I Choose You
I Choose You (double 12")
Cat: VR 170. Rel: 15 Dec 16
I Choose You (Louie Vega Dance Ritual mix) (11:23)
I Choose You (Louie Vega Mid Tempo mix) (9:17)
I Choose You (Louie Vega dub) (8:47)
I Choose You (Vega Tosca Solo Mid Tempo mix) (8:48)
Review: "I Choose You" was initially featured on Foreign Land, the debut album from gospel-soul trio 3 Winans Brothers. Two years on, Louie Vega has decided to give it the remix treatment, serving up four versions across two slabs of wax. He begins with the Dance Ritual Mix, where the trio's smooth vocals - and the impassioned backing singing of Karen Clarke Sheard - ride a shuffling, Latin-influenced house groove. The Mid Tempo Mix offers a musically richer, groovier interpretation, while the Dub focuses more on Clarke Sheard's diva style vocalizing, jazzy piano solos, and Vega's tasty, floor-friendly beats. Speaking of solos, the Masters of Work man cannily brings them to the fore on the closing Axel Solo Mid Tempo Mix.

I Choose You (Vega Tosca Solo Mid Tempo mix) (8:48)
Review: The 3 Winans Brothers served up their Foreign Land album, from which this single is taken, in 2014. But it could as well as be from any of the proceeding three decades. It is life-affirming gospel, soul and r&b that makes perfect fodder for a remixer like Louie Vega. The gorgeous backing vocals remind in place, as do the main male voices, but the drums are either drawn out and made all the more soulful or shorted up and energised for the club across these four superb mixes. House music doesn't come more authentic or stirring than this. 838848-01

Review: Debutants 4D & Krunky create ravey and funked-up minimal techno, taking its cues from early Detroit techno and northern bleep styles. The grooves to be heard on the Humanoid label's are as cute as the label art: from the strobed-out shuffle 'n' roll of 'Oplescot', to the west coast breaks of 'Stunt Bubble' calling to mind the mid '90s sounds of Northern California, and the hyper aware boompty boomp of closer 'Seasaw'.

Review: Muddy, dreamy and dubby new dance cuts from THREADS, who invite four of their mainstays to the fore with a dry and entraining take on trance. Kebab Traume (in English, 'Kebab Dream') wafts a mouth-watery cylinder of sonic meat under our noses with 'Nova Trance', which melds stabs, basses and kicks with all the certainty of a honey badger. Meanwhile, Mario Liberti's 'Treat Me Good' urges us to do just that via the mode sultry sampled vocals and funk bass whirls.

Yossi Amoyal Presents Fluere IV
A1 People - "Do It" (Metamatics remix)
Kosmogonik - "Circuitry"
Silicon Scally - "Relay"
Matt Chester - "November Pathways"
CiM - "Recursive"
Review: Since Zip and Villalobos made it one of their coveted deep digs to be heard pealing out of a thousand after hours sessions, the Metamatics remix of A1 People has been a teasingly out of reach dream grab for many a minimal electro head. Now Yossi Amoyal has done the good deed of getting the track remastered and repressed as part of his Fluere series toasting 15 years of Sushitech. As well as that masterclass of elegant machine funk, there's also Kosmogonik's mind-bendingly brilliant 'Circuitry', Silicon Scally's body-popping electro-noir 'Relay' and Matt Chester's melancholic 'November Pathways' to keep your up-all-night marathon sets peppered with spangled surprises.

Acasual - "Her"
Tominori Hosoya - "Thinking Of The Days"
Kiddmisha & Apoena - "Dancin"
Jonno & Tommo - "Mystic Feelings"
Review: The latest offering on Owen Jay's Batti Batti label features a cast of characters doing different but equally excellent things within the realm of deep house. Acasual is up first, presenting a reflective tour through lingering chords and swirling pads perfect for rainy spring days, while Tominori Hosoya goes one further with the soul-stirring ambience of "Thinking Of The Days". Kiddmisha & Apoena set light to the B-side with the restrained but utterly on-point depth charge "Dancin", and then Jonno & Tommo round the record out with the sultry "Mystic Feelings", making this a complete package of high grade house music from the heart.

Review: Here's a big tribal banger that'll certainly be giving the drum heads what they need. Two tracks on this one, with the a-side "Slave Drum Your Face" mix loaded with nasty percussion, seriously sultry female vocals and dark bass hits slamming the groove all over the place. Dark, sexy house that'll certainly bring the floor to climax. On the flip the "Miami Mix" has a more techy, electro edge balancing, out the tribal beats. Pounding, dark house that'll work nicely for the Calderone and Chus & Ceballos heads.

Review: Now three releases deep; new Finnish indie Mood Of The Era is really hitting its stride now with its first six-track V/A EP. Digging into the foundations, each cut resonates with timeless textures and aesthetics; "Let Me Tell You" swaggers with a broken shuffle and an iconic vocal sample, "Life In The FCP" resonates with old acid house sentiments while "Forgotten Lands" is perfect iced-out introspection with atmospheric classic electro elements. Meanwhile on the flip "Finally I Saw You" is a cosmic sci-fi soul whirlwind, "Syvael" bumps and shakes with a stumbling post-garage two-step and DOS closes the show with an authentic homage to the warehouse golden era on "1990". Get in the mood.

Review: When it comes to producing deep, sophisticated, musically rich deep house, few are quite as capable as Kai Alce. Even so, there's still something extra-special about "Take A Chance", a thoroughly deep, soulful and lilting excursion full of rolling, African-influenced percussion, eyes-closed trumpet solos and warm, evocative vocals. Alce's hero Larry Heard provides the remixes, firstly under his given name (a typically deep, soulful and dreamy interpretation) and secondly as Mr Fingers. It's these "Ambient Acid" versions - built around restless, lopped electronics and the original's sublime trumpet - that really stand out. Brilliant from start to finish.

Review: Bringing one of those vocals that will be nagging in the noggin long after the lights have come up; Ali Love and Kali are in prime pop-picking mode with this new single on Crosstown Rebels. The structure of the track is still in keeping with the label's slick take on house music; while the vocals intone a message of massaged ego that translates smoothly to Waze & Odyssey's more brooding remix. Maceo Plex comes in with a more romantic vision for the track, laying out thick reams of synth in a seductive late night style that can bleed outwards to fill a space large or small.

Review: Kai Alce's faultless NDATL label brings us more goodies direct from his base in Atlanta, which might be best known for its rap but also packs a punch when it comes to house music. This one is from Rasheeda Ali, a new name that might be familiar to anyone who heard Kai's 'Sheed's Move' tune from a previous EP. She has also been on stage with none other than Jeff Mills and here her flute skills come to the fore with production from Kai. 'Libra Ascending' has a snappy bounce, then 'Sheed's Rising' showcases Rasheeda's gymnastic flautist abilities. A fine debut.

Review: Adrien Calvert is building up a presence in that cheeky, chunky 90s revival happening around minimal tech house at the moment, and his Stay At Home label is becoming a hot bed of fresh and fruity house jams. Take this VA release as a fine case in point, welcoming the bulbous acid strutter 'Satisfied' by Aline Umber to shake its shoulders next to Calvert's own playful deep house joint 'The Foil'. Latent takes things space-wards on the B side with 'Interstellar Object' before Karaba completes the picture with the crafty beats and synapse-tickling synth delights of 'Loop Da Loop'.

Review: This new 12" from High Fashion sure has the potential to become a popular hit on the more commercially minded dance floors out there. It's a mega-mash-up with ALOK, Never Dull, Kenny Dope featuring Ella Eyre and cult 90s vocalists Crystal Waters all featuring. The result is a nice deep house cut with classic neon chords and hooky vocal samples recognisable to all. There is an extended mix for more drawn our pleasures on the floor and the original version. HDV - "Digital Delight" (5:44)
Kosh - "The Mess" (5:08)
Review: Sounds Benefit founder Tom Joyce cast his net far and wide when sniffing out cuts to include on the label's latest multi-artist EP. There's plenty of little-known talent on show across the four tracks that make-up the EP, which come from artists based in Frankfurt, Paris and - most surprisingly - Casablanca. We're particularly enjoying the hybrid electro/spacey tech-house bounce of Peter Raw's wonderfully swinging "Brotherhood", though the deep and melodious electro bounce of Kosh's "The Mess" is also really rather good. Elsewhere, Manuel Schatz and Rob Amboule offer up some bold and snappy Motor City techno/acid house fusion, while HDV's "Digital Delight" is raw, analogue, funky and decidedly alien in tone.

Review: The West Country hook-up between Appleblim and Komon has been drawing heat since last year when the pair jumped on the Gas Jam / Silencio for the former's Apple Pips label. Since then they've been remixed by Prins Thomas and gravitated naturally towards Will Saul's Aus label. The turn of a New Year saw the pair enter Jupiter for Aus and now they are back on the label experiencing Motion Blur. Intriguingly the A Side features collaborations whilst the flip finds Appleblim and Komon dropping solo jams. Vanilla Imitate
Review: Hotflush switch the focus to the next generation of talent bubbling out of the forever fruitful Bristol area, welcoming mans like Arkist and Kidkut for a double drop of try and pin a genre on it electronic excellence. Both have impressed our ears with independent goodness for Apple Pips amongst others, and the decision to lock thought processes in the studio has clearly paid off, hitting the right note from the very first few seconds of "One Year Later". Typical West Country approaches to rolling rhythms are present, yet it's the sombre, searching tone that arises and locks hold which truly impresses. Pretty much sounds like Larry Heard if he grew up in the St Pauls area! Complementing this, "Vanilla State" lays slick vocal edits and frosted textures over glitched out swinging drum patterns, and operates with bass warmth cranked up to eleven.

Review: Jack's House is back with another wedge of crucial cuts from a spread of big hitters, kicking off with Alex Arnout and the tightly wound roller "Hypersomnia." Tuccillo is in a heads down mood on "Another Day," letting the drums and the bassline do the brunt of the work. Terry Francis favours a heavy, smoky sound palette that has a bassline that will do some serious damage on a decent system - "Jua" is easily the strongest track on the record. Killan Vega closes the record with a smart deep house jam peppered with crafty sound design elements that lift the track beyond the average chord-led workout.

Review: Given their combined talents, you'd expect any collaborative album crafted by Andrew Ashong and Kaidi Tatham to be nigh-on essential. Happily, we can confirm that Sankofa Season, their first joint album, is ruddy, bloody brilliant (as Alan Partridge might say). Richly soulful, quietly jazzy and wholeheartedly positive from start the finish, the set sees them jump between deep jazz-funk, hazy contemporary soul, jazzy broken beat, breezy Latin soul, organic deep house and immersive, slow-motion soundscapes. Throughout, Tatham's organ, keyboard and piano work is highly impressive and Ashong's vocals are every bit as sumptuous as usual. Recommended.

It has done plenty of good work in the world of electro recently but here it goes back to deep house from a fine rabble of artists. Review: Those who've followed Alex Attias' career over the last two decades will tell you that he's always been capable of crafting the kind of jazzy, soulful, life-affirming fare more readily associated with UK broken beat producers. He's at it again on "I Wanna Know", a deliciously warm and sultry slab of dancefloor soul rich in samba-fired house beats, fluid piano lines (provided, we think, by Kid K), drowsy chords and a killer lead vocal from Georgia Anne Muldrow. Over on side B, Attias strips out most of Muldrow's vocal on a Dub Mix that rightly layers up the beats, emphasizes the track's jazzy horns and virtually bathes in the liquidity of its jazz-funk synths.

He's assembled another crack team of international contributors, too. Autre and Xinner join forces on opener "Nebula", a fine combination of low-slung techno drums, restless electronics and deep space sonics. Autre goes solo to deliver the fluttering, late night hypnotism of "Seiryu", before Kryptic Universe steals the show with "01309 Stairways", a superb chunk of rolling intelligent techno that features an extended ambient intro. Kevin Di Serna - "Lucero Del Alma" (6:52)
Review: After a two-year hiatus, the "Watergate Affairs" series returns with an EP of tracks from what the legendary Berlin label describes as "talent from outside the crew's immediate circle". Danish duo Baime step up first with the humid late night techno exotica of "Majka" - all Indonesian percussion, snake charmer synths and Teutonic grooves - before Kadosh offers up the melodious tech-house/deep-house fusion of "Better Days". Turn to the flip for a dash of quietly euphoric White Isle tech-house goodness from Ibiza-based Kintar ("Paradisou") and the extra-percussive throb of Kevin Di Serna's "Lucero Del Alma", where evocative electronic lead lines bubble above moody bass and pulsating synthesizer motifs.

Here & Now
Names Like?
Keep It Deep
Daye Revisit
Review: Here is a timely reissue from Nite Grooves, shedding light on one of the lesser known gems in Kerri Chandler's back catalogue from no less than twenty years ago. "Here & Now" is everything you would want from a Chandler joint, with a sturdy beat rounded out by soulful keys and a powerful lick of vocal, with little need for much more. "Names Like?" is a more airy cut with a jerky groove, triggering an abstract line in African samples at a time when experimentation was high. "Keep It Deep" is a more accessible kind of house jam that will appeal to any lover of Chandler's ways, while "Daye Revisit" takes things on a more subtle but no less pumping deep house ride.

Beaner - "Maledicta, The Mutiny"
Khrom Ju - "The Ship"
Skirtchaser - "Splice The Machine"
Review: After making their presence felt with the lavish packaging of their first release, the La Mission crew joins forces again with all the characters present for another well-presented journey through leftfield house and ambient compositions. Beaner's "Maledicta, The Mutiny" is the most direct of the offerings, working a mournful cello line and forlorn piano chords over a crisp tech-house rhythm while alien vocal samples inject the weird factor into the track. Krohm Ju meanwhile ditches beats in favour of a bass-laden experimental piece rich in compositional clout, as layers of arpeggios and lingering chords work to create a stirring piece. Skirtchaser then rounds the proceedings off with a low slung deep house affair with a scuffed beat and evocative found sound that feels like a brisk Sunday afternoon in autumn rolled into gently pulsing rhythm.

Byron The Aquarius - "Sun Gods" (5:37)
Review: People Of Earth strides into the New Year with a new project called The Elements Series. Part one welcomes some serious names, not least Detroit's ambient and techno master John Beltran who kicks off with 'Nuyorico' a joyous, chord-laced house groove laden with organic percussion. Javonntte's 'Tropical Feelings' is another of his textbook deep house cuts with whispered vocals bringing a spiritual vibe. Atlanta's main man Kai Alce does his do with the jazzy synth energy of shuffling house cut 'Benefit' (NDATL instrumental mix) then Byron The Aquarius pairs things back to dusty drums and humid chords on 'Sun Gods'. This one is only for the real heads.

Come On Now (6:20)
Review: B2 Recordings rolls out more of its quality-assured deep house here with Label head Bengoa stepping up next for a new three-tracker that comes with featured guests Kristina Berger and Brothers' Vibe. 'Idyot' kicks off with deep and pulsing synths and clacking hits that bring an early Chicago vibe next to the libidinous and erotic vocals which really tease. 'Meet Me Halfway' sinks into a super silky groove that is deep as you like and driven by stylish drum hits under a muttered vocal. 'Come On Now' then sinks into a more acid-laced atmosphere with sustained chords keeping you on edge next to loose and jumbled percussion. It's a stylistically diverse EP, this one.

Review: Rebirth kicks off its 2024 with a remix EP that serves as "a tribute to the Brescian music scene in its many facets and declinations." The full original project is a complete 12-track album that brings together many different sounds, scenes and generations, with the best bits now assembled on this new 12". The revered deep house master Fred P opens up with some texture spiritual synth depths, K-Lone brings some nice house swing to his version of 'Paline' and edit maestro Rahsaan also keeps it paired back and late night on his soulful take on 'Scent Of An Old Life'. A great reimagining of some moving musical adventures, then.

One Night Stand (Fabio Monesi remix)
Review: Bringing a simmering and sultry brand of deep house to the table, Swink has everything you need to get the night greased up and grooving. Nick Beringer is in a bumping New Jersey mood on "Win My Heart", draping the drums in haunting tones and bluesy chords for an alluring end result. Manuel Regnet keeps things crisp and functional for his remix, stripping back to a more slimline beat and letting a more punchy bassline through to the foreground. Kid Mark is feeling a bit rougher with his pumping "One Night Stand", but still the pads and vocal licks keep things soulful. Fabio Monesi meanwhile twists the B1 up into a delirious jam filled with the distant clamour of a crowd and light, airy drums for a truly uplifting experience.

Review: Biesmans' contribution to Watergate's mix series is made up entirely of his own previously unreleased productions, most of which were made in cahoots with friends and other like-minded artists. Because of this, the German label has decided to release two extensive vinyl samplers featuring the cream of these cuts. The Belgian indie-dance stalwart is in fine form throughout the first of these, with our picks of a very strong bunch including the new wave-tinged, cosmic-minded Shubostar hook-up 'Across The Universe', Zombies In Miami-sporting nu-disco throb-job 'Smooth Monday', breakbeat-driven neo-rave anthem 'All Day Every Day' and the EP-closing 'Away', where doP member Vandesande helps Biesmans channel the spirit of Vangelis' much-loved Bladerunner soundtrack.

Review: On his contribution to Watergate's mix series, Biesmans has decided to showcase his own tracks, and mostly a dizzying array of previously unheard collaborations with some seriously talented producers. It makes sense then that the German imprint has decided to show off the best of these across two vinyl samplers, of which this is the second. It's a great collection all told, with opener 'Quantum Computing' - a bumping piano-house hook-up with one of his musical heroes, Mathew Jonson - and the effortlessly funky nu-disco workout 'Me Gusta Acid', co-produced by Kid Simius, standing out. Elsewhere, solo cut 'Hipster Paradise' and Johannes Albert collaboration 'Luft' are also well worth a listen.

Zsa Zsa (Kiani vs Red D remix)
Review: The original of this first saw the light back in autumn 2013, and it remains a dynamically built nu-disco track boasting early Aeroplane style piano licks and an arresting vocal from Kristina Train. It's Blamma Blamma at their most stately and stunning. Here we find it in remix form; Psychemagik provide a liquid, bulbous bass facelift, Cato re-emphasises the nude beauty with a few edit sparkles, Wolf + Lamb go deeper with a synth heavy late-night floor stomper while Kiani vs Red D close the show with a sunset-minded slice of modern euphoria. Each twist adding a whole new chapter to the Blamma Blamma story, the only problem is working out which rub to add in your next set.

Jamie Blanco - "Everything Once"
Kruton - "Square Cloud"
Fx Mchn - "Unkool"
Facade - "Times Ten"
Review: Within the space of two years and five releases, London Housing Trust has cemented its' reputation as one of Britain's most reliable deep house imprints. This sixth release is every bit as essential as it's predecessors, and finds Milo Smee returning to contribute under his lesser spotted Kruton alias. More commonly seen delivering thunderous acid techno as Bintus, Smee arguably provides one of the highlights of this 12" in the chugging, krautrock-influenced blast of modern day bleep-house by the name of "Square Cloud". Elsewhere, Jamie Blanco lays down some picturesque, soft-focus 808 electro, FX Machn gets all wonky and hypnotic and Facade takes us deep into dreamy, late night house territory on the pleasingly melodious "Times Ten".

Boddika & Joy Orbison - "Mercy" (Boddika VIP)
Kassem Mosse - "Broken Patterns"
Review: ** Repress ** The first of two 12" samplers heralding the forthcoming Nonplus label compilation Think and Change arrives bearing two heavy hitting tracks not to be found on the compilation proper. On the A-side, Boddika & Joy Orbison's Sunklo hit "Mercy" gets the VIP treatment from Boddika; the result is a peak time tool which strips the original down to its barest components but still maintains the juggernaut-like quality of the original. It's joined by a fresh Kassem Mosse track in the form of "Broken Patterns", a typically tough production from the Bosse which combines and endlessly stomping 4/4 rhythm with cascading string plucks and rattling synth textures.

Review: For the sophomore release on Ukraine's Kultura Zvuka, we have a right bunch of heavy hitters representing the global minimal tech house scene on the A side, with Traffic head honchos Bodin & Jacob bringing the sound of Frankfurt on "Sloushnash" while Brit Alec Falconer teams up with Kizoku for some bleepy retro electro bass on "Ricard Refreshmen". On the flip, it's an entirely local affair going back to Ukraine with Bejenec harking back to the golden rave days on "I Don't Do Festivals But" and Sasha Zlykh's trippy afterhours techno jam "Thugged Out Pissed Off" being a sure shot to bang the party.
