Works On Sunday EP
Cat: FUSE 018 . Rel: 08 Jul 15
Mind Blank (8:43)
Works On Sunday (vinyl only) (7:47)
Works On Sunday (Enzo Siragusa & Seb Zito remix) (6:44)
Review: Moscow Records boss Archie Hamilton appears this time on Enzo Siragusa's Fuse London imprint with these slices of rolling, Latin-infused tech-house for the beach party. This is the kind of stuff that lovers of Mindshake and Rawthentic will be all over. First up "Mind Blank" brings the tough yet sultry attitude that you could imagine playing peak time at Amnesia. "Works On Sunday" takes the tempo down a notch or two for something more suited to the afterhours, but just as sexy. There's also a remix of this on the flip by none other than label boss Siragusa with Seb Zito keeping the afterhours vibe intact but with a druggier, minimal take on things.

Jay Tripwire - "Mung Bean Medley" (8:06)
Hidden Sequence - "Synchro" (7:23)
Fletcher - "Makka" (6:16)
Review: Steve O'Sullivan invites a trio of artists to lay down some serious head nodding beats for 'Rhythm Method Vol.4'. Calling on one of Canada's trusted talents and solid purveyors of deep grooves Jay Tripwire leads the charge with 'Mung Bean Medley'. There's simply no messing: pushing through a taught rhythmic workout, incessant toms and metallic tones etch deep into the mood - awash with dubbed out atmospherics and crafty touches that more than a give a nod to the dark house dubs of yesteryear. On the flip, 'Hidden Sequence' inject their creative flex, demonstrating the all important art of minimalist bounce with 'Synchro'. The kind of fully swung beats and tripped out twinges that brighten the groove more often than not when 7am comes calling. The svelte bustle and soothing tones of 'Makka' from Fletcher by contrast, soothe the mind and leaves plenty of room to kick back as weary limbs take their toll: a fine tonic indeed.

Susta (Ron Trent dub) (7:29)
Review: The deep house maestro that is Ron Trent has been tapped up for some of his remix expertise by the good folk at Leng. He is charged with tackling Harks & Mudd's 'Susta' and turns out two versions. His opening remix is all grown up Balearic sounds. Gentle percussion is scattered over the leggy house drums, noodling Rhodes chords bring colour and a breathy female vocal layers in the sun kissed soul. It's an immediate classic. On the flip comes his dub, which is more fleshy and elastic, but with just as much soul and warmth.

Review: Rebirth serves up the first in a mini-series uncovering hidden gems from Italian house music's recent past, after the popular Ciao Italia Generazioni Underground compilation they recently presented. Bonus EP Uno features the deeply emotive 'Secret Doctrine' by The True Underground Sound Of Rome Ft Stefano Di Carlo with its Marc Kinchen style vibe, which was the A side highlight. Over on the flip, you've got Francesco Montefiori's Keytronics Project with the low slung mood music of 'A Little Piano In My House' followed by the mesmerising, kalimba-led island dream of 'Music All Night' by The Montego Bay Experience - aka Carlo Troya & Stefano Tirone.

Acidboychair - "The End (At Any Speed)" (4:48)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: Gravity Graffiti has been doing great things with its series of split 12"s already, but now the Italian label goes one better for its tenth release with this mighty double pack of heavy hitters. First up is the ever-untouchable Yoshinori Hayashi, who gets as straight up as he possibly could with the freaky house burner "Dissociative." Telephones is feeling particularly dubbed out and groovy on "Kalimbalimbo", while DB.Source and Riccardo Schiro take things strung out and textural on "Montevago". Dynamo Dreesen is in rave mode for the pepped up and delightfully weird "Reactivate", leaving the final side to Oyvind Morken & Kaman Leung's chugging "Tunnel Visjon" and the rubbery side swipes of Acidboychair's "The End (At Any Speed)".

Glancing At The Moon (5:35)
Lamentation (6:48)
Deep Inside (8:26)
Review: Alleviated's Larry Heard reissue series has previously brought us the rough and tough acid of Gherkin Jerks and, more recently, the intergalactic downtempo grooves of his largely overlooked Alien LP. Here, they revisit one of Heard's later aliases, Loosefingers, dusting down and reissuing tracks from 2003's Glancing at the Moon EP. All three tracks are deep, warm and melodious in typical Heard fashion, with the title track delivering a sultry blend of wide-eyed chords, darting electronics, Latin-influenced percussion and tactile keys. "Deep Inside" delivers a hazy, sun-kissed take on soulful house - all jazz bass, sensual chords and gentle vocals. Best of all, though, is the tougher, synth-heavy "Lamentation", which rolls along at a near techno-tempo and is blessed with thrilling bleep melodies.

Land (5:18)
Review: Rhythm Section International, helmed by "Executive Producer" Bradley Zero, has barely put a foot wrong since launching in 2014. Here, the Peckham imprint welcomes Tom Harris AKA Hidden Spheres into the fold. He hits the mark from the off, layering up twinkling pianos, mutant synthesizer lines, bluesy vocal samples and huggable deep house grooves on "Well Well". Another deep, sun-kissed, almost horizontal house excursion can be found on the B, with the intricate and tactile "Your Effect" impressing. Elsewhere, Harris explores the dusty, downtempo side of his repertoire, with the jazzy "Land" sounding like a long lost Ninja Tune jam from the mid '90s.

HP Vince - "Oh My Love" (4:04)
Fraser - "Chicago '93" (4:39)
Review: If you're on the look-out for suitably big, party-starting workouts that make liberal use of samples from classic cuts and slept-on disco gems, this five-track label sampler from Tasty Recordings is well worth checking. Vinny Terranova sets the tone with 'Let's Go People', a barnstorming funky house slammer that boasts samples aplenty from an Arrested Development classic, before Disko Junkie pitches up a Grover Washington Jr classic and turns it into a bumpin' disco-house number. Elsewhere, Discotron's 'De La Disco' is a nu-disco edit-not-edit of a 'daisy age' hip-hop classic, HP Vince's 'Oh My Love' is a disco-house take on Luther Vandross, and Fraser's 'Chicago 93' is a thickset disco-house slammer that uses the same disco samples as a famous funky house classic of the early 2000s.

Leo Gunn - "Aheeoo" (4:57)
Review: You can always trust in the quality of house music carried by Inner Shift. As a long standing label pursuing a sincere and emotive strain of 4/4, they've carried the work of a huge number of high grade artists since 2012, and the trend continues with their second Collective Continents VA release. Opening things up, Mark Hand unfurls more of his exquisite, Rhodes-licked vibes, while Platform 001 offers up a more subliminal, stripped and bumping groove. G-Prod takes things into the distance with the pad-soaked dreamstate of 'Horizon', and Leo Gunn digs into something dusty and lounge-geared with the outstanding warm-up cut 'Aheeoo'.

Hydergine - "Lunar Eclipse" (7:32)
Review: Lempuyang's third offering is an outstanding split release between Steve O'Sullivan & Hydergine, label bosses for Mosaic/Bluetrain & Ranges. In 'Binary Riddim' Steve delivers a two-part dub track spanning >13 minutes, seriously heavy in the low end; melancholy strings in the first half, progressing to outright menacing chord stabs in the latter. A versatile track offering something for both warm-up and the dancefloor. Complimenting on the flip are 'Mystic Light' and 'Lunar Eclipse' from Hydergine. Deep, dubby atmospherics meander over a weighty 909 kick on B1. Subtle minimalism a la Terrence Dixon, pitched down on B2. Essential release!

Review: Over the last three years, DJ/producer Mimmo "MoBlack" Falcone has turned MoBlack Records into arguably the World's leading label for African house music. Defected clearly thinks so, because the label has decided to put out this EP featuring tracks from remixes from Falcone and some of his regular collaborators. On side A Falcone joins forces with Armonica to deliver two sparkling, rubbery, positive and heavily electronic reworks of Fela Kuti classic 'International Thief Thief'. Both hit the spot, though it's the Dub, with its extended vocal breakdown and trippy effects, that floats our boat. Over on the flip we're treated to two versions of MoBlack, Emmanuel Jal and Henrick Schwarz hook-up 'Chagu': a bouncy Afro-tech take from Schwarz and a warmer, deep Afro-house interpretation by Falcone.

Review: For those who either weren't around or not alive in the late 1990s, Housey Doingz was an all-star collective of British producers - including scene stalwarts Terry Francis and Nathan Coles - who helped codified the then emerging tech-house sound via a string of EPs and a superb debut album, "Doing It". This EP from reissue specialists Mint Condition mines that album, offering up four of the most sought-after and timeless tracks. Check first the electro-flavoured late-night intoxication of "Curly Wurly" - all rugged acid lines, twinkling lead lines and stabbing bass - before admiring the more breakbeat-flavoured classical tech-house purity of "The Poets". Elsewhere, shuffling, tech-tinged beats nestle beneath dreamy deep house chords on "Ambidextrous Left", while "Flying Saucer" is a creepy, all-action affair bestowed with a genuine sense of forward momentum.

At the A2 London's Doppelate makes their Cong Burn debut with an elegant tech-house roller. Review: Following a string of alluring, melody-rich, digital-only EPs, Peace Symphonies makes its debut on wax with a multi-artist extravaganza. Gorge Hewek sets the tone with opener 'Peace Symphonies', a warming, sun-kissed slab of kaleidoscopic deep house/tech-house fusion that reminded us of some of the material released by the All Day I Dream label. Makebo's 'You' is a soft focus, dewy-eyed slab of sunrise-ready bliss underpinned by shuffling house drums, while 'Lazos' by Simon Vuarambon is a crunchy and groovy workout smothered in relaxed jazz piano solos and synth strings. Perhaps best of all though is the gorgeously grandiose, life-affirming dancefloor colour that is the Volen Sentir Pure Magic Healing version of 'Jinx' by Lost Desert and Hermanez.

Review: Kyle Hall makes another entry into the already fine discography of his Forget The Clock label with another fine four tracker. His usual raw style pervades from the off with the well swung drums and bumping kicks of the title track soon to get you in the groove. His signature diffuse synth work is what brings warmth and soul to the dusty drums of 'Track 2' while 'Sarabi' ups the pace with a more hurried groove and pent up sense of party joy. A second bonus track closes proceedings, with 'Track 4' layering up low slung drums and meandering cosmic leads to heady effect.

It's a heavy-hitting mix of pivotal house talents starting off with prolific Windy City player Boo Williams. The big man's 'Transformation' is a smooth and chord-laced house roller that has a more reflective vibe than his usual party-starting offerings. Review: Reptile Mob is a newly launched, vinyl-only sub-label of the well-regarded GLBDOM imprint. It kicks off with a five-track various artists release that pays homage to the garage sound. 'Don't Know It' by Highrise opens up with a distantly 90s vibe, then Sky Joose shows his class on 'On The Shores' with its hard-edged bassline and full-throttle drums. Johnny U-Tah works some re-pitched and time-stretched vocals to perfection on 'Voices In My Head', with further gems from The Thunderkats whose 'Melatron' is a piano-laced bumper and last of all Jay Ward's 'Everything That I Need' brims with vocal lushness. In 2020 it launched a label that is as just as essential and Henry Hyde is next up complete the one release a year schedule it has favoured so far. He offers four tracks of froward thinking tech house starting with the full throttle funk of 'Approaching The Peak' then much more dubby and stripped back 'My Machine Walks'. Review: Alleviated's trawl through the (admittedly limited) back catalogue of Larry Heard's long-forgotten Loosefingers alter ego continues. The three tracks here were originally released back in 2004 on the When Summer Comes EP, and see Heard at his deepest and most sensual. The ten-minute title track is particularly gorgeous, sounding like a blueprint for all those hazy "beach house" releases that followed in subsequent years. Pleasingly, there's some more aggressive, in-your-face material on the flip, with the rubbery "Transmission X" and bold "Acid Bounce" recalling Heard's more robust, acid house-inclined work (Gherkin Jerks, "Washing Machine" etc). In fact, it's these two cuts that make the EP nigh on essential.

French producer Hugo LX proves himself more than worthy of the job, however with this superb deep and spaced out four tracker. 'Freedom House Dance' is the opener, and rides on waves of cosmic synths and deft pads. 'Catching Thunder' is more business like thanks to the chattering claps and more direct and purposeful bassline. Review: For their latest trip into soul-soaked machine music, People Of Earth has turned to debutant Detroit producer Haz Mat, who has been plying his trade as a musician and DJ in the Motor City for at least the last 15 years. There's an assured feel to A-side "My Zania", a rock solid, occasionally driving deep house number smothered in fluttering chord progressions, techno style analogue bass, and rising, intergalactic motifs. You'll find more tech-tinged deep house soul on the flip, where the synthesizer-heavy "Bridge To The Universe" - a fitting title, all told - sounds particularly addictive. He draws an excellent debut to a close with "Groove of Life", where fluttering flute solos dance across a jazz-funk inspired, Andres style deep house number.

We didn't hear any more from him for a fair while, but then in 2018 he resurfaced with some quality tech house gear via the Musik Is Egall label out of Cologne. Now Hess is back for a third instalment with 'Don't Be Anybody Else', a mid-tempo chugger with an acidic bite just crying out for a dark n' dirty basement. On the flip, the tempo ramps up considerably as Orlando Voorn takes the reins for a remix bristling with Detroit techno intensity.

Review: London-based label 'M.A.D. That being said, four new contributions from four of the label's most trusted mainstays all nail that intersection of hip-house, '90s piano house and breakbeat to a T. All scratchy and lo-fi, it kicks off with Rakim Under's phoned-in 'Lady J', before seguing into the pianoraver '4th Street' by Pascal Moscheni, the much-deeper 'Loving You Like Crazy' by Lex Wolf, and the spatially unique 'Let's Get It Together' by Hard Drive Library.

Cat: TOOL 1150. Rel: 20 Jun 23
Mark Knight & Crusy - "Daddy Shhh" (6:06)
Huxley - "All I Need" (5:25)
Essel - "Lennon" (5:17)
Leftwing: Kody, James Hurr & I Jah - "Music Is The Medication" (4:58)
Review: The mighty and unmovable Toolroom offers up a snapshot of where it is at right now with a fifth volume of its Sampler series. The boss himself Mark Knight kicks off with a collaborative tune with Crusy: 'Daddy Shhh' is loopy, tribal, full flavour tech with jumbled drums and lots of buffed metal. Huxley's 'All I Need' is one of the UK producers warm house sounds, a smart vocal brings a sense of pain over simple but effective beats. Essel's 'Lennon' then brings peak time energy with strobe-lit synth sequences and churning drums, and Leftwing: Kody, James Hurr & I Jah shut down with 'Music Is The Medication', a muscular bumper with dub-wise vocals.

Qubiko - "Confused" (extended mix) (6:17)
Wh0 & Kideko - "Soul Searcher" (extended mix) (5:44)
Review: There's a certain brand of 4x4 deep house that utterly slapssss. And that's exactly the business Toolroom Records are in - they're simultaneous experts at throwing us back to the sprawling garage paradises, while still lending modern, buildup-drop flairs to their productions. This V/A 12" sampler from a wider comp shows off choice buts from label mainstays, Essel, Guz, Qubiko, et al., showing off the best of what Italy's poppy deep house scene has to offer.

Review: Vega Records finally drops this EP from Honeysweet having teased tunes from it on the Vega Records 5 Pack Unreleased III. It's a superb house offering with lashings of soulful groovers, all produced by Josh Milan. First out of the blocks is 'Last Night Changed It All' featuring Lawrence Clark on sax. It's a jam that will pack out the floor but brims with real musicality from the magical Rhodes, picked bass guitar, rhythm guitar and drums. 'Crazy' is a more raw, textured percussive sound but then come plenty more feel-good grooves for sun-kissed dance floors such as 'Being Free.'

His "Jungle Dub EP" on Poker Flat reveals the more techy and reduced side of his musical creativity, with groovy and hypnotic bass-loops.

Review: Steve Silk Hurley is one of the original voices of house music dating back to there first wave that came out of Chicago. The multi-time Grammy winner here joins up with Leeds DJ and vocalist Sara Garvey who has a rich discography that includes singing on some of Nightmares on Wax's best material. Their collab kicks off the all-new Hard Times label and is a pure and unadulterated bit of timeless house music with steamy vocals, neat piano work and nice raw drums. It comes here as a peak time cut, deeper version, silky smooth garage-tinged vibe from Eddie Leader and darker offering from Terry Farley & Kevin Swain Angel. An essential package for sure.

Review: Hidden Sequence have appeared on legendary dub techno label Mosaic in fine form of late and now they land on the Lempuyang imprint with four more serene fusions. Their Theories of Time EP opens up with the swaggering dub rhythms and bottomless depths of 'Distortion', a cut as heady as they come. 'Travelling,' as the title suggests, has a deeper rolling groove and more movement to it as it snakes through underwater dub caverns. Flip it over for more widescreen and serene explorations of the ocean floor with 'Shift' and mysterious leads of 'Delay' which is a fourth and final frictionless dub dream.

Introducing Le Femme Fantastique (0:50)
Le Femme Fantastique (extended mix) (5:37)
Le Femme Fantastique (KiNK & KEi extended remix) (7:09)
Review: Honey Dijon and Josh Caffee is a powerful coming together of black talent on the long essential Classic label. After a spoken word introducing from Caffee - a lauded DJ and live act who regularly blows up the likes of Block9 at Glastonbury - comes "Le Femme Fantastique" (extended mix). It's a twisted bit of raw, brain frying house with prickly drums, spiky synths and a great vocal delivered over the top. KiNK & KEi serve up an extended remix that is drawn out and somewhat stripped back, so it bangs in different but equally high impact ways. This EP is pure club dynamite, make no mistake.

On The Road (Generation Next remix) (4:47)
Review: A new label out of Mexico, Short Attention Records launches its second release with a five track offering of proper melodic house & techno from Hector Ram with the word 'quality' stamped large upon them. 'Midnight Sounds' starts things off with the grand rhythmically-building 'Midnight Sounds', almost New Order-esque at times. 'For Our Small Parties' follows, old skool again in flavour, blending subtly employed breaks and a sturdy house framework, then 'Dear Dancefloor', probably the gentlest and most fragile effort here, opens side two. 'On The Road' boasts a more electro feel and Orbital-esque synths, and is deemed worthy of a second airing via a nicely throbbing remix from Detroit's Generation Next closing proceedings.

You Better Dance (7:26)
Together (7:34)
Review: Manchester's Hidden Spheres becomes the latest artist to showcase his cosmic, percussion-heavy reworks and re-edits on Talking Drums' offshoot Drum Chums. As you'd expect, the sometime Lobster Theremin, Moods & Grooves and Rhythm Section International producer is in fine form from the off, delivering ear-catching, mildly Balearic reworks of genuine obscurities. The highlight for us is 'Stolen', a version of an early South African kwaito number that's big on proto-house bass, densely layered percussion, lo-fi synth melodies and fine lead vocals. Over on the reverse, 'You Better Dance' is a deliciously dreamy, reggae-influenced, mid-tempo Afro-Balearic treat, while 'Together' sounds like a re-wire of an eccentric bit of mid-to-late '80s bubblegum brilliance.

Agustin Barbei - "Altare" (5:20)
Henry Hyde - "Covered In Purple" (7:25)
Wink - "Cod, Chips N Curry Sauce" (5:46)
Review: The next release from Mindhelmet features another stellar cast of operators in the more playful end of the minimal tech house sphere. Kolter leads the charge with the full-fat, punchy 90s stylings of 'New Generation' before Agustin Barbei brings some sassy energy to the table on the shoulder-shaking 'Altare'. Henry Hyde shifts the focus to broken beat rhythms without losing the upfront melodies on his cut 'Covered In Purple', and Wink drops some cheeky organ chords and boxy drums aplenty on 'Cod, Chips N Curry Sauce'. If you like your 4/4 up for it and more than a little bit naughty, this record is a must-check.

Coming To You (House N' HD Terry Hunter & Mike Dunn Soulfrica mix) (6:19)
Review: On vinyl here for the first time are four tracks by acclaimed soul songstress Jill Scott, remixed by house music veteran Terry Hunter. Originally released on his 4 T's Box Productions back in 2016, they were only available on digital for some time. Story has it that Scott's manager wanted to get proper remixes done from her 2015 opus "Woman" and they agreed that Hunter would be the best person to do it. Beginning with the super sexy funky house rework of "Can't Wait" before going deep and spiritual on the Afro-house vibe remix of "Lighthouse", the smooth late night romance on the "Chicago Remix" of "Prepared" and closing with fellow Chicagoan legend Mike Dunn under their House N' HD alias. Hunter is quoted as saying "it was a great remix package. It's an official one and I'm proud of that" - and rightfully so!

Review: As evidenced by the cover of this latest EP, Belgian house artist Hermanez has his head in the clouds. Similarly, if we were to liken the weight of his productions to a cloud, it would probably be a dense cumulonimbus, ready to pour it all down on us. That's because every track on this bit has extra-special, nuanced attention paid to its drums, all of which are backed up by immense, emotive bassweight to boot.

Review: Some of tech house's biggest names feature on this new Defected 12" alongside a trio of more contemporary talents. Butch & Nic Fanciulli are very much in the first category and they offer the happy hosue and big samples of 'I Want You' before new schooler Hannah Wants rolls out a chunky house groove with blissed out Ibiza vocal energy on 'The One' (feat Ara). Archie Hamilton pairs old school Chicago energy with a fresh vocal on the anthemic 'Let The Light In' (feat HQA) then Dutchman Ferreck Dawn shuts down with the crossover dance sounds of 'Better' (feat Jena).

Resilience (Terrence Parker remix) (7:08)
Fallen Angel (Tiger Stripes remix) (6:32)
Review: Over the last decade, the London dwelling Italian DJ Riva Starr has been through many musical phases: and his latest incarnation- as Hyperloop is for Adam Beyer's esteemed Drumcode imprint. As you'd have probably guessed by now, The Snatch! Records boss throws down some harder edged sounds, more suited to the main room of superclubs at peak time, rather than the sunny White Isle beach parties he's usually more affiliated with. "Resilience" bridges the gap between Detroit techno and disco house in the same vein as Robert Hood's Floorplan project. With its pounding funked up rhythms, backed by hypnotic symphonic loops that make up one surefire DJ tool if we've ever heard one. Second offering "Fallen Angel" likewise features a no-nonsense, heads-down type of groove - but employing a dreamy bell melody for a nice contrast. It features two remixes: one by veteran Scandinavian producer Tiger Stripes and the other and by the one and only Terrence Parker. This dirty and jackin' rendition by the Motor City don was probably our favourite.

Review: Mysticisms continues its global search for amazing music, hitting gold again with an EP of four previously unreleased house meets IDM with a dreamy edges by Romania's HAN aka Dan Handrabur, culled from early studio recordings between 1991-95. After getting into record store culture he began building a studio and eventually gave up studying in favour of production, relocated to Vancouver, Canada, where his debut release (as X Drone with Adham Shaikh in 1993) began to establish Handrabur's role as an integral part its electronic scene. Appearances with Harthouse, Exist Dance, Eye Q Records and many more followed, plus collaborations with the legendary Phil Western. The four tracks here haven't aged at all, with nimble beats, action-packed arrangements and dreamy atmospheres, 'Give In & Resist' coming on like Rising High-era Mixmaster Morris crossed with the playfulness of Air Liquide, and 'Phantasme' revelling in the same cross-rhythmic fun that informed The Black Dog's classics.
