Review: An iconic soundtrack to a classic blaxploitation flick, JJ Johnson and Martha Reeves & The Sweet Things turned a collective head when they simultaneously composed their core themes for Willie Dynamite, directed by obscure director Gilbert Moses. This ineluctable screen treat stars Roscoe Orman and Diana Sands in a quintessential portrayal of early '70s New York pimping, with the central character's foibles giving rise to a latent conscience when he comes into contact with a young social worker. As is often the case with the blaxploitation genre, Willie Dynamite begins with the lead character cruising down the streets of New York in some kind of fancy car, and 'tracked by the central theme: the theme of Reeves' 'Willie D' is clear as day, lyrically portraying D's hustle as 'magic', "never treating two girls the same", "it's no different from any other industry". 'Keep On Movin' On' contrasts this with a note of modesty, signaling the movie's inevitable tonal shift; nor should you miss the B-side instrumentals 'Willie Chase' and 'Parade Strut'.

Review: Dynamite Cuts is one of the most apply named labels of them all. Once again here it brings the serious funk heat on a tidy 7" from The 9th Creation. Both of these super sexy killers are taken from the mega rare Bubble Gum album and it's not hard to see why it has become such a highly sought after record. The title tune is only just over two minute long but has steamy spoken word vocals with Moog funk bass. 'Rule Of Mind' is longer at over five minutes, and the way the keys shimmy into your affections and the lead sax brings the lustre is second to none. What an EP.

In this outfit's hands the groove becomes a little more deep and languid, with funky guitars and steamy vocals sinking you into a real romantic vibe. Review: It's always a fun game to see when you first hear someone drop Roy Ayers's ubiquitous warm weather classic 'Everybody Love's The Sunshine.' This year has been rather cold in early spring but soon as this one gets dropped you cannot help but feel rays o your face even if they haven't yet appeared. It's a stone cold gem with its lazy drum tumbles and arching synths. The keys even sound like they can't be bothered to really move properly boucle of the heat and the lush vocal is the umbrella in the cocktail, if you will.

Review: After a start in the immensely popular Buffalo Springfield and a two-year stint forming Poco in 1968, he entered into a partnership with a young singer/songwriter called Kenny Loggins. Their career lasted for seven years producing multiple albums together. In 1979 Jimmy Messina released his first album which featured the well-regarded Jazz Fusion and Smooth Jazz tracks 'Do You Want To Dance & 'Love is Here'. Review: Dynamite Cuts' latest extra-special double "45" mines ones of the earliest albums from soul and funk legends Earth, Wind & Fire, a 1971 set that was notably more psychedelic in sound than many of their more celebrated later releases. Opener "C'mon Children" is fiery, weighty and driving in the style of San Francisco funk-rock heavyweights "Tower of Power", while "Bad Tune" more than lives up to its title in a "bad meaning good" way (it also includes some crazy solos, which is no bad thing). Over on disc two, "Help Somebody" is an insanely up-tempo, horn-heavy Boogaloo style romp, while "Momet of Truth" is a low-down funk number straight out of the top drawer.

Review: Funk, soul and jazz-funk reissue specialists Dynamite Cuts are particularly good at offering up seven-inch singles featuring album tracks that have never previously appeared on "45". They're at it again here, delivering a killer seven-inch featuring the much-sampled two-part track that bookends K.C & The Sunshine Band's self-titled, 1975 sophomore LP. "Let It Go (Part 1)" is a low-down Miami funk treat featuring a hot-to-trot-mix of bustling drums, heavy percussion breaks, rousing vocals, fiery (and familiar) horn riffs and impassioned lead vocals. The slightly shorter "part two" mix is an even heavier, vocal-free take that deftly showcases the quality of the band's hip-shaking, rabble-rousing instrumentation.

This is the first time ver these tunes have been on 7", and the pressing is limited to 600. "Got To Find A Way To Make Some Money" is a sentiment we can all relate to right now. The tune will certainly lift your spirits though with its rousing vocal harmonies, cheery trumpets and vibe spreading soul sounds. "The Weight" (instrumental) is more intense, somehow, with bristling rhythm sections and lo-fi organs all serving up the heat.

Review: George Semper's 1984 album Themes For Television, Sports and Aerobics is one of the most brilliantly bonkers you're ever likely to hear. It featured the veteran jazz-man reach for the most intergalactic-sounding electronic instruments he could find and lay down a series of short, library music style missives that still sound like the product of some kind of demented acid trip. The people behind Dynamite Cuts are obviously fans, because they've decided to stick a small selection of cuts from the hard-to-find album on this tidy 7" single. On the A you'll find the deep space, jazz-fired electro-lounge madness of "Pretty Lady", while the flip boasts two shorter cuts: jazzy synth-scape "Universe" and spacey ambient doodle "Extraterrestrial Search Contact Tones".

Review: Those with knowledge of rare groove should be well aware of The Voices of East Harlem's 'Wanted Dead Or Alive', a 1973 album track from the band's eponymous second album that was reissued in 1988 due to its popularity on London's rare groove scene. Here the superb, string-laden, Leroy Hutson produced classic appears on seven-inch for the first time, courtesy of Dynamite Cuts. This time round it comes backed with another killer jam from the same album: the proto-disco soul swell of 'Little People', which was famously sampled by Young Disciples on their 1991 skit 'Get Yourself Together'. Essential stuff all told.

Review: James Mason's 'Rhythm of Life' - one of the long overlooked but now celebrated musician's most popular cuts - has never appeared on a seven-inch single before, in part because its' six-minute length made it more suitable for 12" singles and LPs (it first appeared as the title track of Mason's 1977 debut album). Review: The Record Store Day releases are coming thick and fast already and Dynamite Cuts have got one of the more essential ones here. It features a pair of tracks from Steve Parks, who looks as cool as can be on the much loved cover. This is the first time the lead single has ever been put on its own 7" after first coming on his 1981 album. That is now mega-rare and a high value collector's item and surely this one will be too, soon enough. The mastering is high class, allowing the free flowing jazz funk goodness to really shine. On the reverse is a more intimate late-night romancer. What a pair of tunes.

Review: New Orleans funk outfit The Wild Magnolias were active in the mid 70s, releasing two albums and then regrouping in the 90s. Their sound is in step with their more renowned Louisiana peers, but certainly running hotter than the likes of The Meters. "Handa Wanda" is a stirring, effervescent call and response epic that shows the band at their best, rocking a wall of sound approach that keeps the pressure up the whole way through. "(Somebody Got) Soul, Soul, Soul" is a more fluid track, but it's certainly no slouch in the energy department either. This is hi-octane funk to get people shaking and sweaty.

Review: Sweet Linda Divine has a big old set of lungs on her. She proves that here with this 7" on Dynamite Cuts which comes on both ball vinyl and limited edition white wax. Both sides offer very different sounds. 'I'll Say It Again' is a raw cut with fat funk bass riffs and lively drums, expressive yelps and wails that cannot fail to bring the steaminess. On the flip, 'Same Time, Same Place' slows it right down to a more sentimental and heartbroken soul sound but still with plenty of power.

Review: Matata were formed in Kenya in 1963, laying down their grooves in Nairobi's Brilliant Club before going on to record two albums in London in the early 70s. Both Air Fiesta and Independence are perfect nuggets of Afro-funk, but alas Matata were reportedly homesick and they disbanded to return home. Their short-lived legacy lives on though, and now Dynamites Cuts have turned to their second album to present two of the hottest joints on a cool and deadly 7". 'I Feel Funky' is one of the band's biggest hits, while on the flip we're treated to 'Talkin Talkin' - you can't say funkier than that really, can you?

The unique artists write both of the tunes included on this 7" for his "When Was The Last Time" album and neither has appeared in this format before now. Both sides of this one rather take quite different paths to your affections. 'A Tear To A Smile' is high-speed and complex funk for the dance floor with loopy rhythms and Roy's mad vibes playing over the top next to some neat bass work. Flip it over and you'll find the much more deep and laid-back 'Time & Space' with its lavish cosmic keys and jazz vocals all working you into a star-gazing lather.

Review: For those who value the lineage and heritage of breaks, beats, funk, soul, hip-hop and crate digging, here's a reissue you won't want to sleep on. Don Alias, Gene Perla and Steve Grossman originally laid down their debut record as Stone Alliance in 1976, and tucked away within the hard grooving jazz funk cuts was a track called 'Sweetie Pie'. This particular jam had a sax break which you know as soon as you hear it - sampled to high heaven and immortalised in the culture, now 'Sweetie Pie' is available on this neat and tidy 7" with a beautifully roomy live version on the flip if you want to edge a little difference into the mix.

Review: While Last Poets are rightly regarded as the 'godfathers of rap', others would insist that Hustlers Convention - a 1973 solo album from member Jalal Nuriddin under the Lightnin' Rod alias - had more influence on the birth of hip-hop. In part, that's down to the funk backing he received on the album from his chosen backing bands, which included the mighty Kool & The Gang. Here, Dynamite Cuts prove the point by offering two killer cuts from the set on 7" for the very first time. A-side 'Sport' is a Blaxploitation style delight - all ear-catching horn motifs, shuffling funk breaks, weighty bass, wah-wah guitar and languid spoken word vocals - while 'Four Bitches Is What I Got' sees our hero make merry over a more stripped-back take on the same backing track.

He is said to have been a super clam and gentle soul and that is clear from the music, which is superbly laidback and welcoming.
