Must Be The Beat (3:40)
Review: Sam Don (the man behind recent lovers' rock and UK soul comps For The Love of You and Just A Touch) kicks off his brand new label Sweet Free Association with a reissue that takes us all the way back to 1984. The artist behind it, keyboardist and composer Carl Moore, only pressed up 100 copies of this when he put it out back then so it is a truly rare and coveted 7" that comes from a man who went on to be associated with peers with artists such as Phyllis Hyman, Janet Jackson and James Cleveland. The tune is an energetic and upbeat one with carefree grooves, nostalgia for teenage loves and plenty of great vocals from Moore.

Review: This is some much anticipated reissued soul treasure from 1983 that comes on black wax as well as yellow, which is also available on Juno. It was originally written by the legendary Larry McGee and though it is over 40 years old now it is still irresistible. This track effortlessly fuses disco, UK street soul, and boogie, creating an irresistible tune suitable for both dance floors and intimate home listening sessions. Featuring lovestruck vocals, persuasive basslines, and sultry saxophone melodies, 'Space Lady' mesmerises listeners from beginning to end. Flipping over this 7" vinyl reveals an extended version crafted specifically for DJs, guaranteeing seamless transitions on the turntables. A genuine gem that continues to shine brightly, even after the passage of time.

Kalma's mastery of wind instruments, Chiu's electronic experimentation, and Honer's emotive vocals blend seamlessly and weave a tapestry of sound that evokes a sense of serene tranquillity. It arrives on Gearbox records and features music taken from his sold out date back in summer 2023 at London's Barbican. The man himself is now 84 years old but is drawing on all those years playing to make the most majestic music of his career, with heart swelling piano and enticing melodies all serving as life affirming reminders. Parts of this feature the full recording including the audience and parts are music only, with spoken word snippets interspersed to make it seem all the more cosmic.

Review: Washington DC-based label People's Potential Unlimited is one of those that seems to have an endless supply of magical sounds that all very much fit with its MO and are all pretty unique. Often times that is down to the smart digging of the owners who unearth plenty of treasures for reissuing but this time out it is a new record from a contemporary outfit, TAMTAM. The four piece band formed in Tokyo and started making reggae and dub before moving on to jazz, soul, new age and psych-pop. They bring subtle euphoria to what they do as well as catchy grooves and nostalgic melodies as exemplified here on this mature new work that will be lapped up by fans of Khruangbin.

Review: Mike "DJ Tron" Mory brings some super steamy summer vibes to Burning Sole with this heavily limited 7". He has been mixing beats since he was 14, apparently, so has a broad knowledge or everything from Italo to disco to salsa as showed here. 'Candela' brings the first to start with - organic percussion and Brazillian rhythms with natty keys and wordless vocals. On the flip side is 'Los Cojones', a more high tempo and hard hitting groove with wild guitar licks ramping up the energy levels and firing up the dancefloor.

Review: Colin Curtis Presents another superb EP here which has been put together "to enlighten the listener to the two very different sides of this project." On the A-side, Stefano De Santis showcases a vintage spiritual jazz side with Afrobeats and plenty of funk in the drums. On the flip is a more broken boogie vibe with big disco strings courtesy of The Sunlight Orchestra. It's a life-affirming sound that fills you with sunshine and then last of all comes an Eastern Bloc Extension of 'Barra Nova' that rides on lush broken-beats all lit up by lush chords.

This Feeling (Da Lata instrumental remix) (5:35)
Review: Here's something to make the heart sing: two recent future classics from long-serving Japanese nu-jazz collective Kyoto Jazz Massive, remixed by awesome West London keys-man Kaidi Tatham and similar long-serving British duo De Lata. Tatham delivers sublime vocal and instrumental reworks of Roy Ayers collaboration 'Get Up', re-casting the track as a sun-soaked, slowly rising slab of soulful gorgeousness rich in broken house beats, dazzling electric piano licks, rubbery jazz-funk bass and spacey synths. Over on the flip, De Lata delves into their bag of Brazilian influences and delivers vocal and instrumental revisions of 'This Feeling' that sit somewhere between summery samba, afternoon-ready soul and life-affirming nu-jazz.

It was his third album as band leader and came when Booker was Charles Mingus' chosen tenor sax player. His career lasted only a decade as he did young but amassed a fine body of work in that time, not least this album which showcases Ervin's unique playing style - he has an urgent feel to his playing, a biting tone, and real energetic drive to what he does whether amongst a Mingus nonet or leading his own group.

Review: Inokashira Rangers are kwon around the world as a legendary group of Hammond-heavy reggae masters with a fine knack for laying down big cover versions. Their take on 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' was recently reissued to great acclaim recently and now we get two more gems. First is Radiohead's 'Creep' which has haunting leads and echoing pads capturing the freaky vibe of the original. There is a more laidback vibe on the flip with 'I'm Not In Love' which has noodling synths and lazy drum loops sinking you in deep.

Review: Those who keep a keen eye on the contemporary British nu-jazz scene should already have encountered producer Tom Funk's The Sultan's Swing project. He's already released a trio of fine albums under the alias, each of which combines authentic jazz, jazz-funk and acid jazz instrumentation (provided courtesy of a rotating cast of guest musicians) with nods to trip-hop, downtempo, dub, Balearica and Latin beats. The Sultan's Swing Sessions, Funk's contribution to the Colin Curtis Presents series, takes a similar approach, with predictably excellent results. Our picks of a very strong bunch are the gently spaced-out dancefloor Latin jazz of 'Lotta Arlotto', the summery jazz-fusion of 'Hitchfunkers Slide To The Galaxy' and impeccable opener 'The New Beginning'.

Nagoriyuki (3:40)
Review: By now, we've become accustomed to Japanese outfit Inosakira Rangers offering up reggae and vintage rocksteady style cover versions of pop and dance tracks of old. Their latest cover, of James Brown classic 'Sex Machine', is a little different. It's no less warm, dusty or on-point than its predecessors, but there's no reggae or rocksteady flex - just a warmer, more laidback take on the funk classic, complete with distinctive lead vocals from Keichi Sokabe. They're back in lazy, Sunday afternoon rocksteady mode on original B-side 'Nagoriyuki', a sweet and quietly soulful number that pushes the band's bassist and organist - or more specifically their fine instrumentation - high in the mix for added nostalgic pleasure.

Review: Delvon Lamarr has been working his magic on the organ for years, backing up artists from Lucky Brown to Dog Shredder and The True Loves, but these days he puts his keys front and centre with his own sure-shot trio. Hot on the heels of 2021's widely celebrated I Told You So, Lamarr and his band are back once more with Cold As Weiss. As well as the sweet organ flexing, Jimmy James holds the groove down on drums while Daniel Weiss chops it up on the guitar. Seriously smooth and funky as hell, Lamarr brings it full force on this latest crucial cut.

And now he offers up this splendid double 12". It is a masterful mix of pensive piano, jazz chord work and downtempo drums. There are lush, synth laced soundscapes for late night lovers, funk-fuelled, sax-driven jams and then cosmic, starry-eyed mood pieces that encourage your mind to wander. It is another essential release from this fine talent.

It's A Shame (4:18)
Review: Over the last decade, Inokashira Rangers have proved that you can turn pretty much any track - whether it's a TV theme tune, rave banger or grunge classic - into a reggae or rocksteady gem if you know what you're doing. They're at it again on their latest "45", which opens with a storming, largely instrumental reggae-soul version of Edwin Starr's 1968 soul classic '25 Miles'. Their version - full of reverb-laden drums, fuzzy organ motifs, mazy solos, warming bass and JB's guitars - is naturally hugely different to Starr's version, but recognisably the same song. Their flipside take on Spinners' classic 'It's a Shame' is rather more difficult, with the trio slowing it down to a skanking reggae crawl while retaining the familiar melodic refrain.

Call Of The Wild & Peaceful Heart (21:18)
Review: Tenor saxophonist Billy Harper played with many of the greats of the hard bop and post-bop era, and they in turn often guested on his solo albums. He made loads of those over the course of his career, with 1975's Black Saint being arguably the most revered. Joined by bassist David Friesen, drummer Malcolm Pinson, pianist Joe Bonner and trumpeter Virgil Jones, Harper delivered an album in which his expressive, energetic, fluid and occasionally near breathless solos took centre stage on a trio of epic, post-bop workouts. The real star of the show remains 21-minute flipside 'Call of the Wild and Peaceful Hearts', which moves from quiet contemplation to riotous intensity via some genuinely breezy and attractive middle sections.

Filled with six dubby manifestos to the beauty and importance of the environment and nature around us, Green Leaves has sublime vocals by the late, great, Guatemala born, Nigeria based Sheila Majekodunmi over an electric dub sound with old school synth sounds and nice rolling rhythms. This marks her only album as she sadly died in her forties. It's a great mastering job by Superfly that makes this an essential one for any time of year, but particularly as the weather starts to warm up.

It captured his quintet's transition and came a year ahed of another recording session that gave rise to his definitive hit, 'Song For My Father', which is also included as a tribute to his father, who was of Cape Verdean heritage. This Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition is an all analogue affair that has been remastered by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes, so sounds superb.

It's a set that has been promised for the best part of five years, so it's fantastic to see it finally materialize. Musically, it explores similar sonic territory to Oho's previous singles on Philophon (all of which featured music from Weissenfeldt), effortlessly joining the dots between traditional Ghanaian styles, local interpretations of funk and soul, dub-wise reggae rhythms and occasional nods towards contemporary electronic beats. The results are superb, making this a must have for those who love a bit of West African musical positivity.

Review: Earlier this year, Durand Jones and the Indications delivered one of the revivalist soul albums of 2019: the conscious, politically charged "American Love Call". Their latest "45" boasts one of the album's standout moments, "Morning In America", a weary but impassioned commentary on Trump's United States that features evocative strings, laidback 60s soul grooves and a stunning lead vocal from Durand Jones. It comes backed by previously unheard cut "Cruisin' To The Park", a lusciously sugary, heartfelt and loved-up affair where drummer Aaron Frazer handles lead vocals. Like the A-side, it's a stunning slice of emotion-stirring soul.

It seems fitting, then, that his latest compilation - a triple-vinyl epic - should explore the disco and electrofunk gems lurking in his vast vault of records. There are a few well-known gems (Disco Dub Band, World Premiere, Freedom and Sure Thing's modern electrofunk anthem "Holding Me Tight", for starters), but far more overlooked or slept-on gems (Advance's boogie killer "Take Me To The Top" and Jimmy Bo Horne's "Is It In" being great examples). Review: Peace and football: not only the best compilation album title of 2006 (and possibly every year since) but also an immaculate collection of Brazilian folk, funk, disco and soul by Sonar Kollektiv champs Jazzanova. Ten years on and the SK dons are back with a second edition of Paz E Futbol, compiled with just as much care as an homage to football's spiritual home as that debut record. To adopt the football parlance, the band's digging duties score goal after goal after goal; the smoky Simoneisms of Ary Lobo, the heavenly vibraphonics of Skymark, the slippery time signature and almost cosmic bossa of Lucas Santana, the raw jazz soul of Nathan Haines, the list goes on. Peace out.
