Review: After an absence of a few years, 40 Thieves return to Leng Records with one of their most special releases to date: a hook-up with long-time Patrick Adams collaborator Gary Davis and long serving soulstress Cinammon Jones. What's on offer is a re-make of one of Jones' songs, 'The Gift', whose sweet lyrics celebrate the arrival of a new day. 40 Thieves take, explored first in the A-side 'Disco Mix', sounds like it was designed to be danced to during a San Francisco sunrise - think dub disco delays, hypnotic grooves, bubbly electronics, languid guitar licks and gentle melodies. Over on the flip, they take the track further into 'woozy 6am open air dancing territory' on a superb, stretched out 'Disco Dub' mix, before peppering a killer drum track with spaced-out electronics on the 'Beats' version.

Their cosmic house excursion starts with the playful robot funk of 'The Talkbox Track' and then takes in the silky space tech of 'M Is For Muff' which is effortlessly cool. Jhobei & Oliver R then step up with 'What's On Then' which is another mix of warped bass and neon synth lines over popping tech funk and then Love & Charleze conspire to send you home on a nice warm hearted disco tech vibe with their 'IC3D' featuring some super synth expressions.

Review: Is there a more fun and hard-to-pin-down label than Studio Barnhus? The plaything of Swedish artists Kornel Kovacs, Axel Boman and their mate Petter Nordkvist it has done it all from trancehall to bubblegum house via pop edits and plenty in between. Now they look to Stockholm boys Ari Bald & CJ Scott once more for a new EP that bangs hard and has a great sense of character, much like their label debut here last year. All four of these house cuts are full-flavoured slammers with heartfelt vocal samples and lovely naive melodies that really make their mark.

Review: Groovin Italy landed a monumental reissue for the label with C'hantal's 'The Realm'. Originally released way back in 1990 on the dance and early Brooklyn based Powertraxx records. Staying true to the original release, it offers the 'Love In D Minor' mix but does one better in tucking in the Acapella version to the A-side so the B-side 2 versions have a little more room to breathe. The added bonus has to be putting on the more rare "Wild Club mix' to the party along with the original 'Rave Mix'. All and all, a very packed reissue of some of the best versions of the track, all on one record. This might just hold the number one spot for best techno reissue so far of 2024.

Review: We all know that it is imperative to stay away from the minibar in most cases, but not here: the French label of that name is a classy outlet for those who like stylish minimal sounds. And who better to serve them up than the rightly revered Cabanne. This two-tracker kicks off with 'Karan' which is a delightfully smooth and heady late-night minimal joint with sci-fi designs and deft synth modulations. Review: Fledging but already fine young label U.Dig out of Croatia is back with more final gold, this time from a master of the form in Alexis Cabrera. He kicks off with the mini-epic that is '1997.5', a real head-melting and elastic acid tune that is perfectly deep and rolling for the freaky afters. 'Straight Up' is more punchy and taught, with low-slung drums and crisp hits powering it forward. Last of all things get brilliantly unhinged on 'Microrama,' a kinetic and densely packed cut with flappy snares blaring synths, withering melodies and a true sci-fi feel.

Review: Berlin-based Argentinian Alexis Cabrera has been knocking out classy minimal and tech house OPEs for a while on top labels like Atypic and Supervise Music. He here arrives on the fledgling Into The Woods label with more of his well crafted late nigh trips. 'Insatiable' is a sublime mix of rubbery bass rumbles and smooth synths that loop in concentric circles and take you ever higher into heaven as they do so. 'Liturgia' is a more experimental mix of loops and synth modulations that bring subtle funk to the popping drums. It's playful and fun and 'Serial Light' shuts down with some jazzy snare work, rolling keys and beams of sunlight through the shutters at 5 am.

Review: Savor Music is fast approaching its quarter century but just ahead of that milestone comes another timeless EP from Alexis Cabrera. Everything from Chicago jack to Detroit soul is referenced in these well-crafted and club-ready cuts, starting with the cosmic cruise that is 'Funkhouser'. 'The Next Tomorrow' throws it back to the 80s in its bright synth chords and 'Guitars On The 5th Cloud' sinks into a nice deep and heady mood with its melancholic bassline and skittish synth-guitar sequences panning about the mix over a soft acid gurgle. 'Don't Give Yourself Away' brings a touch of silky electro rhythm though a menacing bassline keeps things firmly rooted on the floor.

Review: Jorge Caiado takes charge of the tenth EP from Carpet & Snares with his tropically stylish mix of acid, techno and house. 'Wild Card' is first up with warped 303 lines undulating above an elastic bassline and amidst clattering perc. 'Life's Too Short' ups the pace a little with fresh house sound that has buffed metal chords and smeared pads over leggy beats. Things then take a turn to afterparty territory with 'Freak Not Freak' which is more late night and weird, and 'Wrong Mindset' then flips the vibe once more with its smeared dub chords and reverb-rich deep house drums.

After the first run of copies, the demand continued to slowly build as many couldn't resist wanting a copy of this excellent EP. All four pieces offer something special for that late night house music lover. Fans of labels like Nu Groove, Strictly Rhythm and the like will surely gravitate to gems like the beautiful 'La Riviera' and the Wild Pitch sound of 'Frome'. The B-sides are not just fillers either. We really like the groove on 'Gum' especially. This version comes on red vinyl to differentiate itself from the first edition.

Review: Sao Paulo artist and About Disco label head Rafael Cancian once played Motor City Wine party in its native Detroit and was thought to hail from the city itself so synonymous was his sound with what the locals expected. As such he now steps up to Hot Pot with a new pair of edits starting with 'Heaven.' It's a fulsome cosmic disco stepper with low sling drums and plenty of shiny synths as well as soothing vocal coos that help take you to ecstasy. Flip it over and you will find 'Nigeriac' which is a syncopated mix of Afro funk and rock to shake your bones loose.

Review: Native Soul Recordings has been around a long old time in dance music terms and now it looks back over some of its finest works with this first in a new series of Best Of comps. Music writer Harold Heath is first up with 'Slipstream,' an effortless smooth late-night house cut with introspective chords and silky pads bringing real depth. The Candy Dealers get more lithe and elastic with the spraying bass and jumbled percussive house of 'Train Of Thought' and last of all, Asad Rizvi remixes Jevne's 'Moderize' with a funky little bassline and chord vamps that keep you on edge. A tasteful package of timeless house grooves.

Review: Jurgen Paape has a brilliantly characterful sound and wrote one of our favourite silly records in 'Ofterschwang' some 13 years ago (go check it out, it's brilliant.) We're glad to hear some new music from the long time Kompakt legend and co-founder and once again it's not what you would expect. 'Allein' is a downbeat piece with oriental melodies and gently plucked strings over warm bass. It's not for the club, that is for sure, but the flip side version 'Allein In Italien' sure is. This one is a chugging and brit Italo disco number with retro 80s synth sounds and plenty of joyous grooves.

Carebears avariciously occupies two grooves on the A-side of Wild Circus' third instalment to the WILD series, paring back any overt emotion for pure lo-fi eeriness in the mode of fast, minimal tech briskness. The charge is continued on Sota's 'Malbon', sounding like it's worked the organic gutturations of a sleeping cyborg between the beats, while 'Shacklo's Groove' is curiousy laid-back and equally weird, with wahhing pulsations oozing around a similar mix.

Review: The unstoppable and always innovative Derek Carr returns with a new outing on Trident that is as potent as thew UK's weapon defensive system of the same name. It kicks off with the bumping beats and vamping chords of 'Ill Met By Moonlight"' then takes in 'Skeksis II' which is a more brain frying and acid laced techno cut. There is a super sweet garage feel and soulful house edge to the liquid grooves of 'Going Thru Life' then 'Nod' shuts down with some Detroit style hi-tek soul to round out Carr's most diverse and effective EP for a while.

Review: Chris Carrier is a long-time part of the underground. The Frenchman has released on a fine array of labels and served up plenty of ever-evolving sounds. For this one he digs into electro, tech, house and minimal starting with the praying loops and intergalactic turbulence of 'The Infinity Gate.' It's a noisy and intense one for the peak of the night while 'The Way To The Stars' is a more smooth grooving tune with nimble drums and bass. 'The Roaming' then rides on a bumping drum and bass comb that is run through with sleek and searching synth rays and last of all 'Spacevax' offers a clean and crisp electro-tinged beat on which to vibe while the sci-fi chords rain down from above with real elegance.

Review: Data Sync is a sub-label of Non Stop Rhythm and now label head Tom Carruthers is back on it with more of his fierce techno explorations. 'Intel' opens proceedings with some taught synth twangs and stomping drum work that will bring physicality to the floor. 'Force Field' is a similarly stomping sound with bright bells looping up top and 'Syntax' is a raw percussive frother with acid run right through it. 'GS5' (re-edit) is another one with some fresh synth sounds bringing light to the physical low ends and 'Metropolis' gets snappy and jacked up while 'Recon' closes down with some tribal energy and bleeping 90s references.

Initially making waves with his debut album Vindicated Soul in 2017, Carter has become a force in the UK soul scene with subsequent albums such as One Love, Absolutely, and Next Life. Review: It was the Sprungkartellwachs label that first put this out and soon after it became something of a cult classic that has since become much sought after. Mat Carter's own Varial label now has the rights to a proper re-release that will once again have dance floras twisted inside out and back to front. There is a freaky future menace to the paranoid synth and bumping drums of 'Raspmutal' before 'Down Turn' spins out into the cosmos on icy electro rhythms. Slowing things down for some stoned inward reflection is the gorgeous downtempo cut 'Fullow Street' before 80s synths bring retro charm to the cinematic electro of 'Process.'

Review: Monsieur Dimitri from Paris works his magic on Casbah 73's organic disco grooves with a remix treatment that surpasses all expectations. Casbah's original track may sound like a band-recorded take with added production sheen, but it's actually a deceptively well-made track recorded by a talented solo artist. Dimitri brings added wompy disco-house heat to the track in two parts, with the first part focusing on the more bangerific elements of the original, and the B (part two) stripping things back to focus on the more minimal, solo dubby parts.

Review: Joseph Caserta is a LA based artist who has graced the likes of Shadeleaf and Razor-N-Tape with his funked up wares in the past. After kicking off the God Hour label with a crafty 7" last year, he's back on the label with four prime cuts of deep house that demonstrates his skill in no uncertain terms. 'Day N Nite' is a smoky, good time party rocker with a tapestry of sound which captures some serious P-Funk freakiness, while 'Let U Go' leans in on a meaty bassline to carry the slow-sweeping filter house flavours up top. 'Red' is a sprightly, soulful joint with plenty of organic warmth and 'Flowers' slips down into a low-down dirty disco roll for when you want the warm-up to get a little hotter without disturbing the pitch fader.

Review: Cassy continues to remind us all of her credentials with another fine outing on her own Kwench label. It's a solo work that follows a series of collaborations but frankly tops all those with its sheer dancefloor intensity. 'Where Are We Now' is a full-throttle house cut with steamy 90s drive, vocal shards and unrelenting drum grooves that will bring frenzy to any floor. 'Alder' is more playful - it has a carnival vibe thanks to its colourful synths and caring percussion while yearning vocals ring out in the midst of it all. Review: Casual Connection is a master of mash up and is back to stake his claim on that title once more here on the effectively titled Edits label. This red hot double shot kicks off with 'Message Like It's Hot', which as you can probably guess form the title alone mixes up a Snoop Dogg classic with a stoney cold hip-hop classics. It's the bars of the former that are dropped over the shimmering lead synth and 80s analogue beats of the latter to make for something simply irresistible. 'Witness Up' is another big one with two more hip hop cuts smashed together in seamless and effortless fashion. Pure fire.

Review: Polish mainstays Catz 'N Dogz have always brought some chatter to their music - whether that's a smart hip-hop sample or twisted sense of rhythm. They tap into sweaty backroom club sounds for this new one on the evergreen Crosstown Rebels as 'Can't Stand' is a heads-down pumper with a steamy, libidinous female vocal that's nicely filtered over thudding kicks. You can always rely on German Robag Wruhme to take things into weird and wonderful territory and that's what he does with Flodder Bukk Rehand, a darker and more menacing rework with fizzing synths and more attitude in the vocals. 'Wake Up' rounds out with a fractured vocal fragment and rousing synth lines.

This 20th such EP comes from William Caycedo and he nails a groove from the first time you drop the needle on the record. 'Cuban Linx' is speaker busting house that is heavy and dusty with plenty of dub swagger. 'Steppin' Razor' again shows a great swing to the drums but this time a more airy vibe pervades. Review: Florin Buchel's work as Contra Communem Opinionem has bridged the gap between seemingly disparate labels like Lux Rec, Mathematics, Drumpoet Community and Photic Fields without missing a beat. More recently, he's funnelled the CCO output through his own label Silum to bring us some EPs of dazzling hardware tech house with ample melodic content to keep the dark clouds at bay. 'Atmospheric Inversion' toys with jazzy discord, but the vibe is primarily soulful and synth-driven, while 'Atmospheric Extinction' heads wholeheartedly towards uplifting chord sequences to get your hair standing on end. 'Atmospheric Pressure' takes a snappier, techier approach but the tools and signal chains are the same, so the pervading warmth of the tracks maintains. This is house music which instinctively connects back to the gritty strain of machine soul pioneered in Detroit - if you're always searching for that quality in your club tracks you won't want to overlook this one.

Review: First released in 2006, 'Ceerial Port' is the ultimate wildcard in the electro profligate Ceephax's towering discography. The seven-or-eight track album does things with the electro form that few of Mr. Jenkinson's contemporaries would dare ever indulge, were it not for this initial fatherly stamp of approval. lead reissue cut 'Acid Whorl' is the foremost case in point, hard-limiting and soft-clipping a cyclonic 'whorlwind' of pitch-whacked acid effluence. Further 8-bit playtimes come in the form of 'Acid Highway' and 'Acid Causeway', recalling the feeling of scouring the outer edges of an Atari Kart game and encountering nothing but rolling, pixelated skies; 'Tough Grugoy Acid' and 'Woodlice Acid' make up the longer wavelengths on the spectrum, stomping and echo-rimshotting to ever-weighty, yet jolly ends.

Review: Cesare vs Disorder has long been at the very heart of the minimal scene. His abstract sounds and lush synthesis never fails to seduce us no matter the mood or groove he takes. This EP for the small but well formed Rockets label opens with some peak tripped-out sound design, where dancing chords, detuned keys and wonky pins are layered up over a loopy and skeletal rhythm on 'Amoreteca.'
