Review: German funk act The Poets Of Rhythm have more than left their mark on a scene that wasn't so popular back in their heyday. They have got plenty of great albums to explore and several superb singles, of which this is one. 'Practice What You Preach' is a track from their debut album released on Soulciety in 1993. Despite a hiatus from albums until their return with a Ninja Tune LP in 2001, the band remained active in the 7"s circuit. Surprisingly, a part two to the same track exists, serving as an instrumental version of the original 1993 release. On the B-side, a fresh funk track, previously released under the alias Mighty Continentals, features Bo Baral delivering a rare solo guitar performance alongside ambiguous lyrical content.

Review: Six Nine Records welcomes honey-voiced soul man Terrill Paul to the label for the first time, via a two-track 45 written and produced by the prolific Stone Paxton. The cut for dancefloor plays is undoubtedly A-side 'This Time', a pleasingly nostalgic nod to turn of the 80s disco-soul whose grooves, lyrics and instrumentation recall the celebratory brilliance of Earth, Wind and Fire. Just like that band's best moments, 'This Time' boasts a superb lead vocal and a genuinely catchy chorus. Over on the flip, 'Heaven Sent' is a delightfully loved-up slow jam that blurs the boundaries between contemporary soul, r&b and glossy mid-80s productions.

It found him working with his trusty New Power Generation and features the 'damn near 10 min' mix of the song 'Gett Off' which is sure to fire up any dancefloor. It was originally a single - also served up as a one-sider - to promote Prince's new band with a cover that boldly declared that "Nothing can stop Prince and the New Power Generation" and was only issued on 1500 copies, so this is a great treat for fans to own all these years later.

Review: During the latter stages of the "Philly Soul" era, New York remixer Tom Moulton delivered a string of inspired, DJ friendly reworks for the Philadelphia International label. For proof, check this fine selection of classic Moulton mixes for the storied imprint. Check first his version of Archie Bell and the Drells' "Where Will You Go When The Party's Over", which he brilliantly teases out and increases in intensity over nine spellbinding minutes. The funkier flex of People's Choice's "Jam, Jam, Jam (All Night Long)" is a sweaty, low-down treat, while the Teddy Pendergrass rework is a soaring disco classic in the Philly Soul style. Best of all, though, is the string-drenched disco celebration that is his mix of Lou Rawls' "See You When I Git There".

Review: A series of Marc Moulin releases are on the way right now courtesy of various reissue projects and this one is pressed up on nice orange vinyl. The Belgian beatmaker is known for downtempo grooves but shows a different side here with two tracks alongside his band, later known as Placebo but here still known as Kiosk. 'Mona Call' is a busy and jazzy cut with dancing drums. 'Waterproof' arrives on the flip carries on in the same vein, with big horns bursting though the arrangement. These are two of the very many crucial tunes in the Moulin catalogue.

Review: Carolynn Porter is a name you might not know but that's something of a crime as she is one of the great unsung stars of the early Philly soul era. She grew up around a noted producer of the time, Manny Campbell, and was a vocalist in his band in the mid to late 60s alongside jazz legends John 'Papa' DeFrancesco and Grover Washington Jr. Although she never officially recorded, anything she gigged for years. The music on this new 7" was captured from the original reel tapes that are now stored at the University of Pennsylvania.

Review: The Dig This Way label outta Italy continues to build a fine head of steam with its stomping second disco release. 'Spell Bound' comes from PSK, and is taken from their one and only album Disco Season back in 1980. It was the opening track on that album, written by Austine Rigar and Jones Coakly, and is a bright, joyful groove. The big vocals bring exotic international flavours over the funky bass work, trilling drums and afro-tinged rhythms. ON the flip is another tune from that album, 'Revolution (Work Hard In Your Life)' that is all pixelated synth leads, afro-drum patterns and even a hint of ska swagger.

Review: Invisible City Editions hows better than most how to dig for classic old treasures. They have made plenty of stars and big tues over the course of the last 17 such relates and this 18th is another gem. Shawn Pittiman's 'Dreams' has tinny but heartfelt 80s drum work. The kicks stagger beneath stepping synth sequences, lush strings and a gorgeous, echoing female vocal. After a subtle tweaked remix version 'I'm Losing Control' is an all out, crashing 80s port house cut with more rugged synth work and another fine vocal. The extended Bass-ment club mix makes it a deeper, more hypnotic groove.

Review: There's not much to go on when it comes this latest release on trusted soul and funk outpost Epsilon. Whoever Pals & Gal were, their sound is rooted in the classic era of 70s soul even if the track was completed bang on the turn of the decade in 1980. There's a big band arrangement powering 'Lil' Bit Different' which was put together by Ron Foster, and there's as much focus on holding down the groove as different instruments coming to the fore to do their thing. The lyrics tell it straight - this is just a little bit different.

As a result they are now familiar to many and their track 'Window Shopping' emerged from an almost-lost master tape. Review: Latest in the Italian soundtrack reissues crop comes this pair of tracks from the soundtrack of Un Uomo Dalla Pelle Dura (The Boxer), a 1972 film directed by Franco Prosperi and starring Robert Blake and Catherine Spaak. Composed by Carlo Pes - who was also the guitarist of the infamous quartet I Marc 4, who probably played on this session as well - 'The Riff' and 'Bossa Party' are are light-footed, drum-led funk number and a piano-led supernova respectively. Review: DC's Rouser label was a rather short lived imprint but the three acclaimed singes it released were incredibly spacial. Arguably the best of the trio was from The Past - Present, And The Future who expertly moved between beautiful and ghostly sounds. Their work demonstrating a timeless understanding of love and longing and always came steeped in plenty of emotion. The two tunes here on this fresh 7" showcase that in heart rending fashion. 'If I Could Live For Eternity' in particular is an indelible sounding song.

Review: Vocal trio The Petersons hailed from Waycross and took their name from Kenneth Peterson, the band leader, founder, drummer and vocalist who worked with keys man Salem Chatman and vocalist and bassist Johnny Members. They performed all up and down the East Coast of America and answered an advert they saw in Philadelphia in 1973 which led them to sign for Omega Sound, a small independent recording company formed by Frank Fioravanti. They recorded the tunes presented here but didn't make much noise at the time, though listening back now it's hard to see why.

Review: Freestyle delivers a gem from 1987 here with Purely Fizzycal's UK street soul sizzler 'Make A Move' , which was first released on their Pure Impact Productions label. Trish Langley of North London and Ash Kamat of South London first crossed paths in the mid-80s and came together over music with Kamat's programming and production inspired by London pirate radio sound of the time and and US influences like Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis also colouring their sound. Langley's vocals, shaped by her parents' reggae collection and brother's taste for artists like Brothers Johnson, Maze, and Janet Kay, merged with Kamat's raw drum machine sounds in perfect easy as heard here with this irresistible 12".

Review: Two previously unreleased jazz gems from Finnish flutist and saxophonist Esa Pethman, who's visit to Belgium is forever chronicled on this limited 7" vinyl. 'The Flame' is an incredible alto flute composition described in the liner notes by Mikko Mattlar as a 'true modern Fenno-Jazz evergreen', featuring Jean Fannis on piano and a particularly stellar drum performance from Al Jones. 'Like Steel' showcases Pethman in a completely different light on tenor sax, with an incredible trumpeter found in Francesco Santucci. Review: We really have a soft spot for the Four Flies late out of Italy. Their mix of world, Latin, library, jazz and plenty of other cultured in-between sounds always brings a smile to our face and dancers to our dance floors. This new 7" takes the form of a second single to be taken from Psyche's (aka Naples collective Marcello Giannini, Andrea De Fazio and Paolo Petrella) debut long player which is due in May. It's a compelling cut that offers a rich exploration of rhythm and the movements of an imaginary ritual dance. Synths and drums, guitar and bass and percussion all interplay delightfully.

Review: After a string of sought-after releases on labels like Barefoot Beats, Cocada Music, Bongo Synth and Too Slow To Disco, Bernardo Pinheiro brings his seasoned production skills to Onda Boa. It's nothing short of miraculous that this release is considered an effort in 'production' over composition, as these tracks could fool anyone into thinking they were recorded by a live band. That's part of the art, though: with Pinheiro described as a "man at home working in a myriad of styles", we truly do have a jazzdance production master on our hands, and this time he covers from scratch Marcos Valle and Azymuth's classic 'Virabrequim'. On the B, there's also an organic broken beat remix by fellow producer Voilaaa, who demonstrates an equal taste for retraining a live feel in their productions.

Rising star Alan Dixon delivers a lightly tooled-up, all-action revision of Gyedu Bley Amadou's tropical disco classic 'Highlife', before Barcelona-based John Talabot and Pional re-frame Ekambi Brilliant's 'Afrika Afrika' as a kind of Afro-post-punk/dub disco mash-up. Review: This Precisions (Philly Group) were a different group to the Detroit Precisions.These two tracks come from when they were working with Philadelphia producer Marty Bryant. We can imagine that some Northern Soul DJs tracked down copies of the scarce original pressing of this fine 7" for B-side "My Sense of Direction (Is Blown)", a heartfelt soul shuffler with serious dancefloor chops. Arguably even better, though, is A-side "Take a Closer Look", a slower, simmering chunk of doo-wop influenced goodness that's as heartbreaking as it is sublime.

It features a pair of tracks from Steve Parks, who looks as cool as can be on the much loved cover. This is the first time the lead single has ever been put on its own 7" after first coming on his 1981 album. That is now mega-rare and a high value collector's item and surely this one will be too, soon enough. The mastering is high class, allowing the free flowing jazz funk goodness to really shine. On the reverse is a more intimate late-night romancer. What a pair of tunes.
