Review: Having landed his debut album Bosq Y Orchestra De Madera on Ubiquity Records back in 2013, Bosq will be returning with his second long player on the Californian label later this year. Take Over is the second 12" laid down as a precursor of what Bosq has up his sleeve and the Boston-based Whisky Baron is certainly on good form. Known for his towering vocal contributions to Fela's Egypt 80, Benin-born / Nigerian-raised singer Kaleta once again lines a Bosq production in lead cut "Take Over", and it might just be their heaviest collaboration yet! The Less Patient edit adds a bit of dancefloor weight to the track. Flip for the dense, delay heavy afrobeat burner "Bounce And Pull Up" which features some devilish horns from Evan Laflamme.

Review: We're always stoked to hear a new 12" from K15. The London beat maker has plenty of tricks in his box, from lush deep house to jazzed-out synth music, collaborative projects that fuse the two and plenty more. Here the deep thinking producer layers up cosmic synth work with jostling broken beats and far-sighted pads that speak to Detroit. That's the case on the heady A-side 'Demo of Heart' at least, while things get more funk and energetic on 'Tomorrow's Promise,' a perfect coming together of London beats, sun-worshipping synths and jazz invention.

The thoughtful London-based beat smith turns up here on 200 Lack, the acclaimed also London-based outlet for broken beats. Review: Son of Todd Osborn (Soundmurderer/Ghostly) Kaito Ian makes a hugely impressing first outing on the Galaxy Sound Co label with a series of lo-fi hip-hop beat-strumentals that cannot fail to get your head nodding. He is a dedicated music lover and skater with a deep knowledge of his craft and that shows here with some refined sounds starting with the soul drenched 'Revert', then on to the warped angelic vocal samples of 'Sequoia' and the percussive jumbled and scratching of 'Trek'. 'Wait Up' is another excellently blissed out joint and 'Sloan' is a sunny, laid back, lazy vibe to close down a superb EP.

Review: The Polyversal Souls are renowned for the strength of their collaborative singles, which to date have featured all manner of legends and rising stars from the underground African music scene. This time around, the German-Ghanaian band provides high-grade backing for guest vocalist Frank Karikari, son of legendary Highlife musician Ralph Karikari. The A-side medley of "Siakwaa/Nana Agyei" is particularly good, with Karikari's confident lead vocal rising above shuffling, soft-focus drums and ear-catching juju guitars. Flipside cut "Odo Agye Gye Me" is great, too, offering a slightly more upbeat and undeniably percussive fusion of highlife/Afrobeat fusion.

Review: While many Northern soul bits might deal with subject matters that lie on the more generic end of the spectrum, Ty Karim's 'Lighten Up Baby' almost certainly does not fall into that category. Lyrically concerning a love interest who has grown cynical of the reality of the LA songstress' affections, Karim here insists the subject "consider her heart" and the sincerity with which she chose her favourite person. So lighten up, and allow the A to play through all the way, before flipping this one over to the B, where the bright spark is rather sadly put out. 'All At Once' dashes our hopes with a bluesy stepper that regales the story of said lover leaving Karim for another. Don't let the sadness deter you though, as both are bangers!

Review: Expansions' latest essential reissue takes us back to 1980 and the much sought after seven-inch edition of singer Ty Karim's collaboration with lesser-known soul man George Griffin. "Keep On Doin' Whatcha' Doin'" was written and produced by Karim's other half Kent Harris and, like the original seven inch, appears here in two parts. The glorious A-side version is a lolloping chunk of disco-era sweet soul rich in soaring orchestration, fluttering flutes and Marvin Gaye/Tammi Tyrell style duet vocals from Karim and Griffin. Part two focuses more on the killer groove and the duo's impassioned improvised vocalizations, with a variety of tasty solos helping to whip things into a mid-tempo dancefloor frenzy.

Review: Kaymany & Asestar hail from Rome, a city where many musicians spend most of their days producing sounds for the television industry and even shopping malls. That's part of the reason the country has such a reparation for great jazz-funk sounds and now adding to that cannon are Kaymany & Asestar. 'Effimera' is glossy and feel good disco with retro future chords, while 'Digressione' has a Bob James style energy to it with its high speed funky bass and incidental chords. 'Capao' closes in Latin fashion with manic keys and more plucked and funky bass slaps making you shake every limb.

Review: Sonar Kolletkiv has dug deep for this one and got the rights to reissue Shirley Turner's 1965 recording 'I Wish You A World Of Happiness. ' It its one of those set soul jams that has been an evergreen fav and crate digger's delight thanks to its Northern soul elegance, controlled but emotive vocals and snappy drums. The KBCS is a union of musicians who all hail from Hamburg, Germany. They have their own unique styles but complement one another perfectly on their cover version on the A-side. They bring their own lush soul vibes and more contemporary drums to a version that will get floors going, no doubt.

Review: Funk, soul and jazz-funk reissue specialists Dynamite Cuts are particularly good at offering up seven-inch singles featuring album tracks that have never previously appeared on "45". They're at it again here, delivering a killer seven-inch featuring the much-sampled two-part track that bookends K.C & The Sunshine Band's self-titled, 1975 sophomore LP. "Let It Go (Part 1)" is a low-down Miami funk treat featuring a hot-to-trot-mix of bustling drums, heavy percussion breaks, rousing vocals, fiery (and familiar) horn riffs and impassioned lead vocals. The slightly shorter "part two" mix is an even heavier, vocal-free take that deftly showcases the quality of the band's hip-shaking, rabble-rousing instrumentation.

It found the New York legend offering up six 7"s carrying iconic breaks used in seminal hip hop movie Wild Style. Well now you can cop something from that highly sought after box and enjoy it for yourself as the first disc gets its own individual release. On the A side we've got the low slung bass and dusty groove of 'Down By Law', and on the flip it's 'Subway Beat' with a sweet low funk groove. Flipping over to the B-side, 'Komet Ride' kicks up the tempo with even more vigorous drumming and exhilarating organ solos. Review: It's always a good day when a new Burning Soul 7" drops in our laps and this new one is another standout that comes in very limited quantities on either black or white vinyl. It's the great work of Kidding and opens with 'Seriously' which is a Hammond-organ laced and flame hot funk workout with low-slung bass and lots of great grit riffs. The flipside picks up the pace with 'Komet Ride' which has even more energetic drums and even more mad finger action on the organ. Frenetic funk of the highest order.

Review: First issued on Soul Kitchen way back in 1971, the two tracks featured on this single are shrouded in mystery. Both were recorded live - hence the grittiness of the sound - and feature what sound like preachers-turned-singers Solomon and Moses doing their thing over righteous funk and soul backing tracks which were rumoured to have been provided by the Ebony Rhythm Band. A-side 'He's Forever (Amen)' is a largely beat-free soul-jazz soundscape, onto which tweaked bible verses are sung and spoken. It's unusual but excellent all told. Flipside 'He's Coming' is the pick for dancefloor plays. It's a righteous, impassioned rendition of a gospel soul classic in the raucous Midwest funk style. Testify!

Review: Emotional Rescue closes out another brilliant year with one final hot drop. This sorting 7" Safari by King Sporty was the artist's first ever single back in 1976. It comes after the label has served up plenty of reissues of the man known as Noel Wiliam's tackle but this one might be the best. It's from his album Deep Reggae Roots and is nice tropical excursion with steamy hits, wooden percussive sounds and funky bass over a low-slung groove and chanting vocals. This one is backed with a special disco mix by Lexx that reworks the tune for more lively moments.

Appearing shortly after the success of the band's only album, Extra Funky, Do You Wanna Dance? pointed the way forward, moving further from Disco and closer to the rising electro-boogie sounds that were sweeping the dance floors. The confident up / jump electro drum programming, slap bass and trademark Sporty guitar chops are propelled by a monster swamp inducing synth arpeggio that sings the funk electric, while hip-hop-shout-outs ride the rhythm. If the vocals are too much for some, then the original Instrumental (dub) is also included for those just wanting that infectious groove.

Review: Soundway brings the West Indian funk from 1977 on the new and raw double-sider. King Wellington's 'Shango' goes first and is a tune taken from his Sooner Or Later album. It now finally makes it onto 45rom for the first time and is inspired by the ritual from which it takes its name with roots in Yoruba culture and hints of Calypso music all powered by hypnotic bass with Wellington's signature vocal adding to this unique Caribbean blend. Review: There is some class edit and mash up business going on here with the latest one from the Disco Bits crew. The 45 takes the form of of classic cuts reworked with an all new and contemporary edge with the dancefloor very much in mind. First up, a Patti Job classic gets taken apart and rebuilt with new vocals and a more stepping beat. The Chopper's 'People Hold On' is a more smoochy sound with classic vocal refrains singing out and twanging guitar riffs powering along a groove that is suited for everything from weddings to late night shenanigans.

Review: Greek bass player Petros Klampanis has his 'Chroma' tune reworked by tow contemporary talents here on the Visions Inc label. Jon Dixon gets fist with a nice rough edged but punchy rework built on bulky and rickety beats. The lush chords are draped over the top to bring melancholic feels and are sure to work the floor into a lather. The Alex Attias edit is more manic, with wild jazz keys, tumbling drums that feel like they may collapse at any moment and a symphony of chords that rise out through them to take you into the next dimension.

Review: James Knight & The Butlers originally released 'Baby Please Pretty Please' and 'Space Guitar' back in 1972 and it is a cult classic soul 7" that now gets reissued via Topic Drift Music. This is as gritty and hard edged as soul gets with a southern twist - it's a sound that peaked at this time just before the disco invasion. 'Baby Please Pretty Please' is deep cut with crisp drums and a lo-fi feel under the buttery vocal harmonies and warm chords. 'Space Guitar is just that - a psyched-out sound with big sleazy riffs and filthy bass.

Review: Kiko jean & The Tonics is a four-piece soul, r&b and rock n blues band based in Barcelona. Their funk sounds come steeped in classic 60s references as highlighted by this new 7" on Buenritmo. 'Sick & Tired' has nice elastic rhythms with warming Hammond organ chords and dancing keys all forming a foundation for the soulful vocals. On the flip side, 'Let Me Be Free' gets much slower and more sentimental with epic guitar solos ringing out. The Hammond chords are more muted but the vocals grow even more impassioned.
