Review: There is a colour TV program which airs nightly which is called: "The Most Beautiful Train Routes Of Germany"! During the show a locomotive travels over the tracks and the person on-screen is via the camera perspective at long last the conductor. It's a wonderful idea, where you seem to be somewhere between monotony and fascination. With this scenario in mind, you will be taken into the night and this is the soundtrack. The conductor must stay awake, and this music is the caffeine to get it done. The thoughts are freely suspended without the concentration having to suffer! The pillars of this music are melancholy: power and volition (will) which is thus paired with tenderness and passion. This is in connection with an irresistible swing of effortless movement out in the open revealing confidence in the darkness. Confused thoughts are with only a few ingredients steered to a specific determination of the sound cosmos helped by freely breathing. The concept all formed by a certain Douglas Greed who has a solid reference with two releases on the Combination Records. This one is actually well-known as a drum & bass activist in Thuringia. However, as it always is with the music "Schizo-Aficionado", the type must be stamped with a synonym for the crowds to put a face to, in this case powerful yet at the same time tender odes. It's for nothing for musical needs to be dimmed with psycho-pharmaceuticals, only because the ol'doc doesn't understand the split personality is an essential element. Mr Greed accompanied in the future by his familiar 'Live-Laptop-Action' handle spreads his musical seeds of dance fertilization over the speakers. When there 3 tracks don't comprise a proper bid there is only one alternative: migrate to an island and just play the bongos and didgeridoo! "Curie" from the darkness awakes the driving power of the gloom which within, brings light to the depths. Therein lies the guttural hovering of a bat of steel covered in soft golden feathers sauntering about. The further you descend, hope that all mourning has been defeated and the belief of positive in all is rekindled. "Fresh and Clean" the immaculate conception inside of an enormous machinery building! The devices are all dumfounded, only life matters - everyone experiences the resurrections of happiness. Through the milky glass streams the driving power of love. The intense ecstasy can be danced to! "Let's Roll" picture the docks at sunset. Everything moves along slowly, the will of the sea has been conquered on arrival just the effort needed. Everything is rhythm and melody, every finish and activity even the raising up the anchor and the drone of the propeller creates a sound of vastness. The dance on the water can now begin!

Review: New from Sound Signature is "I Only Have Eyes For You", from the multi talented percussionist Jerrald James (aka Jerry The Cat). Jerry aptly demonstrates his own production prowess in covering the Flamingos' "I only Have Eyes For You". He smartly chose Genevieve Marantette to provide vocals on this piece, and she gives her best recorded performance to date.

  1. The Rotating Assembly - "Seasons Of My Life" (feat Billy Lo)
  2. Green Pickles - "Feedback" (feat Billy Lo & M Pittman)
Review: Sound Signature kick off the new year with a pleasing reissue of some smoky soul from Theo Parrish's outlet for his most jazzy tendencies. On "Seasons Of My Life" Billy Lo croons over a muted trumpet while a surprisingly rough stomp gets hammered out of a live kit. It's a dreamy, sunkissed jam with all the loose, free-flowing elements you would expect from something with Parrish's stamp on it. Marcellus Pittman helps out on "Feedback", as a sparser, meandering groove does the nasty with some restrained keys. For that Detroit beatdown flavour away from the dancefloor, this is as good as it gets.

  2. Origin
  3. Bloodline
Review: FXHE bloodline member Big Strick continues to excel on his own 7 Days Ent. label, dropping his first 12" of 2012 which has a nice community feel to proceedings. Alpha & Omega introduces us to Generation Next, a rising 16 year old talent from the streets of Detroit who contributes alongside Mr Strickland to all three tracks here. Stylistically, the three tracks here seem equally indebted to Juan Atkins pure techno endeavours as Infiniti and the sub aqueous grooves of Drexciya, not least the restrained title track which shimmers from the murky depths into a finely crafted liquid groove imbued with bubbling elatory Utopian textures. On the flip "Origin" ripples with pressure, its rhythmic elements grappling for your attention as the space between them decreases with Strick and Gen Next expertly layering texture upon texture. A masterful 12" shaped exercise in modern day Detroit sounds is completed with the devious electrofied snap of "Bloodline".

  4. Big Strick - "Armed & Dangerous"
Review: Leonard "Big Strick" Strickland is perhaps best known for his family ties with Omar-S (they're cousins), though his productions are well worthy of praise in their own right. Here, he offers up a sampler 12" featuring cuts from his recent (and excellent) Reservoir Dogs LP. Perhaps the most noteworthy cut is "Family Affair", a lovingly constructed chunk of hypnotic, melodic deepness written with Omar-S. That said, Strick's solo effort "Armed & Dangerous" - a winding chunk of voodoo techno - is arguably better. The mazy techno-funk of Reckless Ron Cook's "Night Moves" is also outstanding.

  4. October Oasis
Review: FXHE fam Big Strick's 7 Days Entertainment introduced us to the 16 year old talents of Generation Next last year, and here he returns with his first full EP in Lamborghini Dreams. The title track comes across like OB Ignitt's recent classic "Oh Jabba" with smooth Rhodes chords and almost cosmic melody drifting across staccato drum machine beats, but the rest show a producer clearly inspired by the simple structures of Omar S' productions. "110" is a devastating piece of trippy, fluttering techno, "Hood Anthem" pairs bright staccato synth textures with curt percussion and "October Oasis" utilises bubbling analogue tones and shrill arpeggio drifts to great effect. The name Generation Next may come with a lot of expectation for someone so young, but on the strength of this release he's already poised to give his established peers a run for their money.

Review: Chiwax inaugurate a series of ten planned releases from Mr Spencer Kincy aka Gemini with this timely reissue of one of the producer's most sought after releases. Quite where Kincy has been for the past 12 years or so isn't exactly clear but the potential prospect of some new Gemini material should be salivating for any self proclaimed fan of Chicago house. Traxx Vol 1 features all the tracks from Untitled, the EP Kincy released as Gemini on Cajual back in 1995 though not in the same order as that original pressing. Regardless, the chance to own the brilliant percussion workout that is "Joker" or the mind bending "Psychosis" should not be passed up.

Review: ** Camera's ready. Prepare for the Repress ** Curtis Jones is never one to rest on his laurels, as his staggering back catalogues as Green Velvet and Cajmere can attest but such is the force of his personality that a new release still feels like an event. "Bigger Than Prince" capitalises on Jones' knack for a vocal that lambasts the less earnest quirks of the dance music industry, while creating the hook to make the track a bomb in the same instance. Production-wise, there's a measured strut to the track with some choice growling bass synths and an underlying disco flavour that suits Jones just fine. On the remix front, Circus turn to The Martinez Brothers to hammer out a rolling, percussion focused version perfect for big room mixing, while Hot Since 82 turn out a similar line in boompty peak time damage.

Review: Like Father, Like Son sees Big Strick and his prodigious son Generation Next team up for a split 12" showcasing this pair of criminally underappreciated Detroit producers. "Rain Dance" sees the elder of the two deliver a deep techno journey filled with abstracted textures and organic chimes that sound, while the young Generation Next shows a remarkable maturity beyond his years on "And You Too", where sparse, subtle chords and the simplest of melodies drift by on a light rhythm. On "Like Father, Like Son" the two pair up for the most gently uplifting of deep piano jams. Just like pretty much everything on 7 Days Entertainment, this is some nigh on essential material.

Review: You have to admire Laurent Garnier's continued desire to push boundaries and confound critics. His plan to devote 2014 to releasing five EPs on five different labels, whilst mixing up the styles, is undoubtedly bold. This three-tracker for the ever-intriguing 50Weapons imprint is particularly impressive. "MILF" bristles with stuttering analogue rhythms, foreboding chords and attractive bleep melodies, coming on like an unlikely jam session between Sweet Exorcist and Orbital. "DSK" sees the French veteran moving further towards his techno roots, while "He" sounds like an homage to darkwave with techno overtones and more than a hint of stripped-back early Chicago acid. Bravo Monsieur Garnier, bravo!

Review: Genius Of Time and Running Back seems like such a perfect fit you wonder why the Swedish duo haven't graced Gerd Janson's label before now. It might be because Alexander Berg and Nils Krough aren't exactly the most prolific of duos when it comes to original material with only three EPs to their name since they inaugurated the Aniara project in such sublime fashion back in 2010. Fans of Genius of Time and John Talabot's DJ Kicks mix have added reason to engage in some vociferous rejoicing as the former's sublime offbeat number "Juno Jam" contribution to the latter release is centre stage on this 12". In addition to the A Side bliss of that Berg and Krough slip in two more percussive numbers on the flip which Running Back quite rightly point out would make "Joe Claussell proud".

Review: Generation Next aka Tre Strickland - son of Omar-S associate Big Strick - has impressed since first joining forces with his dad on 2011's Like Father, Like Son LP. Here he proves his continued development as a producer with an excellent collection of warm, deep, soul-flecked house cuts for Strickland family imprint 7 Days Entertainment. As you'd expect, highlights are plentiful, from the skittering machine drums, dreamy chords and occasional organs of "Vanilla Sky", to the tech-tinged simplicity of the melodious-but-tough "Chilli Cheese Fries". Best of all, though, is the blazed beatdown feel of "The Tomorrow People", a hazy saunter through rich chords, shuffling percussion and snaking electronics.

Review: Marcel Vogel and Intimate Friends seems to be an equation that always results in vinyl bliss - see last year's inaugural seven inch from the label which had input from Vogel along with Jordan Czamanski, Ruf Dug and other talented friends. Expanding matters to the 12" format for this third release only means there is more room to fill with sonic excellence and Vogel is clearly up to the task. It's a diverse affair with four takes on "Doin' It", with the predominant mood on the A Side soul heavy and dubby on both the original and refix from African Shakedown's Noema. The 12" is fairly ruled by the flipside refix from NY AK however, with the UK producer recasting the original as dusty Detroit influenced house!

Review: For their latest vinyl release, the TINK! Music label looks to Lisbon and the enigmatic duo Gatupreto, whose Modo Di Trabadja 12" betrays all manner of influences that seep beyond the realm of house music. In their own words, "the art Gatupreto generates is simple, unpretentious and sincere, it owes to the classic rave vibe as much as to the rawness of hip hop as much to the sunset of Cape Verde as to the sunrise of the Lisbon riverside." This manifests itself in two understandably diverse productions from Gatupreto with the heavily percussive workout of Vahagn's closing remix of "Grandi Loba" of particular note.

Review: Diego Gamez is a US-based house producer who has previously appeared on big man Jus-Ed's Underground Quality stable. That, in our opinion, deserves an applause in itself and instantly turned our attention to his new EP for his very own Deependance label. The mood is similar to his last outing but there's something more molecular about these tracks and it feels like Gamez has added a slightly darker edge to his sound design. "No Depen-dance", for example, is a deep and dubby house tune with an interstellar sensibility, and the same goes for "Travelling Through Phases", a beautifully spacey jam with plenty of funk twists. Over on the flip, "New Horizon" is bumpier but nonetheless cinematic, and "Psych" squelches and morphs its way across desolate and starry landscapes. Deeper than deep space.

The Strickmaster's latest release comes from none other than his own offspring, the supremely talented Generation Next, whose Ender 12" will definitely appeal to anyone that checked last year's Like Father, Like Son. Lead cut "Ender" is uplifting and soulful with its tough beat, mesmerising pianos and that bassline! "Dream States" is all dreamy keys and cowbells; what more you want? (its equally as funky!). Closing out proceeding is "Joni" taking things deeper but that 808 beat is absolutely tight!

Review: Tom 'Dam Mantle' Marshallsay and Rich McMaster from Golden Teacher were first granted an outlet as General Ludd through Eamon Harkin and Justin Carter's Mister Saturday Night last year with the breathless pair of house burners that made up the Woo Ha 12". Since then the General has brought the Luddite house sound to Clan Destine, 10 Thousand Yen and Autonomous Africa among others and now lands back on the Mister for the keenly anticipated Are You Losing My Hearing? Another two-track exercise in 12" dynamism, the title cut finds GL in sprightly house mood with a rubbery feel not too dissimilar to Gerd's Geeeman output. Flip it over and "Moneychangers" veers off into more dystopian, heads down territory with some killer modular squiggles throughout.

Review: This year, Theo Parrish seems to be doing his best to breathe new life into the careers of broken beat-era producers and musicians. Having previously released an excellent EP from Dego and Kaidi Tatham on Sound Signature, his latest missive comes from one-time conscious hip-hop producer Ge ology and one-time go-to jazz keys-man Mark De Clive-Lowe. The latter's brilliant synthesizer and piano work is arguably the highlight of both tracks here. On the spacey, P-funk influenced space-house swing of "Moon Circuitry" he does his best impression of Herbie Hancock, while "Escape On The Lodge Freeway" boasts intricate jazz solos atop a slightly tougher, chunkier deep house groove. Both tracks are, of course, impeccable.

Review: Apparently, Rene Pawlowitz doesn't already have enough production aliases. Having already released killer material as Shed, Head High, Craft, WK7, The Traveller and War Easy Made (to name a few), he's now adopted another moniker: Zigg Gonzalezz. "High Jackin" sees him expertly doffing a cap to Nuyorican Soul-era Masters At Work and similarly loose-limbed US house from the turn of the millennium, layering sparkling deep house chords and sweaty vocal samples over a bustling, Africanism-style rhythm. "The Kind" explores similarly territory, though it feels a little deeper despite the presence of denser, tribal-influenced rhythms. As for "The Kind (Storm Dub"), it feels like a long lost DJ Duke jam from the tail end of the '90s.

  4. Daniel Leseman - "On My Mind" (6:15)
Review: Hans Peeman (Junktion) and Daniel Leseman's Outplay is strictly committed to spreading the gospel of deep house music and this sermon comes courtesy of the aforementioned, with a bit of help from Laurence Guy. He appears first with the title track, which samples a pretty breathtaking strings section mixed with a spangling Derrick May style synth melody which fades out and gives way to a pretty wicked arpeggio... and some cowbells; sold already? Next up is Junktion with "Breakfast At Midnight" an offering of deep and dusty late night disco that certainly takes its cues from KDJ, but that's totally fine by us. The Brame & Hamo remix is more dancefloor friendly, slo-mo deep house that fans of Genius of Time or MCDE will appreciate. Finally Leseman's "On My Mind" offers us another deep and dusty house gem that revels in its beautifully sombre Motor City vibes. Not bad for a guy from Utrecht!
