Review: Tucked away on Louie Vega's fantastic - and vast - Expansions in the NYC album were a handful of tributes to disco legends Patrick Adams and Larry Levan. This double-pack brings those tributes to the floor. Vega opens with his Elements of Live band cover of Sine's Patrick Adams-produced 1978 B-side 'Chimi', turning the four-minute cut into a driving-but-bouncy, near 14-minute disco epic rich in restless bass, attractive vibraphone solos and spacey synths. On 'Change Your Mind', which is presented in both full vocal and instrumental forms, Vega recruits the voice of the Peech Boys, Bernard Fowler, and turns down a sparse, heavily electronic workout reminiscent of Larry Levan's early '80s mixes. It's genuinely great, as is the DJ Spinna-sporting, hybrid disco/organic house cover of Adams' classic 'Atmosphere Strut'. In a word: essential!

Review: A recreational offshoot of the band Pleasure, Portland's Lights Out were led by their trumpeter Tonmy Collins as a way of staying musically exercised, pushing the envelope and getting a few local bookings on the side when Pleasure weren't on the road. Their sound started out as jazz fusion but they soon developed into a monstrously funky synth/-led funk rollercoaster. as vocalist Andy Stokes and guitarist Greg "Gee Mack" Dalton fronted the band.
The four tracks here were recorded as a demo for Solar Records in 1982 at Wave Sound Studios - a facility more used to housing punk acts such as The Wipers and The Rats - but the label 'fumbled' it and the band fellow apart soon after. Some 40 years on, the likes of 'Surrender Your Love' and 'Tonight' still sound fresh as the proverbial daisy, and likely to lure feet onto the dancefloor.

Review: Discodelic obviously rates this latest 7" of theirs because they have released it in more than one format. As well as a straight back wax version you can also cop it on this pink & blue splattered vinyl complete with a booklet that provides some extra context about the music from Cizana and La Nueva Generation. Both tunes are flame-hot and bristling with energy. The A-side is all joyous flutes, hand drums and percussive Latin grooves then the flip slows things down and ups the brass. Two belters and this one looks as good as it sounds, too.

Review: Discodelic is starting a series dedicated to the music of Panama and they kick off with Los Criollos and a fully authorised reissue of their 'Pa' los Panas de San Francisco.' The band might not be as well known as they should and that's down to the fact they recorded only two tunes with this orchestra in the mid-seventies and disappeared forever. Which is a shame, because as this 7" proves - it also comes on coloured vinyl - they had a red hot and infectious sound full of big horns, percussive liveliness and fiery vocals.

Review: The blistering, one-of-a-kind West Coast disco-funk record 'U Need Me' by LA Propinquity surfaces as part of a new body of historic productions initially intended for compilation on a full-length LP. For reasons undisclosed, this never happened; instead, Italian sonic exhumers Cannonball Records have been afforded the privilege of reissuing these tracks across a series of 7"s themselves. Hardly and criminially under-recognised in their day, the L.A. Propinquity were nonetheless composed of the angelic city's finest, with drummer James Gadson forming a prominent part. A blast from the 1970s, 'U Need Me' is a beaming slice of unrequited longing, set to delicious funk tones that are as maximized as they are unstrained.

Review: African American funk and soul group The Lowdown Band was made up of musicians from both the East and West coasts of the US. They rose to prominence in the 1980s across California and took inspiration from the proceeding decade's funk and soul. Their basslines were always groovy and their drums tight with plenty of catchy melodies and soaring horns. 'Music Is The Answer' was their biggest hit and it came in 1982 with the soulful vocals of lead singer Raul Gallegos. It claimed tot he top 20 of the US charts at the time and is a gorgeous cut to this day. Here it is reissued with another of their big ones, 'Somebody.'

Review: While Last Poets are rightly regarded as the 'godfathers of rap', others would insist that Hustlers Convention - a 1973 solo album from member Jalal Nuriddin under the Lightnin' Rod alias - had more influence on the birth of hip-hop. In part, that's down to the funk backing he received on the album from his chosen backing bands, which included the mighty Kool & The Gang. Here, Dynamite Cuts prove the point by offering two killer cuts from the set on 7" for the very first time. A-side 'Sport' is a Blaxploitation style delight - all ear-catching horn motifs, shuffling funk breaks, weighty bass, wah-wah guitar and languid spoken word vocals - while 'Four Bitches Is What I Got' sees our hero make merry over a more stripped-back take on the same backing track.

Review: Los Caneyes was the first ever solo project from Cuban funk master Juan Pablo Torres and now Future Rootz - in collaboration with Canal Sounds and EGREM - is serving up a first-ever vinyl release of his early singles 'No Estabas No estabas Tu' and 'Oye Ven Y Baila Mi Son' on 7". These two superbly funky Afro-Cuban tracks were recorded in 1973 by this influential musical innovator. Review: This is the debut release by the French duo Last Bongo In Paris, also known as Cleon & Jazzy Pidjay. Both are DJs and producers with a background in Latin funk and jazz-funk, and these influences more than strongly shine on 'Green Season', a release whose priority is heavy breakbeats backed by a whismical, live-instrumental flavour. The title track swims and sways through meandering kazoos and psychedelically-filtered falsettos, while the B-side brings up the flip with yet three more incredible live-but-edited-in-post numbers, plus a really weird, never-heard-before 'Bonus Scratch'.

Review: 1977's Delights of the Garden, which saw The Last Poets accompanied by legendary soul-jazz sticks-man Bernard Purdie, remains one of the proto-rap innovators' greatest albums. The team behind the Dynamite Cuts label clearly agree, because they've decided to stick two of the set's most magical tracks on one must-have 45. On the A-side there's a chance to savour LP highlight 'It's a Trip', where the band sings and speaks over skittish, loose-limbed Purdie breakbeats, fizzing funk guitars and rubbery bass. Review: The Light Touches label and production crew brings their magic fingers to another series of hot and lesser known tunes and forgotten classics here, all with something of an Afro tinge. 'Vera' kicks off with a playful and funky disco sound that is riddled with Afro vocals and melodies that make you want to move. There is more energy to the bristling drums and flailing hits of 'Savage' which has plenty of effects and loops bring the energy then the final cut is 'We De Youth'. It's a loose-limbed and percussive workout with big horns leading the way. Glorious stuff.

The unique artists write both of the tunes included on this 7" for his "When Was The Last Time" album and neither has appeared in this format before now. It comes with a cover as iconic as the tunes, which are both soul-stirring and heart-wrenching slower dancers. Review: The Leo Zero Edit Archive is here, you can safely assume, to serve up edits from the vast archives of Leo Zero. The first volume is a doozy that kicks off with 'Love Affair' - a lazy and low sung funk burner with noodling bass riffs and a glorious vocal full of happiness. 'Let Me Love U' has a yearning male vocal that is as lovestruck as they come over more leggy mid tempo beats. 'Easy Does It' is defined by its superb string stabs and rolling drums and 'For A Living' closes out with a more house learning disco beat that is fat and fantastic. We can't wait for more.

Latitude is a seriously and proudly French artist who oozes sophistication and pop hooks that drip with attitude. The musicianship too is of the highest order - irresistible jazz-funk that glows at every turn. First off is the uptempo 'Leo (Extended Mix)' with big vocals from Parisian singer Club Celest and tight, clipped beats packed with funk. Review: Soul diggers rejoice, as an exquisite and insanely rare piece of treasure from Barbara Lynn comes back within reach of everyday folk. 'Mellow Feeling' came out in 1979 on Love Records, but it was clearly a very limited pressing given how scarce copies have been since, and how lofty the second hand prices reached. The hype is not without merit - this is a flawless slice of funked-up soul with Lynn on imperious form, and the two-part hit across both sides takes the groove deeper and further. Top work to Soul Brother dusting this one down for a fresh outing - it's a track that needs to be danced to.

Review: The Beats & Breaks label's "Extended Breaks" series is red hot if you ask us and they always offer up direct to dancefloor beats. This one is a classic amongst many that is often reissued to keep beat heads happy. If finds the mysterious re-editor add their take on Billy Squier's 1980 heavy rock workout and brings its bottom-heavy drums and the singer's impassioned vocal yelps to the fore, Plenty of the gnarled guitar riffs are removed too. The crew's subtle revision of Le Pamplemousse's drowsy, synth-laden deep disco shuffler 'Gimme What You Got' on the flip offers less intensity with its string-laden slice of sun-kissed sweetness.

Review: We could all do with a little more love, peace and unity in our life and DJ Tron is happy to oblige on his new one with Luana. The title track is an old school bit of hip hop with huge drum breaks, fills and a sing-along-chorus that's all about the good times. "Soul In Ya Mind" is a deeper and more considered jam with golden era flow and warmer chords, put still plenty of playful stabs and breaks to get you moving. Limited to just 100 copies but in three different colours, this one is sure to shift fast.

Review: Food Stamps is a great example of a record that fell between the cracks on its original release back in 1982. The one and only release from Baltimore-based funk-rock explorer Billie Senger, it has achieved cult status amongst record collectors due to its obscurity (finding original copies is notoriously tough). This reissue - pressed on green vinyl with new cover artwork - should, then, prove popular. "Food Stamps" - a riotously loose and floor-friendly chunk of funk from the Rare Earth school of white funk-rock - is the real killer, though the MC5-influenced flipside "How Do I Know" impresses with its fuzzy, recorded-in-a-shed feel and extra-cosmic production.
