My Energy (feat Eva Lazarus) (3:31)
Lesson 1956 (feat Jamie Cullum & DJ Woody) (4:06)
Review: Legendary turntablist and acclaimed beat maker DJ Yoda is back with a new album Prom Nite this month. Just before the full-length drops comes this single from it on essential 7". It follows on from the well-received 'Feel Like Home' 45rpm last month and this time offers more well-conceived and carefully sought-out fusions. The a-side 'My Energy' features Eva Lazarus. It is a lovely soulful slow jam that has a breakup melancholy to it and lovely doo-wop vibes. Completing this package is the flip side 'Lesson 1956' (feat Jamie Cullum & DJ Woody) which is another great revisiting of Americana.

The Rebel - "Body Rockin'" (Ice One Hip Hop Room remix - instrumental) (3:44)
Review: Danno is the renegade master of Roman hip-hop and is part of the pioneering underground crew Colle Der Fomento. The Rebels instrumentals form the basis of his rhymes here while New York hip hop duo The Good People also appear on track two, 'Body Rockin', to bring some classic US styles to this package. Their tune is then remixed by another Italian hip hop legend on Ice One. This then is a package that brings together two different worlds, one more well known than the other for its hip hop, but the Italian team really do represent here and the whole thing fits together like two sides of the same NYC subway line.

I've Got Your Montel (3:39)
I've Got Your Beenie (3:51)
Review: Mash up crew unite! This new and limited 7" from Alloy Cuts is pure bait for those who like to pack a dancefloor with classic hip-hop sounds all mixed and mashed up. Slick Rick's 'Children's Story' provides the hoping bass and drums here while Kelis's most iconic refrain sits up top next to see other rude raps. That's on opener 'I've Got Your Montel' while the flipside features more from Kelis as well as myriad other classics with a fat demob rhythm down below. Madness.

Roxbury (feat Nubya Garcia & Edo G) (4:12)
Roxbury (instrumental) (4:11)
Review: DJ Yoda is a pioneering turntables, scratch DJ and hip-hop master who has defined all those scenes for more than 20 years. For this one though he leaves behind his high energy sounds for a much more mature and grown up beat with Edo.G and Nubya Garcia. 'Roxbury' is a smooth bit of deep cut boombap with gently tumbling toms and smooth flows from Edo.G. The icing on the cake is the dreamy sax work from new school star Nubya Garci. As well as the original, an instrumental is included on the flip. Both sides of this one hit different. Must cop.

Feel Like Home (feat The House Gospel Choir) (3:19)
Don't Mean A Thing (feat Beardyman) (3:29)
Review: Prom Nite is the latest new album from deck wizard ad beat maker DJ Yoda. He announced it and teased the sounds to expect with Feel Like Home - a new single featuring the incredible House Gospel Choir. It's a single that gets you up off the floor after sad news and was recorded in the depths of lockdown. Says Yoda, "It felt great to collaborate with the House Gospel Choir, as they're about as positive, energetic, creative and fun a bunch of people as you'll find anywhere. I'm always looking for the next thing to try out, and to dip my toes into the world of soulful gospel music was a heart-warming process."

Death Blow (3:13)
Review: Hip-hop icon Dooley O is back with more of his killer production for the Nobody Buys label. This is a fifth new release in their 45 series and it's another doozy. 'Stick Yourself' is a mid-tempo joint with classic beats but also plenty of fresh contemporary touches. There are scratches, polished synth sounds, tons of effects and storytelling bars all sinking you into the groove. 'Death Blow' on the flip hits harder so offers something different from the flip to make for a vital little pick up.

Jah Milla - "Special Love" (3:22)
DJ Move - "Special Love" (version) (3:19)
Review: vBlack Buffalo's beefy reggae offerings are irresistibly tasty and this new Special Love 7" is a limited offering from the upcoming DJ Moves album. For special love he links up with 'Jah'Mila' which mixes classic rhythms with some crisp drums and steely digital dub aesthetics. The vocal brings a fresh approach as it twists and turns in emotive fashion. DJ Move goes solo for the flip side instrumental and works the mixing board hard, with spaced out effects and plenty of headiness. It's a great taster for the album ahead.

Drunkenstein - "Super Tuff Killer Tune" (4:18)
Sunz Of Man - "Natural High" (Drunkenstein remix) (4:14)
Review: The Hole In One label follows up its good early work with a third vital 7", this time in the form of a split between Drunkenstein and Suns of Man. The former goes first on 'Super Tuff Killer Tune' which is a spaced out, downbeat exploration of deep space with nice chord work and crisp hits. It's cinematic and atmospheric in equal measure and then on the flip, Drunkenstein remixes Sunz Of Man's 'Natural High.' The bristling beat work and splashy cymbals keep a cool vibe while the hard hitting verses add an extra edge. These are two very different sides of vinyl, but both hit a super sweet spot.

Annihilation (4:03)
Review: Dilated Peoples dropped their 'The Platform' on 45rpm via Capitol Records, a promotional release only back in 2000 that has never officially been reissued since. King Underground change that with this new 7". It takes us back to a powerful moment in the history of hip-hop when the underground acts began to make their mark on the mainstream - a seismic shift that still has an impact today. On this one the Los Angeles-based group pairs mighty mic work with killer beats and plenty of positive messages that whereat odds with the gangsta sounds of the day.

Everybody Pays (Professor Shorthair remix) (4:52)
Review: Connie Price & The Keystones are a modern day 'deep funk' supergroup from Los Angeles, led by guitarist, producer and multi-instrumentalist Dan Ubick and trumpeter/arranger Todd M. Simon. On their new single 'Everybody Pays', they team up with Detroit rap legend Guilty Simpson and soulful singer Destani Wolf for a hard-hitting slice of hip-hop funk. The A-side features Guilty's gritty rhymes over a heavy groove and a catchy chorus by Destani, while the B-side is an instrumental version that showcases the tight, unparalled musicianship of The Keystones, a whopping octet. Vintage funk heads beware; this one's probably gonna find its way into your collections one way or another.

This Is How We Do (remix) (2:51)
Review: Hole In One is a label that's not mucking about. It is seeing up top quality tunes at a fairly busy rate and this sixth one is another joy to the ears of hip-hop lovers. Drunkenstein is the man in charge and he kicks off with the sunny sounds and dusty breaks of 'Live The Good Life' before 'Lean Back' is a much deeper, slower, more jazzy joins for the afters. 'Koi Song' toys with golden era boom bap and some pensive piano chords while a strange lead brings an almost country twist. A remix of MC Gruff's 'This is How We Do' is last up and maybe the EP's highlight.

Everytime (3:26)
Everytime (feat John Robinson - Pat Van Dyke remix) (4:07)
Review: 'Everytime' is the first single off the new album by Lisa Decker and Nautilus. It came about after the label head wondered how Lisa's songs would sound if Japanese jazz trio Nautilus arranged some of them. They have, and here are the results, a very personal new single off a great new album. 'Everytime' is tieless funk with a super sweet and innocent vocal over crisp drums. On the flip is a remix that takes it in new directions with Pat Van Dyke, a longtime known producer and multi-instrumentalist from New Jersey, at the helm. He brings good time horn led sounds with a guest appearance by Brooklyn based lyricist John Robinson.

It is Dooley O who is on the buttons with 'Stick Yourself' bringing those old school flavours, spin backs, golden era boom bap and playful mic work. Review: DJ Soopasoul is back on his own Soopastole Edits label, this time paying tribute to the more great funk sounds and killer drum breaks. The artist is well versed in subtly reworking the classics, bringing them up to date and adding his own unique flavour. Review: Qu'ran Goodman, Taji Goodman and Tarik Dawson are Da Youngsta's, a hardcore hip hop outfit active from 1992 and central to the genre's development through the nineties, most often on EastWest Records America. 'Be Great' is a brand new 2020 single that has lush piano work bringing warmth and soul, and slow motion, gently rotating and spacious drums sinking you into a stoned groove. The rhymes are slowed and stretched to match and the whole tune has an aspirational mood that permeates you're being. 'Be Great 2' is continuation that seals the deal.

That is where he eventually start this own journey and with elements of Stevie Wonder and Smokey Robinson added in, he now lands with a fully formed, heart swelling soul sound. It comes on Defected after label A&R Simon Dunmore hunted Davie down having heard him singing on an advert for Wild Turkey bourbon in the cinema. A big and bubbly dance song with lively instrumentation and warm bass, it will get any party started.

Drunkenstein - "Beat Down Life Up" (4:53)
Fatlip - "Here Comes The Lip" (remix) (5:17)
Review: Drunkenstein is back on his 7" saga grind with this slow burning banger 'Beat Down Life Up' on the A-side, chopping out a downtempo breakbeat over a seriously groovy yet purposefully monotonous psych-tinged guitar line; the instrumental cut flirts with the jazz-funk meanderings of library music yet retained within the confines of boom-bap subtlety. On the B-side, we get a sleepy remix of Fatlip from The Pharcyde's 'Here Comes The Lip'; smothering the MC's fluid bars under a reverberating break and off-kilter organ samples, with some ever-so-slight dubs applied towards the backend to add another layer of drugged out despondency at odds with the animated yet distantly delivered bars.

It's a super tidy 7" with two very different sounds on each side. The first is Mr Doris & D-funk's 'New York Kiss' which is a low slung hip hop joint with East Coast bars and psyched-out guitars. Review: Deejay Skamrok kicks off this own new self titled label with a a live session. 'Piece fo the Rock 1 & 2' is a breaks mix sampler featuring a selection of beats from the full length mixes. The a-side is all mad scratching and raw breaks with yelp gin vocal stabs and some tight as you like funk drumming. It's a red hot joint designed to blow up the floor. Now he's up on Friday's Funky 45 with a hip-hop rooted re-flip to get party people the world over rocking out. 'Marrrtin's Scenario' does a damn fine job of re-positioning A Tribe Called Quest's classic 'Scenario' with some organ-soaked funk, while 'Enta Humpty' goes heavy on the boom bap breaks to provide a heads down groove that should get the breakers breaking and the freakers freaking. Review: Omar S does what he wants, so we are often treated to some surprises on his FXHE label that come seemingly out of nowhere. If they come with his stamp of approval, though, that is enough for us to find them intriguing, at the very least. This one is from Dastardly Kids aka Sonny Dulphi and Pat2Dope and they bring hi tech styles to hip-hop. The sounds are raw and twisted, with spoken-word bars over dense layers of synth and drums on opener '4 Every Day Dastardly'. There is a metallic feel to the icy cold and sleazy beats of 'Bu$$ The Bank', more depth to 'Pesos' which has a cloud rap vibe and more stoned and late night vibes to 'Dastardly Love Song'. A fresh double 7" for sure.

Review: Modern hip-hop production titan Djar One returns with a fresh 7", 'It's The Funk', with fellow stalwarts Venomous2000 and DJ Tron both coming through for neat verses and flippages respectively. While Djar's A-side is nicely gritty, getting at that West Coast, gangster-funk-whistly, top-dropped steeze with ease, DJ Tron's version provides a completely alternate jazzhop take, stripping back the track to its bare bones and preferring to let the mood flow rather than stomp.

Cold Wire (4:11)
Cold Strut (3:52)
Review: Dresden label Cold Diggin has been a consistent outlet for the work of The Duke Ya Love To Hate, which is one of several different aliases that Stefan Senf choses to work under. Usually they serve up just one of his special 7" outings per year but in 2023 two are arriving in December. This one comes on a hand-numbered 7" in screen-printed sleeve and is limited to just 150 copies. A-side jam 'Cold Wire' is a lively mix of breaks, jazzy chord stabs and plunging bass, then 'Cold Strut' slows things down and builds on a familiar funk break and top line melody in alluring new ways.

Review: The Cold Diggin label out of Dresden has long been serving up the work of The Duke Ya Love To Hate, which is one of myriad aliases of an artist who gets by the name of Stefan Senf. They are generally few and far between but are always worth copying when they do drop and this one comes on lovely hand-numbered 7" in a special screen-printed sleeve. 'Introducin' is a loose-limbed funk workout with classic hip-hop breaks and free-wheeling pads. 'Prescribin' is more slow and seductive with its florid melodic leads and lovely lazy beats.

Snoop Doggy Dog - "Gin & Juice" (4:08)
DJ Quik - "Jus Lyke Compton" (4:13)
Review: The Pimpala West Coast Classics series does exactly what it says on the label, delivering tidy 7" singles featuring new edits of much-loved 90s West Coast hip-hop gems. This time round, the scalpel fiend at the controls is Ronnie Frazzle. He first turns his attention to Snoop's Dr Dre-produced mega-hit 'Gin & Juice', a delightfully laid-back 1993 number that's often cited as one of the finest moments of hip-hop's "golden era". Over on the flip it's all about DJ Quik's 1992 Profile Records single 'Jus Lyke Compton', an even more laid-back and groovy affair that pays tribute to the notorious LA neighbourhood that became the focal point of the enormous "gangsta" hip-hop scene of the 1990s.

Aqui Estamos (4:34)
Review: 'Debes Llorar' is the second of two super limited 7"s being dropped by Dez Andres on the fledgling Future Rootz label this month. Like the other one, this 45 pulls out plenty of the Cuban influences Dez is known for. A-side 'Debes Llorar' is all life-affirming chords that fans of his classic 'New 4 U' will recognise, but stitched over ticking and raw drum beats with a Latin shuffle and Spanish vocals. 'Aqui Estamos' takes things down a notch with a more sunset sound, hip-hop flecked deep house beats and seductive vocal sounds next to gorgeous little acoustic guitar riffs.
