Review: Bronx titans Camp Lo came out strong when they arrived in the late 90s on Profile Records. Of the many sure shots on their debut LP Uptown Saturday Night, 'Black Nostaljack' was a cool, funked up party jam to get every nodding their approval. It's a classic kind of hip-hop, like an East Coast version of People Under The Stairs, and it sounds super fresh on this 7" from Get On Down. As well as the original version on the A side, the flip features the jacked up 'Mix Tape Remix' from Kid Capri, which turns the heat up good and proper if you need to get the crowd freaking.

Review: Casual Connection is a master of mash up and is back to stake his claim on that title once more here on the effectively titled Edits label. This red hot double shot kicks off with 'Message Like It's Hot', which as you can probably guess form the title alone mixes up a Snoop Dogg classic with a stoney cold hip-hop classics. It's the bars of the former that are dropped over the shimmering lead synth and 80s analogue beats of the latter to make for something simply irresistible. 'Witness Up' is another big one with two more hip hop cuts smashed together in seamless and effortless fashion. Pure fire.

Review: Common is a giant of the hip-hop world and his eternally loved 1994 long player Resurrection is one of the best things he ever did. 'I Used To Love H.E.R.' is an iconic tune taken from it, and one that is said by many to be one of hip-hop's great ever tunes. It is so admired because of its great lyrical twist and is now on 7" for the first time ever. This vital rap record is timeless and a perfect personification of hip hop which finds Common lamenting what the genre became and how commercial it was after a mass influx of mainstream rap in the 90s. Review: Andy Cooper is best known for being a part of the Californian hip hop group Ugly Duckling. But he recently stepped out on his own to put out his Hot Off The Chopping Block album. Now, his Oonops label picks out their favourite joints from it for this tasty little 7" pressed on recycled black wax. Out kicks off with the old school breaks and freewheeling Rhodes chords of 'Goin All Out' complete with retro verses. 'Blood, Sweat and Soul' is another classically inclined beat with snippets of James Brown's wordless noises and warm organs. 'Hot Pursuit' goes big on the basslines and 'Jerry's Goove' closes with some, well, country influences.

Review: American neo-soul pin-up D'Angelo has released a couple of the smoothest records of the last 30 years. He even made a welcome comeback in the mid 2010s and added some more magic to his cannon. Here Kero Uno remixes a couple of his tunes and ups their funky quotient to make them more suitable to dancefloors. First, he flips 'Spanish Joint' into a key-laced and funky workout with low-slung, hip-swinging grooves sure to seduce next to the zippy synth leads. On the flip is his hot take on 'Feel Like Makin' Love', another bona-fide gem full of heart and soul.

Review: The exact backstory of this one is hard to pin down but suffice it to say if you haven't heard Darondo's 'Didn't I' before then as soon as you do you will fall in love. It has previously been released on a 7" entitled 'Edits' by Stefan Trischler aka Trishes back in 2010 but with a different B-side. Here it comes on TLM with a 1773 remix on the flip. The original is a hard-ass funk cut with raw and tough drums and splintered hi-hats all topped off with the aching and soulful vocal sample and some distant lavish strings. The flip side version features Cerebral Vortex and has extra bars that add a hip-hop touch.

Review: If De la Soul is one of the greatest hip-hop bands in the world and 'Me Myself & I' one of their greatest singles, then that makes this 7" a pretty essential one. It is an indie exclusive via Chrysalis and comes as much of the American pioneers back catalogue has been made available for the first time digitally and via several vinyl reissues. It is one of the daisy age power group's most feel good, happy and poppy singles with plenty of samples, not least of Funkadelic's 'Knee Deep.' Their first EP sold out in quick fashion because of the irresistible nature of the mash-ups it contained. Now comes a second volume, this time in the form of a couple of edits. Review: EDdits master DJ Bacon returns for two of his boxiest yet on the usual 7". Bacon's production style betrays a kind of Buddhist mindfulness, or at least a minimalism, in its approach; all you need is a good beat, ever-so-slightly abstracted from its original context, to arouse the excitations of both mind and body. The fact of not knowing the sample's origin is part of the art; this condition of not knowing fetishises the breakbeat, by partially obfuscating knowledge of where the sample came from. Titles like 'Sardines Is The Word' and 'TF Megamix' are likely coded allusions to these original desiderata, but only the most hardened connoisseurs, a secret club in which Bacon and a select few others surely fraternise, would know exactly which sample sources these are. Thus we have the continued recreation of DJ Bacon as a purveyor of cool; one which enables us to enjoy the slick roundedness of these beats more than we would if the game was given away.

Review: After four decades in the game, Chicago original Mike Dunn knows a thing or two about serving up killer, party-staring house cuts. He's at it again on his latest outing for the reborn Nu Groove label, offering up a quartet of ear-catching, peak-time ready treats. On 'Git'cha House On' Dunn goes straight for the jugular, joining the dots between UK interpretations of hip-house and Kraftwerk-influenced Windy City house, before opting to add another of his part sung, part rapped vocals to a rolling, piano-sporting good time groove on 'Don't Pay Me No Mind'. Over on side B, 'Rock Ya Body (Deepa)' is a glossy, classic-sounding and percussively energetic big room workout, while 'Le'tcha Love Fall Down On Me' is deep, dreamy, energetic and lusciously loved up.

Review: Funky Dividends is a label that aims only to preserve classic hip-hop gold as it is - they don't do remixes or edits or mash-ups, they just present stone-cold heat. The label has done so before when it comes to The East Flatbush Project, but each and every time the music sells out so this is a reissue of their clastic-era and golden boom bap gem 'A Madman's Dream'. The snares hit crisp, the bass swings down low and the bars are fresh, with distant flutes adding some mystery. On the flip is the slightly more raw 'Can't Hold It Back.' Two essential hip-hop tunes from the halcyon days.

Review: Mple Soul's Fat Jon is back on top form with this new slice of blissed out hip hop. It comes in 7" form on Ample Soul and opens up with the a-side roller 'Your Purpose' which was originally featured on the Samurai Champloo series. It has dreamy chords and gently tumbling drums that are imbued with an enchanting melody line. Flip it over and you will find 'Why We Dream,' a cut with noodling bass and airy broken beats and that is no particular hurry to go anywhere specific. Add in the cute vocal stabs and there is enough soul to keep you warm for weeks.

Review: Filofilx is a classy beatmaker who has been turning out some top notch albums for a while. His last one was Close Distance on the Melting Pot label out of Germany back in April and now come, we assumed based on the shared title, some of the key cuts that we can only assume never made the album. This EP is very much the corner from Forces of Nature, with authentic 90s soundscapes mixing up lush ambient synth designs, dreamy Italo drums and real musical depth. 'Jupiter' is super smooth and seductive as it cruises at high altitude, then 'Tripping' is a downbeat workout and 'The Bomb' takes you to the heavens on gorgeous melodies while the bass plunges low. 'In Your Mind' is perfectly comedown music to close the EP in style.

Review: This is the debut release by the French duo Last Bongo In Paris, also known as Cleon & Jazzy Pidjay. Both are DJs and producers with a background in Latin funk and jazz-funk, and these influences more than strongly shine on 'Green Season', a release whose priority is heavy breakbeats backed by a whismical, live-instrumental flavour. The title track swims and sways through meandering kazoos and psychedelically-filtered falsettos, while the B-side brings up the flip with yet three more incredible live-but-edited-in-post numbers, plus a really weird, never-heard-before 'Bonus Scratch'.

Review: As they often like to do, Swiss label Burning Soul are dropping this one as this standard black 7" but also on these pages you will find a limited edition cream version. Either way the tunes are worthy of your attention from Luana. A-side jam 'Buckle Up' rides a judders mid tempo broken beat with funky bass and stepping synth sequences next to more pixelated cosmic keys. The r&b vocal is sleazy and seductive. On the flip is a trick with plenty of attitude from the vocal which is delivered with seance, control and determination. These are two standout cuts that blur the lines between genres to come up with something entirely new.

On the flip is another gem, 'Let Roger Do His Thing', which is darker, more hard hitting and with some DJ scratching for extra streetwise sagger.

Review: When it comes to crafting party-starting joints featuring classic hip-hop and R&B vocals, few producers can match the output of Gallic rework fiend Jerome Potin AKA Moar. He's in prime form on this ultra-limited "45" too. A-side 'H' crafts a rolling, 4/4 hip-hop tempo beats out of some classic disco licks and then adds Ol' Dirty Bastard and Kelis' vocals from one of the biggest hip-hop hits of 1999. It's a simple idea, brilliantly executed. Flipside 'HH' is equally as funky and accessible, with cut-up edit effects, rubbery slap-bass sounds, jangling acoustic guitar chords, warming synths and the lead vocal from a much-loved R&B jam. Review: Coming to Trad Vibe, French music production duo Boar & The Badlibs impress us to no end with their 7" singles, of which their latest 'Bossa Nova Rico Suave' now becomes a part. The track is a clean nuevo-bossa-nova exercise, underlaid by a pumping backbeat making it equally as worthy of an eclectic hip-hop or downtempo mix. We're sure the nominal pun on 'Madlib' isn't without its inspirations. The King Most remix on the flip side is just as neat, drawing on samba while pinning down a bustlingly percussive groove.

Review: US rap royalty Nas's 'Ultra Black' features producer Hit-Boy and was released in mid-summer 2020 as the lead single from his thirteenth album, King's Disease. Lyrically, Nas pays homage to all things Black as he draws on his black heritage and African-American culture while the beats remain deeply laidback with jazzy chords up top. In an interview at the time with NME, the rapper said the song "represents love" although some interpreted the lyrics as a diss towards singer and rapper Doja Cat. This 7" features the vocal version and an instrumental.

Previously spotted last year on Three Six Zero alongside Felix Da Housecat, now NEZ throws down three varied cuts that show he's one to keep tabs on. First up comes 'You Wanna?', a pumped up peak time house cut with our man upfront inciting the dancefloor to come alive. Review: Omar is a real British musical institution and as such it's surprising but also not so shocking, he has recently completed a stint on BBC soap Eastenders. This cheeky 7" is a reissue of the title track from his album The Man and a fine example of his perfectly soulful vocals and mellifluous melodies over nice broken beat and nu jazz sounds. It represents some of his best work and this contemporary take uses the final few bars of the original track as its starting point in a "part 2" style.
