Review: North Carolina's Lee Fields has had a long career with some dramatic pauses, but the last few years have seen him stronger than ever with LPs on Truth & Soul and now Big Crown Records. "It Rains Love" is his second LP with The Expressions, and it strikes a classic Motown note that sounds utterly timeless in its execution. The production definitely has some of the warmth and grit of Motor City classics from back in the day, but Fields' conviction and power in his delivery sounds bang up to date. For fans of Mayfield, Redding et al, this is an unmissable set of rough-edged soul.

Review: After the wild revelations of the first Irreversible Entanglements album back in 2017, this vital new force in jazz and beat poetry returns to International Anthem with a new set. Once again the interplay between the players and lyricist Camae Ayewa is electric, not least on the fraught title track. The subject matter weighs heavy but all too familiar - racial tension and inequality in America given an urgent voice by Ayewa, and perfectly accented by Keir Neuringer's saxophone, Aquiles Navarro's trumpet, Luke Stewart's double bass and Tcheser Holmes drums. This is essential stuff, both in message and in sound.

Review: Everything about Birmingham-based singer/musician/producer Laura Mvula is striking; her appearance, voice, lyrics and adventurous musical approach all suggest a star in the making. This major label backed debut album, Sing To The Moon, is pretty special, too. It touches on a myriad of styles, from the Charles Stepney/Rotary Connection-ish gospeldelia of "Diamonds" and grandiose "Like The Morning Dew", to the twinkling soul-jazz of "That's Alright" (like Emile Sande, only 100 times better) and mournful strings of the beautiful "She". Throughout, Mvula's voice provides a constant reminder of her immense talents. Atmospheric, entertaining and immaculately produced, it's some debut.

Review: This tidy compilation from Dishoom shines a light on the largely overlooked cultural crossover between Bombay and London in the mid to late 1960s. While it is widely acknowledged that Western rock musicians looked to India for inspiration during this period, little has previously been made of how British and American rock, pop, funk and soul inspired Indian musicians. Musically, there are some real gems to be found throughout, from the sitar-laden "Jumping Jack Flash" and "Cissy Strut" covers (by Ananda Shankar and Bill Ravi Harris and the Comets respectively) and psychedelic rock thrust of The Bombay Royale's "You Me Bullets Love", to the Merseybeat-goes-Bollywood brilliance of Mohammad Rafi's "Jaan Pechlan Ho".
