Flowers EP (12")
Cat: SS 048. Rel: 08 Sep 18
  1. Andrew Ashong & Theo Parrish - "Flowers"
  2. Andrew Ashong - "Take It Slow"
  3. Andrew Ashong - "The Way She Moves" (short version)
Review: At first glance, the pairing of Forest Hill resident Andrew Ashong and Sound Signature boss Theo Parrish would seem strange. But the duo have worked together previously with the Ghanaian born vocalist (and supposed owner of a vinyl collection that would make most record shops look like a car boot sale) lending his soulful tones to Parrish's excellent nine minute plus translation of the Hot Chip and Spiritualised affiliated About Group. Whereas that collaboration was more about Ashong's voice being just one element of a production that was undoubtedly Parrish, the three tracks present on the Flowers EP look to showcase what a talent the Londoner is. Those trademark dust filled stacatto rhythms are present in the opening title track, but they never swamp Ashong's killer vocal delivery, while "Take It Slow" is bonafide D funk of the highest order. After the brutal, divisive nature of Theo's kung fu experimentalism on the Any Other Styles EP, these three tracks show him in a wholly new light and hopefully Parrish and Ashong will be making much more music together.

  1. It's A New Day (3:05)
  2. Trespassing (4:05)
Review: Two all time funk/soul classics from the Skull Snaps - a funk group active between 1963 and 1973. They were known as The Diplomats up until 1970 and released a number of singles with moderate success. Renamed Skull Snaps, they released an eponymous album on the small GSF label in 1973, before disappearing into obscurity. These selections are from the said album. New 7" reissue label Dynamite Cuts is releasing these two gems as a limited edition 500 only pressing, showcasing the two best tracks on the LP. Both have been heavily sampled in many hip-hop and club classics by Eric B. & Rakim, Digable Planets, DJ Shadow, The Prodigy and Panjabi MC to name but a few.

  2. Up Above The Rock (edit) (3:04)
Review: Galaxy Sound bust open a new bottle of 2019 by dusting off two jazz funk classics and giving them just a little tweak for these floor-primed 45s. John Klemmer's wyled out sax on the totally uncaged and freeform "Free Soul" says all you need; spirited, unpredictable and full of energy. Ray Bryant's "Up Above The Rock" brings us back down to earth with its trident piano strikes and that classic break that's been sampled by everyone from Roni Size to the Wiseguys. Now time to hit the source.

Review: Kalita Records are proud and honoured to announce the first ever official reissue of the Sophisticated Ladies' sought after 1980 New York disco single. The short-lived outfit consisted of Emma, Laura and Reather, who released two singles between 1977 - 1980. They toured America (while also touring internationally as The Bobbettes) and received radio airtime throughout the country. Here Kalita have chosen to highlight their scarce cut "This Ain't Really Love" and have invited The Mighty Zaf to rework their version of Bobby Womack's "Check It Out" making it perfect for modern disco dancing.

  1. Strung Out
  2. Prescriptions
Review: Late last year Los Angeles-based synth obsessive Nicholas Benedek made his PPU bow with a untitled album filled with untitled tracks, executed with the sort of lo-fi panache that fit the label to a tee. Here Benedek returns to PPU as RX, a rather surprising self-styled 'smog prog' project with LIES artist and LA Club Resources boss Delroy Edwards. Taking shape in a signature PPU 7 inch, both "Strung Out" and "Prescriptions" sound like a fine balance between the hazy boogie of Benedek and the tape degraded grit that's been a hallmark of Edwards work since his emergence on L.I.E.S.

Review: Look into Charles's history and you'll find he's been a victim of much more than love over the years. Now in his mid 60s, his recording career only really began in earnest 10 years ago. Criminal, really... But the best talent always gets recognised eventually, and Daptone are doing him some serious fast-track justice. Highlights include the country-inspired strumming and harmonies on the album title track, the belting horn-swing of "You Put The Flame On It", the sadder trumpet, alto sax and Hammon cannon melody on "Dusty Blues" and the blend of slamming northern soul style drums and head-bending psychedelia of "Confusion". Don't be a victim: feel the love today.

Review: There have been plenty of retrospectives on the absolutely essential work of Sun Ra and his Arkestra over the years, but trust Strut to go that bit deeper when they elected to focus on the Sun God himself. As the extensive title suggests, this collection places the focus on proceedings in the hands of Marshall Allen, the longest serving member of the Arkestra and current band leader. The results mean In The Orbit Of Ra feels a whole lot more personal and indepth, with over 25 years worth of Sun Ra-lead music documented. It's all been fully remastered from the original tapes and is pretty much the most conclusive introduction to the work of this pioneer one could hope for. In addition to the 13 track double vinyl set, this release also includes the double CD edition which includes a further 7 Ra gems!

  1. The Rotating Assembly - "Seasons Of My Life" (feat Billy Lo)
  2. Green Pickles - "Feedback" (feat Billy Lo & M Pittman)
Review: Sound Signature kick off the new year with a pleasing reissue of some smoky soul from Theo Parrish's outlet for his most jazzy tendencies. On "Seasons Of My Life" Billy Lo croons over a muted trumpet while a surprisingly rough stomp gets hammered out of a live kit. It's a dreamy, sunkissed jam with all the loose, free-flowing elements you would expect from something with Parrish's stamp on it. Marcellus Pittman helps out on "Feedback", as a sparser, meandering groove does the nasty with some restrained keys. For that Detroit beatdown flavour away from the dancefloor, this is as good as it gets.

Review: Nohelani Cypriano's 1979 debut album, Nohelani, has become something of an in-demand item since Athens of the North reissued two of the tracks last year. Here, it gets a handy reissue, so those without the desire to dig deep can revel in its' curiously unique mix of styles. Cypriano's Hawaiian heritage is represented by the strange sound of pedal steel on a number of tracks, which also feature easy listening, disco, boogie, soul and jazz-funk influences. It's a bizarre but entertaining melting pot of influences, and one that happily steers clear of kitsch territory thanks to the high quality of its' most notable moments, in particular "Lihue", "Island Boy" and the deliciously camp "South Sea Island Magic".

Review: Austrian reissue merchants PMG come through with their second archival gem of the week, honing in on the mid to late '70s work of Libyan musician Ahmed Fakroun. This self-titled album is a must for vinyl-fancying Fakroun completists as it features all the tracks from his 1974 debut, Awedny, which has never before featured in this format. Complementing those ten tracks, PMG have also licensed two gems from the era - the 7" single "Auidny" he released in 1974 and "Nisyan" which came out some three years later. Fakroun's clear mastery of applying the flourishes of Western disco and pop to the traditional rai folk music of the Arabic region is apparent here on some of his earliest recordings. Delightful stuff.

Review: New Zealand funk and reggae troupe Fat Freddy's Drop call on the man Theo Parrish to rework "Mother Mother" from last year's third LP Blackbird on the first of two planned remix 12" singles - watch out for the second featuring the handiwork of Cosmo, Yam Who and Ashley Beedle. In original form, "Mother Mother" was already quite a long track, clocking in at just under nine minutes and though this new rendition from the Sound Signature boss is not that much longer he does add his signature (sorry) twist to the track. There's also an instrumental on the B Side for those that aren't partial to Joe Dukie's distinctive tones but love the Parrish production.

Review: The first volume of Outro Tempo was a standout release in Music From Memory's immaculate catalogue when it landed in 2017. Dealing in intriguing folds of Brazilian electronic music, this second installment serves up yet another feast of lesser known talents spanning swooning synth pop and ethereal ambience and plenty more in between. Take an exotic thrill ride through the dense thickets of Low Key Hackers or bliss out to the meandering jazz funk experimentation of Jorge Degas and Marcelo Salazar - wherever you turn the breadth and quality of the sounds on offer are nothing short of mind-blowing. At 20 tracks deep, it's also astounding value for money.

Review: Thanks to the globe trotting "Trips" series in which they collaborate with local musicians in far-flung locations, Red Axes are clocking up plenty of air miles. Volume two in the series contains more exotic, cross-cultural treats, this time made in collaboration with Vietnamese musicians. They begin with the spacey dub disco shuffle of "Ho Chi Min", where ear-catching Vietnamese vocals and South East Asian string instruments ride a chunky groove, before stripping things back on the bass-heavy late night exoticism of "Hanoi". "Phu Quoc" sees them brilliantly chopping up, mangling and manipulating vocals and snaking solos over a druggy groove, while "Hue" is warm, deep, groovy and almost Balearic in its deliciously loved-up way.

Already a big hit with radio's premier close talker Gilles Peterson, Polite Strangers is described fairly accurately as oozing "jazz, lush orchestral experiments and downbeat, Detroit flavour house" by Rhythm Section and for anyone that's been to the affiliated party in a pool hall you'll know how well this kind of music goes down there. The sun laden beat down of final track "The Test Dream" is a particular gem!

In a nod to his cache and love of classic deep house, Riddick has coaxed a Mr Fingers remix out of Larry Heard resulting in a sublime take on "Believer" that would have gone down a treat at Broken Beat haven Co-Op back in the day. Instead of the original version of "Believer," the flip features another Riddick original from the DJ Kicks mix - his killer Nite Funk collaboration with fellow LA synthesizer enthusiast Nite Jewel.

Review: Perhaps a lurch into the direction of head-spinning psychedelic guitar-driven groove wasn't where fans of DJ Format expected him to go next, but this compilation is proof positive that this man will doggedly pursue the funkiest of sound to the ends of the earth and the very edge of sanity. Collecting together gems from all over the globe, including such far-flung quarters as Uruguay and Yugoslavia, he creates a dizzying and ecstatically fuzzed-out melange that has no problem with jumping off the audial deep end in the pursuit of oblivion and ecstasy. Both a heady triumph and a cleansing experience for the third eye.

Review: Described in the accompanying press release as "the halfway point between Bollywood and Balearic", Rupa Biswas' 1982 debut "Disco Jazz" has long been a favourite of dusty-fingered diggers with a healthy bank balance and a penchant for the quirky. All four tracks are cheery, charming and superior to many "Bollywood disco" records produced in the same period. The sunny disco-boogie of "Moja Bhari Moja" is followed on side A by the delightfully eccentric, bass-powered AOR-disco/funk-rock fusion of "East West Shuffle" and the effortlessly Balearic cheeriness of "Aaj Shanibar". Best of all, though, is the exotic and intoxicating flipside cut "Ayee Morshume Be-Reham Duniya" which expertly joins the dots between cosmic rock and Balearic disco grooves for 16 spellbinding minutes.

  10. Sir Victor Uwaifo & His Melody Maestroes - "Jungle Beat (Mutaba)" (3:05)
Review: Jump 'N' Funk started life as a small event in New York, organized by Rich Medina in order to pay tribute to the genius of Fela Kuti. Since then, parties have been held across the world, with Medina and guests showcasing music by, or inspired by, the Nigerian Afrobeat legend. This debut Jump N Funk compilation follows a similar formula, delivering both purist Afrobeat cuts (see Fela's punchy "Stalemate", and "Na Oil" by son Seun and his band, Egypt 80), and tracks in other styles that draw heavily on the style. Highlights in the latter category include the hazy Afro hip-hop of Aquil, a tasty Afro-house dub of River Ocean's cover of Timmy Thomas' classic "Why Can't We Live Together", and the lazy, sun-kissed glory of Kutiman's "Bango Fields".

Review: Beating Heart has shared the late Hugh Tracey's archive at the International Library of African Music (ILAM) with contemporary producers and keeping in line with Tracey's vision, all proceeds will be used to assist people in the areas where the music was originally recorded. This time, Warp Records and all round UK electronica legend Luke Vibert gives us the delightful oddball groove that is "Africable", Italian DJ Clap! Clap! Gives us the African polyrhythms via Detroit high-tech soul on "Kulira" while Los Angeles duo With You give us the sublime "No Resistance". Each 1500 albums sold will feed a school of 500 forever! Support a great cause and feed your ears with some wonderful music while you're at it.

  11. Eunice Mokus Arimoku - "Ariro" (8:02)
Review: Between 1980 and '84, Duomo Sounds Ltd released some of the most inspired disco and boogie to come from Nigeria. This fine compilation from Odion tells the story of the label via a selection of the Humphrey Aniakor-founded imprint's finest moments. Although fuzzier and more lo-fi than the American and European records that inspired them, with the distinctive grooves of Afro-beat and Afro-funk never far away, the vast majority of these tracks are every bit as weighty and floor-friendly. Highlights include Mike Umoh's immaculate "Shake Your Body", the Moog-laden Christy Ogbah slow jam "Aimiugwah", the Clavinet-happy bounce of Bindiga's "Perfect Disco Machine" and the celebratory silliness of Johnny O's festive "Bazz Xmas Eve".

Review: Back in 1976, Retta Young - previously a member of 60s soul group The Superbs - recorded and released her sole debut album, Young & Restless. For some time, that set has been in-demand amongst soul and disco collectors, with pristine copies changing hands for hundreds online. Happily, Expansions have put together this licensed reissue. There's much to enjoy throughout, from the simmering strings and heart-aching vocals of slow jam "Now or Never", to the ultra-sweet bliss of "We're So in Love", via the Philadelphia International style brilliance of "My Love is on His Way" and emotion-rich "Let's Make Up For Lost Time".

  1. Batazo Batero (5:04)
  2. Bolillo, Baqueta Y Tombo (5:06)
Review: Two delicious freeform rhythm jams from the heart of Bogota; Los Propios Bateros (AKA drummer and percussionist Pedro Ojeda) is the result of a deep documentary project that plots the rhythmic thread through the Americas as a cast of Columbian's next generation musicians explore the national legacy of descraga and pornpo across two warm and seductive improvisations; "Batazo Batero" swoons with a little light jazz in its step while "Bolillo, Baqueta Y Tombo" is more of a loose funk riff that writhes in and out of the tight staccato trumpet riff. Sublime as always from Names You Can Trust.

Review: London's contemporary jazz scene is so strong right now that there's not a week that passes without the release of a killer new album from one of its leading protagonists. The latest comes from Ezra Collective, which finally delivers its' debut album following a string of inspired live performances and a handful of must-have singles. Kicking off with a breezy chunk of hip-hop-jazz, "You Can't Steal My Joy" sees the hyped five-piece confidently bounce between intense, spiraling epics ("Why You Mad?"), reggae-influenced aural sunshine ("Red Whine"), polyrhythmic Afro-jazz ("Quest For Coin"), bespoke soul (Jorja Smith hook-up "Reason In Disguise"), live boom-bap hip-hop (Loyle Carner collaboration "What Am I To Do"), bustling Afro-Cuban jazz ("Chris & Jane"), picturesque piano pieces ("Philosopher II") and much more besides. As debuts go, it's mighty impressive.

Review: Capturing the essence and feels of the long-standing event he runs in his Swiss hometown of Lausanne, veteran digger and selector Attias presents a brand new compendium of sweet compositions that sum up he's at creatively and spiritually. Gems on gems on gems: highlights that we guarantee will appeal to your good tastes and dancefloor include the hypnotic vibraphone wash of Cro-Magnon's "Midnight Magic", the slept-on jittering funk of Tatham, Mensah, Lord & Ranks's "Cascade" and Material and Nona Hendrix's ludicrously funky, ultimately sleazy slinker "Over & Over". We suspect you'll be playing this record over and over, too...
