roach Motel backs that one up with another prime floor filler with hardly any let up. Lastly, Terry Farley, Wade Teo & Kameelah Waheed brings he deep groover "Dancing After Dark" to the party. These tracks will have you and the nightclub crowd out dancing all night.

Review: Heads High keeps up the good early work with a third interesting offering, this time in the form of a meeting of the fiendish minds of Mike Misiu and Eddie Smilie, aka Wednesday Club. They offer up late-night club sounds with plenty of musical nouse and worldly nuance that comes as a result of late-night sample mining across the African musical landscape. Their tunes are crafted on nice analogue gear so have that lovely freed edge feel and from the space-house of 'Magic Body' to the swaggering dub of 'Magic Dub' via the cosmic expressiveness of cruising groover 'Love & Care'. This one gets dubbed out to close a fine dancefloor adventure.

Review: Todmorden quartet Working Men's Club have long held a soft spot for Sheffield, with much of their music being recorded in the city under the watchful eye of producer Ross Orton. It makes perfect sense, then, that they'd commission an EP full of reworks from Steel City producers. Toddla T kicks things off in fine fashion via a rave-igniting, dancehall-tinged SoYo bass rendition of 'Money Is Mine' tailor-made for the city's Kabal parties, while bleep & bass godfathers Forgemasters deliver a drowsy, atmospheric, post-industrial deep house tweak of 'The Last One'. Elsewhere, Diseasa opts for an angular, industrial electro flex on a fuzzy re-wire of 'Rapture', Orton squelches his way through a tough-as-steel acid house remake of 'Plays', and Charla Green gives 'Fear Fear' a dystopian post-jungle makeover.

Review: How cheeky do you want it? The Hedzup crew have been transmitting crafty-as-hell minimal house from Paris to the world for many a year now, and they're not letting up in their quest to inject some freaky fun into the club. This latest drop is another split from label main men Mancini and Wlad, leading in with the former's 'Cure Hater' which bounces into ear shot with an irrepressible groove and plenty of wriggling noises snaking around the mix. Nu Zau then steps up with a remix which tips the ingredients into a tougher, 90s-styled beatdown without losing any of that heads down energy you expect from a Hedzup release. Wlad brings a shimmering sophistication to the chords on 'Lucky Star' without losing that naughty rhythm section, giving Floog plenty to work with for a remix which heads further into techy territory.

Review: Fresh from an appearance on the excellent Rush Hour Amsterdam All Stars compilation, Simon Weiss breaks free with a debut solo release on the Hometaping imprint. A label that has provided a boost to many a producer's profile, Weiss is likely to countenance a few remix and booking requests off the back of the sumptuous sounds here, not least the title track "Yesterday Is Around". Very much influenced by the likes of Parrish and Dixon Jnr, there is an undeniable warmth to the expertly looped strings and delicate vocal sample that will turn many an ear, whilst the rhythms and textures are delightfully fuzzy. Alongside it Weiss flexes his percussive muscle on the expertly poised beatdown of "Bird Movement" which is notable for some excellent pitch shifted melodics, whilst "Body Signature" is delightfully sloppy. Best Hometaping release in ages!

Review: Philly native Josh Wink is still as relevant as ever, partially because he didn't just spend the decades after his breakout hit 'Higher State of Consciousness' trying to recreate the same thing. He has landed on several well-regarded labels, though mostly on his own 30-year-old Ovum, and here heads to House of eFunk for a new EP that taps into his nostalgic feelings of house from years gone by. Review: When it was initially released nine years ago, The Stalwart marked Detroit house legend Rick Wade's first appearance on Rawax offshoot Housewax. Wade's standards are high - he seems incapable of releasing mediocre music - but even then, The Stalwart is extra special. For proof, check out the classic deep house warmth and shuffle of opener 'The Hawk' - all languid electric piano motifs, sturdy drums, spacey stabs and toasty bass - and the marginally funkier and more spacey sounding lusciousness of 'Dream Flute'. Elsewhere, 'Just Want' sees Wade smother a hypnotic, analogue-rich groove in sustained chords, drowsy Rhodes licks and yearning trumpet solos, while 'Proving Ground' achieves a perfect balance between immersive deepness and driving dancefloor energy.

Review: The second release for the Inner Shift music group comes as four track various artists EP. First up is Mick Welch with his second outing, supplying some deep and Chicago rhythmic house, eloquently introducing an acid bass line later on the piece, which he then breaks down further with jacking drum patterns of the John Heckle variety. It's also Rai Scott's second outing and he opts for movie soundtrack horns, synths, and subtle tribal percussions that give "Beyon Earth's Atmosphere" that little extra push. Miles Sagnia adds some distinguished weight to the EP alongside Brad Peterson, with Sagnia flirting with trancey elements in "Tears of Saturn", while Peterson strips his mix back with raw kicks, softened by hollow tribal drums and spacey synths.

Review: Westcoast Goddess is an enigmatic producer who betrays a love of 90s house and tech and golden-era r&b on this fresh new EP for Intrinsic Rhythm. It has done so over the last 13 years and now makes that occasion by doing what it does best - serving up timeless club sounds that mix under many different subgenres. This is another feel-good offering from four of the label's talents or as the label puts it, "producers that we love and respect." There is funky bass and soulful vibes from the Soul Renegades opener, Wipe The Needle's 'Light Years Away' is a more serene cosmic journey and The James L'Estraunge Orchestra offer a broken beat and jazzed-up dancer in 'Broken Spells.' Nico Lahs brings some cuddly depths to his slow-mo house jam 'Happenstance.'

Review: A top value for money opportunity here, as Moiss Music deliver the latest in their sweet and sticky Jam series of various artist 12" line ups, bringing you no less than six bubbling, vivacious disco triumphs from six artists. Khemir's 'Disco Bandit' kicks off proceedings, a production that sounds like it was made by a band of around 45 musicians, a proper cavalcade of strings, brass, brazen disco thump and beautifully bold vocals. Wurzelholz's 'Prince' goes for a bit more economy but with a slinky funk bassline like that - not to mention the occasional exclamation from the purple overlord himself - it's equally devastating in dancefloor terms. Among the other highlights, 'Golden' by I Gemin has the feel of a lost Daft Punk flip tune and Cosmocomics' 'Glamorous Garcon', boasting 70s-style synth bubbles that are as cute as they are retro. Tasty as ever.

Review: Most of the cuts showcased on the latest EP from Kai Alce's NDATL label - released in cahoots with Makin' Moves - have previously only been available digitally, while the others have never appeared at all. For that reason alone, the 12" is well worth checking out. Alce begins by offering up his warm, soulful and groovy vocal revision of Emdee Brown's "Again", before treating us to two versions of DJ Kemit and the Lounge Lizards' "Wake Up Stand" - a righteous vocal take and a "Hardubb" that brilliantly recasts it as a rolling late night bumper. Over on side B you'll find the broken beat/deep house fusion of Alce's rub of Malik Alston's "Promise Me Love" and a baggy, soulful and lilting rework of "Rise Up" by Wipe The Needle.

Review: Baby Ford and Dazmos take the limelight on this first release on Nice 1. We Are Syd's original "Gently" is a mellow downtempo roller featuring choice vocals from Shea Seger, but it's the remixes here that get pride of place. Ford and Dazmos lock into an understated drum machine funk draped in hazy pads on the A side "Backroom Mix", while on the flip they push the club elements to the forefront. Riding the rhythm section with intent while still retaining the smoky spirit of the original, the pairing come up with an impeccable "Frontroom" club cut that should nestle comfortably into the bags of all deep digging house heads.

Review: Church co-head Seb Wildblood presents his latest release titled 'Vitara 3000', boasting three masterfully crafted tracks that effortlessly blend a nostalgic sound with broken beats and dreamy melodies. The EP, released via Istanbul-based label Oath, was a result of his new creative space in Los Angeles after moving from London. The high-energy tech house of 'Floor Science' kicks off the EP, while the slinky and hypnotic title track takes listeners on a blissful journey with euphoric vocals. Over on the second side, the euphoric 'Re-location.zip' radiates new beginnings with its elevating chords and snappy breakbeats, fuelled by Wildblood's new studio gear.

Review: The legacy of one of Berlin's most famous disco spots Paloma Bar is now entrenched, thanks to its existence for several decades already, not to mention its incubation of pedigree DJs and musicians such as one Daniel Wang. Twenty years of activity on the scene and knowledge has been poured into Wang's latest EP for the institution's new record label, straddling four versions of the track DSDN - an ode to Berlin's nocturnal party community. Acid creaks, crude piano riffs, and massive gated drums are the order of the day, conveying the relaxed yet energetic mood of the city at night.

What better way to mark the commencement of its third decade, then, than with some new music? 20 Years Of Phonica: Sampler 3 pulls together artists from the electronic vanguard, starting with Paramida & E-Talking's 'Read My Lips' which is an acid-laced 90s techno revival. Dauwd's 'Slam' is stripped back and pulses with acid and Daniel Avery's 'Bell' is languid, melodic and gorgeously serene techno. Willow's 'Willbush' is a skeletal minimal rhythm with some nice wobbly bass weight.

Review: On the latest missive from his energy packed Power House imprint, Rene Pawlowitz - he of Shed and Head High fame - has chosen to showcase tracks from two of his lesser-celebrated alter egos, WK7 and Zigg Gonsalezz. As befits the peak-time ready, party-starting nature of the label, A-side 'Wait' offers an addictive blend of bustling, beefed-up house drums, glassy-eyed female vocal samples and sleazy, rave-igniting riffs. Over on the flip we get two distinctive takes on 'Sunday': the classic New Jersey garage meets Nu Groove style deep house warmth of the '3pm' version, and a stomping late night revision (entitled 'Work It') that peppers a chunky, extra-percussive beat with tight electric piano stabs and booming bass.

Review: You can always count on Public Possession to put out quirky, ear-catching gear for switched on dancefloors. On this occasion they've tapped up Wolfram and Josh Ludlow for this tongue-in-cheek acidic stomper which is roundly defined by the robotic narrator demanding we go back and forth to the club ad infinitum. It's cheeky and a tonne of fun, with a deadly 707-toting beat to back it up, presented in snappy edited form on the A-side and stretched out in extended form on the flip. If you want to get the party popping off with a glint in your eye, this is just the record you need.
