Love & Happiness (4:57)
Yellow Bird (4:44)
Review: Monty Alexander's 'Love & Happiness,' it might not surprise you to learn, is a cover version of the great Al Green's 'Love & Happiness.' He hooked up with Ernest Ranglin for the occasion and the pair laid it down in 1974, two years after the original came out, with super slick jazz-funk fusion over a reggae tinged beat. The original chords are recognisable, but the whole track i such more mellifluous and bright, the golden chords oozing warmth and the rolling rhythm getting you feeling all snuggly and loved up. Definitely worth a place in your collection.

Beatmaker (instrumental) (3:09)
Review: Actor, producer and musician Matt Berry teams up instrumentally with vocalist Emma Noble on this alt-funky, psychic single jam, which comes to limited 7" wax. Lyrically, 'Beatmaker' is a rags-to-riches tale of the son of a tailor-maker who makes it big - "they know that you're the gravy-maker". Gradually, though, our protagonist's penchant for financial conquest and accruing assets begins to bite him in the foot. Ironically, that's not something you'll learn so readily after you inevitably cop the wax!

Breakwater - "Release The Beast"
Edwin Birdsong - "Cola Bottle Baby"
Review: Two more of the most famous tracks sampled by Daft Punk get pressed up on this cheeky little 7 inch. Breakwater's "Release The Beast" is unmistakably the blueprint for "Robot Rock" while "Cola Bottle Baby" by Edwin Birdsong was liberally sampled by Guy-Manuel and Tommy B on "Harder Better Stronger Faster". Both delicious funky disco cuts in their own right and great fun to drop!

Cutso - "Fallen Love (Woo Woo)" (4:22)
Excel - "Had To Shut You Down" (4:08)
Review: Private Stock Records is slowly but surely building up a golden catalogue of funk magic. This fourth EP is another high-class double dose that opens with Cutso's 'Fallen Love (Woo Woo)', a swirling slow burner of a tune with heavy, languid drums and twisted vocal samples that eventually coalesce into a warming party vibe. Excel's 'Had To Shut You Down' is a glorious soul gem with lush Philly strings and ornamental arrangements that raise your spirits and elevate your mood with its seductive grooves, not to mention a classic r&b vocal sample.

I Wanna Take A Chance With You (4:18)
Review: More recently spotted with The Georgia Soul Drifters or The Coasters, Early Clover's recording history can be traced back almost 40 years with this previously super-rare 45. With his soft-but-arresting tones, his yearning vocal style is comparable to Stevie Wonder, especially on the slow and dreamy Innervisions-esque "Who Are You?" Meanwhile on the B, "I Wanna Take A Chance With You" switches dreams for funk reality with a Kool & The Gang style feel-good throw down. Silky.

Brazilian Rhyme (extended mix) (4:33)
My Love (4:32)
Review: Absolute gold from Earth Wind & Fire that was only ever included as filler track on their 1977 All N All album, it's been a staple sample across house and hip-hop ever since, utilised creatively by everyone from Tribe Called Quest and Danny Krivit. Previously only 80 seconds long, Fryer has managed to unearth a previously unreleased extended version that really digs into those honeyed harmonies. "My Love" takes us four years forward to their 13th album Raise! where the musical emphasis has developed from all-out vocal soul to a more restrained rare groove feel. One per customer, AOTN aren't messing around on this one.

Back On You (feat Crystal Winds) (13:28)
Review: Having previously re-invented Eddie Kendricks' 'Date With The Rain' as a luscious lover's rock epic, Athens of the North house band East Coast Love Affair has now turned its attention to another 1970s classic: Roy Ayers' 'Chicago'. In an act of genuine musical genius, they've re-imagined the track as a TB-303 and TR-909-driven chunk of acid house/deep house fusion, effectively updating Ayers' celebration of the Windy City while paying tribute in their own unique way. It's great, as is flipside 'Back on You (featuring Crystal Winds)', a dreamy, immersive and slowly building chunk of sunrise-ready, bongo-sporting musical deepness that's as sun-kissed and emotion-stirring as they come.

Shake (5:58)
Review: Athens Of The North get themselves in party mode with a fourth EP from East Coast Love Affair. There is some series fun to be had in these tracks, with side one. 'Confrontations,' being a rebuild of a rare disco funk 45 by Homegrown Syndrome. On the backside is 'Shake' which goes deeper but still has plenty of dance floor appear. It has tropical perc and whirring electronics that just scream 'dance' while the actual screaming vocal reminds of Moby classic 'Go!' These are hefty tunes, rare as you like, but immediately accessible and high impact.

Review: Pittsburgh party-starters the East Liberty Quartet let loose with their biggest EP to date. Coming across like a US version of Crazy P, or Faze-O produced by Pharrell Williams, each of the cuts on here oozes a sultry electronic boogie that hints at the electro days of Tryone Brunson while embracing more modern house sounds that might hear on Defected or Big Love. Highlights include the soaring backing vocals on "Worlds Away" and the lusciously loose drumwork and squidgy keys on "Rays".

That Is Why (3:15)
Review: You can always rely on Super Disco Edits for exactly that. The long-running label's 68th such serving is from the Ebony Rhythm Funk Campaign and features a couple of their previously unreleased joints. Opener '69 Cents' brings slick and sleek afro drumming with some splendid horn sections powering things along. A smooth and soulful vocal ride in amongst the drum grooves and takes you on a fine trip. On the reverse is 'That Is Why,' which slows things down a little and gets more loved up. The backing vocals lend the whole thing an air of class as the lining trumpets soar and the mellifluous chords sink you in deep.

Talk Is Cheap (3:01)
Review: The Echomen's song 'Let's Get Together' first appeared on the third volume of the Movements compilation series many many years ago. Now repressed via Tramp, it's a soul-swing anthem for positive change, calling on people young and old to make peace with their own communities. It rails directly against individualism, opting for humility; the B-side 'Talk Is Cheap' echoes a similar sentiment, but within the context of a relationship.

Churn The Butter (2:47)
Kitchen Cookin' (2:30)
Review: 'Churn The Butter', a mid-1960s single on the tiny (but back then surprisingly prolific) Chicagoan label M&M, is the undoubted highlight of pianist and bandleader Eddie Buster's all-too-brief recording career. It's something of rhythm & blues gem all told, and well worthy of this timely TRAMP Records reissue. Fronted by vocalist Jr Robinson, the track is rich in heavy organ lines (courtesy of Buster himself), heavy horns and guttural rhythm and blues grooves. Flipside 'Kitchen Cookin' is another riotous and raucous affair, with Buster and his band charging through a low-down rhythm-and-blues-goes-funk instrumental that will have all but the most sluggish punters up and dancing in no time at all.

We Would Like To Spend Some Time With You (4:28)
Review: Freestyle Records has got a brilliant and rather rare bit of boogie here in the form of Eddie Capone's 'I Wont Give You Up.' This is the first officially licensed reissue of this 1985 gem by the reggae, funk and soul mainstay of that decade. He played with various noted outfits such as Chairmen of the Board, Arthur Brown's Kingdom Come and Edwin Starr and was also in the short-lived band Casablanca. He founded the Treatment band in the early 1980s and played with a rotating cast of musicians. The tunes included on this 7" are some of them with Diane Jones providing vocals on the A-side, which is the standout gem.

Love Has Never Passed Me By (3:30)
Review: SOL Discos present their third reissue with these two songs from Frank Eddie. Originally released on the by Eddie himself, most of the original 1000 pressed copies where abandoned back in South Miami, Florida. Influenced by soul and rock, Frank met with drummer and singer William Hopkins. They created a band together, which at the time, would also jam with people that would later become famous such as Steve Morse (Deep Purple), jazz steel-band player Othello Molineaux and Jaco Pastorius to name a few. Frank & William co-wrote the two songs on this record. They gathered the personnel and recorded it in four days. After unsuccessful meetings with major labels and partly discouraged by the music business, Frank decided to self-release the record on his Insync label. He worked on his own to sell it locally but sadly it didn't meet the audience it deserved. According to William, "The black radio stations would not play it because I did not give them cocaine or money, and the disco clubs had their own list to promote". Today, Frank Eddie is still active by playing American Rhythm & Blues and Jazz in Cuba, as well as supporting the Cuban musicians, bringing instruments to the Caribbean Nation.

Review: Chuck Edwards (real surname Edwins) is the man behind his family band The Edwards Generation. He formed it after moving his family to the San Francisco Bay area, where they all lived in a motel to start with. By the time of the mid-70s, they had started realising and even put out a full length as well as appearing on TV. Here, Cordial serves up two of their best on a tidy 7". 'Get Up, Get Up' is the funk fuelled and soul-drenched opener with nice lo-fi production and deep drums. I Can Deal With That
Review: The late great Alabama babe Edwards was last re-introduced by Adidas in 2010 via a very cool Pilooski remix. Cleverly revisited in 'original' form, the 1971 version is quite subversive for its time thanks to its distorted rhythm guitar providing a unique backbone. "I Can Deal With That" takes us forward to 77 on a slinkier, sexier soul vibe. Beautiful. Shoe companies should run labels more often...

Ain't That Good Enough
Review: Spinners frontman, Wilson Pickett and Curtis Mayfield affiliate and fantastic solo singer in his own right, John Edwards' rich range and emphatic delivery carries some serious show-stopping motifs. Here Kent Soul represent some of his rarer, non-album work. "Cold Hearted Woman" is a heart-wrenching lament where Edward really puts his heart on the line over a wet guitar-heavy groove. "Ain't That Good Enough", meanwhile, is a much more upbeat jam where the swooning strings and glistening glockenspiel are given some cool time under the arrangement spotlight.

Produced and pressed by French label Dragon Phenix, it's still reasonably easy to track down, too. For a taster, grab three of its tropical charms on this Fly By Night repress: "Funky Disco Music" is an infectious vocal-led cut that's written solely to make people get down, "Ndolo Embe Mulema" struts with much more Afro rock fusion while the harmonies of "Bowa'a Mba Ngebe" are sweeter than the finest honey you've ever tasted. Review: Leon Michel's El Michels Affair has always grabbed our attention, since the very early days of the Juno website, back in the early 00s. The New York outfit, an instrumental collective that seems to change every decade, have been experimenting with jazz and all sorts of ethereal styles from across the globe. This new single, out through the trusted Big Crown label, is perhaps one of their most memorable outings of the last 5 years. The title track, "Unathi", is a mystical voyage across time and space, with psyched-out vocals riding high above a solid trip-hop groove and a marvelous array of trippy atmospherics. On the flip, "Zaharila" is a slower, moodier piece that speaks to the heart, spewing horns and tough beats from every angle, making it instantly recognizable and, yes, as seductive as most of El Michels Affair's music. Excellent.

The sultry A-side 'Stack The Deck' is a mood-resetting embrace of chance. Review: For the uninitiated, Eleven76 is a breakdance-friendly space-funk project helmed by Mighty Mocambos member Paul Elliott. This must-check "45" is the fluid combo's third single for Mocambo Records, but the first for two years. Lead cut 'The Scarab's Quest' is seriously heavy, with Incredible Bongo Band style percussion, woozy Moog lines and 1960s spy-funk guitar licks dancing atop a low-slung bassline and weighty funk drums. Elliott's love of heavy bass guitar lines and glassy-eyed 1960s guitars is further explored on flipside 'The Hornet's Nest', an exotic library funk number that sounds like it could have featured on the soundtrack to a turn-of-the-'70s heist movie.

This open opens up with 'Alegria,' a sunny bit of easygoing soul with plenty of orchestral grandeur, big horn energy and the gently lilting vocals of the sisters up top. Review: Elizabeth Shepherd strives to push the boundaries of what is considered conventional jazz to create a sound all her own. Nostalgia 77 (aka Ben Lamdin) first burst onto the music scene with his heavy, new funk sound in 2002. Nostalgia's style can be described as a combination of soul and jazz composition with computer based production techniques. He is known for his tasty jazz reworks, which tend to include a touch of raw funk to mix things up a bit. This formula certainly works well on "Reversed"; from the extended drum breaks to the snappy horns, his version sounds very much like a freshly discovered soul 7" from a dusty old record warehouse. "Reversed (Nostalgia 77 mix)" is now available as a limited edition 7" single.

Review: Crate diggers and rare groove enthusiasts have long been fans of Elizio de Buzos' sole single, 'Tamanqueiro' - so much so, in fact, that the track has frequently been described as "the best Jorge Ben record that Jorge Ben never made". The record has long been tricky to find, hence this much-needed reissue on the Rush Hour-affiliated New Dawn label. The title track, which means 'clogmaker' in Portuguese, is an effortlessly funky fusion of jangling samba guitars, fast-fingered jazz-funk bass guitar, unfussy MPB drums and effervescent vocals from de Buzos. Over on the flip you'll find original B-side 'Sau Um Loco', an emotional, downtempo samba-soul number rich in luscious orchestration, twinkling electric piano and wide-eyed female backing vocals.

When He Speaks (2:01)
The Ring (2:02)
Review: A monstrous 45rpm jazz vocal double-sider from 1972, TRAMP records has been on a rampage with their treatment of incredible and rare jazz and funk. 'When He Speaks', featured on the compilation album 'Movements Vol.11', is a swingy groove pining about a sickly sweet romance, a soulful fairytale. Side B is a far more sombre affair, however. 'The Ring' is a guitar-led ballad on temptation, guilt and remorse, Elliott's voice reverberating from the speakers like an empty chapel.

Ola! (3:47)
Ti (2:47)
Review: Germany's Legere Recordings is the home of authentic, modern funk and jazz. For this tasty 7" outing, Welsh musician Carwyn Ellis and Rio 18 link with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales for an alarmingly exotic tune given its country of origin. This is samba drenched in sun, with all the authentic drums, soaring strings and percussive details you would expect next to some great lead flute work. That's the case on 'Ola' anyway, the more upbeat party starter, while 'Ti' is a sentimental and slow-motion ballad for weepy moments.

Since I Fell For You

Since I Fell For You (feat The Centuries) (2:00)
Hard Times (2:33)
Review: Jimmy 'Preacher' Ellis is one of those admirable soul singers whose talent alone was not enough to take him to the very top of the music industry. Despite boasting an incredible voice, he had to make do with releasing singles and a sole album on a variety of obscure labels. 'Since I Fell For You', which is here reissued by the dusty-fingered diggers at TRAMP Records, was the first of these. Released in 1963 on the tiny Cross Road label, the song sees Ellis and the Centuries sing about a lost love atop a unique - but rather good - Latin-soul backing track. Flipside 'Hard Times' dates from a little later in Ellis' career and is little less than an urgent rhythm & blues treat. Ellis's gravelly, impassioned vocal is nothing less than superb.
