Feel Like Making Love

Kay Young - "Feel Like Making Love" (4:20)
Venna & Marco - "Where Are We Going?" (3:43)
Review: Hip-hop heads love nothing more than classic Blue Note material getting a modern fix up. And that's what we have here as Kay Young and Venna and Marco Bernardis join forces to work their magic on Marlena Shaw's 'Feel Like Making Love' and Donald Byrd's 'Where Are We Going?' This limited 7" is a taster from the 16-track compilation Blue Note: Reimagined II. It's packed with the neo-soul, r&B and hip hop scenes finest contemporary talents adding new magic to the still standout original source material. Like volume one, it's an absolute must-have, as is this 45rpm.

Review: Back in 2016, legendary Afrobeat drummer Tony Allen approached techno pioneer Jeff Mills with the idea of working together. A series of live gigs and off-the-radar studio sessions followed, with the first fruits of their joint efforts finally appearing on this must-have 10". As you'd expect, the duo's collaborative work combines Allen's traditional Nigerian polyrhythms, traditional Afrobeat instrumentation, and the far-sighted, sci-fi inspired electronic futurism that has always marked out Mills' work. The result is a quartet of cuts that could arguably be described as retro-futurist Afro-tech - all delay-laden beats, basslines and organs subtly sparring with gentle acid lines, Motor City electronics, beguiling deep space textures and shimmering, 31st century motifs. It's arguably Allen's stylistic contributions that dominate, but that's no bad thing.

Review: Blue Note Re:imagined finds Decca and Blue Note jin their immeasurably forces for a new series of releases that rework classics from both back catalogues. They are often collisions of old and new talents and form a bridge between jazz generations. This latest offering kicks off with Steam Down's version of Wayne Shorter's "Etcetera" (Ft. Afronaut Zu) and Yazmin Lacey's version of Dodo Greene's - "I'll Never Stop Loving You." Both make for lush, involving listening and mark another fine entry in this series.

Review: Blue Note Re:imagined is a carefully curated collection of brand-new covers of classic material from the legendary label as served up by a selection of the UK scene's most exciting young talents including Ezra Collective, Nubya Garcia and Brit Award-winning Jorja Smith. For this latest 7" it's Jordan Rakei, who actually hails from Aus, but let's not get mad about that because the super smooth soul singer reaches new heights on the free flowing, heart opening 'Wind Parade'. Jazz pianist Alfa Mist takes care of the flip with a suitably cosmic exploration on 'Galaxy' that pairs live, busy drums and soaring synths with rich chords.

Before we hear what is sure to be a contemporary great, we get treated to a couple of singles from it on this tidy 45 rpm. Review: Blue Note first delivered Horace Silver's Silver Serenade in 1964, adding yet once more to their precious collection of sonorous soul jazz metals. With Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Junior Cook on tenor saxophone, Gene Taylor on bass, and Roy Brooks on drums, the natural scarcity of this serenade is a cultivated one, not spooned; Silver's naturalistic trumpet sounds carpal and easy, dancing brightly against clear, impeccably recorded contrapuntal movements by Brooks and Taylor.

Review: Speak Like A Child by Herbie Hancock is a groundbreaking album that defies categorization, blending elements of post-bop, modal jazz, and funk into a cohesive and forward-thinking sound only to be slotted into a wide spanning genre like Jazz-Fusion. The title track, 'Speak Like A Child', is a standout composition that highlights Hancock's signature piano playing, characterized by its lyrical melodies and inventive harmonies. The album features intricate arrangements and complex rhythms, with each track offering a unique sonic journey for the listener. Hancock's ability to push the boundaries of traditional jazz while maintaining a deep respect for the genre's roots is clear throughout the album. 'Speak Like A Child' remains a landmark recording in Hancock's discography, cementing his status as one of the most influential figures in modern jazz.

Review: Hot on the heels of Blue Note's 2024 lineup announcement of their esteemed Tone Poet series - which reissues classic jazz albums for a contemporary audience hungry for audiophile quality editions - comes this eagerly-awaited new version of Anthony Williams' Life Time. A five-piece north star of free jazz and debut record by the expansive drummer, the album held a crucial repute throughout Williams' career as the inspirational namesake of his later band with John McLaughlin, the Tony Williams Lifetime Band. This one, however, pre-empts this movement and instead hears contributions from such greats as Richard Davis, Herbie Hancock and Ron Carter, riding high on the wave of divine-genius-by-proxy after already having performed with Miles Davis at the age of 18. Blast back to 1964 with this ideal free jazz intro.

Released originally in 1966, the record showcases Hutcherson's mastery of the vibraphone and how he effortlessly weaves intricate melodies with a vibrant rhythmic pulse. Backed by a stellar ensemble including the one and only Herbie Hancock, Hutcherson crafts a sonic landscape that is both sophisticated and accessible. The album combines Frisell's trio with the Brussels Philharmonic and the Umbria Jazz Orchestra, resulting in a dynamic interplay between jazz intimacy and orchestral grandeur. Gibbs' masterful orchestrations, inspired by Gil Evans and cinematic scores, seamlessly enhance the trio's telepathic rapport. Frisell's signature shimmering sound blends effortlessly with strings and brass, creating a rich and expressive tapestry. Notably, the collaboration highlights the deep connection between Frisell and Gibbs, a legendary innovator in jazz arranging. Gibbs' intuitive writing draws out the trio's spontaneity and pushes them into uncharted territory. Next to get the special treatment it deserves is Herbie Hancock's 1965 classic Maiden Voyage, which is some of the most evocative jazz to have ever been recorded. Net to Hancock, the players were all either present or past members of Miles Davis' quintet, so made for a heavy line-up. Hancock's impressionistic style is here for all to hear with the sublime compositions of 'Dolphin's Dance' and 'Maiden Voyage' and more tumultuous sounds of 'The Eye Of The Hurricane' some of the highlights.

The latest in their Classic Editions comes by way of Donald Byrd, whose timeless 1975 album Places And Spaces documents the trumpeter's fearless jazz-funk fusion era. This being Blue Note, you can expect only the best rendition of this orchestral jazz-funk suite that a vinyl pressing has to offer. This version is an all-analog remaster, by legendary cutting engineer Kevin Gray, from the original tapes. Review: Lee Morgan's Search For The Land is a soulful exploration of jazz that now gets reissued as part of this classic series son the iconic Blue Note. Released first in 1966, the record showcases Morgan's virtuosity as a trumpeter and composer. With a lineup featuring heavyweights like Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock, each track is a journey through intricate melodies and dynamic rhythms. From the exhilarating title track to the introspective 'Melancholee,' Morgan's next level improvisation and emotive phrasing shine throughout. The album's rich textures, buoyant grooves, and evocative solos make it an evergreen gem in the jazz canon and one that captures the essence of Morgan's musical vision with unparalleled depth and allure.

Review: Charles Lloyd returns with his latest musical offering, The Sky Will Still Be There Tomorrow, a majestic double LP of new studio recordings from the legendary saxophonist. Despite this being Lloyd's eleventh album for Blue Note, it still makes for a sudden comeback, as it is the first new set of sessions to appear since 2017's twin releases, 'Vanished Garden' and 'Tone Poem'. On The Sky Will Still Be There Tomorrow, Lloyd proffers a muted, tender sound, abiding by emotive progressions backed up by homespun lower bout hits and natural piano playing. Lloyd hardly needs to lift a finger to glean the reams of emotion that swell from his instrument.

Review: Jazz trumpet legend Donald Byrd has one of those seemingly endless discography that takes in solo and group albums and is full of treasure that is well worth exploring no matter your particularly stylistic penchant. 1963's A New Perspective is a landmark album that brings gospel and soul elements into his usual jazz sound. It features a stellar lineup including Herbie Hancock and Hank Mobley and the centerpiece is the iconic 'Cristo Redentor,' a soulful composition that showcases Byrd's lyrical trumpet playing. With its fusion of genres, the album broke new ground and paved the way for future jazz explorations that Pitchfork have said is one of the best albums of the 1960s. Byrd's innovative approach and the ensemble's tight chemistry make that so.

Review: Here's a great example of a simple idea, brilliantly executed. It sees artists from the UK's contemporary musical underground - most, though not all, with roots in jazz - re-make tracks from the Blue Note catalogue in their own personal style. The result is a series of sublime and sometimes surprising covers, with highlights including Jorja Smith's deliciously bluesy and soulful nu-jazz take on St Germain's 'Rose Rouge', a sumptuous interpretation of Donald Byrd's smooth jazz-funk classic 'Wind Parade' courtesy of Jordan Rakei, Skinny Pelembe's Afro-tinged cosmic jazz version of the Sam Rivers Sextet's 'Illusion', a spacey, ultra-deep re-imagining of Eddie Henderson's 'Galaxy' by Alfa Mist and an incredible, classic-sounding recording of Dinah Washington favourite 'I'll Never Stop Loving You' by Yazmin Lacey.

Review: American jazz tenor saxophonist Dexter Gordon was one of the most influential early bebop musicians alongside the likes of Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker. His 1962 album Go on Blue Note was not actually recorded in a club, but in a fashion in the studio that replicated that informal environment. The legendary Rudy Van Gelder oversaw proceedings at his Van Gelder Studio and had Sonny Clark on piano, Butch Warren on Bass and Billy Higgins on drums. Next to tunes Dexter wrote himself are covers of Cole Porter's 'Love For Sale' amongst other highlights.

Review: Trios: Ocean is the second of three LPs in the trio album, Trio of Trios, in which the esteemed saxophonist and winds master Charles Lloyd trinitizes to no end. Jokes aside, he is fittingly joined by two other musicians - Gerald Clayton on piano, and guitarist Anthony Wilson - to produce a holy trifecta of jazz, and a distinctly watery, peaceful album meditating on the instrumental blues.

Review: Jazz pioneer and trumpet maestro Miles Davis was still in the early stages of his career when he played the three sessions that went on to comprise his Blue Note recordings in 1952, 1953, and 1954. A year later the final one, the seminal Blue Note label put the tracks together into two 12" albums as part of the 1500 series. They bare all the hallmarks of his early signature style from fiery bebop to beautiful ballads. Now the album comes in a mono, newly mastered version in the Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition and pressed on 180g vinyl. Standouts include 'How Deep Is The Ocean' and 'Dear Old Stockholm.'

The latest is Linnie Smith's Turning Point, a 1969 gem from the Dr that featured Smith on organ with Lee Morgan on trumpet, Julian Priester on trombone, Bennie Maupin on tenor saxophone, Melvin Sparks on guitar, and Idris Muhammad on drums. It's a record full of highlights such as a cover of 'See Saw' and the Beatles' 'Elanor Rigby' and plenty of other soulful originals.

Review: Guitar virtuoso Julian Lage's Speak To Me is a dynamic Blue Note album produced by Joe Henry. Arriving with 13 original tracks, Lage's compositions navigate a rich tapestry of American music genres, from gospel hymns to California singer-songwriter vibes and skronky jazz. The album's lead single '76' showcases a hard-driving blues essence, while 'As It Were' offers an atmospheric acoustic ballad. With contributions from Kris Davis, Patrick Warren, Levon Henry, and his trusted trio with bassist Jorge Roeder and drummer Dave King, Lage presents a multifaceted musical journey that captivates and enthrals in equal measure here.

Review: Donald Byrd's 1967 Slow Drag album came after the jazz legend had already recorded more than dozen albums for the seminal Blue Note label. He was joined for it by the drumming of Billy Higgins, alto saxophonist Sonny Red, pianist Cedar Walton, and bassist Walter Booker who all bring their own original compositions to the album. It's a pure hard bop session that marked the end of this chapter of Byrd's sound before he moved into fusion territory. Plenty of edgy groove-fess, ad-libbed vocals and boss flavours feature on what is one of many Byrd essentials.

Review: Benjamin Grosvenor's latest release, the second installment in his Decca contract, showcases his exceptional talent in works for piano and orchestra. Teaming up with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic under James Judd's baton, Grosvenor delivers captivating interpretations of Saint-Saens' Second Piano Concerto, Ravel's G Major Concerto, and Gershwin's iconic Rhapsody in Blue. While the combined choice of repertoire might seem unconventional, Grosvenor's artistry shines through, effortlessly transitioning between the diverse styles of each composer. His refined yet impassioned playing captivates listeners, whether navigating the lyrical passages of Ravel's concerto or infusing Gershwin's jazz-infused melodies with infectious vitality. The accompanying solo 'encores' further showcase Grosvenor's virtuosity, with standout performances of Saint-Saens' 'The Swan,' Ravel's Prelude in A Minor', and Gershwin's 'Love Walked In.' Each piece is delivered with exquisite precision and sensitivity, demonstrating Grosvenor's mastery across a range of repertoire.

Review: The Tone Poet series from Blue Note recently reissued legendary American guitarist Kenny Burrell's self-titled album, which was recorded in 1956 across several of New York's finest venues. Now it looks to his KB Blues album which came a year later and was his third session as a Blue Note label leader in the studio of legendary producer Rudy Van Gelder in New Jersey. His signature playing style comes to the fore with Horace Silver on piano, Hank Mobley on tenor saxophone, Doug Watkins on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums. The album features their take on Silver's 'Nica's Dream' and Burrell's 'Out for Blood' plus two different takes of Burrell's easy-going 'K.B Blues.' A really swinging set.

Review: Easterly Winds by Jack Wilson is a jazz classic that showcases the pianist's virtuosity and emotive depth. Released now as part of the Tone Poet Series, the album encapsulates Wilson's ability to blend intricate harmonies with soulful improvisation. The gentle yet evocative melodies, carried by Wilson's nimble fingers, capture the essence of cool jazz elegance. The interplay between piano, bass, and drums creates a contemplative atmosphere across the record that is reminiscent of a breezy journey guided by the titular easterly winds. As such, the record stands as a timeless example of his artistry and one that left a fine mark on the landscape of jazz.

Review: Blue Note reissue the drummer Art Blakey and his Jazz Messengers' time-honoured hard bop album Mosaic, often cited as among his best. From the titular opener to the seguing montage-worthy sequences of 'Arabia', 'Crisis' or 'Down Under', we're met with huge, extruding saxes and trombones, backed by Blakey's un-pin-downable drumming, evocative of huge towering New York skylines and crowd bustle; apparently, the album was so tightly performed it needed no alternate takes.

Review: Joe Pass was a legendary jazz guitarist who worked with many of the greats once his career hit its stride in the 1960s. Amongst his run of early classic albums is For Django, released in 1964 on Pacific Jazz and written as a tribute to another six-string legend, Django Reinhardt. Reissued as part of the Tone Poet series for Blue Note, this new pressing allows you to truly appreciate the wondrous sound Pass could conjure from his axe. The notes have a tender, mellifluous sound, but they can bite when they want to. The feeling Pass could elicit from his playing is why he's so revered, captured here when he was on the rise before the dizzy heights of working with Oscar Peterson, Ella Fitzgerald et al.

Review: The Tone Poet series is one in which Blue Note revisit some of its most classic albums and gives them some fresh attention. This vinyl edition of Stanley Turrentine's 1964 recording of Mr. Natural was produced by Joe Harley and has been mastered by Kevin Gray, who worked from original master tapes. It's pressed on 180g vinyl and comes in a lovely and deluxe gatefold tip-on jacket. It is a great record from the soulful tenor saxophonist and Blue Note stalwart with help from Lee Morgan on trumpet, Elvin Jones on drums, McCoy Tyner on piano, Bob Cranshaw on bass, and Ray Barretto on congas.

Review: American alto talent Jackie McLean released his Tippin The Scales album in 1979 on the legendary Blue Note. It was a post bob record that has rather remained under the radar in the years since, but will still cost you a pretty penny if you can find a second hand copy. The Tone Poet serve brings it back to the fore with a deluxe reissue package that allows the tunes to really shine. Jackie wrote two of them while Sonny Clark write three and one is a J. Latouche and V. Duke collaboration. The record was recorded on September 28, 1962 and is one of the more traditional records in McLean's oeuvre.

Review: Cecil Taylor released Unit Structures on the Blue Note label in 1966. It was his debut on the label and was quickly followed up by a second album in the same year with Conquistador! This one came with an essay by Taylor entitled Sound Structure of Subculture Becoming Major Breath/Naked Fire Gesture and is known for its high energy and atonal sounds. It sat well within the plasm of the free-jazz of the times but was at the sharp end with its ferocious paying styles. It is a record rich on colour and mathematical complexity with two bassists adding their own low end weight.

Review: Hank Mobley might not be so well known among the greats of saxophonic jazz, but that probably boils down to him making No Room For Squares. Indeed, only the coolest of the menthol-cool were permitted access to this album and Mobley's performances at the time of its release; this was undoubtedly a self-selecting process ensured by the garnering of some of the hottest talents of the day on band duties, including Herbie Hancock on piano, Donald Byrd on trumpet, and Butch Warren on bass. Moving like an effortless meandering current slinking downstream, the six tracks on this vinyl reissue put on effortless instrumental airs.
