Review: Last year's Detroit Get Down EP showcased the very best of Galaxy 2 Galaxy keys-man Jon Dixon, a musician and producer who genuinely 'gets' the intergalactic tech-soul ethos of 'hi-tech jazz'. On Vocal Sessions Volume 1, Dixon also proves that he can write and produce superb floor-filling songs, too. 'Feel Your Touch', featuring the sublime singing of L Renee, is a top-drawer chunk of bouncy Motor City deep house smothered in twinkling electric piano solos, while 'I Keep Falling', featuring Kenny Watson on lead vocals, is an impeccably soulful slab of atmospheric broken beat/deep house fusion. Review: We have been enjoying the early transmission from Swiss label Active Life Worldwide and now, after almost four years since the last drop, they might have served up their best yet with this third EP. DJ Sommer brings the beats here once more having not only featured on the label's last various artists release but also the debut 12" back in March 2020. This is house music with a mix of driving, bumping drums but also real musicality in the synth from someone well-schooled in the classic Chicago sound but not slave to it. Four classy cuts with real character and all sure to cause quite the stir.

That is particularly true on 'About Time' with its spoken word sermon over dusty old drum sounds and hefty deep house drums. The veteran of 30 plus years is in fine form with this single, which is a feel good and super soulful house track for warmer days. A muffled, muted vocal brings a tinge of melancholy, but the funky bass riffs and disco-fried drums raise you up. The boldly but correctly entitled Bollywood Super Hits! collections starts with the exotic house depths of 'Asha' with its whimsical vocals and melodies, then 'Sadhana' layers bubbling bass funk with percussive invention and 'Nazia' is all big disco drum funk and archetypal Bollywood vocals. Review: Archeo Recordings bring us some more Balearic Italian treasure here with some gold initially recorded in Bologna almost two decades ago. It's a collaboration between friends Bottin and Lucio Dalla that has never before been on vinyl. 'Lunedi Cinema' was an ident that played before Monday night movies on of one of the main Italian TV channels for many years. This electronic version includes the Martedi Mix from 2008, a Minibar Bonus Track and also a mix by pioneering Italian dream house dons Leo Mas & Fabrice with a Bottin dub sealing the deal. It's a superb package of real Italo music history.

Review: Here's something to get excited about - an unearthed, previously unreleased recording from Philadelphia International group Silk (best known for their soul smash 'I Can't Stop (Turning on You)', with modern club interpretations supplied by housed-up re-edit maestro Late Nite Tuff Guy. The band's original mix, which opens side B, is a gloriously joyful and breezy affair all told, with the group singing in perfect harmony atop a cheery backing track rich in piano riffs, glistening guitars, and a killer groove. Late Nite Tuff Guy delivers two tweaks: an A-side 'Disco Dub' that brilliantly reframes the track as a non-stop nu-disco party anthem that cannily combines the band's original vocals and instrumentation with a far chunkier, weightier, house club-friendly beat, and a suitably similar 'Short Edit' for those who want to get to the point a bit quicker.

Review: Athens Of The North can usually be found honing their expert craft of unearthing nigh impossible to find disco, and reissuing it in the utmost quality. However, the work of East Coast Love Affair (Euan Fryer and Nick Moore) is deceiving, as it adopts the image of one of said reissues while actually being fully contemporary music. 'Get Down' tops up a slew of master-quality releases for the label, expropriating a vocal line from obscure Minneapolis 'lo-fi' band Quiet Storm and putting it back into an entirely new, drunk-and-high instrumental context (think lasers, whistles, funk basses, an overall hazy sound). 'Can You Deal', on the flip, lends Quiet Storm a similar treatment, albeit for a cleverly hi-lo-fi disco house treatment.

Review: We first got wind that the unstoppable music making machine and generally positive life force that is Leeds legend Paul Woolford would be remixing one of the hottest new bands of recent years some time ago, so we're delighted to finally get our hands on the results. Assuming his Special Request alias but in truth sounding more like what Woolford does under his own name, this remix of Gabriels's 'Angels & Queens' is all about bringing hands in the air festival house energy, big piano chords and allowing the original vocal to bring that gorgeous sense of soul. It's a perfect meeting of pop and dance, as is often the case with Woolford's remix work.

Review: Whatever you were expecting from an album named 'Superflous', forget it. An exploration into all the many paths of light that refract from the prism of house music, Bagarre commands the dancefloor with every track, placing specific emphasis on keys - a side of the genre that the mainstream has fallen out of love with in recent years. The silky smooth jazz house of 'Espirit Coubertin', a more classic NYC brand of vocal house (beset with 80s synth phrases) in 'Truman Flow' and a divulgence into some driving piano acid house with chopped up vocals in 'Annees Folles' to even a more modern, turn of the century approach with the big hit 'Eurovision' - I could go on. A wonderful and tight package, this LP almost feels like a compilation for how varied and versatile the tracks are. The packaging being one of the selling points of course, the carbon impact of the vinyl production promising to be compensated by a French organisation. You certainly don't have to feel bad about dancing to this now.

Review: B2 Recordings is a label run by Greek talent Bengoa as a platform to offer up his own diverse sounds. Here he serves up a new single featuring Pan that is sublime, seductive and deep. The vocals you will recognise from a classic pop hit but here they get all resung in an even more libidinous fashion. The drums roll, and the percussion is loose, and bright but soft chord stabs heighten the mood. Flip it over for an instrumental version of 'Thelxis' that is all about the late-night grooves. Two stylish sounds for romantic moments.

Review: B2 Recordings rolls out more of its quality-assured deep house here with Label head Bengoa stepping up next for a new three-tracker that comes with featured guests Kristina Berger and Brothers' Vibe. 'Idyot' kicks off with deep and pulsing synths and clacking hits that bring an early Chicago vibe next to the libidinous and erotic vocals which really tease. 'Meet Me Halfway' sinks into a super silky groove that is deep as you like and driven by stylish drum hits under a muttered vocal. 'Come On Now' then sinks into a more acid-laced atmosphere with sustained chords keeping you on edge next to loose and jumbled percussion. It's a stylistically diverse EP, this one.

Review: Bengoa's Athens-based-label B2 Recordings has impressed over its first nine releases. The 10th is another fine one to mark the mini-milestone and it comes from Lex, who was last on the label a couple of years ago. His star has only continued to rise since then with fresh beats on the likes of Samosa and Leng and now his brilliant disco house fusions find more new heights with 'Fast Jags.' This is a cosmic workout that slowly builds on nice loose drums with astral pads circling around you and keys withering in sci-fi fashion. Bengoa offers up a raw edit that brings some deeper jazz keys and tumbling bongos and Felipe Gordon's Deep Funk remix ups the house vibes with a nice thumping groove.

"We Belong Together' is another epic deliver from the man, who empties his lungs, serves up irresistible soul and does it over a house beat embellished with heartwarming horn and piano stabs. There are three different versions that vary slightly for different settings, but also a standout remix from Maurice Fulton. The Sheffield based US house don keeps it smooth, with colourful marimbas, a garage-flecked groove and steamy vocals.

Review: Golden-era hip-hop legend DJ Marley Marl continues his adventures in house music, and this time he's got soulful house royalty - specifically Kenny Bobien and Lady Alma- in tow. 'Joy (Hallelujah)' is as righteous, uplifting and life-affirming as you'd expect: a horn, organ and piano-heavy slab of hands-in-the-air brilliance topped off with some sublime gospel lyrics and vocals from Bobien and Alma. We'd argue the track is best in its full vocal 'Extended Mix' form, though the accompanying instrumental is still superb - and arguably more suitable for those who are uncomfortable with the (admittedly joyous) religious messaging within the lyrics. Review: Some four months after he lost his battle with cancer, BBE is releasing Paul 'Trouble' Anderson's final production - a fittingly joyous, upbeat and life-affirming cover of gospel standard "Happy Day" featuring the impassioned vocals of soul singer John Redmond. On the A-side of this 12" edition you'll find the "Classic Main Mix", a bouncy and rubbery fusion of soaring gospel vocals, bumping house beats, mazy organ solos, rubbery disco bass and clipped guitar riffs. It's superb all told, and a fitting final hurrah from one of the UK's most significant DJs of the past 40 years. Review: Sheffield sorts Adelphi Music Factory tend to release bold, peak-time ready workouts that subtly pay tribute to different aspects of the Steel City's dance music story - and often not those more familiar to people outside South Yorkshire. Their latest two-tracker naturally contains a few nods to 'Sheffeel' dancefloor obsessions, though arguably fewer than usual. 'Someone To Believe In', for example, makes use of samples from an R&B acapella (something that early bassline house producers in the city frequently did), blending them with a loopy disco-house workout. You'll also find echoes of the city's mid-to-late-90s house scene on the funky, bass-heavy and disco-tinged flip-side 'Riding High On Your Love', whose sub-bass is just as beefy as that found on all those early 90s, Rob Gordon produced 12"s.

Review: Emil Sunesson is a producer from Malmoe, Sweden that presents his second release after an impressive debut on Australian label Kyoku last year. His latest for Washington D.C. based Better Listen features the sun-kissed and dusty deep house joint "Do You Even?" which kicks things off in an emotive style - reminiscent of homeboys Genius Of Time or Berlin's Money $ex crew. For the most part, the tracks featured on the Butter Love EP are glorious moments of disco edit action - the title track's classic lo-slung groove is a respectful edit of a certain underground goodie - that those in the know will appreciate. On the flip is a thumping disco house stormer that will appeal to fans of Art Alfie or the Robsoul sound on the uplifting "If Not Now, When?"

He keeps on with that deep disco spirit with these four funky and lo-slung jams. ColorJaxx's 'I Know You' kicks off proceedings in upbeat mood, goaded along by a skippy garage beat, some beautiful piano work and arresting male vocals. Review: For our money, early house music - or any house music, for that matter - doesn't get much better than Raze's utterly perfect 'Break 4 Luv.' That rolling bassline never quits, the effortless vocal conveys a sense of romantic yearning we can all relate to and the crispness of the drums just keeps the whole thing bumping next to timeless synth-strings.
