Review: This clear vinyl "45" dips into the small but perfectly formed mid '90s catalogue of Oakland duo Rappin' Ron and Ant Diddly Dog, whose take on gangsta rap was more laidback and melodfious than some of their contemporaries. 'All Rapped Up', which first surfaced as the pair's debut single in 1994, combines a luscious, laidback, jazz-funk-sampling boom-bap beat with typically descriptive, entertaining lyrics detailing life on the streets of the pair's home city. Over on the reverse you'll find original flipside 'Smoke Season', here presented in extended form. Lyrically it covers similar territory, but musically it's an unashamed G-funk workout full of rubbery bass, smooth synths and P-funk influenced motifs.

Review: 'The Return Of Sasquatch' by American rapper Your Old Droog and his occasional collaborator Madlib dropped last year as a 45rpm that soon sold out. Fans of hard-assed hip-hop need not worry though as this limited edition picture disc is here to save you. The title track is full of big raw horns and dark soul synths, menacing bars and low slung grooves. Flip it over and you're treated to a live rehearsal version of 'The Unknown Comic' which is a clattering cut with lo-fi fizz and static hum adding extra edge, texture and authenticity to the beats.

Review: A-Trak! You may have been introduced to him as a World Champion turntablist, an iconic indie record label owner, half of Duck Sauce, a producer, a festival DJ, a remixer, Kanye's Tour DJ, or former Juicero advocate, but you may not know that he had a hip-hop record label in the early to mid 2000's, known as Audio Research Records. During this time, Trizzy hooked up with arguably 2 of the best hip-hop groups to come out of that era, producing records for Little Brother and the mighty Dipset. One of the very few Little Brother records that 9th Wonder didn't produce, 'Step Off' falls right in line with the LB aesthetic. A-Trak got busy with a bouncy joint that ended up on tons of mixtapes, available only on ARR 12" until now. Same story with the B-side; there, A-Trak teamed up with Dipset for 'Don't Fool With The Dips!' featuring 40 Cal, Hell Rell, J.R. Writer. Review: To mark the 150th episode of Oonops's Brooklyn Radio Show he invited some artists to record some tracks for his for Oonops Drops label. Slick Walk (Merse & DJ Robert Smith) and Fingathing's Sneaky steppe dup first with 'Bird's Lament', a nice cut up beat with twanging double bass and dark cello vibes. South Korean producer Avantgarde Vak says 'Keep Ya Eyes Up' and does so with a sparse beat and moody bass. Last of all is the tight drum funk of Toshiyuki Sasaki's 'Toshi Bonus Breaks.'

Review: Polish group Bloto are emblematic of the adventurous spirit which drives Astigmatic forwards as a label. There's a strong, instrument-oriented jazz backbone to the music, but it equally functions as daring, inventive club music. Drop the needle on 'Szlam', the A-side of this new 7" from the Wroclaw-based outfit and you'd think you were hearing some DMZ-informed soundsystem pressure. That's as much about the looping flute refrain as the breakstep roll of the drums and one note bass drops, but there's still the scintillating energy of a live band powering the sonics. B-side workout 'Scieki' is a moody strutter with a dash of acidic snarl in its stomping bassline and some eerie keys on top, coming on like horror jazz for dimly lit dancefloors.

Review: Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth are a big part of the history in hip-hop during the early 90s. Hailing from Mount Vernon, New York they released two classic albums and a handful of singles to great success. A regular selection on the very influential MTV Yo-Raps show they quickly gained notoriety for Pete Rock's use of obscure soul and jazz records. Here we have the reissue of the 2017 release that brings their most popular track to the masses once again. 'They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)' blew them up big and was their highest charting record. This 7" features the Altered Tapes remix along with the instrumental on the second side. You would be hard pressed to find another track that is the epitome of the New York hip-hop sound in 1992 then this mega-hit.

Review: Japanese producer Shinsuke Taoka is part of a long-standing Japanese tradition of flipping hip-hop, jazz and soul songs, giving them a completely new lens to analyse them under. Under Shin-Ski, the first track under attack is an unidentified Hip-hop sample of Bill Withers 'Lovely Day' (famously sampled for the soundtrack of The Bodyguard by S.O.U.L.S.Y.S.T.E.M.) for 'We'. Shin-ski takes a Caribbean rap version, injecting it with jazz elements alongside the hot flow from the MC. Track 2 'Her' is a complete transformation of Common's 'I Used to love H.E.R.', an abstract hip-hop titan on its own, now with some gentle keys and a subtle drumline that gives the track a sense of intimacy. Fantastic find here, super limited for a one-off pressing so pick up this 7" whilst you still can.

Review: The Heat Rock label has been turning out overlooked gems or stone-cold classics from the worlds of funk, soul and hip hop for a while. Here they reissue the first volume of their Altered Tapes series on 300 copies of limited edition red vinyl. It's a real doozy for collectors and DJs alike as it packs a proper punch. First up is an Altered Tapes remix of The Emotions's 'Blind Alley' which is super sweet soul music with a fresh hip hop beat and big horn sections powering along. On the back side, Phoreyz & Brisk offer a Multramix of Big Daddy Kane's cool and catchy 'Ain't No Half Steppin.'

Review: Main Source cut a sharp figure when they broke through in the early 90s, made up of Toronto's K-Cut and Sir Scratch and New York's Large Professor. Their debut album Breaking Atoms is one of the greatest from that golden era for hip-hop, and there's no shortage of hot tracks to pick for a 7" pressing, but here Japan's P-Vine picks out the classic 'Live At The Barbeque' and backs it up with Large Professor's own self-titled joint. This is early 90s hip-hop at its best, boiled down on a handy little single for those moments when you just want the hits.

Review: We've been treated to a few revisits of tracks from the mighty Main Source and their seminal debut album Breaking Atoms, and now P-Vine are pressing up two of the best on a crafty little 7". 'Looking Out The Front Door' is a stone cold classic through and through, riding a dense and dusty break as Large Professor laments on love gone wrong. Despite the downcast lyrical theme, the vibe of the track is sun-kissed mellow gold, thanks in no small part to the buttery Rhodes licks. On the flip we get 'Snake Eyes', the opening cut from the album which cemented Main Source's legendary status back in 1991.

Review: Black Moon was a vital hip-hop collective from the East Coast. They were making waves at the same time as peers such as Jeru The Damaja and of course the legendary Mobb Deep. They shared plenty of sonic characteristics - the low-slung beats, the dark sense of soul, the pervading menace and moodiness that makes the tunes so alluring despite being stripped back. The bars of course are the icing on the cake and here rapper Buckshot is in fine form on 'Who Got Da Props?' with its funky bass and liquid chords, then on the swaggering, late-night vibes of 'How Many MC'S' with its plucked guitar riffs and snappy boom bap.

Here they present the second part of the dusty-fingered hero's turn-of-the-millennium Pan Rhythm series of 12" singles, this time presenting it on a tidy seven inch single. 'Hip-Hop Band' is a weighty, floor friendly, horn-heavy re-make of the Stetsasonic song of the same name, with local mic man Boo delivering tweaked versions of the U.S crew's verses in his native Japanese. This reissue of Strange Universe includes the original LP version produced by Necro, plus two new remixes by The Czar-Keys and Marco Polo. The Strange Universe was birthed amongst the numerous blunted, Colt 45 malt liquor-fuelled sessions Non Phixion had with Doom at their Area 51 studio in Canarsie in 1998. 'Re:Strain Of Stairs', as the title suggests, reinterprets the song 'Strain Of Stairs' by Japanese rock band The Pillows on the A-side, bringing a loose-hipped drum workout to the ordeal. On the B, meanwhile, Ryow goes all out on a new original featuring Kim Hill, 'Ain't Even Like Me', a song which first debuted online a least four years ago - it's an impressively-made production in contemporary r&b, with exquisite harmonies from Hill.
