Review: First released in digital and CD formats via Sacred Rhythm, 'Progessive Roots Evolution: A Song For Healing' hears Joaqin 'Joe' Claussell's indelible style of long-form spiritual house music re-flaunted to especial somatic ends. Intentionally crafted as a piece that bridges the needs of both the music and dance communities to whom Claussell is mutually close, this is a suite divided into multiple sections that feed on one another; they appose elements of samba, jazz and house, with ambient interstices and even ruminative piano meltdowns ('Healer', 'Heloise'). This ultra limited yellow LP edition is the audiophile's preference, its dynamism best flaunted on the floaty but driving 'Cosmic Arts' mix.

Review: Canadian soul and boogie man Goldie Alexander dropped his most well-known hit 'Knocking Down Love' in 1981 on the TGO label. It now lends its name to this longer collection of his work which takes in all the tracks off his one and only studio album - 1983's Fool In Love - as well as various different club and dub mixes of those tunes. It makes for a heartwarming mix of disco, electronic grooves and smoochy soul sounds with Goldie's, well, golden, tones front and centre. A great one to have for more intimate dancefloor moments.

Review: Alhaji Waziri Oshomah is a master of Afro sounds and rhythms that cut deep. He is from the Edo State in southern Nigeria and always as making music and often holds local sermons. His music was highlighted by David Bryne's always-excellent Luaka Bop label in September with World Spirituality Classics 3: The Muslim Highlife Of Alhaji Waziri Oshomah and now comes another bumper collection of his tunes. As the title suggests, Vol 1-5: 1978-1984 pulls together his best work from that six-year period across five 12"s and a special booklet.

Review: Some 14 years in the making, Les Jardins Mystiques Vol.1 comprises 52 tracks of music composed, arranged and produced by Miguel Atwood-Ferguson; with contributions from 50+ friends including Kamasi Washington, Thundercat, Carlos NiNo, Austin Peralta, Bennie Maupin, Gabe Noel, Jamael Dean, and more. If that wasn't monumental enough, just know that this lengthy classical-experimental-jazz album is certainly Miguel's intended magnum opus, having been written and recorded entirely as a result of his own uncompromised, self-funded efforts. Such an extensive time period reflects an album of longstanding personal growth for the artist; an attitude of continual evolution and innocence, of constantly coming of age and reinventing oneself.

Review: Scottish funk and r&b group The Average White Band had a fine series of disco and soul hits back in their heyday in the 1970s. As well as originals like their best known smash hit 'Pick Up the Pieces' they also served up superb covers like 'Let's Go Round Again.' AWB is their most successful album and it now turns a full half a centre old so gets a special reissue on Edsel across no fewer than 15 CDs. The album was number two for three weeks to Elton John's Greatest Hits upon release in 1974 and will no doubt do big numbers again all these years later.

Review: Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers were one of the most potent forces in the hard bop era - and this live album proves the point in no uncertain terms. Recorded at Parisian concert venue L'Olympia in 1958, around the same time Holiday For Skins was released, this is the sound of a band in full flight, springing through uptempo cuts and softer reveries with irrepressible joy and feeling. Blakey on drums was backed up by Lee Morgan on trumpet, Benny Golson on tenor sax, Bobby Timmons on piano and Jaymie Merritt on bass, winding up in an exuberant ensemble who deliver their sound with focus and urgency.

Review: Brian Auger's Oblivion Express was the phoenix that rose from the ashes of sixties combo The Trinity. Fusing R&B, jazz, soul and funk, keyboard maestro Brian Auger created a new breed of music that took the US and the UK by storm. Auger's unique experimentation culminated in rhythm-infused jazz funk that united black and white '70s audiences. The 6 studio albums that make up Complete Oblivion illustrate the group's diverse musical influences and progression, from the 1970 self titled debut's heavy jazz-rock to the jazz fusion, Latin and disco-tinged Reinforcements from 1975 - this process no doubt powered by the group's evolving line up, which included guitarists Jim Mullen and Jack Mills, drummers Robbie McIntosh & Steve Ferrone, bassists Barry Dean and Clive Chaman and vocalist Alex Ligertwood.

Review: When it was first released a quarter of a century ago, the Buena Vista Social Club album - a conceptual album produced by Ry Cooder and Juan de Marcos Gonzalez, featuring veteran Cuban musicians recreating music that had been popular on the island nation in the 1940s and '50s - had a huge cultural impact. Not only did it sell like hot cakes around the World, leading to a US tour and documentary film, but it also raised interest in Cuban music, something that has sustained to this day. This 25th Anniversary edition, then, is fully justified. It boasts fully remastered vinyl and CD versions of the original album, each with bonus tracks, as well as partner discs entirely made up of previously unheard songs and alternate takes.

It's a record packed with highlights, not least a powerful ballad on 'Little Girl Blue', or the hard bop swing of 'My Girl Shirl' and 'Lex', the last of those two in particular features a soulful solo from Mobley that really stays with you. This is part fo the Tone Poet series which places particular focusses on exceptional audiophile Blue Note LP reissues presented by Music Matters.

Review: In the mid-80s, Svitlana Okhrimenko, Oleksandr Kohanovs'kyi, and Tamila Mazur, students at the Reinhold Glier Kyiv Academy of Music, formed the foundation of Cukor Bila Smert. Their blend of music and camaraderie led to the addition of Eugene Taran, who further helped shape the band's vision. Dubbed Sugar - White Death, their ironic moniker challenged media sensationalism and amidst endless musical exploration, they crafted two albums in 1988 and 1989. The band's unique "sugar calypso sound" emerged, a blend of Kohanovs'kyi's music and lyrics by Okhrimenko and Taran. A significant studio session in 1990 yielded tracks featured on the Mannered Music compilation which sparked international interest. Their journey concluded in 1993 with the release of "Selo" by Koka Records, and now some of the best bits make it onto this new collection.

Review: Milestones is the full-pun-intended landmark 1958 album by the legendary jazz trumpeter Miles Davis, which marked his transition from hard bop to modal jazz. Featuring classics like 'Milestones', 'Straight, No Chaser' and 'Two Bass Hit', it was notable as one of Davis' earliest experimentations in public with modal scale patterns that was available commercially. Marking a great milestone since its original release in mono, it now comes pressed on numbered 180 gram SuperVinyl - which is a new ultra-quiet vinyl formulation which enhances the sound quality and durability of original recordings - as well as with a deluxe gatefold jacket and a booklet with rare photos and liner notes.

Review: In 1973, Del Jones - a proto-rapper, musician and social commentator regarded by those in the know as Philadelphia's answer to Gil-Scott Heron - recorded an inspired counter-cultural statement called Court is Closed. That album, a laidback fusion of loose-limbed jazz, soul and funk onto which he sung and spoke his truth, was rapidly deleted, with Jones opting to re-record it with a heavy horn section. Re-released and credited to Del Jones' Positive Vibes, it back a cult classic amongst Black American listeners. This much-needed reissue brings both versions of the album together for the first time on one remastered double-vinyl set and should be essential listening for all those who love Scott-Heron and fellow proto-rap pioneers the Last Poets.

Review: The third and most especial edition in the latest selection of versions of the reissued LP by Alonso Toro, Paul Desenne, and Pedro Vasquez - Alzheimer. Coming hot on the heels of an original, as-it-was reissue as well as a gemmy Ricardo Villalobos rerub, this deluxe edition comes in a beautiful yellow and lilac LP box, and features the latter's two remixes as well as an exclusive Wetsuit Je Me Souviens version. A curio of the Venezuelan vanguard, the album was recorded between January 1997-99, and hears the fabled trio of musicians "forget everything" that came before, enlisting the recorded help of every member of the animal kingdom - from mammals to insects - and shooting squarely for a whole new sound-world-order in the process. Sonically flowing between heritage Latin music and minimal electronica, the purpose is to confuse and the effect is indeed confounding, though no less dazzling.

They have a wide array of sounds and skills between them and put them to good use on their second album Enigmatic Society, which is presented here as a Japanese Edition on milk-clear white vinyl with the requisite obi-strip. This is super smooth material that mixes up hip hop, new soul, jazz and plenty of great samples to make for a laidback and romantic record full of lovely vocals from the likes of Phoenix, Orin Ray and Ant Clemens.

Review: Matador is something of a forgotten masterpiece that gets a deserving deluxe treatment here with an all-analogue reissue on nice and heavy 180 gram vinyl. Released back in 1963 by passionate jazz players, trumpeter Kenny Dorham and alto talent Jackie McLean, the energetic album also features spirited performances from Bobby Timmons on piano, and the locked-in rhythm section of Teddy Smith on bass and J.C. Moses on drums. There is frenetic interplay between all, with loose and swinging keys and real spontaneity resulting in hugely expressive and energetic sounds. Remarkably, the whole album was recorded in just one day in 1962 and brims with rawness and realness.

Review: Black is the first record from saxophone player D.A. Mekonnen under the Dragonchild alias. He is someone who is always thinking in cosmic terms and this sonic exploration draws on that with inspiration taken from Black visionaries Haile Gerima, an Ethiopian filmmaker, nonconformist American artist Lonnie Holley, and American activist and author Adrienne Maree Brown. All four of the one-sided albums are designed to be played simultaneously and are made in tribute to the great Alice Coltrane whose influence looms large. It is a ferocious and meditative album unlike any other you will hear this year.

Review: Eden Ahbez was a the prototypical hippie in California, writing songs and recording through the 40s to the 60s and penning Nat King Cole's hit single 'Nature Boy' amongst others. This album, his definitive 1960 opus, is a unique curio which touches on jazz, spirituality and much more besides, but ultimately sounds utterly unique, much like Ahbez himself was. There's a romantic lilt to his playing, a little sadness but also much innocence and joy in these songs. If they don't stir up the inner nature child in you, you must have a heart of concrete. Alongside the standard Epsilon reissue of the album is this stunning, wood-cover edition which gives the album a special kind of prominence, not to mention tapping into the earthly magic of Ahbez's music.

Review: 'You Must Believe In Spring' is the celebrated 70th studio album from pioneering jazz pianist Bill Evans. Now remastered by the legendary artist of the trade Kevin Gray for Concord, the smoking, kiss-curled jazz piano great gets a full-on reminisce in stereo, this time charting his dextrous, chromatic ivory-straddling as part of a trio, with Eddie Gomnez on bass and Eliot Zigmund on drums. Soft, pining and full of harmonic curiosities and indistinct tempi, it includes a range of Evans' originals and covers, including Frank Laico's 'You Must Believe In Spring' and Johnny Mandel's 'Theme From M*A*S*H*'.

Review: French artistic and multi-instrumentalist FKJ's glossy brand of funk and soul has reached many a great height. He is by now a well known star around the world so of course the labels he has worked with decided it is now high time we looked back on his. His self-titled album French Kiwi Juice was his first long player and one that showed off the artist's incredible multi-instrumental chops. Super-sweet yet also tart sonic juices from the Franco-New Zealander, returning to this exclusive vinyl pressing.

Review: Grant Green's Live at Club Mozambique is getting a first ever and long overdue issue on vinyl courtesy of a new partnership between Third Man Records and Blue Note Records called the 313 Series Partnership in recognition of the fact it will focus on seminal jazz talents from Detroit, whose zip code is 313. The record was recorded live on January 6th and 7th, 1971 at Club Mozambique and showcases Green's extensive foundatiosn in r&b. When added to his next level mastery of bebop and a style that always favoured expressiveness over technical expertise and you have an enthralling listen.

Review: A live album by the American jazz guitarist Grant Green, Live At Club Mozambique - you guessed it - was recorded at the Club Mozambique in Detroit, on the night of January 6-7, 1971. Not released until 2006, and not to be confused with the Lonnie Smith album of the same name, the LP ended up as a means for longer-serving fans to recall Green's funk-oriented style in the late stage of his career. Renowned as an album that flaunts Green's sheer passion, poured into instrumental spectacle alone - the passion of playing - it's heard backed by a stellar band, including Houston Person on tenor saxophone, Ronnie Foster on organ and Idris Muhammad on drums.

Review: Despite his considerable contributions to drum & bass over many decades as a DJ, producer and promoter Grooverider has released only one solo artist album and that is 1998's Mysteries Of Funk which now turns 25 years old. Produced in conjunction with Optical, it gets a special, limited edition anniversary reissue across six sides of vinyl including standout singles 'Rainbows of Colour' and 'Where's Jack The Ripper.' It came a decade or so after Grooverider established himself alongside long time partner Fabio with sets at the UK's best illegal raves before then starting their own seminal Rage night at Heaven.

Review: Those interested in Japanese cartoons should know Space Adventure Cobra. First broadcast in 1982, it is now considered one of the country's finest animated TV series. This triple-vinyl box set celebrates Kentano Haneda and Yuji Ono's music from the series, combining compositions featured on the show with unheard extended versions and tracks that never made the cut first time round. Musically, it's a mix of Japanese disco, sax-sporting lounge jazz, jazz-funk, neo-classical movements and eccentric interludes, all doused in layers of cosmic dust and stargazing colour. The release also comes packaged with a 12-page booklet telling the story of the series and the making of the appealing, endlessly entertaining soundtrack.

This one focusses on Andrew Hill, who was often said to be one of the most distinctive pianists and composing talents in the game. This session was first recorded in 1963 yet for some reason remained unrelated until 2003, when it finally made it to CD. Now presented on vinyl it features a fine ensemble including Woody Shaw and Dizzy Reece on trumpet, Julian Priester on trombone, Joe Farrell on saxes, and more on bass, horns, drums and tuba. The results are hugely moving.

Review: Billie Holiday's 'Lady In Satin' was first released way back in 1958, and came as the legendary singer's second-to-last album before her lifetime discographic coda, 'Last Recording'. Arguably though, this is an album unafraid of death despite its final nature. Though mired in the blues and putting across Holiday's gritty, almost doomy voice in HD quality, the album carries with it a swank sophistication (thanks to its almost omnipresent string backing) that renders it timelessly graceful.

Review: Pianist and composer Keith Jarrett's fame stems in large part from his many solo piano improvisations, performed regularly since the early 1970s. Solo Concerts: Bremen/Lausanne is a recording of two such concerts, held in Germany and Switzerland in 1973; originally released as a 3xLP by ECM Records, it now comes reissued and remastered via ECM. This live compilation flaunts Jarrett's emotional range, spanning everything from lyrical melodies to dissonant clusters, from rhythmic grooves to abstract soundscapes. The album was a critical and commercial success, winning the DownBeat award for the best jazz recording of the year in 1974, and establishing Jarrett as a leading figure in the solo piano genre.

Channelling every instrument from kalimba to 'spirit bowls', a near-endless line of El'zabar's ancestral spirits are invoked, as dual tributes to spirituality and city life are laid bare actoss a chilled-out but grandiose 9 tracks, from the opening 'A Time For Healing' to the tributary 'Eddie Harris'.

The anime movie itself is one of the most famous of the genre and follows the adventures of the crew of Bebop, a bounty hunter ship that chases criminals and turns them into the Inter Solar System Police for reward, Kanno's zany fusion of rock, blues and jazz oozes cool. It's a musical mix of Afro-Cuban rhythms, New York horns and plenty more.

The album itself is incredible, with fantastic musicianship, arrangements and vocals, while the cast list - which includes original electrofunk outfit Unlimited Touch, Peech Boys main man Bernard Fowler, Honey Dijon, Cindy Mazelle, Moodymann, Kerri Chandler and his son Nico - is similarly impressive. It's a great product, packed with brilliant music: a fitting finale to this portion of the ongping 'Expansions NYC' project.

Review: Industrial noise jazz of the highest order comes reissued by Black Editions, who cast their sights back on the late 1960s, a lesser-known golden era for unbounded experimentation in the genre. Japanese stalwart and bandleading visionary Masayuki Takayanagi was at this time in the twilight years of his life, but that hardly stopped him from scouring new musical frontiers; he formed New Direction as a means to freely upend jazz, in a way that mirrored the rapid societal changes of post-occupation Japan. A raucous 3xLP boxset.

Review: Revered jazz guitarist Wes Montgomery originally released Full House in 1962, and it became one of his most popular albums. Recorded live at Tsubo coffee house in Berkeley, California, the classic LP showcased particular selections from his performance which became hugely influential thanks to Montgomery's distinctive, expressive tone. Now Craft have gathered together all the original analogue tapes to present a definitive edition of the album spread across three discs, including some alternate takes recorded during the hybrid recording session and concert. After his untimely passing in 1968, Montgomery's playing became a source of fascination for successive generations of jazz guitarists, and here, laid out in comprehensive fashion, is the reason why.

Review: Wes Montgomery is a jazz giant and one of the scene's finest guitarists. He worked with the Wynton Kelly Trio back in the mid-sixties and that is when he played a set at the famed Half Note jazz club in New York City with drummer Jimmy Cobb and bassists Paul Chambers, Ron Carter, Herman Wright and Larry Ridley. The show was more than two horns long and was for radio broadcast and now it has been remastered for this triple album Maximum Swing: The Unissued 1965 Half Note Recordings. A booklet with new essays and interviews adds extra context to a classic album.

Review: Amghar: The Godfather Of Tuareg Music Vol 1 by Abdallah Oumbadougou is a superb trip into the heart of the ever fascinating sound of Tuareg music. Oumbadougou, revered as the godfather of this rich musical tradition, delivers a spellbinding collection of tracks that showcase his mastery of desert blues. Each composition is a testament to the deep cultural heritage and spiritual resonance of Tuareg music. They blend hypnotic rhythms, intricate guitar work and haunting vocals all with a melancholic and seductive feel from the soul-stirring chants of 'Afrikya' to the infectious energy of 'Tabsiq Dalet'. This album transports listeners to the vast landscapes of the Sahara, evoking a profound sense of wanderlust and timeless beauty as it does so.

Review: Hard to define, rule breaking and game-changing producer Theo Parrish is back with another of his challenging and superlative albums. This one - which naturally arrives on his own Sound Signature label - is a collaboration with Maurissa Rose that true sooth the soul. It s full of his usual deadly grooves, shamanistic percussive layers and jazz energies with plenty of his famous luscious, meditative loops. Add in the smooth vocals of Rose - which come in the form of a soulful stream of consciousness - and you have yet another unique album from this true maverick of the form.

Review: Blue Note are working hard on a wealth of reissues and the latest is the third and final album from jazz bass virtuoso Paul Chambers. He was only 22 years old at the time but already well celebrated for his skills and this is a superbly seductive album with stalwarts Hank Jones on piano, Kenny Burrell on guitar, and Art Taylor on drums. There are a number of highlights for smooth jazz lovers such as the gentle and meandering 'Dear Old Stockholm' and more upbeat drum work of 'The Theme.'

Review: American jazz trumpeter and flugelhorn player Roy Hargrove made his most enduring mark as a fusionist, poking holes in the barriers between every genre between gospel to hip-hop, and this is a legacy more than cemented on one of his many great LPs, Hard Groove, titularly playing on his name while amounting to a paragon in the art of genre-busting. Running the entire gamut of styles Hargrove was interested and involved in at the turn of the millennium, the album brings together many covers and renditions, with D'Angelo appearing on the cover of Funkadelic's 'I'll Stay' and Q-Tip on 'Poetry', among many other greats.

Review: Roberto Olzer Trio is here to douse you in blissful jazz sounds with this expansive and rewarding new album, Celeste. It is packed with refined sounds mastered by the maestro Stefano Amerio and features Older on piano next to Yuri Goloubev on double bass and Mauro Beggio on drums. The sounds flow freely, the pianos are quick and lively as fingers dart about the keys and the constant ticking of the drums and weight of the double bass keep things rooted in the here and now. A sublime sound for sure.

Review: In the field of spiritual jazz, there are few albums as seminal as Pharoah. Originally released in 1977 and serving as a landmark for the genre as well as Pharoah Sanders himself, it remains a towering work of understated beauty, using negative space and patient pauses as potent as the notes played. Sanders sadly passed on to the next realm in 2022 amidst a wave of renewed appreciation for his work, and Luaka Bop have taken on the task of reissuing this otherworldly classic in fine style. As well as the original album, a second record features two previously unreleased live versions of 'Harvest Time', and the package comes with a 24-page booklet featuring a wealth of additional material to round out the experience of one of the all-time greatest jazz albums.

Review: As recently as this year with his Floating Points collaboration, Pharoah Sanders has proven to be in excellent form. Which is all the more remarkable given the length of his career. Oe of the early highlights was the 1981 classic, Rejoice, which explored a more mellow sound than previous works. The record is rife with superb improvs a la late 50s John Coltrane as well as fine turns from top players including pianists Joe Bonner and John Hicks, bassist Art Davis and drummers Elvin Jones and Billy Higgins. Bobby Hutcherson adds some start vibes work and that helps the album to hold your attention closely throughout.

Review: An integral figure on the Motor City scene for the best part of two decades, Specter has always been a particularly prolific producer. Built To Last - appearing on Theo Parrish's significant Sound Signature label - is his first album-length excursion. It offers an expansive summary of his inspirations and influences - many will notice subtle nods towards local deep house, techno and electro heroes, as well as more experimental synthesizer music, off-kilter electronic jazz-funk, deep space dub and eyeliner-clad early '80s synth-wave - while also showcasing a trademark sound that's every bit as dusty, warm, loose and lo-fi as his lauded Detroit peers.

They all originally came on the cult TBM aka Three Blind Mice label which has a hardcore following in the Far East and is just as popular with those that know over in Europe. The tracks included here are suitable for both long time jazz heads and the newly inquisitive listen alike with plenty of lush sounds from Sunao Wada Quintet Plus 1, Tatsuya Takahashi & The Tokyo Union and Masaru Imada Trio Plus 2 amongst many more.

Review: It's astounding to think that Mother 2 was released in 1994. A landmark moment for the SNES video game system, it arrived five years after its predecessor, and as such enjoyed the benefits of what was then a next generation platform. Felt in terms of graphical and gameplay capabilities, suffice to say the upgraded hardware was also capable of capturing much more engaging and imaginative music. Here we are, almost 30 years on from when this sequel first captivated people, and the score itself gets a re-release on vinyl. Again drafting Hirokazu Tanaka and Keiichi Suzuki as composers, the pair would later explain how much more freedom they had due to the technological progress made between this and its predecessor. Translated into a music review, think deep, atmospheric ambient constructed from many layers of sound. A futuristic sonic trip into the far reaches of the cosmos that still holds up within the genre today.

Review: Horace Tapscott founded the Pan African Peoples Arkestra in Los Angeles in 1961, foregrounding community and expressions for Black people and their arts. Across their considerable legacy, this live album is one of the Arkestra's standout moments and now it's finally being repressed. Scott's leadership guides the Arkestra on a journey through the most life-affirming spiritual jazz, fuelled by Afro-centric rhythms, meandering basslines and soaring flute and horn arrangements. Recorded at the Immanuel United Church of Christ in LA in 1979, this double album is a stunning document of Tapscott's project during a golden era for underground jazz.
