Review: When Boston pair John Barera and Will Martin first appeared on Steffi's Dolly Tracks label last year, their brand of impeccably produced classicist house music felt right at home. Since that contribution to a split 12", Barera and Martin have become increasingly part of the Dolly family with a full 12" release earlier this year now complemented by Graceless, both the duo's and the label's debut LP. Some eight tracks deep, Graceless comes across as a masterclass in modern, punchy house music filled with soul with plenty of variety in tone and feel shown throughout. A very strong offering from Barera and Martin that is likely to be a record the busier house selectors pull for again and again.

Phillip Sollmann & Marcel Fengler's Din collaboration provide some of the more experimental highlights with the Dettmann-esque "Aetas" and the industrial ambience "Creation" and "Generation", while as you'd expect Henrik Schwarz delivers splashes of flamenco, classical music and rocky pop to the compilation that's unrivalled in production by any other producer making techno.

Review: Over the years, Ron Trent has released some fine albums, all of which have subtly expanded on his trademark soul-flecked, percussion-rich deep house sound. On What Do The Stars Say To You, his first new full-length excursion in 11 years, the Chicago native has taken a different approach, utilising his occasional WARM alias on a stunning set that abandons dancefloor-pleasing in favour of immersive, evocative and ultra-deep blends of ambient, downtempo, jazz-funk and electronica. It's a genuinely brilliant album all told, with a string of impressive guest musicians - including Ivan Conti and Alex Malheiros of Azymuth, electric jazz pioneer Jean-Luc Ponty, psychedelic Balearic specialists Khrungbin and Italian ambient maestro Gigi Masin - all making brilliant contributions. In a word: exceptional!

In line with his more eclectic output, What Do The Stars Say To You heralds his WARM project in a frankly stunning burst of musicality that harks back to the glory days of 70s and 80s studio prowess. This is still music driven by a groove, but it's certainly not a house by numbers affair. Instead you get soaring violin solos (from Jean Luc Ponty no less), infinte threads of nimble keys work and enough downtempo, slinky grooves to buffet a yacht from the Balearics to the Florida Keys and back again. Featuring members of Azymuth, Gigi Masin and Khruangbin amongst others, this is a return to the craft of exquisite album making, as handled by a true master in his field.

Review: On its original release back in 2017, Samuel Walker and Gavin Royce's collaborative debut album won plenty of plaudits. Listening back to this white vinyl repress, it's easy to hear why. It contains a wealth of fuzzy, bass-heavy and tech-tinged club cuts, with highlights including a handful of wonky, bass-heavy, tech-tinged hip-house mutations (see 'Role Models', 'My Own Thang' and 'Love and Marriage'), the Switch-esque 'Best Track Ever', the thrillingly twisted, mind-mangling 'Warkin' It', and a sleazy, fuzz-fuelled peak-time workout featuring the stone cold legend that is Green Velvet. In other words, if you're looking for weighty, angular and off-beat club workouts, the album doesn't disappoint.

Review: After initially reserving much of his music for his own Tartan label, Wallace has been on plenty of fine sojourns to other top labels of late including CWPT's from Palms Trax, Studio Barnhus and Rhythm Section. Now he makes his biggest statement yet with a double album on Mule Musiq that draws on everything in his arsenal. His deft melodic touch and innocent synth work defines the first couple of clean and airy cuts while his knack for an unusual rhythm defines the loopy and hypnotic 'Midnight On The Mountain,' 'By The River' is a gorgeous deep house cut with eastern melodies and 'Bubbles' is pure dreaming material for zoned out sessions. A fine work from the talented Wallace.

Review: Walt Ever is Frankfurt based Phil Evans, who heads up the local Pager Records and good buddy Tiago Walter aka Bob Waltner. There certainly is something in the water in the Rhein-Main area which is resulting in a truckload of wicked underground house and techno at present - and these guys are no exception. 1-069-PAGE-ME is Evans' new sublabel and this album is the outcome of them reminiscing of good times - goofing off while roommates and 'living that Freizeit lifestyle.' Freizeit Amigos features eight killer jams which take their inspiration from classic house sounds of early '90s Chicago, Detroit and beyond. The funky minimalist grooves of "Brooklyn Bounce" or "True Skul" are the kind of jams you'd expect the local Traffic crew or likewise Berlin's Libertine mob to thrash out.

Review: The Perlon and Mule Musiq-associated Wareika trio show off their considerable skills once more here with an effortless blend of electronic and organic sounds across two extended pieces. There is one on each side on Tizinabi and each is rooted in dub and house but embellished with classical instruments such as guitar and piano. The flow here is unreal as new melodies, moods and grooves unfurl before your very ears and Wareika keeps on threading together hypnotic synth lines and smooth percussion into ever more compelling sonic tapestries. A perfect excuse to drop the needle on the record, tune in and zone out of the real world.

Review: Progressive house hero Nick Warren has enjoyed a long and fruitful relationship with Australian imprint Balance, delivering his first contribution to their ongoing mix series way back in 2011. His latest two-disc selection is subtitled "The Soundgarden" and is every bit as colourful, healthy, green and calming you'd expect. It's rooted in the dancefloor of course, but his choices of tunes tend towards the atmospheric, highly melodious and ear pleasing end of the tech-house, progressive house and deep house genres. It makes for a hugely entertaining and easygoing listen, with even the album's occasional darker diversions failing to interrupt the blissful and tuneful flow.

Review: NDATL owner Kai Alce has been responsible for some of the most musically expansive deep house of recent years, so you'd expect this sneaky double-album of previously unheard revisions to be pretty darn hot. It is, of course, with Alce offering up sublime takes on tracks by modern greats Kamasi Washington and Gregory Porter. Check first his gently breezy and sun-kissed Latin house take on Washington's "Askim", before reveling in the hot-stepping jazz-funk/Afro-house fusion of Alce's revision of Porter's "On My Way To Harlem". Over on the second disc, Alce offers alternative instrumental and edited versions of these headline-grabbing remixes. The "Thundercat Dub" of "Askim" is particularly alluring, though we've also been enjoying the ten-minute, solo-heavy "Extended Instrumental" of "On My Way To Harlem". Superb.

Review: It sure has been a long time coming but finally Vince Watson is back with a new album that follows up his well regarded debut from some 20 odd years ago, Biologique, and sophomore effort Moments In Time. Another Moment In Time is a rich house exploration with a tendency towards the deep and always magical melodies. It's timeless and tasteful material that is all expertly arranged and executed from the gentle piano joys of 'Peace Of Mind' to the reflective and jazzy chords of 'Lost In The Deep'. One of the cuts, 'Rendezvous' has appeared in a different form on Carl Craig's Planet E but here gets a 'Finale' version that brings classic house drums with widescreen synth work and warm chord vamps.
