Review: Detroit producer and second Golden Age lover Apollo Brown and Stalley dropped this album of classic sounding hip-hop and rap record back in November of 2021 and it was their first joint venture. It is full of familiar sounds and romantic hip-hop storytelling with drums that any fan of DJ Premier is sure to appreciate and recognise. The raps are clever but restrained and touch on plenty of common subjects with unfazed flow and varied deliveries that are always fun of emotion. It's a record that doesn't do anything particularly new but what it does do, it does exceptionally.

Review: Cappadonna and Stu Bangas come together for a new album on the latter's Brutal Music that is potent both lyrically and rhythmically. Both artists have dropped plenty of heat in the last year or so and now they get tight and cohesive on the emcee's first full-length collaboration with a single producer. It comes nine years after they first worked together on a tune and shows how far they have come with timeless bars and dope beats. Stu has said the album is "a life goal of mine that I have checked off, while Donna added Stu's catalog may be as great, if not greater, than any producer I can name." Wise words.

Review: The Good People & Shar The Analog Bastard featuring Masta Ace is another dope project from this collaborative team. Star himself has produced, mixed and mastered all six of these tunes which are steeped in a classic sound. 'Just Begun' is a nice deep opener with lush chords and smooth mic work. Review: Harlem's renowned THC fanatic Sean Pompey aka 10-year hip hop veteran Smoke DZA teamed up with LA producer Real Bad Man for this superb collaborative album back at the start of the year. It was inspired by the fact that weed became legal to be sold on the West Coast and so comes with bars that are heavily steeped in the spirit of the bud. Signature Real Bad Man beats are carriages for silky bars from DZA while plenty of solid guest appearances bolster the already fine collection of tunes. Flee Lord, NymLo and Knowledge The Pirate are amongst those contributing and it is so good to finally have these available on wax.

Once again here the Zambian-born Australian singer-songwriter and rapper is in excellent form, delivering slick, complex verses that she says are "the most me to date". Exploring notions of race and relationships, amongst other things, her voice is couched in gorgeous broken beat, hip hop and r&b production. Highlights are plentiful throughout - "OMG" is a funky afro beat, "Any Day" is neo soul in the mould of Erykah Badu and "Final Form" is a trumpet lead, warrior queen anthem to get your chest pumping. Review: Before recording As Above So Below, her second album, Sampa Tembo decided to move back to her native Zambia after years spent living in Australia. Reconnected with her cultural roots, she set about making an album that brilliantly blends hip-hop and 21st century electronics with native Zambian musical forms and hat-tips to psych, blues and folk. It would be fair to say that it works - and then some - with her chosen lyrical themes and an impressive array of guests (Kojey radikal, Chef 187, Witch, Denzel Curry and Joey Bada$$ included) further enhancing the offering. It sounds and feels like a genuinely landmark album - something that creates something genuinely new and fresh out of disparate musical cultures. In other words, it's a triumph.

Review: Having previously worked with SBTRKT, Kanye West, Drake, Jesse Ware and Frank Ocean, amongst others, Sampha is no newcomer. This, though, is the British singer, songwriter and producer's debut album, and it's something of an understated gem. One particularly enthusiastic reviewer called it "an R&B album for the ages"; while that may be pushing it a bit, there's no denying that Process is an impressive collection of tracks. The beats are inventive, the electronics crisp, the samples carefully chosen, and the musical touches pitched just right. At the centre of it all stands Sampha, delivering thoughtful, heartfelt and sometimes poignant lyrics in his wonderfully evocative voice.
