Scratchdeeznuts 1 & 2 (1:23)
World Famous (2:18)
Scratchdeeznuts 3-5 (2:10)
Review: After a bit of time away due in part to the pandemic and other geo-political factors, Dusty Donuts is now back and serving up sugar hip hop treats. This new 7" packs in five fine beats from a mix of artists, namely DJ Robert Smith, Marc Hype, Naughty NMX and Jim Sharp. This is the second in the Weapons of Choice series and it is a mix of classic 90s beats and intoxicating samples. The joints go from deep and laid back to more jazzy and sax laced. 'Scratchdeeznuts 1 & 2' is a cut-up and chopped loop for advanced DJ deployment only.

Roxbury (instrumental) (4:11)
Review: DJ Yoda is a pioneering turntables, scratch DJ and hip-hop master who has defined all those scenes for more than 20 years. For this one though he leaves behind his high energy sounds for a much more mature and grown up beat with Edo.G and Nubya Garcia. 'Roxbury' is a smooth bit of deep cut boombap with gently tumbling toms and smooth flows from Edo.G. The icing on the cake is the dreamy sax work from new school star Nubya Garci. As well as the original, an instrumental is included on the flip. Both sides of this one hit different. Must cop.

Copacabana Sand (2:15)
Review: Cold Busted has long been setting the standard for hip hop and instrumental goodness. As well as serving up the latest in their Jet Set series this month, they also invite Belgian beatmaker and fine sonic journeyman Sim Nagai to make an entry into the same much-loved series. 'In Rotation' opens with funky drumming and pitch-shifted guitar licks before Latin flavours wash over 'Cuban Delirium,' a deeper beat with reverential pianos. There is a pure beachside bliss to 'Palm Dreams' with its tumbling drums and hits and languid vocal samples and 'Copacabana Sand' completes the trip with a nice shuffling beat and some gorgeous acoustic string work.

Ultra Black (vocal version) (3:21)
Ultra Black (instrumental version) (3:22)
Review: US rap royalty Nas's 'Ultra Black' features producer Hit-Boy and was released in mid-summer 2020 as the lead single from his thirteenth album, King's Disease. Lyrically, Nas pays homage to all things Black as he draws on his black heritage and African-American culture while the beats remain deeply laidback with jazzy chords up top. In an interview at the time with NME, the rapper said the song "represents love" although some interpreted the lyrics as a diss towards singer and rapper Doja Cat. This 7" features the vocal version and an instrumental.

Review: Belgian producer Sim Nagai is back to take you on a worldly trip with ore of his well designed sounds on this new album for Cold Busted. It will be no surprise to learn once you hear this album that he loves to travel and manages to ably capture that in his work. Equator Hotline is packed with exotica-fuelled beatscapes and transportive vibes. On 'Animal Lithographs' there are lush harp sounds and subtle eastern melodies, 'Floating Through The Delta' is a humid and steamy trip down the river with the gentle patter of hand drums and swooning strings and 'Catching Waves' then carries you away on more gently broken beat loops and sun kissed melodies. This is super warm music for super warm days.

Review: Many years after its release, Illmatic still remains a gold standard hip hop album and one of the most accomplished debuts ever recorded. It's the multi-syllabic internal rhymes of Nas, the tales he tells of life in the Queensbrudge suburbs of New York and the lexicon he uses which makes it resonate through the ages. Of course, the production (taken care fo by Bas as well as DJ Premier, Large Professor, Pete Rock and Q-Tip) and wealth of samples also elevates each tune to a higher plane that few have ever matched since. Including Nas himself, frankly. The album is widely regarded as one of greatest and most influential hip hop albums of all time, so don't sleep on this latest vinyl issue.

Review: Originally released digitally at the end of 2021, Nas's fifteenth studio set has finally landed on CDs. When it first dropped, Magic was considered something of a "stop gap" release by some reviewers - a set for us to listen to while the iconic rapper finalises the third part of his King's Disease trilogy of albums. Listening again with fresh ears, this appraisal is probably a little harsh. Nas is to the point and in fine lyrical form throughout, while the retro-futurist beats provided by Hit Boy - with additional contributions from DJ Premier and ASAP Rocky - have a classic feel that should appeal to those who still pine for hip-hop's "golden era" in the 1990s.

Review: Even if Nas never released another record every again there is a good chance he would maintain his spot in the pantheon of all time rap greats, simply off the back of his legendary Illmatic album. Fortunately, though, he continues to work on new music with King's Disease III being his sixteenth studio album. The American dropped it at the back end of last year and it now makes its way to limited gatefold red & black striped vinyl. The record has enjoyed great critical acclaim for its loose yet complex style and cutting verses. The production was taken care of by Hit-Boy, Chauncey Hollis III and Jasnport J and is truly gold standard.

Review: He will probably always be best known for laying down one of hip-hop's greatest ever albums with Illmatic, but right now he is certainly back in some fine form. He is prolific, too, with three new albums dropping in quick succession, all of them proving he has tapped into some new and rewarding creative reserves. He explores it all here form classic boom bap to Atlanta and Memphis-inspired rhythms with guests like Lil Wayne hoeing him get back to something like his best - not bad given this landed on September 14, 2023 through Mass Appeal Records, on his 50th birthday.

Review: You will not be surprised to learn that the last issue of this earlier in summer sold out almost instantly so Sony has done there right thing and reissued it also straight away. It is a 2002 compilation album by the legendary rapper that arrived a year after the game-changing wordsmiths come back. It includes several tracks that were unreleased at the time having been culled from recording sessions done during Nas's previous studio albums I Am... in 1999 and Stillmatic in 2001. Sparse, lo-fi beats are detailed with observational lyrics about urban life. Nostalgic and personal and a bit of a departure from his usual style, they still bite pretty hard.

Review: New Yorker Has is a hip-hop behemoth who will always be associated with his untouchable Illmatic album, but he has also penned plenty of other words that are almost as good. One of them is I Am: The Autobiography, which they say might be the greatest album never released. It is a connect double album that was originally meant to follow up Illmatic and It Was Written and it follows a superb plot line from the moment he is born during the intro to his death in the outro. The second half of the album then sees him reincarnated but before any of this saw the light of day in an official capacity it was leaked and bootlegged back when the internet was still young and infamous for these things. Now after all these years it finally gets the proper vinyl drop it needs.

Review: King's Disease III is the 16th album from the legendary American rapper Nas and it was one of his many records to be well-received by both fans and critics. His impeccable discography will of course always be compared to his most legendary album, Illmatic, and most of the time it stands up. This one on Mass Appeal landed in November 2022 and now makes its way to vinyl - a coloured version is also available. The production was taken care of by Hit-Boy, Chauncey Hollis III and Jasnport J with Nas proving his famously loose yet complex mic work and digging deep into a wide array of prescient topics.

Review: 20 years after delivering her debut album, GRAMMY award-winning singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Me'Sgell NgegeOcello returns with her first album since 2018. Meant as a kind of re-set on her career and featuring nods to a wide array of musical influences, The Omnichord Real Book is a genuinely life-affirming affair with few, if any flaws. NgegeOcello makes use of a massive list of guest musicians and vocalists (Brandee Younger, Joan as Police Woman, Jeff Parker and Ambrose Akinmusire included) on tracks that variously mix, match and fuse everything from deep and spiritual jazz, soul, hip-hop and P-funk to highlife, gospel, jazz-dance and much more besides. The sound of the summer!.

Review: Nigerian singer, songwriter and actress Nneka takes it independent for the release of her new album Love Supreme. It is a response to majors refusing to allow her the artistic and creative autonomy she wants. The record is packed with emotive ballads like the opener, impassioned tunes like 'God's Love' and the empowering 'Yansh'. Written during lockdown, the record "became about self-reflection, and seeing how connected our inner world is to the outer world." It's a poignant work with rich creativity throughout, infectious gospel energy in places and moody synth jams.

It is now 15 years old and so gets a special anniversary reissue on heavyweight orange vinyl. It's a record that has more than stood the test of time with its politically charged collection of tunes drawing on and fusing Jamaican reggae, 70s soul-funk, drum & bass and electronica. The hit singles from the album, 'Heartbeat' and 'Suffri' appear next to the bonus cut 'Walking' in a lovely gatefold picture sleeve individually numbered.

She has been that way since her debut album Telefone in 26 and backed it up with 2018's Room 25, which is what gets a long overdue reissue on vinyl here. The record has songwriting and production that goes way beyond its predecessor and finds the rapper serve up her bars in conversational almost spoken word style. It lends the record an intimate feel and allows the smart as you like wordplay to really hit home.

He remains one of the gratis to ever do it if you ask us, and all in a relatively short space of time before he was shot by no one quite knows who in an ongoing beef between two warring hip hop labels - Bad Boy and Death Row - on different coasts of the United States. This still seminal album collects Biggie's finest hits and every green classics, packed with iconic samples, mad bars and the juiciest of grooves.

It results in speaker blasting, floor filling, ass wiggling jams that mash up all the most iconic verses and choruses from each singer with their most recognisable guitar riffs, drum breaks and samples. It's a colourful collage that is as fun as it is funky.

He had the flow, the character, the lyrics, and showed all of it on his masterclass album The Notorious BIG. It is now getting a well deserved reissue on double vinyl, with all the original tunes included. There are uber-hits like the ubiquitous 'Juicy', tracks that make astute social commentaries about the black experience such as 'Everyday Struggle' and then some darn right killer grooves like 'One More Chance' and 'Big Poppa.' RIP to the greatest to ever do it.

Review: Late, great and pioneering New York rapper Notorious BIG will always be one of our favourites. Christopher George Latore Wallace, who was shot in March 1997 aged just 25, was known for his loose flow and easy vocal style, characterful storytelling and autobiographical lyrics. He sold over 17 million units in the United States and had many great singles which ensure to this day. This album, Now Playing via Elektra, brings totters some of the most well-known tunes such as 'Juicy', 'Big Poppa' and 'Sky's the Limit,' which will never grow old and are always good to have together in one place.
