When You Go (That's When You'll Know)
When You Go (That's When You'll Know) (7" Nachpressung) (1 per customer)
Cat: PRS 1004. Rel: 11 Nov 20
  1. When You Go (That's When You'll Know) (3:34)
  2. Over & Over (3:47)
Review: Some seriously dewy-eyed revivalist southern soul here from Daptone's superb Penrose sub-label. It comes courtesy of The Altons, a blue-eyed soul band from Maryland whose debut album on Mango Hill, In The Meantime, is well worth your attention. Neither of these two slow and emotive songs are featured on that set, but they'd fit right in. A-side 'When You Go (That's When You Know)' is impressively heartfelt and languid, with jazzy guitars, sustained Hammond organ chords and a laidback, early '6-s style soul groove underpinning sugary group harmony and lead vocals. Flipside 'Over & Over' is a slow and heart-wrenching break up song that's arguably even more impactful. Impressive stuff.

  1. Hard Times (0:30)
  2. Listen To Me (0:30)
Review: Powerful belters from soul supernova Baby Huey. The only solo 45s he cut for Curtom Records before he passed away aged only 26, this was released posthumously and OG copies regularly go for over 200 pounds. Now reissued on Soul Brother, the two sides give you the full fat Huey; "Hard Times" hits with a raw Lee Fields style gravelly, story-telling delivery while "Listen To Me" shows Huey's deft ability to band-lead an all-out rock jam. Raw and emotional, Huey left this world far too soon.

I'm Gonna Miss Ya
  1. Aaron Broomfield - "I'm Gonna Miss Ya" (4:32)
  2. Broomfield Corporate Jam - "Does Anybody Really Know" (4:01)
Review: For their latest trip into "in-demand collector cuts" territory, Edinburgh's Athens of the North shines a light on the work of obscure Miami artist Aaron Broomfield. "I'm Gonna Miss You" originally appeared on Mountain Records in 1981 and has become something of a sought-after record in recent years. It's a brilliant chunk of rubbery Miami synth-funk rich in mazy synthesizer solos, elastic slap bass and the urgent hustle of P-funk. Over on side B you'll find the cosmic soul bump of "Does Anybody Really Know", which appears to a previously unreleased vocal workout featuring some deliciously fuzzy electric guitar solos.

  1. Just You & Me (4:26)
  2. Blame It On Me (5:47)
Review: Another tape extracted from the Sony vault for the first time since the record was released in 1980. A floaty disco masterpiece by an American group that has been on the soul scene for time, but deserves a broader appreciation. Edinburgh's Athens Of The North (premium licensed rare music done right!) present this in a rare issue format, with the emotive and uplifting soul power of "Just You & Me" on the A side and the beautiful ballad "Blame It On Me" on the flip - apparently most original copies are missing this track. How the band never made it past one single is a complete mystery, as both of the tracks are incredible.

Review: Ultra Vybe remain deep in their Brunswick excavations with these two sublime cuts from the label's super troupe of session players Directions and their one and only album. Released 1976, OG copies fetch almost L200 and just these two tracks alone hint at why. Shimmering with a strong Faze-O feel with an evocative contrast of falsetto and deep baritone and twinkling instrumentation, both tracks swoon with everything that was so smooth and emotional about the label who gave the world Jackie Wilson, The Chi-Lites and Gene Chandler. Show some love.

Basa Basa (7")
Cat: PH 45014. Rel: 22 Mar 18
  1. Basa Basa (4:08)
  2. Sahara Akwantuo (3:46)
Review: Those with a deep knowledge of Berlin's Ghanaian ex-pat "burger-highlife" scene may already be familiar with Lee Dodou, a singer who recorded a number of classic singles and albums during the 1980s as part of bands Georg Darko and Kantata. He retired from music in 1991, but has been persuaded to return to action by the Philophon team. This comeback single is pretty impressive all told, with A-side "Basa Basa" - a triumphantly celebratory chunk of 1960s "concert party" highlife rich in punchy horn lines and Dodou's full-throated vocals - being joined on the flipside by the slower, synth-laden "Sahara Akwantou". Brilliantly, the label describes this as "kraut-life" due to its unique (and rather good) fusion of highlife and German kosmiche.

  1. I Like Your Style (3:24)
  2. The Love I Found In You (feat Chuck Edwards) (4:15)
Review: During the 1970s, San Francisco-based family band The Edwards Generation released a handful of obscure singles that are now sought by funk and soul collectors the world over. These very same collectors should enjoy this tidy seven-inch on Cordial, which offers up two previously unheard recordings from the Chuck Edwards-helmed outfit. A-side "I Like Your Style" is a breezy and laidback dancefloor mover, with a sweet lead vocal, rubbery slap bass, jangling guitars, fuzzy horns and unfussy but floor-ready drums. Chuck Edwards sings lead on the loved-up, West Coast style goodness of "The Love I Found In You", a sunshine-ready number that's arguably the stronger of two killer cuts.

Traveling Through The Land
  1. Traveling Through The Land (3:51)
  2. Stop This Fussing & Fighting (3:25)
Review: Cordial Recordings has dug deep for this third release. It comes from the Arthur Goodjoin-helmed Singing Tornados, a band that emanated in the 1950s and are still performing locally in South Carolina today. The two songs showcased here naturally come from their most hard-to-find 7" (an original copy would set you back a four-figure sum). "Travelling Through The Land" is an impassioned soul number that sits somewhere between the stomping sound of Detroit and the more orchestral Philadelphia International sound. Typically, B-side "Stop This Fussing & Fighting" is a more laidback - if no less impassioned - affair, with Goodjoin pleading for World peace over a sumptuous, slow and groovy backing track.

Review: Standby for some read hot early 70s North Soul goodness on this vital Quentin Harris reissue. The 7" was first put out as a private press and its two tracks were recorded after Harris released his Statements album. This is the first ever vinyl reissue and is super limited to just 250 copies. 'Protect Me From Myself' rides a deep cut groove with silky bass and has big horn stabs next to some soul stirring vocal work. 'I'll Always Love You' on the flip then strips things further back to a heartbreaking soul sound with twirling stings and warm horns, lush backing vocals a sing along chords that will melt even the blackest of characters.

Review: It's been a weird summer for sure in 2020, but you can improve yours by a guaranteed 100% with the addition of this hard to fine and often expensive 1980 great. High Frequency was a disco offshoot of Aleem, a boogie-funk, r&b and dance music trio formed in New York City. "Summertime" is the sort of bristling and infectious disco cut even the stony hearted can enjoy. The funky bassline, the feel good vocals, the lush chords - it's a real pearl of a track. The instrumental is just as feel good and uplifting. What a 7" this is.

Cat: DAP 1019. Rel: 11 Nov 20
  1. What If We All Stopped Paying Taxes? (4:40)
  2. This Land Is Your Land (4:28)
Review: Daptone recently released a killer collection of archival cover versions by in-house band the Dap-Kings and their sadly departed lead singer Sharon Jones. One of the headline attractions on that set, the band's righteous, call-to-arms soul version of Woody Guthrie's folk anthem 'This Land Is Our Land', is also featured on this must-have reissue of a "45" that first dropped in 2004. It's superb, but even better is A-side 'What If We All Stopped Paying Taxes?', a floor-friendly conscious soul/funk crossover written and recorded at the height of the second Gulf War with Iraq. As usual, Jones' impeccable lead vocal is supported brilliantly by the band's fiery instrumentation and Bosco Mann's fuzzy, sixties-style production.

Cat: PRS 1003. Rel: 11 Nov 20
  1. Language Of Love (3:09)
  2. La Vida Es Fria (3:21)
Review: Miami soul man Jason Joshua Hernandez-Rodriguez was last seen (and heard) lending his slick, emotive vocals to local "organ funk" combo Scone Cash Players' 2019 album "As The Screw Turns". Here he joins forces with producer Bosco Mann and a specially assembled group of Florida-based backing musicians for a first single on Daptone's "Southern Soul" offshoot Penrose. "Language of Love" is a pleasingly heavy but jaunty affair where headline-grabbing horns and Hernandez-Rodriguez's impassioned lead vocal ride a bustling Latin soul groove. The Floridian artist takes a different approach on the flip, doffing a cap to Joe Bataan on a heart-aching, mid-tempo torch song full of tumbling violin lines, and sumptuous soul grooves.

  1. He Does It Better (3:30)
  2. Scarborough Fair (3:40)
Review: When compiling the most recent edition of their "Praise Poems" compilation series, the dusty-fingered diggers at TRAMP Records decided to include a cut from Marva Josie's 1973 album-length collaboration with the Earl "Fatha" Hines Orchestra, "This Is Marva Josie". That track, the brilliant soul-jazz breeze that is "He Does It Better", is here reissued on "45" for the first time. It features Josie's sweetly sassy lead vocal sitting atop a sparse but swinging jazz groove and some seriously good piano playing. You'll find another gem from that album on side B: Josie's orchestral jazz rendition of English folk standard - and Simon & Garfunkel favourite - "Scarborough Fair". If anything, that's even better than the A-side - and that's saying something.

Review: Even though it appeared on his fine 1971 album "Headless Heroes Of The Apocalypse" - a suitably dystopian set in which our hero rails against the ills of godless society - "Jagger The Dagger" is not one of Eugene McDaniels better known tracks. Yet as this Japanese seven-inch reissue proves, it remains a superb chunk of bizarre-but-brilliant jazz/rock/soul fusion full of delay-laden country style guitar solos, weirdo backing vocals, sumptuously laidback grooves and vocals that take aim at Mick Jagger and his "devil's dance". Flipside "Cherrystones" is a Vietnam War-era civil rights cry built around good old-fashioned fuzz-toned grooves, Chuck Berry style rock 'n' roll guitar solos and a pretty crazy lead vocal.

Review: Bobby Oroza has long been a key sideman in the Finnish Music Scene but now he's stepping out on his own and is a welcome voice indeed. Straddling a divide be-tween blue eyed soul and rock balladry once again on this latest single, he does a convincing job indeed. His own dreamy flute lines and gentle percussion tumble lie next to churning drums, but it's that super sweet vocal that makes "Strange Girl" so strong. "Down on My Knees" is more tender and introspective but just as good and sounds more like the work of someone from Southern California than the Nordic countries.

This rare-as-hens-teeth reissue of Reunion's impossibly hard-to-find boogie monster "When The Well Runs Dry" is like gold dust being sprinkled all over our charts, seeing as this goes for BIG bucks up on Discogs, and this alternative mix is sounding even badder than the original one we're used to - that early boogie magic shines through with every new strum of that funky guitar. The original, loaded with an urgent Les Brown leading the charge, is known across rare groove and funk circles but the unreleased A-side is a lesser spotted animal... Produced by Miami studio genius Willie Clarke, this version fixes our focus plainly on the raw honesty of Kat Roberts solo and sounds all the better for it. Leaner and more emotive, it adds a whole new chapter to a cult classic.

Soon, the London-based label will be releasing a previously unheard album from former Stax and Gamma act Sons of Slum, who were once said to be Chicago's finest live act of the 1970s. The seven-piece ensemble are in blistering form on "Music Is Message", a life-affirming anthem built around thrilling horn lines, great group vocals and the kind of driving, bass-heavy disco-funk groove that makes you want to throw some serious shapes. "Quantum Connection" springs with a bruk-like energy but chats in fluent jazz via the eastern horns and spiralling hook narrative. Review: With Cordial Recordings, LoveVinyl's Roual Galloway is doing a terrific job in making rare, sought-after tracks available to a wider audience. In truth, you'll struggle to find a more rare and expensive gospel killer than The Tolbert Family Singers' "Ride The Gospel Train", a drum machine driven chunk of gospel-boogie with crunchy funk guitars that's been changing hands for hundreds of pounds online. Andrew Weatherall is a fan and it's easy to see why. Flipside "Give it Glory", a solo cut by Tolbert Family patriarch Brother OC Tolbert, is a sweeter and breezier slab of gospel-soul that has never before been released on vinyl. Two killer cuts for the price of one: nice one, Roual!

Originally released on Giant and Calla respectively (and licenced, remastered and released with Shirley's total blessing), "Tell The Truth" is a raw bluesy workout with fired up harmonies and brazen horns squeezing every bit of honesty from our souls, "Because I Love You" hits with a little more soul thanks to the big backing vocals and added melodic layers but strip it down to the bare bones and it's nothing but raw, unapologetic funk... It appeared on his 1976 album Musical Massage, released on Motown. The album featured guests such as Minnie Riperton (vocals on "Instant Love" the B-side cut featured here), Bobby Womack and of course Marvin Gaye - who ended up doing a cover also. Not to mention the likes of Zulema, Willie Hutch, Jason Weaver and later The Fugees. Ware and Ross also penned the classic Marvin Gaye hit, "I Want You" several years afterwards, in addition to working with Quincy Jones and Maxwell. Ware passed away in 2017, at the age of 77.

Review: According to the South American music specialists at Matasuna Records, Ralph Weeks' 1971 single "Let Me Do My Thing" - recorded alongside backing Los Dinamicos Exciters - is arguably the most sought-after Panamanian soul record around. As this reissue proves, Weeks' original version is rubbery, heavy and rousing, with the singer's rasping lead vocal soaring above a weighty backing track that sounds like a breezier take on the New York boogaloo sound. On the flip, Voodoocuts tools it up for modern dancefloors, underpinning his club-ready edit with punchy new drums that give the cut more of a breakbeat style swing.
