Often regarded as the inception of late 80s/early 90s 'alternative rap', the trio incited said era thanks to their declaration of the 'D.A.I.S.Y. Review: The third full-length from experimentalist punk/hip-hop trio Death Grips originally arrived in 2013, just a mere year on from their exceptionally warped debut LP The Money Store and its equally depraved sophomore follow up No Love Deep Web. Made up of math-rock drummer extraordinaire Zach Hill, programmer and synth mangler Andy Morin, and of course the confrontational MC Ride; Government Plates proved the collective were seemingly unable to artistically sit still, while refusing to exude a modicum of stagnation in their prolific early days. Celebrating its ten year anniversary, while just finishing up a chaotic headline set at this year's Outbreak Fest held in Manchester, the mystique and allure of Death Grips has only continued to swell with time, and this overlooked gem (as it falls between two of their most quintessential projects) couldn't be more in need of vital appreciation and reappraisal.

Review: Contemporary New York hip-hop once again gets a run for its money with Deca's 'Smoking Gun', the latest artistic statement from the rapper and producer. Dealing thematically with the life of an artist grappling and wrestling ferociously with a bonkers nation in which failed social services, populist rhetoric and backwards thinking have become the norm, this is a clever and defiant LP from a musician dedicated to his craft, no matter the cost. Tracks such as 'St. America' describe the country as an "inhospitable and eerie environment" in which massive scams and masterplans full of "parasites trying to find a host to sink their fangs" sum up the rightfully anti-neoliberal, deftly lyrical stance of this LP. It certainly marks a shift away from the 'C.R.E.A.M' era; Deca is a voice for the hip-hop that eagerly seeks to watch capitalism crash and burn.

Review: .Often considered to be one of the biggest commercial flops in music recording history, Standing In The Spotlight was the 1989 debut solo album from Ramones bassist Dee Dee Ramone. Released under his rap moniker Dee Dee King, the bizarre project served up an amalgam of old school hip-hop, late 50s garage rock and even doo-wop, all blended together in chaotic fashion, and led by Dee Dee's new gangster bravura. It's been noted that the hip-hop-centric attire seen on the cover was adorned by Dee Dee at his last few Ramones shows shortly before departing, which drew major ire from his bandmates. Tapping Marky Ramone to oversee percussion samples, and even enlisting Debbie Harry (Blondie) to provide backing vocals on 'Mashed Potato Time', and, 'German Kid', with the latter featuring vocals sung in both English and German (nodding to Dee Dee's growing up as an army brat), the album was crafted with every earnest intention of launching Dee Dee's solo career. Conceptually inspired whilst in rehab and used as a project of focus when embracing his newfound sobriety; the sheer enthusiasm and fearlessness of Standing In The Spotlight grants it a pass and a place as a truly absurd offshoot oddity from a vital member of the one of the defining punk bands.

Review: Degiheugi's Only After The Show has been fully remastered for this special reissue. It comes on nice limited edition gatefold orange vinyl across four sides with all 10 original tunes as they were. It first caused a storm back in 2017 as unstoppable beatmaker Degiheugi showed his studio skills. His career overall takes in myriad different styles from downtempo to subtle drum & bass variations, but this long player found him settling on a more traditional hip-hop sound packed with good vibes and real emotion.

Review: A-grade record collector and accomplished DJ Degiheugi has toured with DJ Shadow, dropped plenty of great albums and is a master of smart sampling. Some of his earlier albums are in the process of being reissued at the moment and Aquilon is one of them. It has been remastered for the occasion and cut to translucent blue vinyl 17 years after it first arrived in 2005. It's a worldly mix of downtempo beats and hip-hop grooves with plenty of colour and vibrancy. Some cuts are all about the body-popping beats and others are real late-night mood-setters.

Review: As any fans of smoochy neo-soul will know, Dinner Party is something of a super group. It is made up of the masterful contemporary talents of Kamasi Washington, Robert Glasper, Terrace Martin, and 9th Wonder and is like a modern answer to the Soul Aquarians back in the neo-soul heyday. This is a CD version of their Enigmatic Society album which is a deeper, warmer work than their self-titled earlier work. Jazz and hip-hop and some great samples all get fused into sublime sounds for late night grooving and smooching and make it another essential outing from these musical powerhouses.
