113 Fout La Merde (reissue)
Cat: SAMPMS 11317. Rel: 13 Jul 20
  1. 113 Fout La Merde ! (3:54)
  2. 113 Fout La Merde ! (dub) (3:55)
  3. 113 Fout La Merde ! (instrumental) (3:54)
  4. 113 Fout La Merde ! (acappella) (3:03)
Review: Thomas Bangalter will forever be best known as one half of robotic disco house sensations Daft Punk, but turned out various house and hip hop projects before and during the iconic pair's rise to fame. Once such outing came in 2002 when he paired doff with French hip hop collective
113 for "Fout La Merde", a raw single with plenty of different versions. "113 Fout La Merde!" in original format bares plenty of Daft Punk hallmarks with its hip swinging claps and vocodered vocals, while the dub is more bumpy and low riding. Add in an instrumental and a cappella and you have a fine package that is long overdue this reissue.

Let Them Know
Cat: JAL 341V. Rel: 18 Jun 20
  1. Let Them Know (feat The Cuban Brothers) (3:37)
  2. Lightning In A Bottle (feat Andy Cooper) (3:22)
Review: If pure party-starting pleasure is your thing, you'll find plenty of instant gratification within the bulging catalogue of Bristol boys The Allergies. Alternatively, you could start with the pair's new seven-inch single, which boasts two steaming summer anthems in the making. Their old pals the Cuban Boys guest on A-side "Let Them Know", adding their distinctive rapped and sung vocals to a hip-swinging mambo-influenced backing track full to bursting with Cuban rhythms, jaunty guitar licks and barrio horns. Over on the flip, regular collaborator Andy Cooper raps his way through a fiery funk-rock-meets hip-hop bomb that will have hands shooting skywards faster than you can say, "Mine's a Tequila shooter!"

For this 2 volume series Andres flexes his blunted downtempo beat-driven side, complete with his primo cut skills celebrating our favorite red, white, and pink libations. Check It Out People
Check It Out People (7" limited to 300 copies)
Cat: SSR 218. Rel: 10 Jul 20
  1. Beastie Boys Vs MFSB - "Check It Out People" (4:19)
  2. MFSB - "People All Over The World" (dub) (4:08)
Review: The latest edition in DJ Soopasoul's "Soopastole Edits" series looks like it may fly off the shelves, and with good reason. The lead cut is not an edit per se, but rather a crafty, clever and expertly produced mash-up that places selected rap flows from the acapella version of Beastie Boys classic "Ch-Check It Out" over a tightened up and fattened up rearrangement of MFSB's disco-era jam "People All Over The World". Sometimes these kinds of mash-ups can be messy, but this genuinely isn't, with the Beasties' vocals fitting the backing track like a glove. Over on side B Soopasoul shares his tweak of the MFSB track, which is entirely instrumental bar periodic use of the band's female backing vocals. In a word: ace!

Cat: MRB 7169. Rel: 07 Aug 20
  1. Strobelite Honey (Maybe We Did mix) (3:50)
  2. Strobelite Honey (3:08)
Review: There's been plenty of great "golden era" hip-hop reissued on wax lately, mostly via tidy and on-point seven-inch singles. Here's another, as Mr Bongo offers up a replica edition of the increasingly scarce "45" of Black Sheep's 1991 scene anthem "Strobelite Honey" - a playful and fun-packed affair that still gets feet moving 29 years after it first hit clubs. On the A-side you'll find the superior "Maybe We Did Remix", in which Dres's entertaining lyrics about courting a woman at a club ride crunchy drums, scratches, squally high pitched horn sounds and a wealth of killer samples. Turn to the flip for the far funkier original version, which lifts warm, squelchy and groovy elements from early '80s disco cuts by Change and Luther Vandross.

Cat: 20207005. Rel: 05 Aug 20
  1. Party Rockers (feat Ash The Author) (3:06)
  2. Batucada Battlebox (3:27)
Review: On the fifth volume in his 2020 Donuts series of party-starting "45s", Bristolian break-digger and beat-maker Boca 45 joins forces with Ash the Author, a Reading-based mic man who has been tipped for great things by a number of more experienced MCs. He makes his presence felt on "Party Rockers", delivering distinctive lyrics over a rock-solid beat peppered with tight scratches and moody, horn style stabs. Boca 45 ups the tempo on heavyweight flipside "Batacuda Battlebox", a riotous cut-and-paste affair crafted from Latin style drum samples, booming bass and the West Country producer's usual sneaky and inventive instrumental snippets.

Cat: 20207004. Rel: 05 Aug 20
  1. Take You Higher (2:49)
  2. Hummingbird (feat Alison Garner) (3:20)
Review: Bristol beat-maker, break-digger and turntablist Boca 45 has released some pretty special material this year, most of it on the 2020 Donuts imprint he inaugurated back in January. There's naturally much to set the pulse racing on the series fourth instalment, a highly limited green vinyl affair that we think will simply fly out of stores. A-side "Take You Higher" is a bustling instrumental hip-hop number based around slack-tuned breakbeats, heavyweight bass, cut-up guitar riffs and all manner of cheeky spoken word snippets. Vocalist Alison Garner guests on superb flipside "Hummingbird", a hybrid hip-hop/bossa-nova number blessed with mazy Hammond organ solos, bold piano stabs and extra-special percussion.

  1. James Brown - "Funky President" (extended Breaks Special edition) (4:25)
  2. The Vibrettes - "Humpty Dump" (part 1 - extended Breaks Special edition) (3:16)
Review: For the second in their series of clear vinyl reissues of some of their most sought-after "sevens", the mysterious Breaks & Beats crew have chosen to revisit their fourth 45, which originally landed in early 2018. It's well worth picking up, if only for the version of James Brown classic "Funky Presisdent", which features extended grooves and breakbeats for added DJ pleasure and double-up opportunities. That said, we're also big fans of the mystery scalpel fiends' light-touch revision of the Vibrettes' brilliant, voodoo funk favourite "Humpty Dump (Part 1)". This, too, makes more of the original's short drum breaks and strutting instrumental grooves, before unleashing the female vocal group's great vocals.

  1. James Brown & The Wu Tang Clan - "Sex CREAM" (3:33)
  2. James Brown - "Sex Machine" (dub edit) (3:02)
Review: It would be fair to say that the latest edition in DJ Soopasoul's "Soopastole" edits series is one of the producer's biggest yet. A-side "Sex C.R.E.A.M" is particularly potent, with the mash-up maestro layering the vocals from Wu-Tang Clan classic "C.R.E.A.M" over a chunky beat crafted out of classic James Brown samples. To our ears, it's arguably better than the Wu-Tang original, or at least a little more dancefloor-friendly. Fittingly, Brown gets the treatment on the flip with Soopasoul getting busy with the EQs on a suitably heavy but stripped back "dub edit" of all-time-classic "Sex Machine". While it probably didn't need tampering with, he's done a very good job of delivering a version that successfully takes the track in a different direction.

Cat: EDITSV 001. Rel: 16 Jun 20
  1. Love Be Faithful (4:35)
  2. How We Rumpshake (3:30)
Review: There is nothing subtle about these mash ups. They are big tunes to blast mud from any sealer you can get your hands on. Block party starting rip snorters, each one draws on a wealth of hip hop standards from Slick Rick to Notorious BIG. Audacious, shabby hitting and full flavour, they are restless and energetic edits designed for nothing other than dance floor destruction. "Love Be Faithful" kicks off with big beats and flutes, iconic vocals and more, while "How We Rumpshake" is a slicker rap jam turned low riding bumper.

Soul Survivor
Cat: TREE 015. Rel: 01 Jul 20
  1. Soul Survivor (3:49)
  2. Scartown Beats (3:21)
Review: Canadian beat maker Citizen Kane mixes up the golden era sounds of his production heyday with elements of soul and funk from years gone by. "Soul Survivor" here first came in 1995 on a full length, then got pressed to 7" in 2018 and now gets erupted by Treehouse. It's a laidback joint with bottomless kicks, swirling pads and free flowing vocals that sink you in nicely. "Scartown Beats" is a little more upright, with horn stabs and xylophone melodies colouring in the airwaves nicely. Both tracks are the sort of timeless tunes any hip hop head needs in their collection.

  1. Smiggty Smoke (feat Touch) (5:30)
  2. Nightlife (feat Fatt Matt) (3:55)
Review: DJ Moves has a new album coming, Moves Presents Hiss 3 Hissterectomy, and this new single on the a-side is taken from it. Touch provides the raps to Moves' beats and the whole thing is a big ode to the herb, with chunky and funky bass riffs, rumbling drums and laid back vibes. On the flip, its the booze that gets the spotlight with an ode to drinking. It's super quick and slick and is taken from the Low Pressure Records album "Fatt Matt and Big Moves Rusty Hooks" released in 2010. Both tracks bang with tongue in cheek messages and sound real ripe in warm summer days.

  1. DR DRE - "Nuthin' But A G Thang" (45 edit) (3:59)
  2. The Lady Of Rage - "Afro Puffs" (45 edit) (4:01)
Review: For those whose Californian hip-hop collection is missing a few gems, the West Coast Classics series should be a must-check. The latest edition in the series of the light-touch "45 Edits" by Ronnie Frazzle serves up two more essential cuts from the peerless Dr Dre and lesser-celebrated Death Row Records signee The Lady of Rage. Side A boasts the superb "Nuthin' But A G Thing" from Dre's iconic 1992 album "The Chronic", in which the main man and Snoop Dogg trade verses over a typically on-point G-funk style beat. The Lady of Rage's 1994 jam "Afro Puffs" is a darker, sleazier and tougher affair, with the Virginia-raised rapper's distinctive flow rising above punchy beats, creepy chords and a filthy analogue bassline.

Review: Earl Sweatshirt's Feet of Clay album from late in 2019 was tantalisingly short in length, but not short in quality. The raw, woozy record found him exploring ambiguous wordplay that will keep you entertained trying to unpack it all for many hours. He himself described the 15 minute work as "a collection of observations and feelings recorded during the death throes of a crumbling empire" and it makes for a physical yet abstract record with emotion to spare. From gloomy and introverted r&b styles to more distorted jazz and loop beats, his silky tones always unify each track with great allure.

Their "Ten of Diamonds" featuring the legendary voice of UK soul, Omar, is now revisited and remixed by a crack team of artists. Don-E goes first with a laidback, sun kissed version to make you well up with romantic feels. After an album version and a cosmic tinged, slow motion funk and soul jam known as "Track 3", the ever on point DJ Spinna serves up two fresh versions with jazzy chords and deep soul vibes that take you late into the night.

  2. Root Down (3:59)
Review: The latest slab of sure-fire dancefloor heat on Wah Wah 45s' "Dubplate" series comes courtesy a Haynesy, a duo renowned for the fat, party-starting nature of their reworks, with turntable wizard Jabbathakut providing plenty of on-point scratches. What we get here is not "edits", but rather banging new hip-hop beats laden with classic acapellas. On side A they bring Jungle Brothers' hip-house classic "I'll House You" back to its hip-hop roots, layering the NYC crew's famous vocals over a bustling, up-tempo, Latin-tinged hip-hop beat. Over on the flip they take on Beastie Boys classic "Root Down", with Jabbathakut's tidy deck-work sparring with acapella vocals atop a weighty club hip-hop beat.

Their latest limited seven-inch delivers two must-check workouts. On the A you'll find the "Rhythm Rug" edit by San Francisco scalpel fiends King Most, a cut-and-paste concoction that peppers a sunny, hip-hop tempo good-time soul-funk groove with excerpts from the acapella version of rap classic "Can I Kick It?" Over on the flip, label regulars and Windy City heroes Altered Tapes provide something even wilder: a hot-stepping fusion of Afro-jazz horns, dancehall style drums and what sound like occasional Q-Tip vocal snippets.

The sound is contemporary and fresh but with plenty of cues from the classics, as well as key jazz elements, ambient pads and heavy beats. The timeless sounds come from Children of Zeus, Akemi Fox, Saffron Grace & [ K S R], with plenty of star lyrical wordplay, heart melting vocal harmonies and late night grooves to smooch up to. Review: Lxvndr is a young female rapper from Charlottetown, here making her first release, while of course DJ Moves is a real veteran Nova Scotia on his 63rd release. "Andromedan Slice" is a heady piece of stream of conscious hip hop. The elastic delivery finds the rapper contort her voice into many different forms while summery flutes and warm, rubbery kick drums make for an inviting groove. It's tense yet uplifting, then the flip side "Been Known 2" is darker, with a more nagging beat and drums that drag on the ground, weighted down by the messages delivered up top. As a taster of the full length album Raw that is to come, it could be no finer.

Review: To our ears, there are few greater golden era dancefloor hip-hop workouts than Main Source's "Looking At The Front Door", a stone-cold classic that remains a much-played anthem decades after it was originally released. Here the 1990 jam gets the reissue treatment. It's available in both vocal and instrumental versions, with both sides doing a great job in showcasing the duo's killer beat - a fine mixture of crunchy drums, woozy electric piano chords, scratched-in samples and toasty bass. Naturally it's the vocal version that we'd reach for more often than not - the trio's flows are particularly good on 'Looking At The Front Door' - but the instrumental is nevertheless a useful tool to have at your disposal.

  1. How Superstitious (vocal mix) (4:14)
  2. How Superstitious (instrumental mix) (4:14)
Review: DJ Soopasoul's last mash-up was an inspired affair that saw him perfectly fuse tracks by Philadelphia Soul legends MFSB and the Beastie Boys. Here he takes a similar approach, placing the rap vocals from the 1995 hip hop classic "How High" atop a suitably funky, lolloping beat crafted from Clavinet-heavy sections from Stevie party-starting floor-heater "Superstitioun". It works remarkably well on the A-side vocal mix, and those who'd not heard either track would be convinced that there was no mash-up antics going on. Over on side B you'll find an instrumental mix that showcases Soopasoul's editing skills; minus the Hip Hop vocals, is a fine re-edit of the Wonderful jam.

Both cuts here are snatched from their debut album Girls I Got 'Em Locked in 1987 and immediately take you back to those golden glory days. Review: The 5 Borough Breaks series has long been a good way of acquiring killer cuts that have some way played a part in the ongoing evolution of hip-hop culture in New York City. The hush-hush label's latest release boasts the full version of Betty Wright's head-nodding soul classic "Clean Up Woman", which boasts a breakbeat that has been sampled on scores of killer rap jams. On the A-side you'll find something a little less well-known: "Zulu War Chant", a 1992 cut by the Afrika Bambaataa and Rusty Egan-helmed Time Zone crew. It samples the familiar groove from "Clean Up Woman", adding a swathe of well known rapped and sung vocal samples and a hard-spun hip-hop beat.

  2. Moe Luv's Theme (2:21)
Review: American hip hop gang The Ultramagnetic MCs hail from the Bronx and bring that real rawness each and every time. Founded by Kool Keith in 1984, the group also included Ced Gee, TR Love and Moe Love and their 1989 classic "Give The Drummer Some" is a stone cold rhyme that is well worth reissuing. It has drums tighter than tennis racket strings and crisp wooden hits, tons of vinyl crackle and of course some slick verse work. "Moe Luv's Theme" brings the funky breaks and scratching, reversed stabs and lively rhymes. As far as pieces of early hip hop history go, they don't come much finer.

Ego Tripping (reissue)
Ego Tripping (reissue) (7") (1 per customer)
Cat: MRB 7165. Rel: 07 Aug 20
  1. Ego Tripping (5:15)
  2. Funky Potion (5:31)
Review: Although they would go on to become one of New York's most iconic hip-hop crews, the Ultramagnetic MC's were fresh-faced newcomers when they first popped up on Next Plateau Records - an imprint better-known for its proto-house and post-boogie releases - in 1986 with debut single "Ego Trippin". As this first ever seven-inch edition proves, it remains a stone cold classic: a heavy, stripped-back "golden era" gem in which the group's multiple MC's aim to get the party started over an iconic beat and weighty electronic bassline. As with the original version, it comes backed by flipside "Funky Potion", a scratch-happy, similarly constructed number full to bursting with effervescent rhymes, crunchy beats and distinctive bass.

  1. Traveling At The Speed Of Thought (5:01)
  2. MC's Ultra (part II) (5:13)
Review: This is the second reissue of godlier standard early rap and hip hop work from The Ultramagnetic MCs that is out this month. "Traveling At The Speed Of Thought" comes from their debut Critical Beatdown album in 1989 and is a real hard hitting tune stuffed with all sorts of punchy breaks that are easily recognisable and have since been heavily sampled by the likes of The Beastie Boys. The Ultramagnetic MC's were pioneers of hip hop in the late '80s and this shows why with its confident lyrical flow, big beats and brash vibes. Mr Bongo, of course, always do it right and that's the truth again here with this vital 7".

Review: Air Vinyl have secured a deal that allows them to reissue the seminal joint album by Benny The Butcher and 38 Spesh. The second part of the album comes later in the year, but the first one from 2018 is in the spotlight here. It's an accomplished affair that draws you int via lazy and long legged beats on the intro then gets more serious and confrontational on "Driver's Seat" (feat Styles P & Jadakiss). Social issues are address square on with tracks like "Gun Or Knife" and sweeter interludes like "Intro" (instrumental) help things move on without getting too heavy on one topic.

Review: This is the first time ever you can own The Beasties' entire set, as performed at the Open Air Festival in St Gallen, on vinyl. This, then, also marks the first live release of this period from the band's long and illustrious career, and one of the first to feature the legendary Mix Master Mike on stage with the rest of the crew. He takes care of the intro and then its straight into hard bars and crashing hits, blistering drum rhythms and mad scratching. This is an essential cop for any and all Beastie Boys fans.

Review: Gangsta rap fans are being spoilt rotten by Sic Records right now. The label has secured rights to reissues of a slew of cult classic gangsta rap albums from the American South. Most are from the mid-nineties and this one from Blackout is no different. Upon release in 1995 it had his native Memphis on lockdown and could be heard bumping from speakers on sidewalks and cars all over the city. Of all his four albums hit was the most enduring - it's menacing and unsettling, haunting and with a sense of paranoia that still pervades today's 24/7 surveillance society. The flows are rich, the production on point, the results compelling.

Review: Budgie is Ben Scholefield, son of the owner of Honest Jon's Records and a now LA based DJ and producer. The Good Book II - Chuuch Preach Tabernacle is his third studio album and another gloriously life enriching collection of hip hop. The whole record is imbued with exquisite soul samples, gospel overtness, found sound recordings and sensuous grooves. It's a feel good, heart warming work that crosses genres and generations with seamless fluidity. A number of collaborators such as Jay Worthy & Buddy, the neo-soul songstress Joyce Wrice and Chuck English all help make this the vital record it is.
